Daniel Snyder on City Paper lawsuit: 'All they had to do was apologize'

By Rick Maese

Daniel Snyder says he never sought the job of a Washington City Paper reporter who wrote critical articles about his tenure as Redskins team owner. Instead, Snyder says he simply requested a retraction.

"We were hoping that he'd apologize, hoping they'd say sorry," Snyder said Friday afternoon in an interview in Dallas. "All they had to do was apologize and retract their lies."

But when they didn't, Snyder filed suit this week against the City Paper's parent company, Atalaya Capital Management, seeking $2 million in general damages plus unspecified punitive damages and court costs, alleging the City Paper and writer Dave McKenna have libeled and defamed him

"My father was a journalist," Snyder said Friday, speaking for the first time publicly since the suit was filed. "And I've never sued anybody in the media. And I handle criticism -- I mean, I get that all day long. You guys made a living off it. And that's fine; that's
your job and I respect that. But you can't call people names, criminals. You can't make fun of someone's wife and her effort for breast cancer awareness as national spokesperson for the National Football League as a breast cancer survivor. It's just wrong.

"What's wrong is wrong, and this is wrong. And this guy crossed the line. Even if he does any homework, I don't know him. It's not personal. This is just an issue where somebody did something flat-out wrong."

Asked about the timing of the lawsuit, Snyder said the team held out hope the City Paper would respond to the team's requests. "Apology," Snyder said. "That's it."

Asked about his preferred resolution to the case, Snyder said: "Maybe they'll come back and apologize now. But I couldn't care less about him or his newspaper or what have you. What's right is right, and what's wrong is wrong."

Right and wrong are such fluid definitions to Snyder and the Redskins organization, it's hard to tell from one day to the next where the line is....

On-line versions of newspapers make their ad revenues based on the numbers of clicks on the site. WCP must have increased its annual revenues by a couple few orders of magnitude as of this week.

Posted by: dcsween | February 4, 2011 2:22 PM | Report abuse

If the paper is smart they will just show up to court, sans legal representation and defend themselves. There is no jury in DMV that will side with Snyder on this.

Snyder and Donovan think they can intimidate the paper by pointing out how expensive it will be to fight the lawsuit, how expensive lawyers are etc.

Better yet, there are probably dozens of lawyers out there who would take this case pro bono...That way they could counter sue.

SUE EVERYBODY!

Man is it hard to be a Redskins fan anymore or what?

You can't make fun of someone's wife...

By Rick Maese | February 4, 2011; 2:07 PM ET

He's got a point here. This is Redskins Insider. Usually we make fun of people's mothers, and give pleasure to (or take pleasure from) their wives.

Posted by: beep-beep | February 4, 2011 2:23 PM | Report abuse

Dan haven't done everything right nor am I a big fan of his. However, if this statement is true"You can't make fun of someone's wife and her effort for breast cancer awareness". Then Fck that he is doing the right thing. I am a person that have lost good friends to cancer. I hope he takes the paper down. What man wouldn't defend his wife?

This has probably been answered elsewhere, but I'm wondering:

Is there any recourse for a city that wants to force its owner out? Can any appeal be made to the NFL that an owner's actions are not only destroying a team, but damaging the institution of pro football in some way?

Has there ever been an owner more completed hated (and more completely hateful) than Snyder?

Snyder is desperately trying to shift this issue toward his wife's illness. Shameful exploitation of her, and City Paper went nowhere near that private matter. Pure Snyder spin, very badly executed, as always.

It's truly beyond belief to see him acting as the arbiter of "right & wrong." He'd be the last to know. He has zero self-awareness.

Dan you are so dumb. I don't understand how you got so rich. Seriously how does somebody who is so incompetent and unlikeable become so successful other than just by being a greedy and horrible human? Did his family help him start his fortune> I seriously don't get it.

I don't read the Washington City paper so I hadn't even heard of this until he started whining and suing about it. Glad he brought attention to it though because it really succinctly describes all of the horrible decisions he's made as Redskins owner. I remembered most of these, but to see them all lined up one by one really helped to focus my anger even more toward this schmuck.

