Cooley, Samuels Plan Taylor Tribute

Chris Cooley and Chris Samuels both plan to wear Sean Taylor's No. 21 in the Pro Bowl on Feb. 10 in Hawaii.
Taylor, of course, was voted in as the NFC team's starting free safety.
According to the Redskins, Cooley and Samuels plan to each wear a jersey with Taylor's No. 21 and their name on the back. The jerseys they wear in the game will be auctioned at NFL Auction (nflauction.nfl.com) with the proceeds going to the Sean Taylor Memorial Trust Fund, which was set up to benefit Taylor's daughter, Jackie.

So does that me three people will be wearing ST's number at the game? Is R. Williams still going to wear #21?

While it's a nice cause I really wish they'd give it to March of Dimes or make a wish or something. I mean how much does this little girl need. Surely there are others out there that are in greater need.

A classy bunch of guys, with a classy tribute to someone who could have been one of the all time greats.

I hope to hell the owner shows as much class in keeping this bunch together with Gregg Williams, at least for a one year trial.

Can anybody confirm?

BCBarney, If you are worried about too many 21's don't worry. The white one is Cooley, The big one is Samuels and the one that looks lost like a child in coverage is Williams.

Posted by: sams3 | January 23, 2008 1:03 PM | Report abuse

1) Why has this Super Bowl coach Fassel been fired twice in a 3 year span?

2) Why was he out of the NFL since Oct 06--as you know, there have been coaching vacancies. Super Bowl coaches aren't exactly low-proile, so why weren't any other teams beating a path to his door?

He got fired for his coaching production after Snyder fell in love with his interviewing abilities the first time, in 2004. Do we want a great interviewee, or a a great coach?

Any answers?

Dan Snyder should take notes because he has none and will never win a Superbowl as long as he is owner of the Redskins.

from the previous thread:

Hey Brownwood26,m
Several of us did state from day one [right here on this blog] of Coach Joe's retirement we wanted Russ Grimm.

But if GW wants it, and won't stay as DC unless he gets it, then we are in for a real turnover.

Perhaps Danny simply wanted to bring in some new Offensive people, and leave the D to GW, and he is upset.

We just don't know...

Posted by: 4thFloor | January 23, 2008 1:08 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure people would go to these lengths for some "thug"... The more thoughtful things people do for Sean Taylor the more it tells how deeply he effected people's lives.

Classy guys. I said it yesterday, I ordered my ST #21 pro-bowl jersey and it will be the last jersey I buy.

Skinz, I understand your question, but any donation or gift or thoughtful gesture can be questioned. Are people in Sudan suffering more than people in Romania? Should we not be generous to the Romanians because there is a "greater" need in Sudan? Giving and selflessness is a personal thing, hopefully their actions can encourage others to give in their own way.

Sure players and coaches are upset folks.
But that is for selfish reasons; any kind of change means they could lose their jobs.

Yes, we understand players and coaches!
Welcome to our world of employment insecurity!

Joe,

I'll bet you a beer Dan and Vinny ignore all questions about Gibbs' recommendation, the whole continuity thing, Grilliams not getting the job, and the player/coaches reactions.

All he'll say is how great of guy they think they have in Jim and deflect the rest.

After careful consideration I am of the opinion this was GWilliams job to lose and that is exactly what he did. The man has been interviewed at least 4 times trying to iron out differences and in the end GWilliams ego probably led to Dan turning to Fassel.

Dorf,

I understand your point and it's a nice jesture. By no means am I trying to say it's not. We know for sure that Danny gave $500k right off the bat and the skins will match any other gifts given as well as any Jersey proceeds going to her.

It's not like Sean was broke either and since he wasn't married she's the sole heir. ( I presume)

Either way, it's a nice jesture, I'm just sayzin is all...

I don't think it's a mess of "Mr." Snyder's doing. The Post (through this blog) has fomented a great deal of unrest among the hamsters. This isn't "Mr." Snyder's fault. He has taken a scant 2 weeks to interview a host of qualified candidates to be the face of a $1.5B business.

