Correction

Hey there, just wanted to clear something up I screwed up before. I was thining the Skins would use an extra roster spot from Bramlet's release to add a kicker or punter ... and that is most certainly something they would consider doing.

Problem is, I forgot that since Bramlet was an NFL Europe guy that there is an exemption there and he does not count against the roster limit. So there is no open roster spot with him gone. Was chatting with some personnel guys about available kickers and punters who are still out on the street now when one of them reminded me about the exemption. Duh. So much for that theory.

Skins would love to have another specialist around but as long as they are facing thick numbers at TE/FB and WR with so many depth players banged up, it's a luxury they can't afford right now. With guys like Lloyd, Espy and Berman all nursing meddling injuries that may or may not clear up by Saturday's preseason game, the Skins need lots of numbers at those positions because they don't to have to play key starters like Santana Moss any more than the minimum the team has in mind.

So for the foreseeable future, until they get more guys healthy at least, it's the Suisham and Frosty show.

Jason,
What was the reason the starters didn't participate in 11 on 11 in the scrimmage?

Aside from injuries...

Posted by: Stumped | August 6, 2007 1:54 PM | Report abuse

The skins do not need to bring another kicker or punter.

The skins need to look at both Corey Simon and S. Rice to add to their line.

I think the skins should use their first and sencond round draft pick next year on the defensive line. They need to replace Daniels, Wynn. It would be nice to have ample young guys.

This has been the case for the past decade. But there's always another CB or Safety or LB that takes priority. Go figure.

I don't understand the Bramlet/Palmer decision. Bramlet proved he can lead a team, Europa or not. What has Palmer proved? Why not cut Palmer and free up a roster spot?

Just say no to overpriced, washed up veterans. That's a Danny move for sure.

To be a dominant team (like the Patriots), you can't waste draft picks for a quick fix.

The busts from d-linemen in the first round are innumerable. 2nd would be okay, except for the fact that there is a whole season to play before the SJK draft!

Wow! "complainers" as you stated... I can only assume it was directed at me.

I expected as much. Again my point was the blog is considered insider info "the latest news and notes" If you read what I wrote before I have no problem with cute little Haiku's and whatwill be a players nickname. But honestly to ME, that wasn't insider info.

For you over weight jersey wearers, who still live with your mom or alone I will repeat, I NEVER had a problem with reading the Haiku's, in fact they are funny for the most part, and I continue to read the blog even when there is a huge debate over how much weight Williams has lost. BUT... the NAME of the blog is misleading for the most part.

I am not complaining only stating the obvious. So the cute, comparison on complainers and fat chicks is even funny to me, but for some of you, the fat chicks, just might be a step up from what you are dealing with now.

I love the info we got about Heyer and Bramlet today, and that is what I would expect from the "Insider"

I can barely contain myself for when the next "YoYo tip blog appears or what is the best character to be in online dungeons and dragons is.

Keep it coming.

they kept the starters out of 11 on 11 to rest them, nto risk INj in a meaningless scrimmage and it was 141 on the turf afterall.

as for Palmer, he can go on the practice squad, which is where i imagine he is destined, while Bramlet could not. barring injury this is probably the last real QB roster transaction of the summer, save for when Palmer is practice squaded (how's that for a verb?).

Hail to M, you sound like you got your blood all angried up. Bloggers here are lovers, not fighters (well, OK, also herders, boofers, and, until recently, dealers, and what have you). We all jones for Skins news, but it doesn't grow on trees. JLaC is a member of this community (and is one of two people who can officially change the subject ... well, add a new thread anyway), but this is a community of Skins fans. We chat. We step away from our AM/FM potatoes for dialogue (maybe multilogue).

The only "news" from training camp is injuries. Hence, no news is good news. Football is a team sport, so for every "I want to hear about whether this guy is going to make the team," no media person is going to make that call b/c it depends on the performance of 2-3 OTHER guys to make that guy look good. Practice today doesn't start till 4:30.

