D. Thomas starts in place of Kelly (updated)

Just got the roster changes for today's game against the Chiefs and the only noticeable change is at the wide receiver position, where second-year receiver Devin Thomas will replace Malcolm Kelly in the starting lineup. It will be Thomas' third career start and second of the season (not his first as I earlier wrote; he started in three WR set with Kelly and Santana Moss against Tampa Bay).

While the move could be because of lingering pain in Kelly's thumb, more likely the team is just looking for something different on offense. Any spark at this point would be good for the team. As the team's fourth receiver, Thomas has just four receptions for 26 yards this season. Kelly has logged significantly more minutes but hasn't fared much better: 73 yards on seven catches.

Before last week's game at Carolina, Coach Jim Zorn noted that he was impressed with Thomas' progress and said that he intended to give Thomas more playing time.

"[Devin's] been coming on at practice, giving greater effort, paying attention to those things that will earn him the right to be on the field," Zorn said then.

There are no other surprises with the lineup today. As expected, Glenn Pakulak will punt for the second week in a row and Hunter Smith, still recovering from a groin injury suffered two weeks ago against Tampa Bay, is not active.

The Redskins will carry seven offensive linemen, as they have every week, but depth is a huge concern. D'Anthony Batiste and undrafted free agent Edwin Williams are the reserve linemen. Batiste struggled last week when he replaced Chris Samuels at left tackle, and Williams, a rookie out of Maryland, is active today for the first time in his brief career.

So 'paying attention' is now grounds for handing someone a starting position. Man we are setting the bar awfully low on this team. How about activating Marko Mitchell and giving the start to someone who might actually produce...not DT

If Devin Thomas played cornerback his name would be Carlos Rogers. He has dropped more passes in the few attempts he has had in 2 years than anyone!

Having said that, go Skins!!!!!!!!!!!

TE,

I guess I'd defer to the players and former players that are saying the talent isn't there and it starts with the FO. Also, Zorn wasn't hired originally as the HC as we all know. I think he's been put in an awful situation and is taking too much blame. He missed a step or two climbing the coaching ladder.
You can't win without talent.

Both comments are very relevant. Showing up, you can start. Drop a potential game changing pass that could have set up a win,... GUESS WHAT, THAT EARN's YOU A START NEXT WEEK!!!!!! Just piss poor. I hope he can make some plays, but I am all out of hope.

"Any spark would be good for this team."

Agree to agree. That's why I'm so incredibly excited to see Marcus Mason active, so he can get his 2 carries for 7 yards, while 'WR-TE-WR' continue to, um, uh, "develop," while Marko Mitchell gets to spark the bench.

This change needed to be made 2 weeks ago when it was clear Kelly wasn't cut out to be a starter, at least to this point in his career.

I explain him as follows:

Tony Romo = Danny White

And if he keeps playing the way he has the past few games, that will change to:

Tony Romo = Gary Hogeboom

Posted by: rich20ssu | October 18, 2009 12:26 PM | Report abuse

Campbell is not playing well, but he isn't horrible either.

He isn't decisive and seems to be playing either too fast or too slow. He is a poor fit in Jim Zen's west coast offense, like a pair of jeans that have been hastily made into shorts, also known as "jorts."

Matt Cassel, however, will look like Tom Brady, fashionably dressed with a super model wife while bosting jaw dropping stats as QB of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Redskins defense will be powerless and succumb to his charms.

The Chiefs need to force Campbell into making stupid decisions and consistently change what he is seeing in terms of coverage and blitz schemes, or just sit back and watch him screw throw into double coverage while the open receiver is flailing his arms in distress.

Kansas City simply allowed too much yardage to the Cowboys in Week 5, but can the anemic Redskins muster the capability to take advantage of this obvious weakness?

Who Is Anthony Aldrige, and why is he on one knee on the sidelines?

Marko?

Polo?

Tamba Hali is someone the Redskins will have to account for off the edge as Campbell was sacked five times last week. Expect Tamba to "go off" and post a banner day against this patch work line of the Redskins, adding to his 2 sacks on the season.

HTTR!

I am trying to remember.......earlier this week. It was stated by Zorn and/or Da Mayor that the reason Marko Mitchell wasn't active was to keep all of our RB's active...to try to get a spark in the run game.

So now, we de-activate Alridge and still keep Marko de-activated.......

The problem is the o-line you could have harrison and wayne out there and it wouldnt matter if soup does not have time, im ok with them drafting the two wrs, but that third pick in the second should have been used on o-line that could be helping right now.

I really believe that Zorn is afraid to play Anthony Aldridge. What if Aldridge shows explosiveness and speed. What if Aldridge breaks some long runs and make defenders miss. What if Aldridge is a baller. How will Zorn explain Clinton's slow plodding, mostly ineffective method of running. "Clinton's a very good blocker???

A weekly report from the "fresh set of eyes":

Before one can understand and resolve a complex issue, there should be a foundation, a base, a precedence set in place to begin the process of evaluation. Having said that, I have no fricking idea what type of offensive Coach Zorn is running. It appears to be a hybrid of Marty ball and Gibbs-2 conservatism. It’s unlike any version of a west coast offense that I have been involved in or have studied. It’s as though, Zorn has cut and pasted 2 or 3 types of offenses together and told his players that it is a west coast version. The west coast offense relies heavily on a strong passing game, which does not exist here. The WCO features a quick explosive running game, which does not exist here. The WCO is designed to put the ball in the hands of your big receivers, which does not exist here. I would suggest that Zorn utilize the only running back who can offer some explosiveness ( Anthony Aldridge). I am at practice every day and this Markco Mitchell seems to be unstoppable and for the life of me, I can’t understand why he is not on the field on Sundays. I will continue my evaluation and will submit a weekly report as requested.

No, the first pick would be a horrendous thing, because it would tempt the clown shoes to draft some glamour player; they need to upgrade the OL before anything else. Yeah, you could take Colt McCoy with the first pick, or Bradford, but if you don't upgrade the line, you're going to see Houston Texans and David Carr Part Deuex
