Cut Day

Hard to imagine anything too shocking coming out of the Skins cuts, and unless they actually do put Malcolm Kelly on IR then I suspect it will be a pretty mundane afternoon.

The punter battle remains the most interesting plotline (my hunch is Frost).

Marcus Mason got a lot of attention but I'm not sure he makes the final 53. His special teams play is not elite, after watching some tape he struggled in pass protection Thursday (and with all the 5-6 man protection schemes Zorn runs the backs have got to be able to hold it down in that regard). I think four backs is a luxury they might not be able to afford.

Todd Wade could make it despite missing all of camp, and Chris Wilson looks to be in good shape to me as well, espedcially with Jason Taylor iffy and Erasmus James coming off such a lenghty layoff.

Other than that the only guys who have been around here for a while and remain on the bubble are Boschetti, and well, maybe just Boschettie. It's impossible not to love the effort and will he puts forth, but I'm not sure he'll be able to stave off the turk this time around.

The official roster will be released later this afternoon/ early evening, and, upon digesting it, we willsurely pontificate on it as well.

Would be dissapointed to see Mason cut, but with the need at WR, DL, OL and perhaps Safety, I can see were he does not make the team.

Two guys I am NOT pulling for are Wade and Frost. Although Frost had a good preseason, I know that the pressure of the real games will bring back his shank punts. Wade is done IMO and we need to get younger at some time and this year we have some good young players that should contribute as much as him.

Your hunch is that Frost is cut or makes the team? Unclear.

Posted by: SCSkins | August 30, 2008 10:08 AM | Report abuse

cut wade, keep mason. Portis and betts have a recent injury history. so do the OL but there's more of 'em.

Posted by: mark | August 30, 2008 10:09 AM | Report abuse

Curzon,

I still do not like Frost and I think he had a terrible game Thursday, although all the announcers would have you believe he kicked great.

1 good kick
1 kick that out kicked the coverage by 20yrds and allowed a 30 yard run back.
1 SHANK

I think it would be a big mistake to keep him, he has already proved he blows it in the regular season.

Posted by: kmdp4 | August 30, 2008 10:14 AM | Report abuse

kmdp4,

Agree on his actual game on Thursday. He did have a good first game. I was thinking about Zorn and the gamble he takes with keeping a rookie there. Although Frost has the tendency to shank punts, he does kick some decent ones occasionally.

On both Wade and Frost this team needs to not look at playing it safe. Crummey or Geisinger would be a smarter move over Wade.

Well, I've packed my bags
It's time to go
The taxi's waiting
He's blowing his horn
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again

going back to the last thread, we can also sign a player cut from another team to our practice squad. i'm sure the FO/scouts will be looking at the waiver wire.
And we might get two draft picks today - one for a punter and one for mason (emphasize might)

Posted by: Anonymous | August 30, 2008 10:28 AM | Report abuse

Thinking about Tryon. We drafted him in the 4th round. Most teams had him graded as a 6th. If we cut him with the intention of putting him on the practice squad, but another team grabs him, how do WE feel about that?
He didn't get baat on every play. Just on the ones when they threw to the receiver that he was covering. Surely ha had to have coverage at some point in time. We just didn't see it because the play went to another receiver.

Keep Brooks for sure. Frosty the Punter is just such a whiner in his interviews. There is no sulking on the Skins.

Cut Frost because you know he will f up during the season.

After this I can finally set the roster up in Madden to be right.

Though I got some issues with Madden and the coaches available.
First all they list Zorn at 67 years old, and second you still have Gibbs available as a coach. *I ended up picking him up as my Special Teams Coordinator. The honkeys who make madden even watch football?

Posted by: Alex35332 | August 30, 2008 11:16 AM | Report abuse

As much as people complain about Rogers. He looked 4x better his first times out than Tryon did.

I am baffled at how "hard" it is to punt. If I could kick the ball that high or that far... and really only had to do it 5-8 times a game...

What is with the shanks all the time? Give the rookie a chance.

"Funny" story apropos for the title of this post:

http://www.nfl.com/preseason/story?id=09000d5d80a5eee8&template=with-video&confirm=true

"...When I was coach in Tampa," recalls Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy, "we had a player we let go. We get a call from a pawn shop owner who recognized the player and said that he was in the shop upset and wanting to purchase a gun. He wasn't coming after me. He was coming after his position coach."

That position coach was then-Bucs linebackers coach Lovie Smith.

"He was my player," said Smith, now the Bears coach. "I heard the guy was at the pawn shop. We had security in my yard that night. It was serious. Once you've been through a situation like that ..."

If Kelly is injured I think the Skins should keep Anthony Mix. he is 6'5, fast and he plays really well on special teams. I love James Thrash but I would not waste a spot on a guy that we know has diminishing skills that were mediocre to begin with.

Posted by: Keep Mix in the Mix | August 30, 2008 11:23 AM | Report abuse

Cut Tryon. The vision of him alway one step behind the receivers lingers in my mind.

