Cornering The Corners

Just kind of mulling over the impact of the Carlos Rogers injury, and the more I think about it the deeper a problem it appears to be. Obviously, there is the obvious fact that there is a significant dropoff between Rogers and Macklin/Torrence, who would be forced into a larger role with him out.

The Redskins hoped to have a rotation all season of Carlos, Springs and Smoot, and were watching Springs's snaps closely and bringing along Smoot slowly with his hamstring problem. That's out the window now. Smoot's hamstring is looking like something that could be aggravated at any time, and to expect him to be 100 percent in the second half is stretching it, to excuse the pun. You have to think teams will try to test him deep a bit and see just how much that hammy barks at him.

Springs has been by far the best cover guy in the slot this season, which presents problems now. You're going to probably have to move him outside now, because putting Torrence there for 50 snaps a game would be too much to ask. Springs excels at some of the man coverage techniques they often use underneath within the Cover-2 umbrella, and Pierson Prioleau can play there some, too, but again, as much as some opponents might spread this defense, it could be a difficult match a smaller safety on some of the slot receivers in the league.

So now you're losing talent at a few spots. The spill over is probably inevitable and the depth is really going to be tested now.

The Redskins made a calculated decision that their upgraded secondary would buy more time for the front 4 to get after the QB. Taking Carlos out of the mix entirely and having Smoot on a bad hamstring is hardly ideal under any circumstances much less these. The D Line has had some excellent outings, but obviously not on Sunday. Getting pressure out of three-and-four-man rushes is more imperative now than ever.

Also, talked to some people around the league about the nature of ACL and MCL injuries for corners in particular, with all the cutting and acceleration and quick-twitch movements, it's reasonable to think that while you can return in 9 months, it's often more like 18 months when a player recovers full explosiveness.

It will be very interesting to see if the injury situations with Carlos and Smoot will have any impact on what has seemed to be the imminent post-season departure of Springs. I doubt it, because with offseason rest Fred's hammy will get back to normal, but most teams figure they need at least 3 proven NFL-ready corners, so I could see them being in the market for them again this spring.

Randoms: This, to me, might be the most telling stat of all for the Redskins: Jason Campbell has attempted 3 fewer passes in 7 games this season - with one of the NFL's worst rushing attacks, then he did in his 7 starts last season, when the Redskins had a dominant rushing game in the second half and the QB had no prior experience. Sure, the O Line is suffering a whole lot more this season and pass protection is not as stout, and you want to protect JC, but for him to not even have as many attempts as last season strikes me as startling. I'm sure the "take the handcuffs off JC" contingent would agree ... Driving my wife's Ford Escape to the service shop - again - Tuesday, when next to me is a dude in probably like a 2001 Subaru - like an Outback-type car, like a mini-minivan - sitting on custom, spinning rims. She never let us put anything on her head, but he's a little more laid back, so getting the antennae on him should require less cajoling ... Most boring clause in the English language: NBA Opening Night ... Lauren and I never get to the movies, like once a year, but anyone who has not read and seen "Into The Wild," I can not recommend it more strongly. If you have the SundanceChannel, look for the "Iconoclasts" episode with Sean Penn and the book's author, Jon Krakauer, as well. Pretty amazingly sad and poignant true story about a NoVa kid, who also happened to be a Skins fan growing up ... Hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween.

It's time we implemented an offense like the Pats or Colts. Shotgun all the time, four wide sets.

Play action out of this like the Pats did to us. Our receivers are quick enough to get open underneath and in space. The Skins have to start playing to their strength, or should I say avoid their major offensive weakness- the line.

Short quick passes will keep the opponents from getting any pressure while bringing press coverage. This will enable us to take deep shots.

Hello everyone.
What happend to regisration?

A couple of things...

Nate,
Simply put, you're the man. I read your late post from last night (BTW 10:52 post wasn't me) and when I finished reading I got the impression that you're a good person. Usually I won't come to that conclusion before meeting someone but I think its warranted in this case.
You can bet your last two quarters that I will continue to post, especially after being encouraged.
To anyone I have had a war of words with, I would like to put that in the pre-registration past. I see this as a opportunity to start fresh with each indivdual here. Two words: I'm sorry.

Its a shame that we can't get pass the idiots who choose to highjack names. I'll be honest, sometimes its kind of funny, but then again I only had my identity stolen (lol) once and the fake post wasn't harsh at all. I still don't advocate it though.

Moving On, I don't know how to feel about this Sundays game. I think both teams they feel they have a lot to prove. The skins just came off an embarassing loss and the Jets are 1-7, with a green (No pun) QB. I hope fans aren't looking past the Jets. Don't be fooled by the 1-7 record. They aren't that good, but they are playing their NFC buddies at home, and given the Redskins recent history in Joy-Z, I don't know.

I don't think the injuries are the fault of the training staff. Over the past few season, although while suffering injuries (Portis, Thomas), the Skins have been rather lucky in avoiding the injury bug. Jason La Canfora expressed in the preseason about how the Redskins were very lucky to avoid some serious injuries, that their luck was gone already. He was right. It seems that the injury bug was playing opossum and decided to sting players in the heart of the season.
Does any other coach allow his players to train individually in the offseason? I know Gibbs for the first time in his second stint allowed players to do that, could that be the reason for injuries?

Rogers going down was not good, but he has been adequate, not great. With all the CBs we've had thru here in the past few years, maybe we find a diamond in the rough? Torrence may be better than we expect and not a big drop off. Hope reigns supreme.

To the blogger last night who said Carlos Rogers was a wasted first round pick, did you consider the alternative? I think CR was very strong so would play run better and not get pushed off as much as Torence.

People who can run with wide outs are not hard to find. But that in combination with the physical abilities is not easy.

Good to have the blog back.

Anyone else remember 6 months ago when we were all praising the Skins for adding depth at corner for when the inevitable injuries kicked in?