My wife is a tea drinker and I don't have any yo yo tips, but we do have some PG Tips. Maybe that will help settle the nerves. Time to chill ... what else is there? Work?

Why not drop Collins to free up a roster spot, at least Bramlet won something in his career...

Posted by: dlp357 | August 6, 2007 2:34 PM | Report abuse

Dman,

Maybe it's as simple as Al Saunders. Gibbs brought Saunders in after the Seattle playoff loss to inject new life into the Coryell-Gibbs offense he had advanced while Gibbs was out.

Gibbs has to trust Saunders, including his judgment at QB. Bramlet was brought in by Gibbs before Saunders, and Saunders probably picked Palmer based on what worked in KC and STL.

We don't know Palmer yet, but that scrimmage TD looked pretty sweet. If Jason doesn't pan out, it will be good to have someone picked by Saunders to groom up in the system.

The big question -- would Saunders have drafted Campbell? Is Campbell suited to the system? This offense takes a particular type to succeed.

Trent Green, Kurt Warner, Marc Bulger. Those guys maybe have slightly different qualities than those you'd look for in a West Coast guy, for example.

I miss (and fear) Megskin and anxiously await (and fear) her return. OK, the fear is only if the Skins' defense does something bad, in which case I am anticipatorily wincing at her perceptive, incisive, detailed, and thoroughly demoralizing, and shredding critique into the team and the coaching staff, esp. Gregg Williams.

That said, things have changed since she posted that. I don't think JLaC has time (or inclination) to read the entire blog any more (except I bet he will read through the entire haiku thread). If he was on the fence about it, the blog no show at the Bethesda happy hour pushed him off. Black spot in RI blog history (time to work on enticing Cindy to come out).

The redskins said they are going to use L2 up in the box. Well that was arch's strength.

So why didn't they play him up in the box? That way the skins could have selected a d-lineman in the 1st round and still would have had a hell of a safety playing in the box and Taylor could have been playing center field as they like to call it.

Posted by: Jason | August 6, 2007 3:01 PM | Report abuse

Old School, the DE who will rush the passer will be former MLB/hybrid DE, Marcus (plus Carter, who was headed in the right direction when we left off). "Young" DE? There was one? Evans is our "specialist" and then everyone else is young, i.e., cut bait.

RockyMac at WLB till he gets hurt. That much surgery that early in a career for Rocky means Lemar has to remain as a ready standby (if not a pass rushing hybrid DE).

4th wideout ... hmmm ... that assumes that Lloyd has to remain as #3 ... OK ... then James Thrash. With Espy hurt, is there anybody else who can sub on special teams to return punts/kicks? Maybe Kyle Brown or McAddley gets a sympathy spot.

Old guys cut. Cross hairs unfortunately resting on the foreheads of some of the elderly D-line guys, esp. Big Joe.

Re: Old School's request for vets facing cuts ... add Stoutmire to that list (though 4th Floor, if he were here, would disagree with me). Jerametrius Butler, though not a long time vet here, is hurt which seems, for now, to be a death knell to making the 75 man, much less the 53 man, cuts.

Also Jason;

A story cam out after the Archibingus that quoted anon GM's that said they knew he was washed up and thaat is why their team did not go after him. He was small coming out of college, put a lot of bulk on his frame and punded guys for 5 years... apparently it took its toll.

Also he could cover the slowest TE coming off the line to save his life and we got burned down the middle REPEATEDLY. L2 has blazing speed as well as great tackling and tenacity (or at least he did at the college level), so he is in the box and ST is flying around the back not trying to make up for Archibinguses short comings and getting outta position.

