Countdown (the One Sans Olbermann)

It's a perfect storm of excitement -- the season kicks off tomorrow and we're at 88,222 posts, just 666 shy of reaching the Boren Penultimatum. Given that we did 673 yesterday and have 25+ hours to go, I think we'll make it.
I'm still fixated on the first offensive play we'll see from the Redskins, which we discussed yesterday. I'm saying a 40-yard pass to Cooley.
Time to blog up, peeps. Stop playing with and reading to the kiddies and mowing the lawn and playing golf and stuff!!

Maske reported last night:

R. Wynn Agrees to Deal With Saints

Defensive end Renaldo Wynn agreed to a contract with the New Orleans Saints, according to his agent, Peter Schaffer.

Wynn was released by the Washington Redskins during the preseason. He provides some depth to a Saints defense that was exploited Thursday night in a 41-10 loss at Indianapolis in the NFL's season-opening game.

Don't be silly. Everyone knows that the first play will be a run play. Start it off Gibbs style.

Only he won't get hit and breaks it for a TD on the first play ala his first play in a Skins uniform.

Posted by: Go Portis!! | September 8, 2007 11:43 AM | Report abuse

You're probably right, I bet. I'd start it off with the 40-yard heave to Cooley. But, as I explained yesterday, my career as an offensive coordinator met an untimely end when I was unable to come up with a second play.
Oh, and I have an important update. I caught a few minutes of a "Batman Begins" repeat when I came in last night and I am not the least bit bothered by Christian Bale's tiny teeth.

Posted by: Cindy | September 8, 2007 11:43 AM | Report abuse

Posted by: dealer | September 8, 2007 11:46 AM | Report abuse

First play definitely a run. Although a nice long pass would be a hell of a way to kick off the season. Then again so would a nice long Portis run for a TD.

Gotta admit, I'm a huge Superman fan, myself. He's an orphan, trying to find his place in a foreign world, fights for truth, justice, and the American way, and is a big blue Boy Scout.

My superhero roll call: Superman, Green Lantern, Batman.

Yes, I have a Green Lantern power ring.

**Nerd Alert**

I think Frank Miller's conflict between Superman and Batman in the "Dark Knight Returns" sums it up for me, Diddy.

Bruce Wayne didn't magically get his powers. He earned them through hard work and training. He is super-smart and super-agile, but it's all natural.

That's why Batman is my favorite, because he is actually human and still kicks a**

[Green Lantern??... oh boy. So you are a DC fan? No Marvel?]

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | September 8, 2007 12:02 PM | Report abuse

Loved Marvel, too. Though, as a few weeks back can attest, I am no expert on Marvel Comics metallurgy.

Loved The Fantastic Four (though it JTS for me when She Hulk showed up and they called it the Fantastic Five...WTF?) Also loved the X-Men and, of course, all the Spidey books.

It's been a long, long, long, long, long time since I read a comic book. I thought about getting back into it for nostalgia's sake, but it's no fun when you can buy any comic book, anywhere. It was a lot more fun when you were scrounging up your milk money to get an X-Men book, then running home and reading it all night over and over again.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 8, 2007 12:06 PM | Report abuse

I'm not the dark, brooding type, so never really related to that about Batman. Superman was always much more my personality. That's not to say that I didn't love Batman, too. Like I said, I read both as a kid.

After last year's CP shabingus, he's gotta get the ball on the first play this year.

But a twist: it's a flare-out to him. Gains about 7 yards.

Second and short--CP on a run, stuffed.

Third and short--JC on a hook for a first.

Next: CP on a run up the gut for 2. RI nation feels its first twinge of anxiety.

Second and 8: JC on a nice quick hit to Cooley, first down. RI relaxes.

Third first down: deep ball to Santana. TD.

Posted by: farstriker | September 8, 2007 1:03 PM | Report abuse

JC won't be able to play the whole game, Todd Collins goes in and stinks it up, but the D wins the game in the 4th quarter.

Monday morning, backup QB controversy ensues.