The time for the reserves to step up has arrived. Macklin will hopefully surprise us all.

Was watching some of the game highlights at nfl.com ... all Pats, btw, not even the one Skins score. Looking at their play design. A few things stood out. First, they ran a great bubble screen. The key to that play is great blocking. Which includes an O lineman racing downfield to block a DB. Clearly an ineligible downfield. Also, they ran it off a play fake to the RB, which kept the linemen inside where they could not make a play. Another play was Moss's push off in the end zone. I know the Pats were better, but the refs did give them a lot more than i realized.

Lastly, the early running play to Maroney where he goes off the left side for about 15 was absolutely perfect in terms of play design and execution. Every Skin player was blocked, every Pat player knew exactly where to be and what to do. Both their WRs blocked well. It was a coaching clinic to watch it.

nice piece Jason - IMO losing Rogers will hurt a lot more than some people want to admit. playing corner in this league leaves one open to a lot of criticism but if Carlos' total body of work is reviewed (especially this season) he is well above average.

of course the situation w/Carlos and Smootie (and the OL) always leads back to one very important fact: THIS TEAM NEEDS A GM! does anyone else remember the season the Pats won the Super Bowl w/Troy Brown playing corner? all of their corners were injured but they still found a way to win. why? b/c they have a GM! and a great scouting dept. two things that the Skins lack.

maybe one day The Danny will figure it all out, but I'm not holding my breath.

gibbshogs,

If New England's scouting had been that great that year they would not have had to play Troy Brown at corner. You disproved your own point.

Totally with you on finding a way to win though, Smoot, Macklin, and Prioleau (at safety) have all been starters in this league. Gregg will adjust the scheme if necessary, but they will be fine.

O-line will be better each week that they play together without losing someone to injury. By the time, we hit Dallas in Week 11, they should be a completely cohesive unit. Here's hoping no more injuries.

jm220, as a former-bus-thrower, believer-come-lately, here's my thought about Rogers:

"Anyone else here NOT lamenting the loss of Carlos Rogers? I feel bad for the man on a personal level but I really see him as a #3 or #4 CB."

Posted by: Glass Half Full? | October 29, 2007 05:01 PM

I used to feel that way, but keeping up with results on the field so far this season, I think Rogers has picked up his game. I think he's fairly key in run support and good in man coverage. Admittedly, he's been burned on some big plays (other teams' highlight reels ... like the open field miss on Buress), but that's b/c he's been playing in the position of the #1 CB.

Jason:

There are way too many of you Red Sox fans around that don't live in Boston.

As for the Redskins, I hope to see them win, but they part of me that has endured 15 years of "not grabbing the bull by the horns", is expecting a loss and subsequent tumble. There is just way too many injuries, and they simply have no offensive production anymore with the O-line in tatters.

Maybe they'll win this game, but for me the season comes down to this: if they can stay in the race until Thomas gets back, and take on no other major injuries, there's a chance. Otherwise, they are toast.

Sweet! I'm in with my old screen name. I also have an original WaPo account, which prob will have to be retired now.

I also think the Redskins could be totally screwed with these injuries. I think they've lost too much on both sides of the ball, unless the backups miraculously end up being better than we all think they can be. I trust the front office to be able to identify quality starters most of the time, but not to get quality depth.

mhaslup - I see your point, too elaborate a little: I guess they thought Troy Brown was better than the 3rd best CB they had (after the injuries)?

all I know is they won the Super Bowl w/almost their entire starting secondary injured. and our team can never seem to overcome far fewer injuries.

it's just frustrating to watch the organization continue to tread water. this is Season 4 of Coach Joe's return and as last Sunday showed they are really not much better than when he first came back.

It's my feeling that the organization is rotten from the top down and nothing will change on the field until things are changed off the field. This means getting a GM, straightening out the coaching issues (too many Chefs in the kitchen) and The Danny not meddling anymore.

Well, I'm utterly confused? There are two SkinsRealist's now? Joy again.

In my perch down south, I see the J*E*T*S game as pivotal for the season. Either they take a lesson from last Sunday and come out mad and ready to beat a team that they should easily beat, or they continue their timid approach, play not to lose and watch the season swirl down the drain.

Teams catch fire, based on even 1 half of play, (see New York Football Giants, last 5 games) and this team COULD do that.

Honestly, though, I don't see it happening. The coaches seem to be getting in the way, and don't want to take risks. Looking at 7-9, 8-8 or worse.

Sorry to be a pessimist.

For the record this is the real fish.

Hooray! I had to create an email address that went along with what I'd been posting under, and since most email clients won't allow a 3 letter email address, I had to add "the" in front of my handle.

It's certainly nice to have this in place though. Hopefully we can finally say goodbye to the insane amount of nonsense and name stealing that was going on.

RedDMV,

This is A Fan.

I managed to create an account that show as SkinsRealist. I really just wanted to see if registration would stop what it was supposed to. Doesn't look like it.

I don't want to use the SR id as a poser. If you want it, say so and we will figure out a way to give you the info to use it.

Otherwise I will kill it forever.

You will be able to tell by my extremely poor grammar that this is the former SkinsRealist. To the guy posing as SkinsRealist, trust me my friend, you are about to shoulder a heavy burden with that name.

With a team as demoralized as the Jets -- who are 53 guys who do this for a living to pay the mortgage -- it is real important to strike hard and fast to keep them demoralized. Demoralize their guts out. [And maybe that way, they won't notice that we are putting Springs, bad wheel Smoot, and Macklin/Torrence up against Coles and Cotchery.] Also, Thomas Jones used to be good in Chicago (and I remember OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold being first round O-linemen pick), so does anyone know what's going on with their rushing game?

sween, I'm sure Pete Kendall can give us some sort of an idea as to how their line works. Thomas Jones isn't doing to good up there in Jersey this year but he is bound to break out in one of these games. Hopefully not ours.