Out of curiosity, is there a specific part of the article that he is claiming is slander or libel? Everything I read was stuff I had seen reported before. There was an editorial slant to it as the writer clearly and justifiably disliked Snyder, but newspapers do that all the time. So what part is Dan saying is a lie? I tried so hard to like Snyder and give him a break because he claims to love the Redskins and wasn't penny pinching at least when it came to signing players, but he just has made it impossible at this point. I thought maybe he would be like Steinbrenner, another rich idiot who didn't know how to run a team but eventually figured it out, but I've lost all hope for him not being a pompous moron. I don't spend any money on the Redskins any more, but I'm only one man. I'm scared the good ol Redskins of my childhood will never return as this guy runs the franchise into the ground for the next 40 years or so. Please make him go away.

Snyder is mimicking George Costanza's circumstances when he was accompanying Jerry to the SAAB dealer and went postal when he believed his Twix was "stolen" by a dealership employee.

Costanza subsequently went on a crusade for justice stating all he wanted was the Twix that was rightfully his, an apology and for the employee to be fired.

Where on earth did McKenna make fun of Snyder's wife? This is what the article says: "His wife, Tanya Snyder, is out selling the transformation, too. Last week she went on local TV to tell an interviewer that he is now surrounded by “better people,” and that he’s “grown and he’s evolved.”

Well, maybe his wife can find evidence of Snyder’s growth and evolution. I can’t."

I moved to Florida and lost money on selling them for 6 years in a row. The way the team was playing and the way its affairs were being run, it just wasn't worth keeping them merely for sentimental reasons. You should do the same, Danny boy.

The bigger issue here is what Snyder is choosing to do with his time and his priorities. Suing a local paper does not make the Redskins a better team.

Maybe he should sit down with the Rooney's or the people who run the Packers while down in Dallas to see how a real, professional successful NFL team is run.

The Packers and Steelers do everything the opposite of the Redskins, and that is why they will be on tv 6:39pm Sunday.

Doesn't libel involve printing something that isn't accurate? I looked at the offending story. It seemed to me that it involved statements that were either accurate or not -- bring the documentation or not. There was a shortage of opinions, just statements of what were said to be facts. So just bring the documentation, if it exists, and leave it at that. The guy might wish he hadn't done things but having someone report what he has done probably isn't libel.

The interesting point that gets missed is that what Tanya Snyder ACTUALLY said is that The Owner has "surrounded himself with better people." Now this is what I'm talking about. If Snyder moves the team to LA, we keep the history and, for what it's worth, the team name, and we get to start over with a fully functional franchise. Danny gets to live it up with Tom Cruise in Hollywood. The NFL would never allow the DC to lie fallow for a couple of years -- so they negotiate a deal sending the franchise to LA the same year a new franchise starts up here in DC. We know Danny knows how to use the Lear jet, so get flying, baby...

Dream world? He really seems bothered by the criticism Don't let up, my friends.

I just don't understand how Daniel Snyder managed to make the leap to pulling his wife's history with breast cancer into this. It is not mentioned in the original article. from that article in the City Paper:

"His wife, Tanya Snyder, is out selling the transformation, too. Last week she went on local TV to tell an interviewer that he is now surrounded by “better people,” and that he’s “grown and he’s evolved.”

Well, maybe his wife can find evidence of Snyder’s growth and evolution."

I think that is all she is mentioned in that article...if he was so upset at this "harsh" treatment of his wife, as soon as it is published you do something not 2 or 3 months later. Plus, what is so bad about those few sentences??

I read the article on the City Paper website last night and came away with the impression it presented factual information with humor - much like Dave Barry did in his 2010 year in review article. Is everyone mentioned in that article going to sue Dave? How about the humorous Giants Fan article Gene W. just wrote in the Post. Is Snyder going to sue him too? Snyder needs to check his ego at the door and grow up. But there is no chance of that in this lifetime.

Danny wants an apology because his feelings were hurt(and possibly those of his wife)? Fine, perhaps he should get one.

But on what planet do hurt feelings become slander and defamation? The facts in the CP story are undisputed, and that's the only thing that matters in a court of law. The CP put a negative spin on facts that Snyder puts a positive spin on. That's not slander, that's publicity.

The legal complaint was not a real lawsuit. It was a press release disquised as a lawsuit. And not a very good press release at that.

Why doesn't the Post do a fact check on the Citypaper article? Are these truths or lies they published?

Posted by: InTheMiddle | February 4, 2011 3:23 PM | Report abuse

Why would Dan and Dave be so “dismissive” of Tanya and her great work as the NFL
spokeswoman for Breast Cancer Awareness by putting her in the middle of a lawsuit that has nothing to do with her? When Tanya’s quote, from a tv interview, stated that Dan is hanging with “better people” and he has “evolved” as a person was the only positive statement about Dan Snyder in the entire article?