BTW, I met Trent Green at a fundraising event before he left the Skins. He was SO personable ... I was stunned he kept talking to me, it went on for long enough that one of his "handlers" asked him to mingle some more. I was very impressed with his people skills! Art Monk was at the same event, and he was sooooo humble. I told him how exciting he had been to watch, and that man took that compliment as if I was the first and only person to ever tell him that. It is a shame he isn't in the Hall of Fame yet.

bigfish, first, I wouldn't say "all". There are plenty of really serious women in showbiz (Julia Stiles, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Christina Aguilera, etc). But these women a) have talent and b) are dedicated to improving their skills. Portman, in particular, will be making movies well into her golden years. (I choose to overlook her participation in the Star Wars trilogy as an anomaly) They are all really young and seem to get better with each film or record they put out.

Sadly, for a lot of the others the "talent" fades with their looks (or rather the "talent" IS their looks), and they have to resort to pretty blatant attempts to stay in the spotlight. Attention is a drug just like any other...

In showbiz, there is no shortage of 19 year old hotties who can spew four lines, look cute, and get replaced within a year by another younger one.

Jason La Canfora is such a moron. How this guy is employed as a reporter, let alone at a prominent paper like the Washington Post is beyond comprehension. Just look at the misreporting in his article today:

Jason La Canfora gaffe number 1: He misquotes Joe Gibbs- "He's as tough anybody I've ever been around"

Jason La Canfora gaffe number 2: He forgets about Fred Smoot- "...the staff parted with the only defenders who had been here when Coach Joe Gibbs returned in 2004 -- Marshall, Wynn and cornerback Ade Jimoh."

Jason La Canfora gaffe number 3: He says "making calculating" when he should say either "making calculated" or simply "calculating" without "making": "...their jobs require making calculating decisions, particularly for a club trying to improve from a 5-11 season."

Jason La Canfora gaffe number 4: No consistency. He spells out some numbers and writes their numeric value in the SAME sentence- "The nine new defenders average 27 years of age and four years of experience."

AGAIN, THE WASHINGTON POST NEEDS TO FIRE THIS GUY. HE IS AN EMBARRASSMENT TO HIS PROFESSION.

Washington, DC: You clearly know nothing about editing rules and standards. On the very minor point of numbers, it is common practice to spell out numbers under 11 -- in case you do not know which numbers these are: zero, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten -- while numerically representing numbers greater than 11. Having numbers below ten and above 11 in the same sentence does not change this common editing rule.

The AP stylebook says that in general, numbers lower than 10 should be spelled out and numbers higher than 10 should be written as numerals.

So what does that mean with 10?

A. There are numerous exceptions for numbers. Consult the AP Stylebook entry on numerals for usages.

Posted by: stevie in gp | September 8, 2007 02:07 PM

WRONG WRONG WRONG. Misquotes are indeed atrributable to Jason La Canfora. He is the king of misquotes. He is also the king of blantantly trying to start controversies, like his claims this week that players on the Redskins defense are unhappy with Portis. No one else has reported this. Why? Because it's not news. It's simply JLC's latest attempt to start a controversy (he tried numerous similar tactics last season).

Jason La Canfora is an utter fraud. He should have been fired years ago, and it's amazing, simply amazing, that the Post still keeps him on payroll.

Readers of this blog, do you not realize that this blog could still exist without La Canfora? The Post fires him and hires a new beat reporter, and the blog could easily continue uninterrupted. We don't need this smug moron and his idiotic agenda.

I guarantee you he believes that his critics on this blog are jealous of him... I absolutely guarantee it. He has even hinted at this sentiment in the past. Well, I have news for this imbecile La Canfora, it has nothing to do with jealousy. Many of us have very fine, well-paid jobs and have no interest in a modest-paying job like his. We are just fed up with his completely unethical, totally irresponsible, psuedo-reporting.

here's what i think is happening with Jason's reporting or more accurately ***Skins Insider reporting.