It seems the Skins are right back to where they were last season in terms of the secondary. Ugh.

My boys are going as Spiderman (3) and a skeleton (1).

I'm excited for the season to start for the Wiz - I'm nervous though. Some are projecting them to win the East - seems a bit optimistic. I don't think they are going to fare much better than last year, and there have been some significant personnel upgrades in the conference.

We got a little rattled out here in NorCal last night - it was a bit freaky - timely for Halloween!

SR,
Reveal your true self to me and the others.

Based on yesterday, I'm guessing this is Mike H. It could also be "A Disgusted Fan", we both at times can be very critical of the team.

Posted by: RedDMV | October 31, 2007 2:19 PM | Report abuse

I'm wondering why they can't go back to an offensive game like they had against the Lions. The playcalling was diverse, the ball was spread all over the field, and they were even going neat stuff such as direct snapping the ball to Portis. It seems like since then, they've gone into a shell of their former selves and haven't even attempted plays such as those.

Please come back!

Posted by: -swb | October 31, 2007 2:22 PM | Report abuse

I know everyone is at a low ebb after last week's loss and all the injuries we're dealing with. Indeed, the Skins have many problems they need to correct. The most troubling thing I see though is the listless manner in which they've played the past couple of weeks on offense. I expected more spirit out of the D as well. Perhaps getting spanked will wake them up and spark a fire. I'm not going to go on too much about how bad I thought the play calling on both sides of the ball was last week, but if something isn't working you damn well better change it. I'm yearning to see something different, so maybe this will be the week. Just get out there and start hitting to start with--they were way too passive Sunday.

I hope they take a set of walkie talkies to all their future games, or if there's a problem with communications just let JC call his own plays. It's too much stress on a young QB to not get the play until there's just a few seconds left on the clock, and that seems to happen anyway when the stupid radios are working fine. Maybe if he pretended the helmet radio was broken and put something together himself it could rally the troops. The wear and tear of keeping our D on the field too much is already showing. I think Jason has the tools to be a leader, and win or lose he needs to do something to get everyone's attention. He probably knows better than Al what plays might get his guys fired up. As Jasno reported way back, JC has been a winner at every level all the way through Auburn. I believe in the kid, and I feel like this team can play a whole hell of a lot better than they've been showing. Think positive.

Posted by: daveskin | October 31, 2007 2:22 PM | Report abuse

There's something I just can't understand, and hopefully someone here can help me. Why on earth is James Thrash ever in the game at wideout? Sure, he's a stalwart on special teams, but on offense, he's essentially useless. Who's making this decision?

Posted by: lwert99 | October 31, 2007 2:27 PM | Report abuse

I have been thinking that we lack leadership on offense. Whenever I see people like Tom Brady getting pizzed over a false start or Brett Favre getting excited over completing a pass or listen to people "Mike'd up" on ESPN I always think to myself, Who would they "mike up" on our offense? Who is the verbal leader on our offense because I don't see anyone making any noise.

I must add my .02, on the new registration, for a few lines before returning to the appropriate topic at hand.

I have to agree with Nate that the dribble which overtook the Blog, shortly after the current season started, is what caused me to take an extended hiatus. Not, that my presence prior to vacating was that large, but none the less it didn't help that the atmosphere on this blog went from interesting, thought provoking, mainly fact based posts to resembling something more like I would expect to find on a Jr. High school student's MySpace/Facebook page.

And that isn't even addressing the insane attacks from Cowgirl and Pats fans the past few weeks.

Maybe registration will help to lessen the impulse for someone to simply enter a coy phrase or a page full of "Sign Chris Cooley" and return the Blog to the "true" fans who are here for a quality discussion about the team that we all love.

And, finally, for those of you calling out Nate for being a dork for meeting up with so many RI contributors, what's your problem with expanding a fan's circle of friends?

Personally speaking before I met Nate, I felt alone, on Sundays watching the Skins, in a city 3,000 miles away from Redskin Nation. Not having the ability to chat with someone who felt as impassioned about the Skins really brought me down and I actually didn't watch a lot of games for my first two years living in Portland after moving here from DC in '05.

(In fact, in my town: PDX, the local blogger at The Oregonian is launching a mini-crusade to ban all Native American sports team names from our largest paper due to the PC-ness of it all. So I really didn't feel that comfortable outing myself as a 'Skins fan at the local pub; yest I get an earful about how inappropriate it was that I cheered for a team that I became a fan of long before I learned how to read or realized that its name was offensive.)

So with all of that being said I am happy to have the restraints on RI and look forward to commenting more on here again, when the boss isn't looking of course.

Certainly the best treat that any RI regular could ask for on this Halloween.

Welcome back Kotter(s), Welcome Back!

Hail!

Hey there! Jason Reid has NOT quit. Or been fired. Or disapparated. His wife and baby son have been in LA, because of the soft housing market. He went out there when the fires started and will return to our area, with his family, this week. He'll be back at Redskins Park Friday.

Note to whoever asked: Cindy confirmed earlier that Jason Reid will be back on Friday. His family was in the fire zone in So. Cal.

Yeah...Nate's the best. That will probably need to be reposted several times over the next week so people like myself who don't get to spend too much time on the blog can just follow directions.

Also, in response to DCSween's Carlos Rogers post a few hours back...I still don't buy this CR was so valuable schtick. Maybe I'll be proven wrong but I think they played a loose zone specifically to protect him. If he even had average to above-average coverage and tackling skills I think you'd see a lot more aggressive defense out of the Skins.

I guess the results on the field will prove some of us wrong. BTW, I also really liked what I saw out of Macklin and Eubanks earlier in the year/pre-season. Now you all know why I have this handle.

