Daniels, Wynn acknowledge need for leader

With the announcement that Washington Redskins coach Jim Zorn was fired early this morning upon the team's return from San Diego, several veteran players this afternoon voiced strong opinions about the need for more discipline in a franchise that lacked it within the locker room this season.

Though veteran defensive ends Phillip Daniels and Renaldo Wynn praised Zorn as a person and coach - they said much of the responsibility for the 4-12 season falls on the players - both voiced the opinion that the Redskins lacked a leader who demanded accountability from everyone in the locker room.

Daniels acknowledged that some players were not always "doing the right things," and pointed to instances of individuals missing practices, showing up late to meetings and sneaking out after curfew.

"We're going to need someone to come in here and let these guys know they're not going to get away with anything," Daniels said. "They're going to be real strict and make sure these guys do the right things. And us as leaders, we probably let some things slip this year that we shouldn't and we've got to stand up a little bit better, too, and say we're not going to accept that. This is our team and we got to win. But I do think somebody has go to come in here and be hands on and say, 'This is not going to happen, not on my watch,' and punish the guys for not doing the right things. That's what you've got to do. If we're going to win, it's going to have to be everybody doing all the right things at the right time."

The most damning comments came from special teams captain Rock Cartwright, who said that there was inconsistency in how certain players were treated compared to the rest of the roster.

"Discipline is one of the main things you've got to have in an organization. And it starts at the top and goes all the way down," Cartwright said. "We did lack some discipline on this team a little bit and that's why, I think, the record was what it was."

In his eight seasons in Washington, Cartwright has gone through three coaches already. The level of discipline, he said, was different under Joe Gibbs than it was under Zorn. He wouldn't name any names, but Cartwright said to the chagrin of many in the locker room, some players received preferential treatment around Redskins Park.

"Just some things that some guys got away with that some other guys - we have 'rules guys' and we have 'guideline guys,'" Cartwright said. "Rules guys have to stick to the rules. Guideline guys, you go by your own guidelines and do what you want to do. When you got a team sport, everybody has to be rules guys and be on the same page."

Cartwright said players also noticed that some guys had a direct line with team management and bypassed Zorn when they had concerns.

"When you've got guys that feel like they have that power, then of course that's a bad apple in the bunch," Cartwright said.

Wynn also acknowledged the problem existed and said he was concerned about how younger players in the locker room were learning from negative influences around them. Wynn said he told some of the younger players that he wished "they didn't have to see some of the things that they've seen and experienced some of the things that they've experienced, because in this league, 'Not For Long,' as we know the cliché always says, it can have a bad effect on players where it can be a bad influence on them."

Wynn, like Cartwright and Daniels, also said he believed that the head coach needed to have the final word within the locker room - something that didn't happen this season in Washington.

"Any time you have a head coach he needs to be the head coach," he said. "Everybody needs to buy into that and it doesn't need to be coming from this person or that person. If the head coach says it, it should stop there."

But its a much better feeling then if we were to have a GM who says things like "I don't like to use high draft picks on O-linemen" and "I gave you a playoff caliber team" or "Derrrrrrr"

If it is a capless year and we dump high priced contracts like CP what is the impact on us if/when cap returns in 2011?

Not sure why coaches need to fill out player evaluation reports. Allen should just have rock in his office for 30 mins, let him spill the beans and be done with it.

I found the most amusing part to be when BA basically pointed out Reid as dummy fishing for him to say Shanahan will be the next coach.

Reid-tard: "Does the next coach have to have super bowl experience"

BA: "Why don't you just ask if the next head coach needs to have a certain set of initials"?

If it’s Shanny, than he has to establish that he is THE MAN from day one, and if you don’t buy in to what he is preaching, then you are benched or gone. Zorn never established that with this team, although he may not have been able to the way that the whole org was run. This was one of my problems with Zorn and is one of the reasons I want Russ Grimm to be the coach. If Grimm tells you that you got benched and you lip off to him or the media about it, you are likely to find his foot up your butt as he sends you home without pay. Just never saw Zorn as being the guy who did that. Even if he did, Vinny or Danny would have undermined his decisions anyway. Look at what Beklicheat did when some of his stars were late to practice in a blizzard; he sent Randy Moss home for cripes sake. You think Zorn would have been allowed to send Portis home if he was late? Hopefully Shanny won’t take ANY lip from these guys, and teach them how to keep stuff in house…..