Sorry my attempt at humor. Been gone to Mexico for 3 weeks and get back to find out the Bear's got Darwin Walker for a 5th, we're not interested in Simeon Rice but we want Strahan (who will never be available), my kids have made it to blog level infamy (truly SJK), and that we still have done nothing about our dline and now we have issues all over our O-line. I hope we "will survive" but it all comes down to the trenches, can we run the ball can we stop the run? I don't know, but I'm optimistic about getting to the QB with a now deep secondary that allows us to blitz. I just hope GWilL gets back to aggression and blitzing every down, cause frankly, we have to run blitz to have a chance as well. I wouldn't mind taking a high risk/high reward approach, blitz all the time and force turnovers, sure we'll get burned sometimes but I really think with a healthy Samuels (please God!), Moss, Cooley, Portis, Betts, and Campbell calling the shots our Offense can be explosive. I'd love to see us play like those Saunder's run Chiefs teams this season where we give up 30 points a game but we force enough TO's to give our offense more chances and they score 40 a game. Does anybody really think Trent Green has a better arm than JC? Yeah Green was miles ahead in experience but he through a lot of INT's they just were way downfield and didn't hurt as bad. And frankly, we don't have the personal to play conservatively on D because at no spot along the line for any game will we have an advantage, we're gonna have to take our shots on both sides of the ball and see what happens. So for me the question is, is Saunder's in charge or Gibss? If its Gibbs and the old 2 yards cloud of dust and the bubble screen 37 times a game we're going 6-10 (at best), if its Saunders and we turn it loose and take our shots I think we might go 9-7 maybe even 10-6.

Jason, to your archulleta question, I think CMoney may have mentioned it, but there is an important element to remember here. The archubingus is not good at football. This, I have found in my football watching, is an essential element to success in the sport of football.

They could play me, the governor and dcsween in the box but that would do as much good as spitting at a fire. You put JM220 in the box with a pair of latex gloves, a cape, and a belt sander...different story. He may not always be in the right place or doing the right thing...but someone's going to have a bloody lip.

As a quick FYI to all, I was in Detroit last week for their comedy festival. People shouldn't go to Detroit if they value their lives. I drove up and down 8 mile road challenging everyone to impromptu rap battles. No one accepted. That is all.

its really all about the O at the end of the day... i'm with you Jack..althought i think gibbs influence is a good thing... this offense with the right trigger man can very hard to contain. Is Campbell the right guy? Don't know yet. but I will say this .... he is much better equiped to run this offense than brunell and that in itself is a big improvement.

HEY DMAND,

Bram didn't prove anything...He proved he could play on Europe. Thats it...A very slow league with no where near the NFL Talent you face day in and out. It's pretty clear to me that since they cut him instead of Palmer...is that Palmer is playing better than Bram in Al Saunders offense..has a better grasp etc etc...Also keep in mind the Skins used a draft pick on him and frankly he is a better talented QB than Bram. I watched the Europe games and what I saw was a QB with good prtection and pretty good WRs for that league standard....DON"t Judge a book by it's cover...this system may not fit him well at all.

The lack of taste from you guys is sad, Mary J. is a mega star and Entourage is above putting on annoying people like Rihanna, J. Simipson, Duff, or Kelis. The beauty of the show is that the eye candy is simply that smoking hot girls you've never heard of and don't care about who only divert your attention momentarily from really interesting stars of hollywood. Gary Busy, James Woods, Ralph Karate Kid guy, Dennis Hopper, Hugh Hefner those types. My only complaint ever with the show was the season they had Mandy (SJK) Moore as a significant character. But Mary J? She's awesome and more talented than all those people you listed previously put together. I thought she was perfect. If you want those other people watch re-runs of newlyweds and go get the Cheaper by the Dozen DVD, me I'll stick with the amazing show that Entourage is, don't cheapen it by trying to push the teenie bopper stars on it.

Ahhh me-oh-my-oh ... Grilliams likes the Blitz. He now has two, count'em two high speed bullet trains at safety. One scares QBs, receivers and punters to death. Hmmmmm, if I am Grilliams wouldn't my double-secret closed practices plan be to annihilate the QB using the safeties when the right situations present themselves? Nuff said.

NICE to see how quickly Jack correctly uses the blogterm "SJK".

MV Dame, OK, but hurry out. The Bourne Supremacy beat out The Simpsons Movie last week (of course, THAT movie is waiting to be beaten out by our own CynCyty Boren Ultimatum) ...