The founding fathers were in such a hurry to build this boomtown that, after cutting down many many trees hereabouts to get lumber, they left the stumps where they stood. In the streets or wherever. The derogatory nickname "Stumptown" came into use to indicate what in-a-hurry hicks the town's residents were. Now it's worn like a badge of honor.

[The judges would also have accepted "Rose City," "Bridgetown" and "Rip City."]

Posted by: skippy | October 31, 2007 3:19 PM | Report abuse

I think this is a good assesment of the defensive situation. While there is more quality depth, The Redskins are a couple of injuries away from being in the same boat as last year. The D-line has been much improved over last year but the corners have held coverage longer and given the linemen more time to get to the QB.

It's weird you say that 'fish, as my posts seem to appear about 50% faster than they used to. Maybe that's just good luck. I also haven't tried to post more than once in a minute anyway though.

I like this new process with registration. I had gotten to the point with the blog that I would check a poster's name before I read the post. If I recognized the name, I would read the post. This got me past most of the drivel until the fake posters showed up.

I know we will still have trolls, but I hope we are safe from the fakes.

Soldat Anglais,

The cupola on the barn is fixed and painted. A good chore done. The lawn grass is down to once per week, but that should end soon. We have had about 4 heavy frosts in the past week with lows in the upper 20s by morning. We (my wife, that is) have only had to cut the pastures once in the last five weeks.

Thanks for asking - probably more than most wanted to know.

Sorry to hear about the injury to Carlos Rogers. Two torn ligaments? Not much chance he will be able to play in 2008. Prioleau only had the ACL tear, but Carlos has the MCL torn also, so they can't be compared. Takes a lot longer to heal both at once.

I am still fast enough to play the corner. Maybe Dan Snyder will give me a call in the off-season.

I think both CP and Betts will have big days. Anyone know off hand how the team has responded under Gibbs 2.0 after humiliating losses?

Last year we followed up our embarassing opneding weekend loss to the Vikes by falling to the 'girls, but then stomped Houston. Looking through the results from last year, I don't really see too many really embarassing losses (scoring 3 against the gints may be considered embarassing though).

Posted by: mile.high | October 31, 2007 4:43 PM | Report abuse

Jasno,

The reason why Campbell has less completions during these 7 games than he did last year, IS BECAUSE THE RUNNING GAME IS HORRIBLE this year. Last year, we were able to sustain drives, and therefore give him more opportunities to throw. This year we can't, so not as many opportunities.

Posted by: tedunni1 | October 31, 2007 4:44 PM | Report abuse

I think we all care about Double Move being put on IR but there's only so much you can say about it. It is what it is.

Posted by: bigfish | October 31, 2007 4:44 PM | Report abuse

One more comment on those screaming for Gibbs to let Jason open it up - Jason Campbell is not a good deep ball passer. Troy Aikman has pointed this out on TV (he throws a flat deep ball). In college he was great at the out's and passing across the middle, but if you asked him to put a lot of arc on the ball and get it down the field, he was not accurate. Some examples - remember early in the year when Moss was wide open on that play action fake and he missed him by 10 yards, Brandon lloyd on that deep one, two games ago. Not to say he can't do it (Cooley against the Eagles), its just that overall he is not accurate on the deep passes.

I think this coaching staff realizes this and therefore, in a effort to avoid mistakes, does not ask him to do what he can't do.

Posted by: tedunni1 | October 31, 2007 4:49 PM | Report abuse

Does this mean we will see more blitzing from GW now that he is without Rodgers?

I still don't know how Torrance leap frogged Macklin in PT? For some reason, I still believe Macklin will end up being the nickel corner. But, he won't be the one playing man, he'll be the CB playing in that cover 2 shell, where his skills can be utilized........

Wow! Some good stats for our offense.

"The Redskins' offense may be ranked 28th currently, but it it has been effective in the red zone.

The unit is ranked third with a 59.1 percent clip in the NFC in touchdown percentage inside opponents' 20-yard line. That trails only Arizona (70.6 percent) and New Orelans (65 percent) in the conference.

The offense has also been successful on first downs. The unit is ranked third in the NFC and eighth overall with an average of 5.80 yards on first down."

Jasno--

Carve out another night to see "Michael Clayton." Wear your thinking cap. Quality film making at its finest.

"Into the WIld" resonated, but I had a tough time getting past the guy's selfishness. Yeah, sure, his father was a jerk, but lots of people have fathers who are jerks. And certainly nothing wrong with "finding yourself" in the kind of journey of discovery that's the heart of much literature.

But, dude, couldn't you lob your poor sis a call? Could you care just a little beyond your own self-interests, just a smidge?

Sure, fine flick. I recommend it, but seeing a character grow to the point that he does the RIght Thing--as is the case in MC-- is a more satisfying cinematic journey for my money. But you know, no harm in seeing both movies. And adding "Gone Baby Gone" and "Rendition" to the list will help clean out anyone's brain of the accumulation of cinematic junk the brain acquires in Summer

It will be interesting to see how Torrence does. I thought he held up pretty well in the Pats game. Randy Moss had to push off on him to catch that TD pass so I don't really hold that against him. If GG thinks he's ahead of Macklin then I trust his decision. Just look at what he's done with the young guys on the D-line this year.

Loving the registration. Still lots of crap posts, but whaddaya going to do?

Rogers is going to be out for longer than 9 months. He tore two ligaments. It seems like when players do that, they get back the year after, but they aren't the same. It takes at least a year for them to trust the knee and get it as strong as it was. He wasn't that amazing to begin with (though making strides for the better). He's going to need every bit of that knee to be okay.

I still say draft as many O-linemen as possible. Then corner. Then d-line. Sheesh, we need a WR or two, too.

Let's draft a GM.

Go 'Zards! Should be an easy game tonight vs the Pacers with no O'Neill. Good to see a 'Zards team with no injuries besides Etan "The Poet" Thomas. This team could have went all the way last year without all the injuries at the end of the year.