Ever since Howie left things have started to look shallow. there's not much depth to the Insider anymore. obviously this job was suppose to be a 2+ people job. jason has (probably had to) to get stuck with beating the dead horse with topics like "look at balmer" "ohh that FO" "this organization sucks"...cuz the guy has to cover too much ground all by himself and can't really use his brain.

*insert easy opening/lob below*
because if he was actually using his brain he would see that this team is going to go 14-2!!!!!!!!! and would be calling TK to rev up the bandwagon!

I gave up on the Jason LaCantReporta tirade. In hindsight, think I was being overly harsh.

I do believe JLaC was too critical in his analysis of Stephon Heyer, who definitely would have been drafted if he had not torn his ACL in '05. Buges knew the kid was a good UFA pick up, and he is now a solid backup at LT.

And I don't think that the 'Skins paid a "steep" price for Kendall, either.

My take on the upoming presidential election:

This is another third-party year. Bloomberg (who is nowhere near as nutty as Perot, and has actually run for office and won) will jump in around February/March, possibly along with Senator Hagel (who just declared he won't seek re-election). I think that's a great thing for the country as Bloomberg is a very impressive man, and Hagel is a very impressive legislator.

I'm an independent, but I won't vote that ticket if Senator Obama wins the Democratic nomination.

That leaves it open for the Democratic candidate (whoever he/she is) to win the General Election. It's the same recipe that got President Clinton elected, and I think it'll happen again.

I also don't think Hollywood had anything to do with Vice President Gore or Senator Kerry losing. I think both those guys lost completely on their own by listening to their handlers and trying to play "politics by the polls". They were too conservative, and they never once let their personalities shine through.

One gets the feeling looking at Obama that he is his own man. His campaign is defined by his ideals. One looks at Senator Clinton (who I respect a great deal) and sees someone who is defined by her poll numbers. Just my two cents on that.

Did I just cross over into Chris Cillizza's blog or something? :-)

This new HBO series "Tell Me You Love Me" looks interesting.

But I have to say, a character who is a shrink is a very, very tired cliche in Hollywood these days. More often than not, it's a crutch for lazy writers. It worked in "The Sopranos" (largely because Melfi was written and acted very well in her own right), not sure I can think of another place where it worked...

Level-headed parents will help you. I'll admit that some of the parents turned on me when I started in on a referee for a bad call. They were right. The referee was about 13 years old, and I learned my lesson.

Diddy, diddy, I shake my head ruefully yet again. Of course BOTH Obama and Clinton must look at the poll numbers. More than any other candidate they live or die by them. Its all about money and campaign expenses. No one is going to support a candidate with big donations if they don't think they have a chance. Both Clinton and Obama labor under enormous adversity in the form of currently accepted facts: neither an African American nor a woman could ever win a presidential election. The only way to prove to potential financial supporters that this may not be true is through the polls.

SO ... both candidates will be playing the polls heavily.

dealer: Dude, can't you see her almost drooling whenever she talks about them? And man she gets so defensive. 'Xcuse me.
grrrrrrglllllllllle bubbbbbbbbblllleeeee deep breath, exhale ..

Of course, I do know that both candidates play the polls. You'd have to be nuts to not do so. But it just seems to me that Obama lets his ideas fuel his message.

That said, my sister (who is a pretty serious politico) had a choice between the Obama and Clinton campaigns and after meeting them both, chose Clinton in a heartbeat.

So, basically, I don't know anything except what television tells me I should know.

As for who I'd vote for...I would be very intrigued by a self-funded, independent Bloomberg candidacy. I hope he doesn't implode and turn out to be a giant pinhead like Perot.

It can only mean that one of my teams will win something. Arsenal?

The first play will be a wide receiver screen to Santana Moss for two yards.

Next...I like Obama because he's fresh and has a grass roots background. I am concerned with his lack of experience though. I think Hillary is stiff, rehearsed and does not connect with me. If Bill could run again, I'd vote for him without pause. So what he got a little on the side. It's better than waging a full scale war.

speaking of little league, my 5 year old son starts his first day of soccer practice this week. I have to admit that I'm kind of nervous about it. cin city, gotta say that growing up reading TK, Boz and wilbon I've been feling a mix of jealousy and pride resulting from having to share them w/ the rest of the country. . .

on the one hand it's great to see TK and Wilbon get the recognition they deserve, but on the other, I really miss their focus on the local stuff, especially being 2k miles away. . .