There are many things we can fault "Mr." Snyder for: the horrible FedEx Field experience, the constant price gouging and nickel and dimeing, a proven track record of mediocrity, etc.

But to say that somehow all our consternation is "Mr." Snyder's fault is ludicrous. We do this to ourselves and, frankly, a lot of the comments up here are way over the top.

I had dinner last night with a 'Skins fan who does not read the blog and when I mentioned Fassel, he merely shrugged his shoulders and went on to talk about Art Monk's HOF candidacy. The bottom line: 2 weeks is hardly anything in this, and I bet they have a coach in place by the end of this week.

My take on this is Joe Gibbs [I love you Joe, but] set up this trouble w/ all his talk of continuity during the press conference.

He didn't have the right to do that actually. Coach Joe should have just bowed out and left it to Dan to hire whomever he pleases. Now, behind closed doors Coach Joe is free to tell Dan S whatever he wants....

Danny needed to get the Rooney Rule done. That was late last week. I can see the weekend, with other games on, as not the time to announce anything. I can also see how he needed time to decide on the candidates and the business structure going forward.

That time should have been over yesterday. I wrote that this whole thing is going to start smelling pretty quickly. 24 hours later, its already rotting a lot.

Cooley and Samuels show the players have class and care for each other. Kudos to them.

PDiddy, its the combination of the stuff listed above plus that removal of our Joe Gibbs/security blanket/baby bottle that is making everyone cranky. The Owner's response to the tragic loss of the best player on the team was admirable, but make no mistake about it ... it was only the hiring of Joe Gibbs that interrupted a long downward trend in The Owner's popularity among his consumer base. St. Joe was the curtain around the All Powerful Wizard of Oz ... take away the curtain and all we have are memories. Good times. Peeps are just picking up where they left off.

[Also, whether its fair or not, The Owner HAS held himself out as a "celebrity" ... so his "popularity" is fair game for the purchasing public.]

Diddy,
When I washed the slate clean, it means he has the benefit of doubt, until he proves he has messed things up.

Truthfully, the only mess is still in the minds of others (players, coaching staff and fans). If it is indeed a mess, I guess it still remains to be seen.

I stand correct; judgment withheld.

what would really be awesome is if they did the missing man formation on the first defensive play like the skins did.

PDiddy, I think its the way the players/coaches are feeling. Not the fans.

If I'm GG scouting players and wondering what my job will be, I won't be able to focus as well. The players have had their say and are probably feeling like mgmt doesn't care what they think.

Jasno writes that Williams means job security. Randle El spoke up on Williams behalf and he has a 5 year deal. Its not simply job security. Not at all. Players know security is tied to success.

My guess, if Fassel gets hired, GG winds up in Philly as the heir apparent to Andy Reid

I'm saying that St. Joe took a bullet for The Owner (no, make that thousands of bullets). St. Joe not only rented his reputation to The Owner, he went out of his way to take every and all form of blame for anything and everything that went wrong. At his last press conference, Joe Gibbs, as a dude and a swingin' soul, had every right to say whatever the heaven he wanted to say.

And as much as I respect "Mr." Snyder's business acumen, I think he is one completely average NFL owner.

On the jibba jabba about the "Players' Choice", while I don't think any of those guys would resist converting base salary to a current year bonus (i.e., "restructuring"), I definitely sense that any talk of "renegotiating" contracts (i.e., less money) would be out the window. Its just a matter of the size of the dead cap space that can be accommodated when those highly paid guys get cut.

Posted by: Big_Money20 | January 23, 2008 1:34 PM | Report abuse

I get the players and coaches thing. I think GG deserves a shot if for no other reason than the talent he (and perhaps Vinny as well) unearthed and developed on defense. If he can apply that open minded, almost egalitarian philosophy to the entire team, then maybe they have a shot at developing a constant pipeline of young, up and coming talent. Along with a big-time QB, that's what it takes to be good, and consistently good, in the NFL.