Posted by: bigfish | October 31, 2007 7:04 PM | Report abuse

Here goes.

I was wondering if there is much difference between our passing game this year, compared to last year, so I did some research, comparing the percentage of passes ATTEMPTED per position this season against last season. I know the % don't add up to 100, but thats because of rounding off. I've included Sellars as a RB.

RB 2007 - 24.7% 2006 - 21.8%
TE 2007 - 23.2% 2006 - 23%
WR 2007 - 51.9% 2006 - 55%

So looking at that, it shows that while there are some passes being taken from the WR's and given to the RB's it's not the massive sort of difference I was looking for. So I delve a little deeper, here are the attempts/completed stats for each player this season-

Portis 23/19 - 82.6% Completion Rate
Betts 13/9 - 69.2% Completion Rate
Sellars 14/10 - 71.4% Completion Rate
Cooley 40/23 - 57.5 Completion Rate
Yoder 7/5 - 71.4% Completion Rate
Moss 44/20 - 45.4% Completion Rate
Randle-El 39/26 - 66.6% Completion Rate
Thrash 10/3 - 30% Completion Rate
Lloyd 8/2 - 25% Completion Rate
McCardell 4/4 - 100% Completion Rate

I'm surprised at the low rate from Thrash, I would've thought the lesser receivers would have higher % because when the ball gets thrown their way, it's generally because they're open. We really need to get the ball to McCardell more, and it's not like he's getting cheap catches either, he's averaging 17.2 yards per pop.

I think it shows that we're attempting to get the ball to our WR's enough, but the success % isn't high enough, especially when you consider how many of those passes are short ones.

I know a few people will say that these stats were a waste of time, but you're wrong. I'm at work, I got PAID to do it! Haha

Stumped, I was surprised to see that Moss is still our most targeted receiver. It reminds me of a point I wanted to make after the Green Bay game. A lot of people were unhappy with Weird Al for calling the reverse play on which Santana fumbled, I wasn't. I liked the call, to me it seemed like they had thought, "our main receiver and biggest playmaker is having a tough time out there, what can we do, how about we PUT the ball in his hands, and see how he goes, who knows if he breaks off a big one, maybe it will help get his confidence back". Obviously it didn't work out that way, but I think the right intent was there, but the execution wasn't.

Maybe now, we're at the stage where we need to give ARE the "No.1" role, temporarily, until Moss starts to hit some form. Release the pressure on him a bit you know.

Stumped, as for Yoder, his production could be a blessing for us, as dcsween was pointing out the other day, if we can get a backup TE who can be reliable, we'd probably see more 2 TE sets, which, given our OL woes, could provide us with a bit more safety, and versatility.

Did I just say that? Sigh. I should get a demerit point for coming up with something so crass. Posted by: PDiddy | October 31, 2007 8:26 PM | Report abuse

kost,
Yeah, I like the thought behind handing off to Moss better than the execution.

The trouble is our team isn't fast enough to pull off those slow developing plays and they read it easily.

I think you've got to mix up JC's read a little bit too and spread it around.

But in that Pats game, JC didn't have the protection he needed (and for the first time really seemed to lose his cool). The only option he had was to head to the open field.

I don't wish bad things on players, and I'm sorry he's hurt, but have we really lost anything in losing Carlos Rogers for the year? He gets smoked all the time, can't handle a double move even if the receiver was tied to him. He's often out of place in his coverage and he misses a lot of open field tackles. So who takes his place at the very least should can't be no worst than par for the course.

Posted by: clark202 | October 31, 2007 8:37 PM | Report abuse

I was just looking to see if there's somewhere which has a list of current free agents, but stumbled across this. In 2005 there were 11 players given the Franchise tag. Only 3 of them, are still with the same team. Seems like a fair curse huh!

Posted by: kost52 | October 31, 2007 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Doubt that he will miss a chance to stick it to the Danny but Coles is uncertain.

Posted by: cdubb | October 31, 2007 07:43 PM

This summer, when the Skins traded for Kendall, Coles was asked by the New York Times about the Redskins. He said "The great thing over there I would say is they're going to take care of the guys," Coles said. "That's the type organization they have. They take care of the players. It's a players-first organization. Everything's first-class. I'm sure it's a great situation for him."

So, I'm sure Coles wants to play, and he wants to beat the Redskins, but it's not about "sticking it to Danny." Sticking it to Danny is something we do on the blog. Outside here, everyone love the guy.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | October 31, 2007 9:05 PM | Report abuse

I think we'll miss him. I don't think it'll be Torrence who is expected to pick up the slack though, I reckon it'll be Macklin. Especially the way Gibbs was talking. I think the only reason Macklin has been inactive, is for Torrence's Special Teams play.

I think that since there's a question mark on Coles, we should give Smoot another week off, start with Springs and Macklin, with Torrence as the #3 guy. I don't think the Jets WR's will worry us, but we'll need Smoot 100% the following week against the Eagles.

Posted by: relishfilms | October 31, 2007 9:26 PM | Report abuse

This week we're turning JC loose! This week the cuffs are coming off Jason. Jason's ready to explode..yawn. This is getting ridiculously stupid. Every time the Redskins have the opportunity to step up their game, they take a tumble. No shame in losing to the Pats, but's there's a deep shame about sucking your thumb and crying for your mommy while the neighborhood bully is beating the snot out of you. They are a terrible offense with a good defense (very good before the Pats game). The loss of Carlos isn't the end of the world, because with our offense we aren't likely to sniff the playoffs anyhow.

Let's play our guts out, hope for the best, and quit worrying about injuries. Let's face it: the two best teams are the Pats and the Colts, and there ain't no way in God's green earth we could beat them in a Super Bowl this year. Even the best team in the NFC right now lost to the Pats by 21. So don't worry; be happy!

yeeeaah, I'm already 'signed in!'