What was more demeaning to Tanya was Tony Wiley’s statement on CBS radio
that any monetary award would “not benefit the Redskins or Dan Snyder.. it would go towards charity to benefit the Homeless” Which is a noble cause, but you’d think Dan would be more “evolved” to have Tony state that any monetary award would go to Tanya’s NFL Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.

Posted by: elle77 | February 4, 2011 3:23 PM | Report abuse

He was also interviewed on the Jime Rome show about an hour ago and although I was glad that Rome was aware of the lawsuit and asked him about it, it gave the Dwarf a chance to look good by him twisting things in his favor. I really thought he couldn’t stoop any lower by bringing the Wiesenthal Center into it, but he did by using his wife’s breast cancer to make him look better - absolutely revolting. Unfortunately, listeners outside of Washington were more likely to sympathize with him than to realize how repulsive he is.

Would expect to see an apology from the reporter (who was telling the truth, by the way) about the same time we can expect to see Dan telling the truth about his own role in running a once proud NFL franchise into the ground. What a greasy little bastard!

He was also on the Jim Rome show from Texas, and although I was glad to see Rome was aware of the lawsuit and asked about it, the interview unfortunately gave the Dwarf a chance to look good by him twisting things in his favor. Yesterday, I thought he couldn’t stoop any lower by bringing the Wiesenthal Center into it, but then today he uses his wife’s breast cancer to make him look better - absolutely revolting.

Come on Dan have the guts to stand up for your own decision and don't blame Tony or your lawyer about why you are attacking the City Paper

The article detailed the decisions you made about football. Don't diminish the importance of Breast cancer awareness or antisemitism by suggesting the article was about something besides your decisions about football.

Why don't you address the charges in the article--you are 46 years old owner with the emotions of a 17 year old.

Ask Ted for some advice on how to handle the media and get some help.

Paragraph 29 is the most interesting in its claim for damages based on "hurt feelings."

The visual images of Kim Jong Il in Team America or the Big Lebowski in a wheel chair ("strong men also cry") come to mind.

I agree with Snyder that McKenna and the paper should have retracted the stuff insinuating Snyder is a criminal, and some of the other stuff was over the top too. A retraction and apology would have been the ideal scenario. But I still fail to see how suing will solve anything.

Dan, you apparently learned very little when you ran your P.R. company. What you did was give this festering pile of an underground newspaper the best publicity that they could never in a million years afford to buy! So what if this writer wrote an article filed with half-truths, some truths, and no-truths? That's what the stocking-capped, soul-patched typers-of-drivel at these crap publications do in order to get attention. You just drove thousands of people to seek out the article in question, who would have never heard of it, nor cared. How about spending your capital on repairing your rightly-deserved tarnished image of grossly mismanaging one of the most beloved sports franchises and not on giving free publicity to the underground community rag that 12 people read each week?! You may currently own the Redskins franchise, but you are merely the current "occupant," and the Redskins are MUCH bigger than one, Daniel Snyder! Grow up! Negative publicity, even outright attacks, from these losers is part of the territory. Embrace it, shrug it off, and fuhgeddaboutit! Now .. FIX THE REDSKINS! Or better yet, LET THE PROFESSIONALS fix the Redskins!!

"You can't make fun of someone's wife and her effort for breast cancer awareness as national spokesperson for the National Football League as a breast cancer survivor. It's just wrong."

Except for one thing: the article did NOT make fun of you wife. It QUOTED her. Here's what it said: "His wife, Tanya Snyder, is out selling the transformation, too. Last week she went on local TV to tell an interviewer that he is now surrounded by “better people,” and that he’s “grown and he’s evolved." Well, maybe his wife can find evidence of Snyder’s growth and evolution. I can’t."

Can you tell where he made fun of his wife in that paragraph? Neither can I. Like the charges of anti-semitism, it's imaginary.

Little Danny is a miserable little toad.

Washington Redskins Countersuit: Paragraph 29.
As a direct and proximate result of the above-described conduct by Defendants (Dan Snyder), Redskin's fans have suffered general and special damages including damage to our reputation and standing in the football community, shame, mortification, hurt feelings, emabrrassment, humiliation, damage to peace of mind, emotional distress, and injury to our sportsmanship. Although the full nature, extent, and amount of these damages are currently unknown, this Complaint can be remedied with the sale for the Redskins to anyone other than Daniel M. Snyder, a 13-3 record next season and another Lombardi Trophy.

