Final: Redskins hold on for 13-7 win over rival Cowboys
Updated, 11:40 p.m.
Brian Orakpo had dominated Alex Barron all night in the Redskins' opener and had been held several times. And on the game's final play, Barron was forced to grab Orakpo around the neck to prevent a sack, wiping out a touchdown and ending the game with the Redskins squeaking out a win, 13-7.
The final quarter featured very little production from either offense until the very late stages.
Washington punted three plays into the quarter, and Dallas took over on its own 18-yard line. Staying in the run-first mind-set for the first four plays, they moved the ball to the 45-yard line on carries from Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice.
A block in the back wiped out one reception, and after a one-yard pass and incompletion, Brian Orakpo was held to turn third and 11 into third and 21. A false start penalty pushed it back even more and Dallas eventually pounced.
The Redskins offense continued to struggle, however, punting after just four plays. Dallas took over but quickly faced a crucial third and 2. The Cowboys handed off to Choice, and he was stonewalled by London Fletcher and LaRon Landry for a loss of four, forcing a punt.
The Redskins took over on their own 23 needing to eat up some clock by running the ball -- which they had struggled to do all day.
Clinton Portis picked up eight yards on second down, and McNabb hit Santana Moss for 10 yards on third down to keep the drive alive. An 11-yard completion to Cooley moved the ball into Dallas territory, and on first and 15, Portis broke off an 18-yard run.
Larry Johnson rushed for eight yards on the next two plays and facing a crucial third and 2, rookie Trent Williams was called for a false start, pushing the Redskins back five yards. The Redskins didn't convert but Graham Gano nailed a 49-yard field goal to increase the lead to 13-7 with 1 minute 50 seconds remaining.
Dallas took over on its 19-yard line with one more chance to win the game.
Romo hit Dez Bryant for 15 yards to start the drive, then Bryant again for 13 yards to move the ball to the 47-yard line. A false start pushed the Cowboys back, and Romo hit Roy Williams and Jason Witten on back-to-back plays to pick up a first down.
On first down from the Redskins' 42, Romo looked deep to Austin but the ball floated short and Carlos Rogers leapt for what looked like a sure interception. Instead, however, he dropped the ball. Landry nearly picked the next attempt, and another incompletion set up fourth and 10. Romo hit Austin for 29 yards to keep things alive, however.
Two straight incompletions left just three seconds on the clock and one more chance for the Cowboys to leave Landover victorious. Romo dropped back and avoided the rush, stepping forward and moving right before finding Williams in the front corner of the end zone for what appeared to be the game-winning score. Instead, however, the yellow flag indicated Alex Barron's latest hold on Brian Orakpo would decide the game, with the Redskins holding on for a 13-7 win.

3rd quarter:
The Redskins started the half with the ball and the momentum from DeAngelo Hall's first half-ending fumble return and a big opening return by Devin Thomas, but saw a bizarre drive end with no points and the Cowboys pull within three.
Big completions to Cooley and Moss moved the Redskins from their own 33 to the Cowboys 24-yard line, After an apparent field goal by Graham Gano from 36 yards, the Cowboys were called for being offside and the Redskins offense came back on the field with another shot at the end zone.
McNabb appeared to be picked off two plays later, but an illegal contact penalty wiped out the interception and gave the Redskins first and goal at the five. Three consecutive incompletions forced another field goal attempt, but this time punter Josh Bidwell couldn't handle the snap and the Redskins decision to take points off the board backfired.
The two teams traded punts on their next possession, but Bidwell's effort went just 27 yards and the Cowboys took over at the Redskins 34-yard line.
The Cowboys came out in the Wildcat formation. Tashard Choice and Marion Barber, moved Dallas to the four-yard line. (Albert Haynesworth registered his first tackle and assist on the drive). On second and goal from the four, Tony Romo hit Miles Austin for a touchdown to pull the Cowboys within 10-7.
Devin Thomas returned the ensuing kickoff to the 43-yard line, and the third quarter ended with the Redskins driving inside Cowboys' territory.