I understand that they had too many arms in the camp, but it also seems that way to me about WRs. How many receivers do you think they'll keep ... and when do the bulk of those cuts happen? By the 75 cut down or the 53 cut down?

Posted by: dcsween | August 6, 2007 4:45 PM | Report abuse

Periculum,

Well said, and much more eloquently than I could. During Gibbs I, I remember all the qbs going deep, many times. I think Schroeder could only throw deep. I still see all his short passes landing at the feet of the receiver.

Skins have 11 wide receivers on the roster. ELEVEN (i.e., excluding the TEs). That means that they are almost either four deep at three positions or three deep at four positions.

Periculum,

The SJK stands for "sorry Jack's kids" because I was on hear one day and someone was cussing a lot and I mentioned my kids get on hear sometimes to read the blog and it would be nice not to have to worry about what they're reading. It took off to the point that Ja-La referenced it in his state of the blog address a little while ago and it is supposed to be a substitute phrase for cuss words.

As to your counter trey 10+, play-action bomb for 50. I've watched every game of Gibbs II and all I've seen is a lot of short run, short run, short pass, and punt. Our offense hasn't been explosive for a long time. And I think you'd have a tough time finding anybody in the league who would say Saunder's offense is all trick plays and interceptions. When run properly it's prolific. (or have you forgotten the 4,000yds per season Tent Green got every year and the dominance of Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson.) The problem last year was Brunel, the worst thing that ever happened to our season was that stupid Houston game where he set the completion record throwing 1 pass longer than 5 yards (a 12 yard hitch to Patten) that falsely made Gibbs think Brunel still had it. Even the Jacksonville game we won Brunel made a terrible pass in OT that should have been intercepted were it not for a phenomenal adjustment by Moss and then he took it to the house. When it finally became painfully clear he didn't have it anymore (something Saunder's was hinting at all season) we stuck a kid in with zero experience and learning his 6th offense in 6 years so he totally simplified things. Now we have a young QB with some actual game experience and by all accounts has made tremendous strides with knowledge of the offense, I think we'll see some really big things from him this year, some bad things too, but more good than bad I think. And I hope they turn him loose to make the mistakes he's gonna make but the huge plays too, who cares if you through a pick 40 yards downfield every now and then, that's a really good net punting average which is all we used to do anyway. We won a playoff game two years ago with like 106 yds., so don't tell me pre-Saunders our offense was any good, we made the playoffs that year b/c our defense averaged 14 points a game the last 6 games and CP put the offense on his back (coincidently, he's never been the same since).

BTW, my beef with Mary J. Blige had nothing to do with talent. There is no question that Mary J. Blige could sing circles around all the teeny boppers (except my beloved Christina Aguilera).

My point was that she was only mildly interesting on the show and that if someone is going to be mildly interesting, they might as well be hot.

As expected, running back Clinton Portis is not practicing Monday as he continues to rehab knee tendonitis.

Wide receiver Brandon Lloyd is not practicing. He sat out last Saturday's scrimmage with shin splints.

Tyeler Ecker is still not ready to practice. He remains sidelined with a groin injury suffered the first few days of training camp.

Wide receiver Mike Espy is back at practice, though. He missed time last week due to a bruised knee.

And I don't think Ari's stress level would move at all for Duff, MJB was not the story of the show but her star level was necessary to push the storyline, you kinda just don't get it do ya?

Jack

also nail on head. The saunders offense we saw under brunell is not the offense everyone saw in kc or st.louis. he had to work with what brunell had which was largly short and left , that in turn affected our ablity to run... to many in the box because we could not throw downfield, therefore when an offense can't losen a defense conventually ie throwing to all parts of the field) you roll out the trick plays reverses reverse pass, double screen, all the finese plays that should run only once in a great while... they all became pretty much part of the regular game plan under brunell.... notice most of that disapeared under campbell... end of lesson

"The SJK stands for "sorry Jack's kids" because I was on hear one day and someone was cussing a lot and I mentioned my kids get on hear"

I know you are infamous. :) LOL

"Gibbs II and all I've seen is a lot of short run, short run, short pass, and punt. Our offense hasn't been explosive for a long time."