Thank You - Redskin's Fans Everywhere!

I somehow (like some others) do not understand Snyder's comments as they relate to his wife. I did not see any inferred or applied "going after her". I even re-read the article, and used search tools to see if there was an earlier version, or some slander got inserted later within the article that I missed.

I think the article pissed off "The Danny", and triggered his Napoleon complex, so he felt that it was necessary to "do something". According to the article and the experience of long suffering Redskins fans, whenever "The Danny" decides he must "do something", it is all messed up.

Having read the November piece in the Washington City Paper, it seems to me Synder has no basis claiming that McKenna attacked his wife. (Of course, there was no mention of his wife and cancer there, either.) Donovan and Wyllie also made these spurious claims to Arrington. It sounds like they are all saying it, and believing each other.

Reminds me of the Bush administration and WMD's in Iraq: the officials told each other so often that after a while, it's truth to them. Of course, after the invasion, none were to be found.

For Synder, the scenario would be like going to court and still make these claims, and have them shot down in a minute and half by the opposing lawyer....unless his own lawyers are the first to stop him. (Wish there were somebody there to play this role with the WMD's.)

Not saying this lawsuit is even near the same scale of human tragedy as the invasion of a country, but the phenomenon is the same: believing in your own propaganda, and acting on that belief.

When Riggins called Snyder out for having a 'dark heart', seemed like most of the comments I saw thought Riggins was out of line.

But now Danny is using his wife's cancer (she was briefly mentioned in a mild way) and crying racism?

That is pretty dark stuff.

What is even sadder, Snyder has probably done a lot of good in ways that get little notice. But as a colleague once told me a few decades ago ... it takes just 1 aww shti to wipe out 100 atta boys.

This has probably been answered elsewhere, but I'm wondering:

Is there any recourse for a city that wants to force its owner out? Can any appeal be made to the NFL that an owner's actions are not only destroying a team, but damaging the institution of pro football in some way?

Has there ever been an owner more completed hated (and more completely hateful) than Snyder?

lingering_lead "To be fair, it was a hack piece written by a hackish author. Very petty (guest houses, helicopters, market segments, etc...) and certainly misleading. Accuses him of not "thinking through the simple economics of pro football," yet he runs the highest grossing franchise in the NFL.

The guy is a columnist. This was an opinion piece. And in fairness, I see actual proof of every single claim he made. Up to and including the "slamming/forgery" charges, for which the links to that article are readily available.

But your "economics of football" argument falls flat on its face. When will skins fans learn that "top grossing" is YOUR fault, not Snyder's genius. He keeps sending your fanbase through the ringer, charging you for things that NO OTHER FANBASE pays for, and the Skins fans just keep shelling out the cash.

What the authro meant by "economics of football" was NOT profit, but throwing away good money after bad time and time and time again on pricey free agents who continue to ruin this team. Do I need to break out a list? Archuleta, Sanders, Smith, Haynesworth, etc etc etc etc (add 40 more etcs to this list).

The author isn't talking about PROFIT. You suckers are the reason he's so successful business-wise. He is talking about the economics of managing a team under a salary cap, which virtually every single team in the NFL except for the Redskins seems to have had more success with in the last decade plus. You completely missed the point

Sure, it's true that if the Redskins were winning, all of Snyder's misbehavior would be swept under the rug. Jack Kent Cooke was hardly Mother Teresa, after all.

However, the very same personality traits that cause Snyder to act like a jacka** are the ones that ensure the Redskins will never will a Super Bowl so long as he owns them. Failure is baked into the cake, so to speak.

Back in 1999, after the Howie Milstein debacle, I remember being relieved that the new owner was a true Redskins fan. Maybe we would have been better off with Howie, after all...

No reasonable person would construe this article as having said anything mean or bad about his wife at all. To the extent Snyder claims otherwise, HE IS A DIRTY SUB-HUMAN LIAR! True... and what that tells me is the editor read it and determined it was somewhat satirical.

I'd imagine it's tough to dislodge an NFL owner merely by not buying tickets or merch. The NFL pools merchandise profits and shares them equally. So, Snyder will still see merch revenue whether or not you buy stuff with the logo on it. Also, a huge percentage of NFL revenues are based on the television contracts, and those are shared equally, as well.