Posted by: PDiddy | January 23, 2008 1:35 PM | Report abuse

PDiddy, my understanding of the fraternity (now that Ms. Frontiere has passed, God rest her soul) of owners is that The Owner does not have the reputation of being completely average ... but rather he is in the vanguard of young turk owners focused on big and bigger revenues ... and less about the fans (i.e., among the owners who Wellington Mara, plus the guy in Cinci, and that cheapskate in Buffalo, disliked).

In the previous thread, somebody muttered something about Williams making demands that The Owner and Vinny were not OK with. Even if that was just a rumor, it seems credible to me. You are so right. Fans are reactionary, and the ones on here, are that to the 10th degree! Cursing, insulting, and saying they are giving up their tickets on speculation of the next head coach. These same fans will all shut up if the team improves next year. They will never admit they were wrong though.
If they go 5-11 then rip them, but they certainly are trying to win. Just rubber stamping Williams the next day is exactly what they did after Gibbs 1.0 and it was a total failure! Snyder seems to be handling this as well as can be expected, after the unexpected ending of Gibbs 2.0. Chill out people, and give them a chance to succeed!

1) What evidence do we have that Williams is far and away better than Fassel?

2) Is this team really that good that it does not need roster changes/upgrades?

3) Salary cap will not allow massive upheaval and dumping of players. Calm down...

4) I may be only one, but I actually have some (A bit) respect for Snyder in that Williams was the obvious choice, but he seemed to take his time. He met with Williams 4 times. Why do ya'll think it necessarily had to be Snyder that caused Williams to go south?

5) I bet Portis won't sit out this pre-season.

From: http://mvn.com/nfl-redskins/2008/01/23/waiting-for-the-other-shoe/

"If Snyder's intentions are to regain the throne and return to Redskins Fantasy Football, the most likely course of events will be the hiring of a weak and maliable head coach (Fassel) followed by staffing the remainder of the coaching positions with Cerrato cronies (Rex Ryan is tight with Vinny). With a submissive professional staff in place, the Dan & Vinny Show would take center stage, returning to the failed strategy of quick-fix, over-priced free agent hires and ill-considered draft management. Team spirit and loyalty would go out the window as everyone realizes that it's all about the buck, so contract renegotiations will be a thing of past. The salary cap limits will cause the team to hemorrhage depth in favor of the few big-bucks players, and mediocrity will reign until Dan decides to hire Mike Holmgren out of retirement and turn the team over to him."

1) The question is, what evidence do we have that Fassel is better than Williams? Please don't quote me former HC records because I'll see you a Gibbs and raise you a Belicheat.

2 and 3) This team is over the cap and requires the players to redo their contracts. People like Springs and Cooley may do so if their is goodwill (see williams) and sign FA's see Rock and Todd Collins. I'll go out on a limb and say that it's far more likely with Williams here than Fossil.

4) I don't have any real argument here other than to say that Snyder doesn't operate with alot of logic. Schott won his last 8 games and got canned.

5) Don't really think a coaching change has alot to do with this in terms of Williams or Fossil.

Posted by: Skinz | January 23, 2008 2:05 PM | Report abuse

I definitely agree with whoever said it was Williams job to lose and he lost it - thats his fault and hopefully the players understand that. I mean, Snyder interviewed him FOUR TIMES and he still could not seal the deal. If a conflict between cerrato and williams is the problem, then it's also Williams' fault for not getting along with Cerrato...

Now, my one hope is that we DON'T get Fassel. He had one superbowl appearance, but other than that, is a proven failure in the NFL. He will not take this team anywhere and he has proven that.

Given Cerratos promotion, getting a strong coach like Cowher is our teams only shot at going anywhere. We need someone that can command Snyder and Cerrato's respect, the way Joe Gibbs did. Cowher is the ONLY avaialbe guy out there who can do that.

I seriously hope that whoever said RedskinsOne was in Raleigh wasn't talking out of their rear. Right now, Cowher is the ONLY hope for our franchise.

I really hope everyone who is making wild assumptions and "educated" predictions stick around whether they are proven right or not. These past couple of weeks have really been great as far as the conversations and comments are concerned. The offseason is truly our Super Bowl.