2nd quarter:
Neither offense could find the end zone, but Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall did on the final play of the half with a strip and fumble return that sent the Redskins into the half with a two-score lead.
Dallas continued to have no problem moving the ball in the second quarter and went into the half with 172 total yards. But moving the ball in the middle of the field didn't result in any points. The Redskins went into the half with a 10-0 lead.
The quarter started with an offensive pass interference call on Dez Bryant on third and four that pushed Dallas back to the Redskins 16-yard line. An incompletion forced Dallas to try a 34-yard field goal, but David Buehler pushed the attempt wide right and Washington maintained its three-point lead.
The Redskins went three and out on their next possession - just their second of the game - but the drive did provide two notes. Starting guard Derrick Dockery was out of the lineup with backup Kory Lichtensteiger in the game. And rookie Trent Williams was cleanly beaten by DeMarcus Ware on third down as the Cowboys linebacker drilled McNabb to force an incompletion and a punt.
The Cowboys picked up a first down on their next possession on three straight runs. (They nearly had a touchdown when Marion Barber broke through on a run, but the play was stopped because Dallas called timeout just before the snap). Rocky McIntosh sacked Romo for a loss of five on second down, and Dallas eventually punted.
The Redskins started to move the ball to start their next drive as McNabb found Santana Moss for back-to-back completions of 16 and 17 yards, but they eventually punted and Byron Westbrook downed the kick at the Cowboys one-yard line.
The Cowboys started to put together an impressive drive, marching nearly three quarters of the field at the end of the half.
Runs of eight and three yards moved Dallas out of the shadow of their end zone, and on first down from the 12 yard line, Romo connected with Miles Austin for 12 yards. Several short runs set up another pass to Austin, this time for 21 yards to the Redskins 34-yard line.
A delay of game penalty pushed Dallas back, however, and after the two-minute warning two ugly incompletions from Romo forced a Cowboys punt.
The Redskins eventually punted the ball back to Dallas and the Cowboys looked to get some points before the half. Instead, with just four seconds left in the half Romo flipped the ball to Tashard Choice in the flat, where DeAngelo Hall stripped the running back, picked up the ball and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown to send the Redskins into the half leading 10-0.
1st quarter
Dallas was moving the ball easily to open the game, beginning with a 15 yard pass to Miles Austin that was followed by two more first downs. But with the ball at the Redskins' 37-yard line, Dallas tried to force two screen passes to rookie receiver Dez Bryant that went for a combined one yard.
DeAngelo Hall, who had two tackles on the drive, then batted quarterback Tony Romo's third-down attempt and Dallas was forced to punt. Albert Haynesworth played just one snap of the seven on the possession.
Offensively, the Redskins appeared relatively sharp early on. Donovan McNabb found Santana Moss on third and 8 for a 16-yard gain, and after two Clinton Portis runs, McNabb scrambled 17 yards to pick up another first down.
A 14-yard completion to Chris Cooley moved the Redskins to the 13-yard line, but they were unable to convert after DeMarcus Ware stuffed a Portis run on second down and pressured McNabb into an incompletion on third. Washington settled for a 29-yard field goal from Graham Gano to take a 3-0 lead.
Dallas needed just two plays to move from its own 28-yard line to the Redskins 35 on its next drive, with Romo connecting with Felix Jones on a 24-yard swing pass and with Miles Austin for 13 yards.
Roy Williams made a nice grab on third and 9, holding on to the ball despite a hard hit by London Fletcher to give the Cowboys first down at the 23. The Redskins appeared to have held Dez Bryant for a one-yard loss on the next play, but London Fletcher was called for unnecessary roughness. Fletcher's hit came with Bryant still going to the ground, but the call moved Dallas to the 12-yard line.
A Marion Barber halfback option incompletion followed by a six yard run set up third and four to start the second quarter with the Redskins still leading by three.