Snyder would take a huge hit if the stadium was empty, obviously, but he'd still have tremendous revenue coming in. How do you think teams like the Lions and Cardinals stay in business year after year?

As the son of a breast cancer survivor, I couldn't be more appalled with Little Danny. I have Jewish friends that feel the same. This guy needs some SERIOUS therapy and more importantly, people around him that don't encourage this heinous type of behavior.

1. NO ONE attacked his wife or discussed her breast cancer awareness efforts.

2. That drawing is in NO way offensive to Jewish people.

I'm ALL about people making money and living the American dream. I love it. There are few examples through out history where very powerful and rich men have set a very bad example. He is absolutely one of them. The fact that the Snyder name is associated to my beloved Redskins is something that pains me every single day.
Intelligent and resourceful communities gather, unite and establish procedures to peacefully change the situations they are not content with. It is absolutely time all Washingtonians and Redskins fans alike, put in legal paperwork, set up funds, write letters to the NFL commissioner and do everything in anything in their power to rid The Washington Redskins of daniel snyder. This team belongs to no one man, it belongs to the community and the fans that support it. Let's take action.

But for goodness sake, Dan Snyder might be a tough bastard even rotten at times but don't tell me the Squire wasn't? Anyhow, he certainly isn't sub-human. Gene wrote a funny satire though....

I listened to the ESPN980 bit with Snyder. It would have been nice if either John Thompson or Doc Walker asked a pertinent question of Snyder. Like, what part of the CP story is lies? Where did the writer insult your wife? How is the devil horn drawing anti-Semetic? Where did the writer call you a criminal? Instead we got pap, probably b/c Doc and Thompson are on Snyder's payroll since Snyder owns the station. Maybe somebody at the Post will have enough balls to ask these obvious questions.

I know it's fashionable to bash Snyder, but I'm with him on this one. Responsibility in media has been going out the window ever since Fox News first aired, and there's got to be a limit. Drawing the Satan picture and all that was just juvenile and unprofessional for a publication that wants to be legitimate. Just because nobody likes Snyder is no reason to forget about professionalism.

And seriously, in the end, I'll still take an owner willing to overpay Haynesworth instead of an owner who refuses to pay Mussina. One thing you can say for Dano, at least he isn't cheap. Lots of owners are. Might be an unpopular opinion and I don't think they guy's a saint, but you gotta admit we could do worse.

Playing the cancer card is lower than low. The interview might have gone more in his favor if he had quit while he was (possibly) ahead. Instead, he reverted to the very cheap and shameless tactic of bringing up his wife's breast cancer which was not even mentioned in the City Paper article. We all sympathize with his wife over her battle with this disease which has touched so many of us. Now we sympathize even more because she is married to such a low-life.

Let's assume for a minute that the article in question had one or two items that are inaccurate / based upon specious reporting.

Even *if* that is the case, is Snyder making the argument in court that removing one or two elements of this wholly damning article would change the perception of anyone who read it? Is he sufficiently deluded to believe that people's opinion of him would be favorable if not for one or two items amongst a litany of valid, unchallenged idiocies?

The original City Paper article uses the word "cancer" twice, both in the same paragraph (which appears below). No mention of Danny-Boy's wife in that paragraph, yet he claims this is where the article goes too far. Well, I agree that only a petty lowlife would use someone's cancer as an inappropriate media gambit, but it was Baby Danny that brought it up, not the City Paper. Way to use your spouse's life-threatening illness as an opportunistic sympathy ploy.

"Cancer" excerpt from the City Paper:

Market Segments: How Snyder viewed cancer patients and diabetics during his marketing days. In a 2000 interview for a PBS show called CEO Exchange, Snyder told host Jeff Greenfield that his business depended on coming up with “$5 million niches” that he could sell goods and services to. Asked for examples of his methodology, Snyder said, “We were looking at trend lines. We saw that the aging baby boomer demographics were coming on strong. That meant there’s going to be a lot more diabetic patients, a lot more cancer patients, etc. How do we capture those market segments?”

And the only mention of cancer in the original article was when Danny referred to it as a 'market segment". How does the wife feel about those chosen words, D-boy? You apologize to her for that yet?