I know things must change, and I gotta say that the new guy Wise (OK, not so new) is bringing it. . .

he really hit a chord with the "sunday" column. . .

Maybe it's time that us fans (well maybe me anyway) stop focusing on the recognition we finally received b/c of the team's success in the 80s/90s and get back to that attitude of having a chip on our shoulder that can only be removed by something like riggo going all the way on 4th and 1. . .

I am sick of the missed expectations and just want us to surprise the hell out of the rest of the country like we did back then when we were continuosly not expected to make it far and always surprised folks when we won it all (maybe w/ the exception the bandwagon team). . .

I am more than ready to get this thing kicked off! ! !

Miami's secondary is kinda lame, right? Based on what success of the long pass on the first play in the preseason ... and how the expectation for what the Skins need to do this game (rush btwn the tackles) ... my guess would be that Saunders sends out the three WRs, with Portis shallow after a chip block, and let Jason Campbell start the show. That might be the only pass that works the whole game. [Result is either a first down (or TD) or incomplete pass ... the latter of which would be followed by pass, pass, punt. See last season and first halfs in the preseason.]

chRIS Larry: I'm in a sportsline pool like that. How many people in your's so far? Also, might not want to mention the cash part of it on-line ... interstate gambling, esp. over the googles, is a no no with the feds. At least, I THINK that's why all the online casino webservers are in the Caribbean and Central America.

Dorf: If you're checking in and haven't unloaded your huge windfall yet, I came up with another idea: buy the Skins from Dan Snyder. Note: You might need some help from friends ... I'm deep into the lottery to do my part.

"This one goes to 17" - Nigel Tufnel, NFL prognosticator.

This game is by no means assured. This one will have the East Coast version of Unstoppable Force v. Immovable Object (i.e., Clinton Portis v. Jason Taylor ... West Coast version is LT v. Urlacher). Just trying to be objective about this ... it SHOULD be a low scoring game. Special teams play, esp. relative field position at the change of possession, is going to be key. Both of these teams' Ds are TOUGH in the red zone. Sweez'um could end up being our new lover boy ... or, gulp, John Hall might be back next week (loverboy, loverboy, loverboy!).

dealio, you remember that Tom Petty song you're wife remembered last night? I think that's what's happening to Michigan (and why we've heard nothing from cload today ... we need to be supportive when he returns ...). As a Michigan State alum, that other team's play is the stuff of wet dreams, but I do take off my hat and bow my head at funerals.

If I bought the Redskins.... hmmm. I would move them to DC. (Landover Redskins?) I would also fire the Funky 4 or whatever the SJK their name is and instead have a Tom Cruise look alike (if Tom isn't available) chased down by police dogs once a game. I would also have Dale Earnhardt Jr. do do-nuts midfield at half time. Dorf Stadium would basically be a three ring circus with a winning football team. Phillip Daniels would invite me in to his den and we would look at his old football albums together and then I'd cut him for a 22 year old JUCO stud. Oh and there would also be a science lab in the bowels of Dorf Stadium curing diseases and maladies that plague our great earth. I may also hold Native American conventions on an annual basis and change the name to the Washington Dorfs. We would have a Mascot by committee and multiple zany characters would carry the load. The Washington Dorfs would remian burgundy and gold, but Clinton Portis would be in charge of what socks Jersey combos the teams would wear each game. (after Clinton Portis is cut in 2 years and replaced by a 19 year old cyborg, he would remain as our fashion coordinator.) The helmets would no longer possess our feather ladened indigenous friend, but a more PC picture of me. I would be worshiped by all. Now, who here wants to pool their resources together to help get the shabingus underway?

The Dorf Abides.

I think the first Skin to score this season will be Sweez'um.