I've never wanted to concede Belichick was a better coach than Gibbs because there's a level of integrity, honor, and character I associate with Gibbs vs. Belichick. Of course those things don't necessarily win football games, but continuity, focus, and philosophy do. I hope from Snyder down to the 'quality control' guy making copies for the coaches learned something about winning in the NFL from the Patriots last week. The Patriots do what it takes to win, and like the Redskins of Gibbs 1.0 relied on intelligent players who could do what you asked of them. I like to go back to 'Doc' Walker's comment a few years ago questioning the 'football IQ' of the current 'Skins vs. the 80's Skins; Gibbs as GM could actively seek out 'real Redskins' who combine ability with intelligence to really make his 'system' work. I still say the perfect fit would be Gibbs at GM and Russ Grimm as head coach, which would solidify the 'Gibbs way' of success long enough for the 'Skins to be as consistent as the Steelers, Colts, and Pats, which would make them perennial playoff/Super Bowl contenders.

You can hear Patriots Uber Alles playing in the background.

Oh, and if you're one of those silly people who like to root for the underdog, well, Sally has you figured out:

"This is merely weakness, a common complaint from those whimperers and whiners who don't understand what dark beauty lies in dominion and the exercise of total power."

Because, hey, as She-Ra Jenkins points out, it's really "okay to guiltlessly enjoy oppression of the weak."

JustMe, I think the #1 excitement factor about Grimm is that he would ride into town on the back of a ginormous winged unicorn, with three Super Bowl rings on its horn.

What I mean is that aside from any qualities he may have as a coach (and he seems to have been successful in progressively higher levels, before taking a demotion when he left PIT with the Whizzer for ARI), he embodies the hope most of us have that we will be more likely to recapture the success and style and magic of Gibbs 1.0 with a coach who played on that team.

It hasn't quite worked out that the success/style/magic of G1.0 has been recaptured by Gibbs himself. But hope springs eternal!

Once Grimm's name started popping up in the annual head coach hiring process a few years back, it dawned on me how AWESOME it would be to see him -- not just one of our own, but a HOG to boot! -- on our sideline as the boss man.

Anyway, this is my theory, that in addition to whatever confidence in his ability there may be, lots of Skins fans think he would be perfectly equipped to make the team a new version of what they were in those glory years...

Also, Grimm would seem to guarantee a power running offense, and a focus on the O line, the stuff many of us think of as not just Redskin football but NFC East football.

DTC in the hizzouse.

Lisa_R, catching up to your deputy dawg comment a few threads back defending Gibbs (shocker) that he is finally taking some medicine this year by not trading away all the 2008 picks and trimming a few veterans....exactly two 2007 draft picks made the team (Landry 1st round, Blades late 5th round), the rest were undrafted FA's, (get used to those).

It is simply too little too late, the team is wracked with cap problems and loads of vets that are just plain old; 37 year olds coming out of retirement, or are playing on bum wheels, shoulders, etc. (reconstructed tendons and joints take like three years off a career). Washington, Brunel, Springs, Griffen, Daniels, Fletch, Smoot, Portis, Jansen, Thomas, Mccardel, Godfrey, Caldwell, Macklin, Thrash, loads of older players/band-aid depth waiver wire stuff. Yoder? Wade? Pucillio, Fabini, Demulling, Heyer, do they start for any other healthy team in the league? Not likely. Doughty, Fox, Torrance = marginal. Preliou, above average.

You have Campbell, Betts, Reaper (better sign him) Blades, Cooley, Landry, Montgomery, McIntosh, Golsten, Evans, Wilson/Alexander, Sellars? (some decent D-line depth, credit grilliams) to build around.

You hope to get good transition years from Moss, El, Rabach, squeeze Kendall, Squeeze Samuels-maybe. Huge holes left at WR, O-line (all slots) Pass rush end, Corner, outside LB, back-up QB, RB, probably three more drafts to recover.

Gibbs the team president needs to start thinking "pay it forward". Draft all picks and stock youth, let them mature around Campbell.

PS your dismisal of Vinny and his role on the team are scary too, he is the leader of the scouts and prepares most of the information on target players for Gibbs.

Posted by: DownTownClown | October 31, 2007 11:08 PM | Report abuse

I realize it is this loyalty and appreciation for history that make Skins fans among the most respected in the league. But if my team still somehow had tentacles reaching back to the Landry era, I'd be looking for my machete. Sad as it may be, it's a different game, different athletes, different rules, different finances. You're playing against much more sophisticated defenses. NFC East football isn't coming back.

Was just having a read on PGH, and one of the guys there raises an interesting point-
"Why did Clinton put on those 20 lbs when he came here? Wasn't it so he could "gain durability"? Well, obviously it hasn't worked...it's about time he got down to the playing weight he was at in 'da U' and at Denver. These 20 lbs have made him more injury prone if anything, I don't think his frame was meant to carry 220 lbs. And if he can only carry the ball 15 times a game at 195-205 lbs...then he'll be contributing just as much as he is now, and probably at a higher level with the increase in speed he would gain. Ladell, Sellers, and Roc would be just as an effective rushing attack right now as Clinton Portis is as our primary RB. I'm not saying bench Portis...cause we pay him too much for that...but it's time for him to lose those 20 lbs and start running like he's a MAN ON FIRE"

And he's right, I didn't realise it but CP weighed in at 204lbs at the draft combine, but now clocks in at 223lbs. You'd have to agree that carry the extra weight would put pressure on your joints, and it wouldn't help if you suffered from, oh, say knee tendonitis! Would probably go help explain why he seems to lack some explosiveness.