It's pretty clear what Dallas' game plan is on offense. Quick misdirection plays to attack the outside via pitch outs to Barber/Jones or quick screen passes to the outside. Testing the LBs ability to cover and pursue in space.
What worries me is that this sets up some quick hitters up the middle late in the game...

If we can score now and after the half, we can win this thing 13-7 given the way this defense is playing.

I told you so to all the Deangelo haters. This is his year. Huge game so far. Mcnabb, Moss, Cooley, and our tackles look great. Can't tell how Portis looks as the run blocking has been pretty weak. Sellers and Rabach look horrible. I love them both but they are done now. Don't know about running the 1-5-5 on third and one, but other than that this looks like a dominant D all around. They held Rocky and he still sacked that idiot. I am so happy about this Defense. Haynesworth needs to check himself though, don't know what to say about that situation just yet. Still have some hope for him, but its fading.

Why in the world did Wash refuse the holding penalty with 4 seconds left in the half? It's not like they were giving them an extra down. There was 4 seconds left and they let them be 10 yds. closer to the endzone. Am I missing something?

I would have rather had a first down, but at least it forces the Cowboys get a touchdown to win. Gutsy call that would have cost his Shannahan his head if the kicker would have missed. I guess having Elam during his prime makes a coach believe in their kickers.

When was the last time we had a Defensive coordinator who called agressive defensive plays at the end of a game when we're trying to hold on to a slim lead? I am instantly thrilled with Haslet. this sends a message loud and clear to the rest of our opponents. The Redskins D will attack you to the very end.

Why aren't any of you angry with Landry? On the play after Stone Hands caught air, so did Landry.
Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | September 13, 2010 12:09 AM
I cursed him at first too, but on the replay, that ball kind of popped out from behind bryant and was moving fast. He just didn't have time to react. CR22 had all day to size that one up and he just missed it....AGAIN. Pretty standard.

DeAngelo said I am a selfish dick and wants his iPhone back. I told him that I'm a dominant defensive player.

I predicted that the Cowpuke's O-line would cost them the game, but I didn't think it would happen quite that way. Orackpo would have planted Romo into the turf if he hadn't been held on the last play. I've never seen so many clothesline holds in one game.

Our D played better than I thought they would.
McNabb does need some peeps to throw it to.

Um, can you and whoever else just FALL BACK off your Landry hate for just a night? DAMN! Yes he missed a pick, but he would've had to make a SERIOUS adjustment to even make the pick. DAMN! Landry has had his ups and downs over the years, but he had a good game tonight! Made key tackles and made his presence known -- stopped a few WRs short of 1st down conversions, WOW!!!!! CAN NOT back off the LANDRY hate for one fu_king night! BE. EASY!!!! And take the bad with the good. And he did way more good than bad!

Loved:
- play of Landry, Dhall and Rodgers. Lets hope K-Moore can heal up quickly b/c he is big improvement over reedy d
- moss/cooley looked better tah they have in 2 years
- Agressive def gameplan
- no turnovers
- much improved oline play
- mcnabb getting rid of ball/feeling pressure well
- T Williams...yeah he had the penalty, and got beat some...but dude was playing his first ever game....against Ware....
nervous about:
- all wide receivers not named Moss. I am no d. thomas fan but i gotta think he may bring something more to the table than some of these schlubs
- AH
- Scoring TDs...
- our punter

All I'm saying is that they wont be hard to coach this week. They know they have work to do. They are in a great place.
Teams on the rise need to win games like this... and as others have said, no way zornskins win this game.
BTW... Clinon Portis is the FING MAN. He balled balls out tonight from start to finish.

Agree 100%. What a breath of fresh air not having to watch a "prevent" defense give the game away. We may have been burned a couple times but really like the new aggressive approach - and they'll only get better.

