D Tackles: Nose vs. Three Technique

A lot of people just kind of figure that defensive tackles are all the same. When they watch the Redskins they know there are two of them down there in the middle of the muckity-muck, and that's about it.

But in reality the duties are different in the Skins system. The Redskins lack a real heavyweight, Sam Adams-type of two-gap nose tackle. They haven't had a guy like that for a long time. Instead, their linemen are generally a little more limber and little more versatile, but there are definite differences between the two tackle spots.

They use a nose tackle and a three-technique. For the most part, Kedric Golston and Anthony Montgomery are the nose tackles. They see a lot of double-teams, they are expected to do the dirty work and stuff the run. Ain't nothing sexy about it.

Now, three-technique is also hardly a glamour spot, but generally they want a more athletic, explosive player here. Cornelius Griffin is the starter, he has been since 2004, and it's imperative Griffin try to get into the backfield at a similar rate as he did in 2004, when he played at an all-world level.

Size isn't quite as important, as you line up a bit off the line, but a powerful first step and sound technique are imperative. The Skins want the three technique to be able to shoot the gap and wreak some havoc in the backfield. When the quarterback steps up to deliver the ball, the three should be in his face.

Lorenzo Alexander, for example, is backing up Griffin - and doing so quite well, particularly with his pass-rushing skills - and I'll let him talk about the difference between the positions from here:

"Especially being the size I am [6-1, 300 pounds] it's hard taking a lot of pounding," Alexander said. "I can almost guarantee you're getting doubled every play at nose. If you're at the three you get freed up a little more. They leave you singled up if you're more athletic, and that helps me out a lot. I'm not 320 [pounds] like Monty, so I don't want to live down there, but if I have to I'll go down there and scrap it out."

If Demetric Evans ends up playing a ton of left end Thursday because of Jason Taylor's knee injury, then I'll be interested to see if Alexander ends up getting Evans's spot as the inside pass rusher in the nickel package on third down. Alexander had a heck of a preseason and is quick and slithery enough to make things happen there. (Griffin often moves to the nose spot on passing downs.)

Regardless of which set of players is deployed, getting sound production from the interior of the line makes everything else go. It's a fundamental building block, and, coming off that preseason performance in Carolina, it's gotta be stout against the run and dynamic enough to prevent quarterbacks from stepping up into the pocket on passing downs.

"We've got ends outside in Andre [Carter] and Jason that are going to be making cats step up," Alexander said, "so at D tackle you need to be there. You've got to make plays, because they gonna make it easy for us. You've got to get that push inside so we can collapse people. All the QBs in the league are good - if they can step up and throw the ball, they gonna make the play. So the tackles have to be the guy who makes him feel like he's being trapped. Our defense is definitely set up that way."

Cant say im worried about there running game. Fletcher can drop jacobs, he runs to high rellies on his power, not happening with our Lb corps. We have great outside takling corners in smoot rogers and springs for when the get chippy with Bradshaw. need to watch Dought on Boss he stands no chance tackling him in the opend field i would prefer to bee Rocky on Boss. Running game we can stop well have a tougher time with their WR. I would love to see Landry lay out plexiglass, hes there best weapon but you nail him early he will revert back to dropsy days of old.

Not really worried about their running game either. With essentially the same defense (plus Phillip Daniels), we held two pro bowl running backs in the last two games of last year to a combined 21 yards. What worries me is seeing Reed Doughty matched up man-to-man against anybody in pass coverage, as well as the question marks surrounding the health of our other 3 starting DBs.

Who would you start for fantasy this week? I've got 2 RB spots and this list:

Joseph Addai vs. CHI
Reggie Bush vs. TB
Larry Johnson @ NE
Thomas Jones @ MIA
Darren McFadden vs. DEN

Clearly Addai gets one spot, who takes the other? I'm leaning towards Bush, despite popular opinion, I'm thinking he breaks out this year.

Is first supposed to be synonymous with winning? In that case:

"Sometimes when you win, you really lose, and sometimes when you lose, you really win, and sometimes when you win or lose, you actually tie, and sometimes when you tie, you actually win or lose. Winning or losing is all one organic mechanism, from which one extracts what one needs."

Maybe I'm not authorized but 500 bonus points should be awarded if you can match the quote with the movie.

Truth, indeed an interior linemen isn't a position for the weak, but linemen can play into their mid to late 30's.

Runnning Backs have it the worst. Sometimes they have 3/4 of the defense, and maybe 3/4 of the offense lying on them at a given time.

Could not, would not want to be a running back.

Art Shell had a nice anecdote about playing the line at Gene Upshaw's memorial service yesterday at the Kennedy Center:

Shell talked about their days together on the Raiders' offensive line and of Upshaw’s propensity for nonstop chatter.
“Right now, believe me,” Shell said, “he’s wearing God’s ear out. ..... We’d go back to the huddle, and I’d say, ‘Man, don’t talk trash to that guy. You have to block him all day.’ He’d say, ‘I’ll knock his head off all day.’.”

The one thing Doughty does well is tackle... He's a safety, so he's usually in position to tackle when the receivers make the catch in front of him. But I agree -- the front seven has to pressure the QB or the DBs will be hard pressed to cover tall receivers.

LOL @ Brown's 11:51 AM.

Yeah, I know a dude that said when the lights go off it's all the same.

Speaking of marriage, a few years ago me and my boys put together a list of a male's status regarding dating women...

Probable - You're kind of thinking about settling down but you enjoy the single life too much.

Questionable - You've been with your fair share with women. You're strongly thinking about settling with that special lady you've met, but you're also nervous.

Doubtful - You might as well go ahead and lock it down with your girl (start dating exclusively). You don't really hang out with the boys as much, at least not as if you were single still.