Website Whispers - Will M might be ready
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan Leberfeld
JetsConfidential.com Oct 31, 2007

Who will start at LG? . . . Could Jets elevate speedy WR? . . .Coles hurting . . .Redskins offensive line can be exploited . . .this and more in Website Whispers -

It's probably hard to believe after their 52-7 loss to New England last week, but the Redskins actually have a pretty good pass defense, so this week will be a challenge for Kellen Clemens. But Clemens will get a break with the serious knee injury suffered by Redskins cornerback Carlos Rogers. But Rogers replacement is a pretty good cornerback in his own right - Fred Smoot. The Rogers injury will hurt the Redskins more in nickel and dime situations because it impacts the team's depth . . .
Expect the Redskins outstanding defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to blitz Clemens with regularity. Williams, who will likely be the Redskins next coach, is brilliant defensive mind, and he's going to whip up plenty of schemes to baffle and attack the young signal-caller.

Both Redskins outside linebacker, Marcus Washington and Rocky McIntosh, are terrific blitzers, and defensive end Andre Carter is a very talented pass rusher . . .

The Redskins are very hard to run on. They are strong up the middle. Washington has tackling machine London Fletcher at middle linebacker, and two big-hitting safeties LaRon Landry and Sean Taylor. Both of those cats were high number one draft picks, and both are around 215 pounds and nasty hitters . . .

The right side of the Redskins offensive line is problematic and expect the Jets to exploit it. The team is missing two very talented players due to injury. Right tackle Jon Jansen is out for the season, and right guard Randy Thomas is out with an arm injury. Replacing Jansen is former Dolphin and Texan Todd Wade, and filling in for Thomas is former Jet Jason Fabini. There have been a lot of problems on the side, and expect the Jets to go after it . . .

It's possible the Jets could make a change at left guard this week with Adrian Clarke coming off a rough game. While some people assume the replacement would be rookie Jacob Bender, that is unlikely. It would probably be either Wade Smith or Will Montgomery. While Bender has outstanding potential, to have him make his first regular season start, on any level, at guard, in Clemens first start after officially taking over the quarterback job, might be risky . . .

Laveranues Coles watched the Jets practice today in sweats. He suffered a concussion against the Bills last Sunday, and there is a good chance he's not going to play this Sunday. The NFL has strict new concussion guidelines each team has to adhere to. And also considering what bad shape Wayne Chrebet is in with post-concussion syndrome, the Jets are one organization that isn't going to take any chances with this serious malady . . .

Kellen Clemens was firing absolute rockets around the practice field on Wednesday. There is no question that Clemens has a better deep arm than Chad Pennington, so expect the Jets to take a few shots down field this week. And with that being said, there is a chance the Jets could elevate 4.3 sprinter David Clowney from the practice squad.

Great columns by both Les and Sally today.

There's something kind of liberating about getting stomped by 40+ points, don't you think?

We'll probably never get beat like that again - what's the worst that can happen now?

Kind of like Crash Davis telling the guy there was a fastball coming in Bull Durham to get Nuke Lalouche to relax a little bit.

And I'm at least proud of the Redskins for not whining about running up the score. That's the fans' job.

I hope the Colts defense opens the Pats' first drive with three straight penalties of any combination of late hit/unnecessary roughness/unsportsmanlike conduct/roughing the passer, then they rough the kicker on the extra point, just for good measure. What will the Pats accuse them of, cheating?

Funny how everybody has always been down on Rogers and now he is an important cog. (now that he is injured) What gives???

Some theories:

1. There was really only one guy who was down on Rogers, and he posted a lot under multiple names. Can't do that now.

2. Everyone was down on Rogers when they didn't have a true identity. Now that they're registered they're more responsible.

3. The fickleness of the RI. One day you're a hero, the next you're a goat, and vice versa.

4. The Joni Mitchell theory: "All and all it seems as though/We don't know what we've got 'til it's gone."

I personally, never thought that he got a fair shake from this RI group until he went down. Most people judged him by his bad plays, not his good ones.

If this were a non-registration blog, I would faceciously post something as Jimmy the Greek or Paul Hornung.

Posted by: Original_etrod | November 1, 2007 07:22 AM

original--The way to do it, now, is to say that you got a phone call last night from Paul Hornung. Or an e/m from Jimmy. And then you tell us what he said. Work with the medium -- it's just as powerful, but in different ways.

Nate, is that you or has fake Nate already beat the system? Give it some time, man. So far most of the posts are about posting itself. You're one of the most creative guys up here. I think everything will be great, and we'll all know that it's great when Lisa stops complaining about being Lisa_R. Either she'll solve it, or she'll fit into her new identity and harmony will be restored.

Ref Double Move:

I've been down on Carlos and while I admit that he's played better this year he's still not where he should be.

When someone gets hurt their loss isn't just how good they are. It's how good their replacement is. In this case it puts Macklin and Torrence on the field therefore it's a big stepdown.

'Los has proven he can play corner in this league, was he worth a top ten pick? I'm not so sure.

I'm just curious to see how the offense comes out and plays this week. If we try and do the same thing that we've unsuccessfully tried to do all year, then I'm not sure how I'm going to react to that. Moss, Betts, Cooley, ARE, lets get the ball into some play-makers hands, DOWN THE FIELD.

The Lisa_R thing does not bother me. I am wondering if some of the regulars will be turned off by the registration. Also, I saw a Crickets posting and it was not the same.

You douchebag. You saw that even with registration it's possible to spoof someone's handle. And you did it. F you.

Silly me for being so sure registration /login would prevent name spoofing. Silly WashPo for having a reg system with a giant loophole like that. And silly me for thinking that even after the loophole was discovered and announced up here, nobody would be such a douchebag that he would actually do it.

F it. And F you, dude.

I was down on Carlos last season as well. Mainly because when he got torched he would say something stupid like "they left me the island with him" or "he gave me a double-move, what am I supposed to do?" or "if I had caught a few of those balls I'd be in the pro bowl."

He was playing much better this year and I he will be missed. I don't think he'll ever be a true #1 corner but he can definately hold his own as a #2.