I think that Thomas needs to see more time at WR. Especially in the red zone. If he was the target instead of Armstrong for those fades in the end zone, I think we would have had a TD. Thats when you need Thomas' size. Or maybe put Fred Davis out there in that situation.

I only saw Landry blow 1 play tonight and it wasn't that missed pick. That got on him too quick and no one woulda caught that. The one blown play was the whiff on the sack. Other than that Landry was outstanding. As one of his biggest detractors I will gladly eat 14 bowls of creamed chipped crow if he can continue to play at this level.

One of the more encouraging things I saw was the running game with Portis start to click later in the game. I'm not sure why LJ was on the field during the Skins' last drive. Running it up the gut with Portis would seem to have been the smarter play, since the Cowgirls' D looked gassed by that point.
An ugly win is still a win.

In the NFL, every win is a great win, especially for a team coming off a 4-12 campaign. But this one was even better than that.
Loved the running game late in the 4th. Loved Durty30 doing his thing the right way all night. Loved the push from Orakpo and the pressure, which was steady all night. Loved DHall in coverage. Even CR22 looked decent (stone hands excepted). Gano was money. #5 was a steady hand in the face of some tough pressure. Receivers were not a high point, though. Way too many drops. Silverback was solid against one of the league's best, and the block on the Cooley swing pass was like the scene from The Blind Side. Classic. Big fan of the effort CP26 showed all night, especially on the blitz pickups. And the gold pants . . . totally classic. All in all, a very good start for a team looking for a redefined identity.

NateinthePDX that's because a bunch of the same stuff that would doom the team to a loss last year, showed up tonight. Poor running game, only two play makers at WR. Dropped balls at crucial times. Dropped interceptions. Poor special team play. but they found a way to win in spite of all that. It's a good place to start.

Posted by: vegasskinsfan | September 13, 2010 12:47 AM | Report abuse
I loved Landry, Rogers(even with the drop, its who he is as someone pointed out) and Dhall.
Doughty was exposed for what he is, too. Hoping DMo comes back soon. And is ready to ball.
Haslett called a great game. So did Lil Shanny for the most part. Players failed to make a few plays in key spots. Too many drops.
Sellers still sucks.
Rak was the bomb, if barron doesn't hold, Romo gets sacked or throws a rushed flutter ball.
I'm loving the win all the more for the front running coward being in the house, collinsworh serially felating the entire cowboy roster not named barron, and that punk azz r harrison basically guaranteeing a girls win on the lame azz nbc pregame show. So a loud and sincere FU to all those bithses. Ha.

Co-sing that ish... Ashburn he have a kicker! Kicks it deep and was accurate on FGs!
Thins I'd like to see improvement on:
Running game
Running defense
Of course we still need a true downfield threat. That's been the stat quo for about 30 something years now... When they send Moss deep they cloud Cooley and that's it... NO passing game...

Jason,
I'm not sure which bother's me more, the tine-tested NFL wisdom of never taking points off of the board, or the fact that just one more first down in the 4th and the issue never would have been in doubt down the stretch. McNabb sure didn't look accurate.
Plus, what's with calling two corner fades in a row? It's the most difficult play to pull off in the book.

Seriously: WTF was Phillips trying to achieve at the end of the first half? What was his best case outcome? He wants to throw his player under the bus for not getting down, but the Redskins well executed a standard play: hold up the runner and strip the ball. Zorn might call some whacky swinging gate, but even he knows the play there is to kneel down and go to the room to get a cheeseburger. Classic, phillips, classic.

We have a lot of work to do, but we played with guts and passion. And got the win. We also did a good job of making the Cowboys line get all those holding calls.
McNabb will get there. He missed some time with that ankle injury, especially that 3rd preseason game, so he's a few weeks behind. I have faith he will improve.
Defense is only going to get better as they get comfortable in the system. And when Kareem Moore returns.

We must score when we get the ball after the half.
We can win this thing 13-7 given the way the defense is playing.