It's all about technique, plus you have the thought of 8 guys coming at you at full speed in the back of your mind as well. Guys shank footballs and soccer balls all the time.

Anyone have a final roster prediction?

Posted by: JinxMan | August 30, 2008 11:26 AM | Report abuse

If the punters came out even I'd hope they go with the rook. I'd like to see them find a way to keep Rob Jackson as well. I'd lean towards keeping Cartwright over Mason due to ST play just hope Portis and Betts stay healthy. Tryon, has he showed anything? Would they keep him just because he's a draft pick.

Posted by: skinswest | August 30, 2008 11:30 AM | Report abuse

I would keep Mason. Portis can't healthy. Betts and Mason can run the ball. The frontline sucks.

Posted by: Heater | August 30, 2008 11:41 AM | Report abuse

I continue to be baffled as to all the love shown to Mason on here. It would be easy to sign him later or find a RB of similar talent if need be. Truth is he is weak in pass protection, doesn't play great teams and will hardly if ever be used. Get over the love affair already. Cut Wade and Tryon. Weren't we tring to sign Jamar Fletcher a year or 2 ago? He got cut and can't be worse than Tryon.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 30, 2008 11:44 AM | Report abuse

Just got word they cut Marcus Mason. This team will not do well from what I seen so far as far coaching is concern. Good luck Marcus

Yea, and the Giants look like they are going to cut Sam Madison or RW McQuarters or both.

Posted by: scampbell1975 | August 30, 2008 11:51 AM | Report abuse

Yeah i was in Bahrain...i'm between jobs on my way to Hawaii. Anyway.

Brooks should be kept. Frost is mediocre at best... dude can't kick a nut punt or keep one from going into the endzone at key moments in the game if his life depended on it. JLC is all wrapped around the "he is the holder" axle. Really..who gives a F^&*? Collins or Colt can hold, and one of them SHOULD be the holder to open up the fake FG game. Colt pops up and lobs one to Sellers releasing from end contain for a first down!! Duh. Well, maybe not Sellers, dude has hands of stone, LOL. You get the point. Brooks equaled Frost all camp AT WORST...and has HUGE upside. To me, its a no brainer, Frost is outta here.

Can Mason play FB as well as TB? Lose Nemo and keep Mason as a TB/FB combo. OR, lose Nemo and mix in Davis at FB in a pinch? I just figure you can save an offensive spot and keep the 4 RB's if you cut Nemo and cna make do with Sellers as the only true FB on the roster. Would also open up some slop room for an extra offensive player if you don't want to have Kelly on IR but want to have 6 WR who are ready to go week 1.

Wade?? see ya later... Jansen?? Whoever said cut him is not thinking too clearly IMO. Guy has been injured with a foot...and has been out for pretty much all of two seasons recently.. But to me, still has a lot left in the tank, is a team leader, and can still knock people off the ball. Me thinks his ankle/foot has been giving him pass protect difficulty recently. No way you keep Wade over Jon Jansen. You don't keep Wade over anybody IMO, LOL. Heyer and Rinehart are your BU tackles.

Kelly is the sticky thorn in the roster side. 'Tana, ARE, Thrash, Thomas, McMullen (to me Dude EARNED his spot)... Kelly?? Leaves Mix on the outside looking in. Who am I overlooking? OR if you IR Kelly, Mix (6'5" 235 is a MUST have in WC Offense) is in? Again who am I overlooking? I haven't had the benefit of seeing the games or much tape. I figure it comes down to Kelly or Mix for the last spot...if they dont go with the lose Nemo plan and keep only 1 FB plan i outlined above.

Well, we should know in 4 plus hours...

Pick it apart if you like, but this is what I have for the team by 4PM today...

Then he needs to practice punts with 8 guys running at him. When they're on the sidelines kicking into the net, have wedge busters line up about 15 yards out and do sprints at the guy.

Perfect practice makes perfect.

Jansen has been crippled for years...its time to let him go or make him the highest paid backup T in the league. Seriously, watch him come up to the line...it's like its hurts him to even walk, and it has been that way for at least 3 years. He's just too much of a liability now.

It would be funny if we had the highest paid backup T AND 3rd string QB, in Todd Collins. Cuz he's proven that he is a system guy only, and we don't have his system.

I will pick it apart thank you. Actually it seems mostly right except for a few glaring spots.

1) Tryon- practice squad Richardson- practice squad or team. Cedric Holt was even worse than tryon (if possible), he's gone.

2) Hamilton lookes pretty good, practice squad

3) Can't PUP Kelly, must IR him. If he wasn't PUP'ed early he can't be now.

4) A few more of those guys cab hit the PS

Keep Brooks, dump Frost. Brooks has tremendous upside while Frost will be average at best. A few years from now when we look back at the 2008 draft, Brooks and Brennan may salvage what was otherwise a bust.

For what it's worth I saw Calais Campbell playing for the Cards against the Broncos last night. He got in on some plays. Evidently the Cards are playing him at backup DT - maybe they already realize that he's too slow to be an NFL DE - just speculating of course.
