Cooley Re-Signed (The Numbers are in now)

Cris Cooley signed a 6-year contract extension, he said, and just talked to us about it.
It happened very quickly, Chris said, and he is very excited. A big weight off his shoulders.

I'll get all the details quickly, and from what I have heard right away, he gets about $14 million to sign and a max of around $30 million over the life of the thing. The base salary is the vet. min for the first two years of the deal, so his cap number rises on the proration and that's about it for 2007.

The Redskins were very proactive here. Good for them.

Okay, got a minute now to put something up here after interviewing Chris and Gibbs. Chris thought for a while this might be heading to a situation where he gets franchised after this season - given the low TE numbers in that regard and the fact that a gulf existed between the sides as of a few days ago.

It really came together in the past two days. Chris said he was discussing his uncertain situation with some of the positions coaches maybe 5 days ago or so and then within the past couple of days Dan Snyder made a push to get it done.

Classy move. They could have easily dropped talks during the season and then put the tag on him in March, but the team is making more of an effort to be proactive in extended younger guys coming off rookie contracts and good for them (if JC is as good as a lot of NFL people think he will be, that contract could be coming quicker than some think). A year from now it'll be Sean Taylor's turn.

This is really good news. It's nice to see the FO getting an extension done before it becomes too difficult to work out.

Posted by: JustMe | September 1, 2007 1:49 PM | Report abuse

Sweet!!!!! What cool newz.....can't wait for the barrage of comments claiming this was a horrible move..

Posted by: chris larry | September 1, 2007 1:50 PM | Report abuse

Coooooooooooooooleyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy what great news. Now I can go buy a #47 jersey without worrying about him leaving. Ordering it right now. Our FO finally got something right.

Next we learn that Brunell took a pay cut -- again -- to get Cooley signed.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 1, 2007 2:01 PM | Report abuse

This is excellent! The Skins have kept one of their essential playmakers on offense...hopefully they didn't break the bank, but this is money bags snyder we're talkin about. Now they can focus on re-signing The Reaper and JC...

Posted by: Uncle Heyron | September 1, 2007 2:01 PM | Report abuse

Okay, Jason. Everybody -- time to show the front office some LOVE.

This is the best pro-active move the franchise has made since bringing Joe back.

Thank God!! Cooley is going to blow up this year, didn't want to see another Dock situation!! So, kudos to Snyder and co!!! LET THE SEASON BEGIN!!
Go SKINS

No kidding. Getting a #47 jersey as well. We bash the 'Skins FO all the time, but they did it right here. Well done, "Mr." Snyder et al.

Hopefully he won't get hurt...

Posted by: P Diddy | September 1, 2007 2:06 PM | Report abuse

If the front office keeps making these slick moves, what are we going to have left to bash them for? They're on a roll.

The most interesting part of your update was the JC comment you snuck into the end of the piece. I'd love to hear more about that.

Agreed, SCSkinsFan: 13-D.

I think we're starting to see out what Joe does on the team--he's been coaching up Vinny to be a competent GM.

Posted by: Lisa | September 1, 2007 2:39 PM | Report abuse

OK, confused again. What does "scorn" mean? Seems like that would be the same as double-plus on a disagree.

I mean, I am glad Brunell was driving that No. 8 car when he took Gibbs to the hospital (see MWise column today).

Posted by: Anonymous | September 1, 2007 2:42 PM | Report abuse

Hmm, interesting puzzler on 'scorn.' Eventually, blog threads lead to anger and scorn. Almost doesn't matter who launches it. So perhaps the "S" category just gets hauled out once temperatures rise.

Maybe.

Er, don't ask so many questions.

Brunell is #2, its fate. At least, as when Ramsey started, he will get a chance to further rest that should and those legs. He should be at his best if he is called upon to play.

I agree peri. I think if Mark had to go in for a couple of games or in the middle of a game, we'd be okay. If it's longer than that, the season is likely over anyhow. Not many teams can survive their top QB going down for a long stretch.

Posted the following on the thread re "Having a Feeling Marcus Mason Made It" not realizing I wasn't in the ongoing live thread. is it ok to post this again here? (Today is the first time for me to post on anywhere your Blog and I am going for it anyway). If not ok then delete it.

Interesting that we talk about misspellings, (mistakes) er .. sometime things posted elsewhere can be fun. How about the Redskins NFL.com article about Cooley's new contract:

"His best season was 2005, when he caught 71 passes for 77 yards and seven touchdowns."

Talk about dinks and dunks! But what a touchdown to total yards ratio!

Dear Spell Check,
Please notice that the newspaper publishing the Jasno La Can column is in Vancouver, B.C. Sometimes our northern neighbors of British extraction will use a different spelling of a word than their American counterparts. Most notably would be colour, instead of the American English variant, color. Defence, versus the American English variant, defense, is another fine example.
I suspect that some Canadian editor may have edited Jasno's tidbit to fit in the VancouverSun.
Please use some common sense next time and ascertain the context of items you reference--especially when lamely and undeservedly belittling people who work to supply you with some measure of entertainment.

That said,
Good for Cooley-marrying a cheerleader and a sweet cost of living increase all in the same year--can a big 2007 on the field be far behind?

And most importantly--GO SKINS!!!