Just because he is making stuff up about insulting his wife and antisemitic drawings does not make it so....oh wait because he has a lot of money he gets to invent whatever truth he wants and then bully people into pretending it's true.

My dad taught me how to pronounce Sonny Jurgensen's name and the words to "Hail to the Redskins" when I was just a tiny girl. He passed away in '93. Though I still miss him, I'm certainly glad he's not here to witness what Little Danny Boy has done to his favorite team.

How about the guy who used to dance when the Redskins made a touchdown. Dannyboy wanted his poster removed, and demanded that the camera's stop showing him dance.
How about the dancing band members, Dannyboy demanded the "spontaneous" dancing continue...(blackface anyone?)
How about Dannyboy wanting to prevent the band members from sitting together and having to purchase tickets off of the waiting list
Or about the man who used to open the door for the bigwigs on the lower level. When he saw Dannyboy coming, he would "conveniently" turn his back.
I didn't read anything in that WCP article that wasn't true, and boy oh boy, I could add to it.
Wish he would hurry up and sell. The Redskins will never win as long as he owns the team.

I was feeling a little sympathy for The danny after reading McKenna's article, it was after all written from a fairly slanted viewpoint. Then The danny came up with,

"You can't make fun of someone's wife and her effort for breast cancer awareness as national spokesperson for the National Football League as a breast cancer survivor. It's just wrong."

I just reread McKenna's entire article. Not one mention of "breast cancer" or "fundraising".

Now after hearing The danny exploit his wife's breast cancer purely for the empathy factor, I think I'm going to be sick. Couple this with the "anti-semitic" pandering his lawyers are claiming, I think I finally see what kind of human being The danny is.

I wouldn't go to a 'Skins game now if The danny comped me "Dream Seats", sent his chopper to pick me up, promised to drop me off at mid-field, AND gave me a voucher for all the Men's room beer I could drink.

Posted by: rcupps | February 4, 2011 6:12 PM | Report abuse

Holding up his wife's breast cancer might evoke sympathy but after that claim that the horns were anti-semitic and trotting out a rabbi to complain about it, Dan has zero zero zero credibility and even less integrity.

Do not give this little man anymore of your money! That's the only way something will change. Don't fall for the 9-7 barely-squeaking-into-the-playoff-years either. It's not worth the investment as long as this DBagger owns the team. I've been boycotting for 3 years now and will continue to as long as danny boy owns the team. I want my beloved Redskins back!!!!

If there is a lie in the article, why doesn't Danny literally point them out, instead of talking in rhetoric.

He is going to waste soooo much money on this....wait, what does he care? It's not like he's ever worried about that in the past.

"Even if he does any homework, I don't know him"

I think he said, "He never does any homework."

Nice of Snyder not to have any specific points other than being called a criminal and making fun of his wife. The first looks like it was mispenned, but the second seems bogus.

Danny-do you realize that the only person who has ever said anything "un-negative" was Joe Gibbs? You could not buy a friend. You sued a friend's widow, saying her husband's estate was on the hook for 4 more years of your Bravo Sierra "product"-season tickets that you resold anyway and wanted to double dip. Don't fuel the stereotype. Kharma has just showed you the tip of the iceberg. Oh, yeah...you don't believe in kharma. Enjoy.

At this point there are over 370 comments on this page. Multiply that by about 50,000 and you still probably don't reach the number representing how many people who now know that Danny's a world class punk. You have to ask, is he paying his PR guy to tell him. "Yeah MR Snyder, tell the guy on the Post that if The City Paper just apologizes for something that they didn't even say....????? , or is he ignoring someone with some sense telling him "no,no,no...don't say that??? In Webster's dictionary, under "Napoleonic complex" there's a picture of Dan Snyder.

Raise the drink and food prices, Dan, and take a beginner's course in English at the local Community College, since you never went to a real college.

Danny's lawyers must have really had a chuckle writing this complaint and trying to keep a straight face. This case will get tossed on Summary Judgment without even a wimper of protest. The fact that he has resorted to using the "anti-semitism" card is disgusting and idiotic. It demeans the actual cases of antisemitism that real people deal with every day. And I don't know how many times I have heard him refer to his wife the "breast cancer survivor." What is THAT about? Using your poor ailing wife as a prop??? The complaint boils down to "they were mean to me. make them stop." There is no actionable example of defamation whatsoever. But I guess this little whining child knows no limits to his peevish whining behavior.