Also, pondering the absurdity of periculum's "its only the first game, and its outside of the division and conference, so its not important" stuff. This game is a MUST win ... psychologically, not only for this team, but for the other three teams in the division, two of whom the Skins face over the next two weeks. I try and I try and ... (acronym = ITAITA ...), but sometimes its just bothers me that I have to pick my brains off the monitor when my head explodes. PRIEST HOLMES! Bangkok PIZZA HUT! SERENITY NOW! Yes, and I would also purchase Papa Johns with our said pooled resources... the name would be changed to Papa Dorfs and for every Redskins offensive touchdown a free slice of Papa Dorfs pizza would be given out to the fans at Dorf Stadium. All those outside of Dorfs stadium could purchase a whole pizza for $1.00.

Somehow this reminds me of when Homer became the city's garbage and he spent Springfield's entire year's budget in a month on singing garbage men that do everything for you. Yes... this is very similar... because at the end they moved Springfield 5 miles down the road.

cL, when someone said Betts would score first ("He drew first blood, not me." - John Rambo), my initial thought was goal line Sellers. My second thought was that Saunders never gives Sellers the ball in the Red Zone ... and that St. Joe would overrule Saunders' 5 receiver set ... and go for the field goal.

[Though the success I remember from recent years in the red zone was from the other tight end, Royal, then Yoder, ... so maybe Joe lets Al go for it ... but then I say Yoder first ... but still not a RB.]

Zebra, that was an old roll call from one of the earlier death marches, to 50k maybe it was. I only posted it last night for nostalgia's sake because I intended to create a new roll call and post it afterwards. But I forgot.

Anyway, so it was an OLD roll call and I dropped the ball. Dude, you would definitely be on roll call if I had the concentration skillz to put one together.

Our D is so amped I'm inclined to guess it will be a fumble from a vicious hit, but a kick return fumble deep in Dolphin territory -- maybe on a punt return just after they stop us on a critical third down -- would rule too.

It's pretty nice, roomy and well-appointed, and the staff seem very nice, and smoke-free, and has WiFi. As long as we can get a good table with a decent sized screen and sound (which obviously is critical) we will be good to go.

Stumptown Chris suggested a place in my neighborhood which has an established cadre of Skins fans, but unfortunately it's one of Portland's thousands of smokepits, and that's a non-starter for me. As an ex-smoker I am the worst kind of anti-smoking zealot. Cigarette smoking, I mean.

Posted by: swb | September 8, 2007 10:56 PM | Report abuse

With apologies to Bill, from Henry 5, Act 3:

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the line up with our Redskin dead.

In life there's nothing so becomes a man
As never to get busted or talk trash:
But when the whistle of play blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the baller;

Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;

Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let fly through the pounding of the ball
Like the brass cannon; let your growls o'erwhelm them
As fearfully as doth a furious SeanTay
Prance and dance o'er his confounded man,
Smash'd with a wild and nasty check.

Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend burgundy and gold
To his full height. On, on, you noblest Redskins!

Whose blood is trained from Hall of Famers' Line!
Ballers that, like Jurgenson and Riggo,
Have in these parts through grueling two-a-days fought
And doffed their pads for lack of full contact:

Dishonour not your bloggers; now attest
That those whom you call'd Coaches call'd you out.

Be copy now to men of Dolphin blood,
And teach them how to play. And you, good linemen,
Whose limbs swelled in the weight room, show us here
The mettle of your muscle; let us swear
That you are worth your draft picks; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not bloody gaming in your eyes.

I see you stand like champions at the line,
Listening for the count. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'Playoff berth for Redskins, and your fans!'

Gonzalez has bought into his own hype and lifestory of up by your own bootstraps - if he can do it anyone can.

Like the popular kids clique in high school, he found himself in this group all of sudden and so did whatever he had to in order to stay there.

His comment about "My worst day at the Justice Dept was better than my dad's best days." was just weird and distasteful.

I don't think you need to be the spokesperson for your ethnicity but it is interesting that the Latino community has never really embraced him nor he them.