Out - You have started the path toward a long term relationship. More than likely you're living with each other. You're hanging with the boys about twice every month. And every other Sunday you have to particpate in a arts and craft workshop.

IR - You're engaged or you have your lady knocked up.

PUP - You're married with children.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We were drunken fools when put this together.

The biggest thing I'll look for vs NYG is how our defense compares to the close of last season, when it was dominant.

Since its almost all the same guys as the finish for last year, the question for me is this: Do they pick up where they left off? If so, this team can go a long way.

TE - I got a Vista computer. I'm going to have my friend put some software on it, and hopefully buy some RAM for it. It has 2 gigs now, but can hold 4, although I might have to only put in 1 to make 3 total because of the 32 bit OS. Either way, as long as I can get office on there, it's nice.

Posted by: Karen | September 3, 2008 12:25 PM | Report abuse

Hard to go wrong either way. But why not top it off with a game day thong? Burgundy with an R embroidered in gold. A nice/lycra polyester blend with the interior featuring a silk screen of Eli Manning's face.

Skinz, those are interesting calls. Before last year, I cited Griffin and Springs as the keys to the defense. Turned out to be Fletcher, but all three were important.

Your calls for Heyer and Randy Thomas are also intriguing. Thomas has been very good and a big drop-off there would be a major problem.

MVP: Skinz, I'm with you about Springs for MVP. He's playing for a lot this season. It could be considered a contract year for him, even if he doesn't retire he'll want to end it with a good season. I see him playing multiple positions also. I like Springs in as the nickle CB, he's more dangerous.

Off. MVP: Clinton Portis will once again be among the better RB's, but wont get credited for it. I see 1500 total yds. 14 TD's

Def. MVP: London Fletcher. Is the "QB" of the defense Has amassed over 100 tackles every year since 2000, however last year was his lowest total (129) since 2001 (119).

Most Improved in 08': LaRon Landry. This dude was playing (o)possum this preseason. Showed last year that he's ready to become a top 5 safety. Has a mean streak that reminiscent of Sean Taylor. Penalties for late hits last year will benefit him and the entire secondary this year.

Biggest Disapointment: I'm sorry to say this and I hope I'm wrong but I gotta say Jason Campbell. He still holds the ball way too long, and looks like an anvil in the pocket. I'm really hoping that he has a breakout season. But it still looks like he needs work with his mechanics and decision making.

Most impactful rookie: Chad Rinehart/Fred Davis. Since the oline is aging and injury riddled the last two seasons, Chad will more than likely be called on this season. Can see him playing either guard position (especially LG). Remember how we used to struggle putting the ball in the end zone inside the 20? Problem solved with Fred Davis. Inside the 20 I envision Davis as the TE, Cooley in the Slot, Split RB's with Portis and Betts.

Washington Redskins

Offensive scheme: New coach Jim Zorn and coordinator Sherman Smith have implemented a traditional West Coast offense: a quick-rhythm passing game featuring short, precise throws. The foundation of the running game is a zone scheme, more of a horizontal stretch style. Zorn is an excellent playcaller, but he'll be tested in other areas as a first-time head coach. Based on their personnel, the Redskins may tilt toward run-heavy game plans, three- and five-step drops and quick timing passes early in the season. But Zorn wants to open up the offense and eventually should allow QB Jason Campbell to stretch the field.

Defensive scheme: Washington's 4-3 front and defensive terminology will remain mostly unchanged from last season, which should ease the transition to a new coordinator. But whereas Gregg Williams leaned heavily on Cover 2, Greg Blache may try out more aggressive schemes. A defensive line coach by trade, Blache values good perimeter coverage that helps the front four create more pressure and allows the strong safety to stay in the box. He also wants a better interior push from his tackles, though in this defense the front four are coached to eat up blockers and allow the linebackers to run free to the ball.

One thing I came to appreciate about Gibbs 2.0, even if it was ugly, was his slower style of play. It had several benefits. It kept games close, so the 4th quarter would matter. Gibbs believed character would win in the 4th quarter. The Skins ran fewer plays, which would lead to less injuries and a stronger team in December. It meant the starters would play a higher % of snaps, so the depth players weren't on the field as much in any given game. Which is an asset if your depth isn't that strong.

Zorn is a complete contrast. He is very focused on a fast tempo. It should be more watchable. I like that Zorn will play to win, unlike Gibbs who played not to lose. But the up tempo will also mean our depth is more important, and I have my doubts as to that being a good thing.

Posted by: AL Zeke etc | September 3, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

Giants 24 Skins 3

Campbell will have 3 turnovers, 2 fumbles and an int. 1 of them will be returned for a TD. The defense gets ground to nothing because they're on the field all game.

Posted by: LetsFaceIt-TheySuck! | September 3, 2008 1:51 PM | Report abuse

Wow! Some folks on this blog with good heads on their shoulders are picking the Redskins to win this one. I hope you're all right. I can't seem to muster the faith right now. I know we've been keeping it vanilla in the preseason, but something about our offensive performance the last two games is too reminiscent of '06 for me. Anyway I hope to be proven wrong, but right now I'm predicting 17-10 Giants.

Who would you start for fantasy this week? I've got 2 RB spots and this list:

Joseph Addai vs. CHI
Reggie Bush vs. TB
Larry Johnson @ NE
Thomas Jones @ MIA
Darren McFadden vs. DEN

Clearly Addai gets one spot, who takes the other? I'm leaning towards Bush, despite popular opinion, I'm thinking he breaks out this year.

Posted by: psps23 | September 3, 2008 11:11 AM

Addai, of course, is an every-week starter, and I would also go with Jones for the other slot. One, he's running against the 'Phins, and two, he's my "sleeper" pick this year, a quality back who will be running behind an improved Jets' o-line in an offense that now has a healthy, legit QB and passing game.