JM, I think somewhere, somehow, we will - maybe Buffalo or the Jests - but it's going to be a real long season for our defense. The offense is actually starting to play really well - even with Ronnie Brown out for the year.

Now you guys are in for a real roller-coaster from here on in I think! You have a lot to hope for at 4-3 but a lot to be fearful for as well!

I'd trade places ANY day of the week from an excitement perspective, but looking forward I think we (Miami) are on the right path to stability. They'll blow up the D this offseason like they did the O last year and things will be better again in 2008, but maybe not truly competitive until '09.

Herewith ends the Miami minute. We return you to your normal Redskins programming!

I was pretty down this week as I'm sure all of you were but I was watching NFL network last night and they were listing the best teams in the NFC and AFC.

Just some things to think about:

The teams that beat us area combined 20-3.

Two of those losses were away games.

The two NFC teams we lost to are 2 of the 3 best in the Conference by any measure.

The one AFC team we've lost to is perhaps the best team in the NFL and maybe the best in the last 10 years.

Dunno made me feel better.

Thanks to Cindy for showing me the way to Nate's post

Thanks to Nate for the post yesterday. I attempted not just a few times to post as "Redskin Ray" yesterday and was not permitted to do so. Thanks for the help, Nate!
Before I get back to work, [need to run to make that appointment] ...

I was "Redskin Ray" BRE [before registration era] and now that we operate in the RE [Registration era] I am "Redskin Ray1".

Yes, my name is Ray.
Yes, I've been a Redskin Fan all of my life since early childhood.
No, I not saying I am number one / great; in fact I am quite normal... just the first and authentic / genuine "Redskin Ray" to have been posting for some time.

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | November 1, 2007 11:28 AM | Report abuse

You guys had a lot to be punchdrunk about after last weekend Dik!

It's inevitable that the degree and manner of a defeat like that gives people pause, particularly with a team that's been known to toy with their fans' hearts for some time.

But I refer you guys to your pre-season hopes and most would be happy with playing meaningful games in December/January. there doesn't seem to be any way right now that won't come true, so it's all good!

The only worry that you have beyond that is how much more patience will Danny Boy need before his excitement with new toys overtakes his reverence for St Joe. That I feel, will be determined by the turnover figures, nothing else.

Redcoat,

My greastest hope for the Joe Gibbs II era is that Snyder learns how to be a good owner. If he doesn't, the future is dark for the skins nation. If he does, then we should be in the playfoff hunt more or often than not in future seasons.

Posted by: Markin21132 | November 1, 2007 11:42 AM | Report abuse

It depends how you define 'good owner' Mark.

Although it obviously has a dimension related to winning championships (conference at least), I'm sure Snyder has it rationalized around 'franchise value' more than anything else.

The other elements of his empire aren't doing so well, if the cash-cow starts sliding he'll get out fast and buy a new toy, or he'll blow it all up to try to make a quick-fix methinks. He may have reverence for JJG, but don't get between a guy like that and his cash!

Having once been member of former Soviet Leadership of Unified District of Georgia and Estonia (SLUDGE), I am familiar with worship of heroes. Experience tells me, though, that it is not always good thing to bring back icons of past and expect them to perform the way you hope. I mean, Lenin is now dead man under glass and would make lousy leader. In same way, Russ Grimm--or even Jake Jacoby, Riggo, Joey T or some other Redskins hero of bygone era--would not help remove stench now permeating coachs' room. Please to be accepting my idea that Meester Gibbs should be returning now to racing track of FASTCAR and make fortune on cars going round and round. I only learning your US of A football, but know enough that beloved Redskins not playing same game as those of Horseshoe Team and Boston Bad Sport People. Please be giving consideration to hiring new coach who has winning ring of Superbowl he got since time of Premier Yeltsin.

Geez - I was wondering why I didn't know what 'banjaxed' meant... huhuhuh.

I still think we can go 10-6 and play post season. But with the WAY we lost last weekend, the inability to address recurring problems or adjust strategy within a game, is pretty hard to come back from.

While bottom dwellers have the weekly reminder to get used to it... our fall from grace came quick. We went from top 10 power ranking to joke of the league in one afternoon.

Now we have to wonder if a talented bunch of players and a slow to react coaching group can address their deficiencies and muster up the gumption to win the games they can.

I think the issue is that, under certain less-than-predictable conditions, the comments text box is not displayed... you click "sign in to comment", and Fungible Type decides to reload the page, adding the edit box at the bottom but leaving you up at the top of the scroll area. Thus, you have to move to the end of the page yourself.
This is not very AJAXy, or Web 2.0y. Something must be done!

The Red Sox are the Yankees? What a textbook case of Yankee envy! Yankee fans don't have a culture of neuroses built aroudn the other team, something which you displayed with your statement in the first place. You could have said "The Sox are the Best" and left it like that, but you so DESPERATELY want to be the Yankees that it shades even the finest moments for the insecure of your fanbase.

If you mean they're buying World Series -- something insufferable Sox whiners bemoaned for years but now have no problems with it, then they're "like" the Yankees. But 2 in 4, or more accurately, 2 in 89, doesn't make you the Yankees. a couple years of near-misses does not make the Yankees the Red Sox, either, no matter how you wish for it. Every Yankee fan over 18 has 4 to 6 championships and one to two dynasties they've enjoyed. Had you won in 2005 and 2006, you might have some Yankee-type credentials to thrown around. But right now, you've found a couple of acrons, so be happy with that and don't think you're on even recent historical par with the Yankees. (I know it sucks for you that Yankee fans aren't as easily goaded as Dox fans have been with their mono-maniacal focus on the Yanks, but keep trying!)

Please stop. The Yankees AND the Sox are annoying, but not quite as annoying as their fans. (Of course nobody is as annoying as Angelos -- and NONE of this belongs in a SKINS blog).