Shakespeare dude, well done. I would hope that Dorf would have the good sense to play this entire speech (the Branagh version will do fine) during commercial breaks at the stadium.

Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Until one day it came to pass
That a young man came forth,
Jason hight,
Beloved of Joseph,
With stern eyes and warrior's mien.

That the sacrifice which Joseph had made
When Jason appeared, marked by signs of wonder, was rash and ill-chosen.

Jason stayed in the temple with Joseph, and watched his brethren go to war,

My college years were hard. I got maybe one game a year and then I had to watch 91 SB with a bunch of non fans who justed wanted to watch the SB in a dorm TV room.
I vowed never again which has been true but until Sunday Ticket I had many a year without them.
*sigh*

His grim warriors growing stronger as they conquered,

Looking at Wilson and this team all I can say is character. Now Gibbs has the character players he always pursues. Up and down from sub to starter. (With the exception of one Brandon Lloyd of course.)

This is his kind of team. His kind of players. Ain't no excuses now Joe.

Guivre of the Fleece

Cross white cap and trough long had the Guivre been searching;
Burnished red dorsal fin near pristine beaches, lurking. Wallowing in an abyss with scent of darkness and fear reeking; Delirium coming, a glistening gossamer gown behind moon beams peaking.

Seeking her enchantments, from surging tide upon golden fleece is he laid; A tortured soul by lascivious dreams now enslaved! Burning embrace of flame, fulcrum of passion 'neath translucent gown; Surging dorsal parting Her foaming drape of ancient renown.

Twisting and sliding, crashing through wave after wave; Steered by lust's mischievous lingua, Ecstasy's road to pave. Quivering labium, for which many playful songs are sung; Muse's words for which no language has tongue.

Piloting every enchanted ripple flickering ever faster; Wondrous maze, many long luscious passages to master. Have I now forgotten my own name? Daemon am I, driven forward through foggy myst and cleansing rain.

Taunting serpent tasting nectar its thirst never quenching; 'Midst swelling waves, flicking 'tween every crevice sacred elixir drenching. Burnished red dorsal, swollen, as serpent's tail revels in revealing; Heart of the Fleece, fabulous golden curls, heady vintage was it concealing.

Basking in flame, undulating waves climbing ever higher; Goddess healing font rages, overwhelmed by Passion's irresistible lyre. Droplets of ambrosia greedily savored by Her devoted Knight; Seer's visions come unbidden revealed by sacred star light.

Desire still rules in a place outside time and takes for itself a new form; Swelling tempest, trembling thunder in a roiling storm. Passion's fulcrum, white heat rising, intertwined souls by love's incineration loosed; Desperate now is the Fleece, by anticipated penetration is she infused.

Comes tortured sunset colored dorsal to her surprised delight; Finds her most sacred altar deep within her temple of Erotic Night. Frolicking, surging to and fro, frenzied dancing, he leaps inebriated by nectar. Urging ever more exuberance, Goddess still protecting Troy as once did Hector.

But not long can she hold 'gainst the clever horse in her temple, Playfully dancing 'cross every bastion of ecstasy's dunjon making her tremble! Long sword thrusts overwhelm the Keep's resistance and its Liege. Quivering arrows, wounded moans riven by Cupid's bow, mark end of the siege.

Sweet bliss then comes impaling this knight's seduction; Her radiant translucent fingers gently seeking burnished dorsal's eruption. Yet still awake lies Her Guivre, never quenched by goddess elixir; In the throes of Ecstasy dreaming of dancing a twixt her.

Nate, I'm mucho impressed that you quoted the Crispin's Day speech. I played Henry on stage (my second ever play, community theatre, not very interesting), and loved every minute of it.

The single most relevant passage to my life from Shakespeare:

"Now, beshrew
my father's ambition! he was thinking of civil wars
when he got me: therefore was I created with a
stubborn outside, with an aspect of iron, that, when
I come to woo ladies, I fright them. But, in faith,
Kate, the elder I wax, the better I shall appear:
my comfort is, that old age, that ill layer up of
beauty, can do no more, spoil upon my face: thou
hast me, if thou hast me, at the worst; and thou
shalt wear me, if thou wear me, better and better:
and therefore tell me, most fair Katharine, will you
have me? "

Brilliant.