I agree with Snyder on this. With a free press comes responsibility, accountability. It's not a right to slander people. If you were the subject, most if not all of you would do the same as Snyder. I would probably offer to teach the writer how to do his research and be a journalist instead of a blogger - big difference.

Dear Dan,
You are a public figure, so you should expect being a target. Owning an NFL franchise - magnifies that ten fold. Screwing it up beyond repair - thousand fold increase. And you made your fortune in communications? You almost personify "schmuck"....except that would be insulting to schmucks. Drop the lawsuit before a judge calls you an idiot (in Latin of course), and start working on building a winning NFL franchise. Go call the Rooney family for advice in that area......on the other hand, keep doing what you're doing. Go Ravens!

I do feel for his wife, and appreciate the fact that she is a breast cancer survivor.

But, Danny boy's antics are way over the top. He is a BULLY. And, has no appetite for critism.

I read the article that Snyder is upset about and I did not see anything that sounded libelous or defamatory -- of course if it goes to trial, the jury will decide........what I do remember from reading the article though is that it did portray Snyder as a dumb bell who needs to have his way and is always looking for a new way to squeeze more bucks out of the Redskin fans -- and to that I say, stop wasting mega $ on players who can't be counted on to be a team player, like Haynesworth.......and don't give BIG extensions to players and then have your coach dump him, a la McNabb! Such a player personnel screw up by owner and coach is a bad sign for this team!

Well, he tried the antisemitism ("I'm Jewish, and he made fun of me. That's antisemitism!!!") angle, and that didn't work. So now he's working the cancer ("My wife had cancer, and he made fun of me. That's pro-cancer!!!) angle. Once that doesn't work, he'll no doubt try the "I can't help being an incompetent a$$ with a Napoleonic complex. How dare they make fun of my medical condition?" angle.

Of course, had he had an ounce of intelligence or self-awareness, he would have just let the article remain in the obscurity of a local "free weekly" where it was born. Right may be right, and wrong may be wrong, but stupid is always stupid.

Please note the shifting explanations--a sign that there's something disingenuous going on. He's mad and wants revenge on them, but does he have anything in his favor legally? Doesn't look like it. He does have deep pockets, and that's pretty much what he's threatening--to litigate until City Paper can't afford to litigate any more.

For those who are saying they are with Mr. Snyder: please read through his complaints and then look for evidence of those complaints in the article. The article NEVER calls him a criminal. The article NEVER mocks his wife's illness or her work on its behalf. It DOES note that she was out there touting Dan being a changed man. McKenna simply said that he saw no evidence of that change. True, he was rebutting what Mrs. Snyder said, but it didn't seem to be done in a disrespectful way. .

As a survivor, Mrs. Snyder deserves compassion and as an activist for raising awareness about breast cancer, she deserves praise. But is she then off limits if she makes public statements about her husband or the way he runs the team?

I don't like the juvenile illustration that went with the article, but it's hard to know what the intent was.

I just wonder if the sentence or two about Mrs. Snyder and the childish illustration were not part of the article, whether we'd be hearing about some other aspect of the article--it seems we're being asked to focus on whatever might draw our sympathy to Mr. Snyder. The "lies" accusation got a lot of pushback in the press, and a lot of folks Jewish and non-Jewish said they didn't buy into the anti-Semitic intent of the illustration, so we've moved down the line to a more sympathetic claim.

But in the end, I think it boils down to he's mad and he wants revenge.

I thought you were a smart man, I mean how many guys can buy a pro Team not many. Now you are a prime example that money don't mean that you are smart. The City Paper did a great job in revealing somethings about you I didn't know, however you have messed up the one thing in this region that bring everybody together. I don't care if you are black, white,Christian,Muslims,Jewish, rich, or poor we all love our football team and you have done you best to destroy it. Now if you really care about this region and I believe you do. I'm a Washington resident, but not a Redskin fan (nothing to do with Snyder). I have to say, after reading the City Paper article in full, even as a non-fan, I find Snyder's lawsuit and public reaction borderline infuriating. As commenters above have noted, the article makes no (zero!) mention of breast cancer, Tanya Snyder's struggle with the disease or her awareness campaign. She is mentioned exactly once to quote her observation of Daniel Snyder's "evolution".

Snyder and his flunkies are making a calculated decision to attack the story, the author, and the paper in the hopes that more fans hear Snyder's criticisms and aren't curious enough to read the fricking article.