If you want to say "I told you so" after all is said and done, stick around and bask in your self-glorification. If you're wrong, admit it and stick around to humble all the know it alls.

My barber today told me he heard from his proctologist that while digging around in a "league source's" goody bag, that he found evidence that Mr. Snyder was leaning towards giving Fudge-Ums the HC job. True story.

Posted by: Dorf | January 23, 2008 2:10 PM | Report abuse

There isn't any evidence that Williams is better than Fassell. It's just that some of us had the feeling that things were finally starting to gell with the team. Williams is a hard worker, drives the players under him, and has earned their respect. His defenses have been very good to excellent for every season save one. If Snyder goes with Fassell (who is probably a decent guy), it will mean yet another period of rebuilding, something which seems to happen with the Skins every 2/3/4 years. This owner has shown little patience for building over the long haul. And when Fassell doesn't have a Super Bowl trophy on the mantle in two years, his head will roll, and so on and so on, ad infinim. The real fear here is that Snyder may be too impatient to ever build the Skins into a great team. I'd be THRILLED to be proved wrong, whoever he appoints as HC.

Given what we know about Snyder and now Cerrato's promotion, I have to believe that Gregg asked for something that the Danny wasn't able to offer: personnel decisionmaking.

I'm not convinced that means that Gregg "blew it" as it's not an unreasonable request. I mean, if you were baking a Skins cake, would you want the Danny's fingers mixing up the dough?

That being said, I don't think there is any way to know who would be better: Gregg or Fassel. Fassel has a better record as a HC but you have to understand that any HC is going to be subject to the whims of a hands-on owner who knows less about football then about 50% of the posters on this blog. Good luck to anyone.

(And no, the Human Chin would not be the answer although he would increase the ratio of spittle:words spoken in the greater Washington area.)

Anyone peddling further "reports" on the airplane who hasn't actually seen it at an airport with their own eyes is just BSing.

Posted by: Burgundy | January 23, 2008 01:46 PM

Nonsense - there are several ways to track plane movement in and out of airports. Snyder can't buy off everyone involved, because they don't all work for him. He just blocked the easiest tracking device, but it is not the only one.

zcezcest1,
See how long the lime light lasts.

Mmmmm, pie day.

Guess that means that Danny reads the blog..Or I guess Vinny reads it for him, and leaves out the negitative points...So perhaps Vinny tells Danny that there was only 1 or 2 blog posts today sir, all in favor of us!!!!!!!

sheid,

Doesn't the dude speak Spanish? He should have said "Las pieles rojas." Maybe you didn't hear him correctly. And who was he pushing for coach? Mora?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 23, 2008 2:22 PM | Report abuse

For every negative post about Snyder, ticket prices go up one dollar. If I owned the Skins that's what I'd do..............................................................and you'd pay it!!!

Posted by: rickyroge | January 23, 2008 02:02 PM

Okay, then let's raise prices even higher.

F Snyder.

F Cerrato.

Anyone else we need to add to the list?

Posted by: tafka | January 23, 2008 02:08 PM

We can add F fair weather fans

If the skins were winning 10 + games a year Snyder could make his dog coach and everyone would love it. Everyone needs to stop acting like its a moral obligation to give Flapjacks the job. Snyder is doing whta he thinks is best.

Maybe Barno is Vinny?

Unlike most of you, I have actually basked in the limelight. Not just because of being blogger post 150,000, but because I actually was once in a room lit by lime light.

How cool is that -- or rather -- how cool am I?

Don't care about your chicharon or burrito dealer... we need some intel here!! Where's JLaC and some news? Tell Bram to get his eyes out of those dark holes and ears to the street, somebody get something.

Border Collie? No way. You gotta upsize it and go with a Rodesian Ridgeback. That's like a Border Collie crossed with a Velociraptor.

Besides, Border Collies shed a lot.

Based on the variety of contradictory information we have gotten from Jasno all during this process (as frequently documented by Barno), isn't it conceivable that Snyder ordered the shroud of secrecy lowered as soon as Gibbs resigned? There hasn't been a peep from the coaching staff in two weeks, and Jasno's reports seems to indicate he has been getting the same treatment that Pasquarelli gets from Snyder (inside sources cut off from the information flow).