Alright, folks. With that, I am out. See you tomorrow at 10am/1pm.

I'm beyond excited for the season to begin.

Drink, drink, drunk, drunk

Cause when I'm drunk I'm as happy as can be!
Cause I am am the 88,888 poster for the RI family!
Well the RI family is the best family.

And, I gotta say, in a slovelny, drunken state of mind, mind you...

I love this little community, this little band of brothers (and sisters). For all those sitting on the sidelines because of our "cliqueish" behavior, jump in and have some fun. Nobody bites.

Carry on...and on to 19-0!

Lest they forget:
Thanks to Robert Viering
(from deep in the heart of Texas of all places!)

Dallas vs. Washington
January 22, 1983

It's time once again for that game of the year
the one every Cowboy fan really does fear.
To battle the Redskins on RFK grass
the Cowboys just know they'll get knocked on their ass.
Now that's straight to the point, and it's sad but it's true,
there just ain't no hope for those bad boys in blue.

The Cowboys are lucky to have gotten this far,
their offense is weak and their defense sub-par.
With a six and three record they should be watching at home,
but thanks to the strike, their fate's been postponed.
On Saturday they'll have to go face the music
and playing the Redskins their just bound to lose it.

The Skins will outclass this "America's Team"
and shake them awake from their season long dream.
And we're not just talking about beating the spread,
we're talking about literally beating them dead!
So let's just examine this weekend's key match-up
and hope that your Cowboys still know how to play catch-up.

On offense the Cowboys have White and Dorsett.
If you're betting on them, you'd better not bet.
Tony D's got fast feet, and White, he can throw,
but the Redskins got defense and they'll steal the show.
Guys like Manley and Coleman and Peters and Murphy,
they'll pound on those Cowboys and won't have no mercy.

They'll start with receivers like Pearson and Johnson,
and California Quake 'em til they need Johnson & Johnson.
If that's not enough then the runners will pay,
and it's likely that fumbles will cost them this day.
And Danny White too, he'll be under the gun
and when Butz fills the middle there's nowhere to run.

Now I've touted the defense and their great it's true,
but compared to the offense they might as well wear blue.
I could go on all day about Theismann and Riggins
but we all know they're gonna cut Cowboys to ribbons.
So no sense in wasting my ink and my time
on stuff that you know (and don't even rhyme).

Now there's one thing I do feel I just must admit,
that Tom Landry's a genius and won't flinch a bit.
They say he's the greatest head coach since George Halas,
but when Washington's through he'll wish he never left Dallas.

Now, I'll admit I'm dmned knackered after a rockin' night in Old Town(e) and that makes reading back-posts challenging, but who got the ultimate "Penultimate" post? Seeing the contributions of the well-known names tonight will mean a sound sleep. That and the fact that it's 1:40 and I'm an old man these days. 11 hours and 30-something minutes to go . . .

So much to say, but the most important is this: dudes, the owner of this team is "Danny Syder." How could we not SUCK???!!! Honestly, to my soul, I loved the team in the 80's: Art Monk, Gary Clark, Sanders, Grimm, so many, and now this owner has been trying to buy players on lost time/future money. You may hate me for saying this, but I don't give a shizz about this team. The real fun NFL days are done. If you disagree, then think about how hard it would be to buy this Redskins team: only a nebbish could do it, not a Squire. 'Nuff said.

Hey Periculum,

Congratulations for being poster #88,888. We can't wait to hear about the craptastic prize you have won. (Maybe you will get to have lunch with Priest Holmes.)

However, that recitation of sexually-charged imagery and innuendo should have been heavily laced with SJKs. We aren't prudes, but we think you went a bit too far for a "family" blog.

Even Clark Judge occasionally finds something nice to say regarding the Redskins.