Snyder is not alone in this insulting tactic. Too often I've seen people stand in front of a camera, blatantly lie to the public's face, and hope that for most people, there is no desire to read or research any further. It's insulting and infuriating.

I really hope Redskins fans mean what they say here about hitting Snyder in his wallet. I would love to see Snyder forced to sell the team in defeat; he should be ashamed of himself and Redskins fans deserve better.

I really hope Redskins fans mean what they say here about hitting Snyder in his wallet. I would love to see Snyder forced to sell the team in defeat; he should be ashamed of himself and Redskins fans deserve better.

When is Danny going to say he is sorry for the joke he turned the Deadskins into?

And the name REDSKINS isn't offensive Danny?

All you fool fans who keep throwing your money at this moron are the reason he still has the smirk on his face that needs to be forceable removed.

He gets your money and laughs in your face.

Here is an idea:
Take the illustration -- the one showing Snyder as a devil -- print it on stickers and silk screen it on T-shirts.

Sell them for $10. Donate the profits to the Simon Wiesenthal Center

Put the stickers all over DC and wear the shirts to any Snyder-backed event.

This guy used to run a communications & marketing firm?

So here I sit, watching other people's teams play in the Super Bowl while my beloved Redskins are famousnot for their football but for litigation filed by their owner four days ago.

I will never not root for the Redskins, but that does not prevent me from feeling despair that they will ever reach this stage while being perennially hamstrung by their owner. There's no use calling the man names. He is just the enemy of the franchise he owns and, ironically, loves.

Assuming that Atalaya doesn't settle, this will eventually get to a jury. However, I don't see that happening because, by settling, Atalaya would be undermining the credibility of the Paper. Moreover, I find it hard to believe that Snyder would engender much sympathy from a jury because the so-called offending article simply isn't blatant enough to raise anyone's ire except Dan's. Like it or not, hurt feelings don't translate into defamation awards. The best he can hope for is nominal damages (i.e. one dollar).

I think the most ineffective way to garner an apology is to sue a FREE PAPER for $2 million. But hey, next time I feel the need for an apology I'll follow Danny Boy's advice and SUE SUE SUE. Go home and chop down some more federally protected trees

the media is out of control.they said he forged signatures and documents, they should have to prove that.you cant just say anything you want

Posted by: bleedy1

They didn't say anything they want. It should be fairly easy for WCP to prove their point regarding the forged names comment. All they have to do is subpoena former Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth. Or reference the following articles:

http://www.myfloridalegal.com/newsrel.nsf/newsreleases/939A11BD0EA5CAB485256A390047D9C9

http://www.sptimes.com/News/071200/Business/Slamming_fine_for_Ver.shtml

Bernard Ebbers probably didn't cook the mci worldcom accounting books himself, but he was ultimately responsible. Dan Snyder probably didn't forge the names himself, but he is ultimately responsible. They (Snyder Comms.) settled out of court. While that isn't guilt it could be construed as suspicious. In other words if they could prove their innocence why didn't they? Mr. Snyder doesn't seem to have an issue paying highly paid lawyers.

I will agree with you that in many cases the media is out of control, but not in this case. Several people, including myself, have researched and verified the WCP article. It is presented in a derogatory fashion, but at this point nothing has been found to be untrue.

Signed,
A former Washington Redskins fan

p.s. It's good to see some other people are not going to condone and continue to contribute to Snyder's behavior. I felt that if I purchased another Redskins item the message I would be sending is suing fans, banning signs at the stadium, and suing a little newspaper that didn't print anything that was untrue, is okay with me. Well, it isn't okay with me and I'm doing something about it. Oh he'll have the money to continue his antics, but he's not getting it from me anymore.

Snyder should be apologizing to Washingtonians for holding our team hostage over the last 10 or so years.

While the use of devil horns to portray Jews has been used by anti-semites throughout history, does the fact that Dan Synder is Jewish in itself to make the drawing upon his photo anti-semetic. If this was included in a group picture with say other NFL owners and all were portrayed with horns, it would clearly not be viewed as anti-semtic. No one would claim that a similar picture of Jerry Jones or the late George Steinbrenner drawn with horns is anti-semitic. The drawing is clearkly directed at Synder as an individual It is not directed at Jews. Synder's use of the abnti-semitism card is an attempt to portray him as a victim. Shame on him. He ain't no mensch.