There's a reason for that and its named Brunell. I note that when Ramsey was in the game more long passes were thrown. Lots of play action off of
runs. Brunell was originally slated as backup to
Ramsey. But Ramsey like many others preferred the laissez faire approach to football that Spurrier brought. They did not like a disciplined approach.

The same thing happened to Saunders last year. Brunell was not able to run his offense properly so he resorted to "trick plays". So I will admit that we haven't seen his offense properly deployed. NOR have we seen Gibbs offense properly employed per Gibbs I. It starts and ends at QB.
Which is why they abruptly switched to Jason Campbell. Why not keep Bramlet and dump Collins. Obviously Brunell is the better mentor? The only reason is that the guy, Bramlet, thinks he would get a better shot elsewhere. Betcha.

Gibbs knew Brunell didn't have it. BUT he knew that Campbell wasn't ready and like a good baseball GM he did not want to rush him in and lose him. There are Tim Couch and now David Carr as examples of that. Gibbs did exactly the right thing. NOW, when he knew the season was all washed
up for lots of reasons he brought in Campbell to see what he could do.

Now let's ask a hypothetical. If Ramsey were still here don't we both know he would have switched over by the 2nd or 3rd game? With shoulder surgery in the offing? They had to know his arm was sore.

Running the ball effectively is important. That's why Marty did so well in SD. He had a defense plus LT. His quarterback had sat for 2-3 years behind Brees as well. Would Rivers have been even 1/2 as effective without the threat of LT? I doubt it.

If you can do it its smart to give new QBs a year or 2 of schooling before turning the lions lose on them. And now we need more new QBs just in case. I sure hope Palmer does better than he did in college with this coaching staff.

OH AND Gibbs is playing the country hockum, aw shucks routine answering questions about his retirement schtick way too often. Joe Jackson Gibbs and Al Saunders have something up their sleeves. I can't wait to see it.

And "SJ" Jack. Remember Gibbs I? Remember that Gibbs consorted with another guy who was considered a brilliant offensive mind ... at the time. Dan Henning? He was the assistant head coach for a time there. Then Buges, then Petitbone.

Posted by: kost52 | August 6, 2007 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Periculum,

I'd agree with just about everything you say except....

In brunell's first year, it was obvious that he had some sort of injury (ended up finding out towards the end of the season or was it after?) -- ended up being a bum leg. Did Gibbs trot Ramsey right out there, because Brunell was hurt? NO. It took him WAY too long to replace Brunell that year.

When Ramsey got "hurt" in game 1 two years ago, took Gibbs less than a half to switch starting QBs. Some unique bond there with the ol' coach...

And while I admire Brunell as a person, I have to say that I have lost some of that respect for him refusing to acknowledge that he didn't have it (arm strength) though I blame the coaches for it. Collins would have done better than Brunell last year, and was an alternative to the limp armed lefty last year. So I guess I'm saying that it was just a Brunell OR JC option last year. There was another option.

Posted by: CaroCanesFan | August 6, 2007 7:34 PM | Report abuse

I've said it before and I'll say it again; Heyer will make the team. (I know. Wrong thread but everyone was done with the last one and my ego wouldn't allow me to post this there.)

He is better than Gaither. I saw them both play and practice and saw Gaither in school in SOMD. He has played through the knee problems and during the scrimmage had nary a brace on neither knee.

He was the heart, soul and talent of the Terps Oline last season. He also is a man of large carriage. In fact more of the prototypical T/G type that the skins favor.

Gaither should have stayed at MD another year because to say he's raw and lacks a work ethic is putting it mildly. Wake's puny D-line ate him up.

I'm sorry, but Jasno's usually well founded bias for the Raven's F/O will not hold up on this, I do believe.