"Defensive Rookie of the Year

LaRon Landry, S, Washington. All I know is that a scout I trust told me the league's best two safeties play for the Redskins. This guy doesn't miss tackles, hits hard and makes Sean Taylor that much more effective."

Back from Chiang Rai and no need for my help to reach this blog goal.

Nonetheless here is something from ESPN to get your game face on.

"Look for Ronnie Brown to slice through a rush defense that allowed 137.3 yards per game in 2006. Trent Green will be efficient, but not outstanding. An aggressive Miami front seven will stuff the ground game early, and Jason Campbell doesn't have enough weaponry to compensate."

Despite ESPN's insinuation, 57.7% pick the 'skins to win.

The race to 88,888 last night fittingly turned into mythic quest/epic/Shakespeare last night.

My own contribution is entitled the First Book of Jason. It was a sudden inspiration at the keyboard last night.

There were a couple of queries last night about what it's about. Ain't it obvious?

To make it easier to read, here's a single repost (cload, I think long single posts are okay past-penultimatum, right?). I've made one or two edits.

===================

The Book of Jason

These are the chronicles of the people of the east,
Who dwelt in the marble city astride the Patawomeke,
glorious in its ancient temples honoring the sun,
from the seat of father Abraham in the west,
To the field of Robert in the east.

Of the people's sufferings,
Their long journey in the wilderness,
And their deliverance
I sing.

It came to pass that at the time of Joseph's return,
As some had prophesied,
The hearts of the people were glad,
And they roared their voices in triumph.

But their sufferings remained,
And the people were full of mockers and despisers,
Saying that Joseph was no more
The beloved and anointed one, the chosen one.
But now cast aside, they said: tormented by a devil, a plaything of the gods.

So the people grieved, and turned aside,
Riven in doubts, and confused by a babble of voices.

Until one day it came to pass
That a young man came forth,
Jason hight,
Beloved of Joseph,
With stern eyes and warrior's mien.
The people wondered, and some said
That the sacrifice which Joseph had made
When Jason appeared, marked by signs of wonder, was rash and ill-chosen.

Jason stayed in the temple with Joseph, and watched his brethren go to war,
But he stayed apart from the battle.
And the people murmured,
"Who is Jason, that Joseph should love him so?
And where is our deliverance, when he only gazes at the battle, and fights not?"

Joseph and his elders heard the people, and grieved,
And bit their lips,
Praying that their search had not been in vain.

Till one day,
Joseph called Jason to him,
And before all the people,
Laid his hand upon his shoulder, and said that the time had come
For Jason to lead the people.

So Jason, fearless and golden in the sun,
Strode out onto plains outside the city, place of much contention,
Nor did he address the people, the mockers and faithful alike,
But buckling his helm he gathered a troop of doughty warriors
And went forth to combat.

Together they rode throughout the eastern lands,
slaying the giants,
Driving away the carrion birds,
And smiting the horsemen
Who had sown confusion and suffering
Throughout the land.

And as Jason won battle after battle,
His grim warriors growing stronger as they conquered,
The hearts of the people were filled with joy.
And so the people of the marble city flocked to Jason,
Casting aside their doubts, and those who doubted.

And lo, the people saw that Joseph had chosen wisely,
The young man preserving the wisdom and commandments of the old.
Now the people saw signs of Jason's wisdom,
And his stern mien of command,
And they laughed to see so young and strong a king.

And the hearts of the elders were glad,
And they laughed as if
They too once again were young.

And when at last Jason climbed the mountain of fame,
And led his people to the summit,
Taking old Joseph by the hand to the top,
The people rejoiced,
And smote the air with songs of praise,
And gloried in their triumph.

This I sing.

My own favorite stanza is about Jason fighting the giants, carrion birds, and horesemen.

How can you be so angry on opening day? This has to be the most perfect day of the year, a day of joy and happiness. It is to football fans what Easter is to Christians -- the resurrection.

And what a day. Not only the 'Skins but Chargers and Bears then Giants and Cowboys. You're sick -- or a Saints fan -- if you can post hate before the first kickoff.