Seems like we will all know what there is to know when Snyder decides it's time.

Posted by: tafka | January 23, 2008 2:32 PM | Report abuse

This just in from RB coach, Earnest Byner, "peep!"

Posted by: dcsween | January 23, 2008 2:33 PM | Report abuse

Yeah I just want to thank Barno for keeping track of every time Jasno said:

- League sources
- Rumor is
- Can't confirm but have heard

I mean really, what would we do without a fact checker on a rumor based blog.

Its not a moral obligation to give GG the job.

Its the smart thing to do because he has the players with him -- in a way that goes way way beyond the norm. And you want the players who play with passion, not players who are playing for their own $$$. Its the smart thing to do because he was successful running the defense here. It is the smart thing to do because the guys on offense respect him a lot. It is the smart thing to do because this team won 9 games, despite numerous close losses, a very high number of injuries and a horrific tragedy. They were competitive in every game but 1.

its the smart thing to do because Joe Gibbs restored respect and pride to this team. And GG does get to carry that with him. No other candidate does. And that helps you attract the right type of people to the organization.

GG is the smart choice because any other choice essentially destroys what we have, which is pretty good. We have a team that competed closely with every NFC playoff team while on the road! Which beat the NFC champs on the road.

GG is not owed anything. GG is the smart choice.

I agree with the sediment about pecan pie being the "it" of pies. All other pies pale in comparison. Add caramel and chocolate on top? All comparisons must cease.

Myself, I'm not much of a pieman (though I did meet one going to the fair), though I am into pasties.

That picture of Robin Williams on the front page of the WAPO Redskins website doesn't even bear a faint resemblance to Fassel.

Why don't they just take a picture of Fassel and post it?

Posted by: _Stumped_ | January 23, 2008 01:20 PM

The resemblance is stunning.... maybe Snyder is trying to take Gibbs advice, and nabbed the wrong (faux) Williams!

Tone in the blog is shifting. Less venom. More piety.

Posted by: dcsween | January 23, 2008 2:37 PM | Report abuse

I like pecan pie too. If you add caramel and chocolate my head might explode, although I would face down that risk like Flapjacks interviewing with the Danny.

Posted by: sheidt99 | January 23, 2008 2:39 PM | Report abuse

Can someone explain to me how "pizza" (which is just pure cheesy goodness by itself) also is an adjective to describe a kind of "pie", specifically, pizza pie? Pizza AND pie? What further deliciousness will technology deliver to us next!?!?

First, I am not predicting anything. I am just saying that the smart and "patient" (which he said he learned from Gibbs) thing to do would be to promote Williams, and keep together the core of the team - not hire from outside.

It is not about deciding whether Fossel would be a marginally better coach than Williams. It's about blowing up a team that made the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years and going backwards for 3 years to go forward. It would be worth it to get someone like Cowher; it is not worth it to choose someone with at least as much down side and risk as GGG.

I am convinced that Williams, having watched Gibbs for the last 4 years, would be a better HC than he was in Buffalo. I think the humility he showed in totally revamping his defense last off season shows the kind of growth he is capable of. I hope he gets the chance to show it here.

Speaking of pie (I can't resist key lime myself), Phil Mickelson is on ESPN News right now and he appears to have been saying no to pie of late.

Alan4,
Ah, hah! You've put your finger on it!

Danny: Coach Williams, hmmm. I like the sound of that. (presses button on phone) Danny get in here right away.

Vinny: Yes sir! (appearing instantly from just outside the office).

Danny: Get Robin Williams on the phone and forward his resume to Diakinetics., stat.

Posted by: _Stumped_ | January 23, 2008 2:42 PM | Report abuse

I don't know. I'd have to know what type of pie Flapjacks prefers first. Then I'd ask about dogs. And if "cherry" or "Chihuahuas" comes into the conversation I'd push the "Burns liquidation" button on my desk, post haste.