I don't claim to be knowledgeable but the hit would occur in 2010.

The beauty of an uncapped year would allow them to purge the roster of bad contracts.

The downside would be that anyone with less the 6 years in the league would be a RFA, which means that the UFA pool would mostly consist of 30 year olds

Yeah I got that impression also. Admittedly I do not know that much about Allen now, but from hearing how savvy he is with the media and what smooth talker he is, I would think he would try to start with a clean slate with the WP, and not continue any ill relations.

Although maybe he did, but Reid-tard already rubbed him the wrong way in the 3 weeks he's been here.

Don't get why people are beating up on Cartwright here - unless they are Portis slurpers and don't like hearing how his "special relationship" with management affected the team as a whole.

And considering Daniels is seconding this stuff, seems pretty hard to deny that this sort of thing was a real problem for the team. Unless you think Daniels is also upset because he didn't get to be a featured RB, either.

Stumped,
Joe Gibbs - up and comer
so your point is what?

My point is that Snyder has taken those risks before and, yes, he's also brought in some big name coaches, all with mixed results (including Saint Joe). I believe he is learning from those mistakes. The Allen/Cerrato action is evidence.

We need a very good head coach, a very good coaching staff and a very good OL and a very good QB. Put those pieces together and suddenly they are all better than very good.

My point?...now is not the time to roll the dice.

Not if Bruce Allen has a brain in his head. He should make Wynn an assistant coach, keep Daniels and Rock.

Teams need locker room leaders, who have the guts to speak back to management, do what's right and call out those who do NOT do what is good for the team.

Idiots like Cerrato thought losing a slew of veteran leaders--Washington, Thrash, Springs, etc--wouldn't have a big effect on the team. He was wrong.

Posted by: TheCork | January 4, 2010 2:50 PM | Report abuse

If the veterans on the team didn't speak up before, then shut the hell up now. Rock has been talking all season why didn't he say anything before. Daniels powerlifts the whole weight room why didn't he demand accountability. If there was a double standard as far as player treatment, why didn't the players get together and confront the individual. Maybe then Zorn would have grew a pair knowing the the teams "veterans" had his back. Rookie coach with no experience needs guys in the locker enforcing team rules.

I agree that Rock is probably talking about Portis in terms of "special treatment". Portis was famous for not taking preseason seriously (except when his contract was on the line), not showing up at practice, talking out of school, etc.

However this is probably true of most of Danny's big-dollar signings... Randle El has inexplicably great treatment from coaches including getting lots of touches at punt return and receiver, meanwhile his numbers suck.

It took forever to get rid of Jon Jansen even though his last 3-4 years as a Redskin were pretty poor. Obviously the old-time offensive linemen had a lot of sway with management, which I think is part of why we haven't picked up any new O-linemen, the old-timers kept their jobs regardless of performance.

Jason Taylor was obviously plugged into upper management until he finally got thrown under the bus.

It is almost impossible to create a team where two guys are side by side doing the same job and one is making 10x the other. You get guys like Cartwright and Betts who got passed over again and again for big names who didn't perform, it destroys their morale.

Meanwhile the new, young and hungry guys like Mason, Kelly and Thomas are obviously down in the trenches doing their best and trying to get noticed while the coaches ignore them in favor of the prima donnas. One of the best things that happened to the Skins this year was that the starters got hurt so everyone could see how good the 2nd and 3rd string players are.

The Skins have a dysfunctional organization where the best players don't play and the formerly good players keep their jobs because of status. They need a meritocracy like winning NFL teams where every player fights for his job every day.

The NFL merry-go-round continues. Didn't this guy Shanahan get fired by Denver? Why was he fired? Because he didn't produce; he didn't win. So now he triples his previous contract and will try again in DC. Boy...what a life!!
I trust that Allen will request ALL coaches to resign, and will allow the next Head Coach to bring in his own staff. If ANY of them are retained before the next Coach is hired, then we'll know that NOTHING has changed.

These guys are correct.

And things WILL get fixed.

Nobody is going back door on Shanahan to Snyder to complain about how they are being treated.

That is over.

Portis for one spent all of last week complimenting Mike Shanahan for a reason.

He knows his days of 'running' things around Redskins Park are over.

Shanahan replaces running backs like a new mother uses baby wipes.

If other players don't want to sign on to the program they will be gone.

As Jimmy Johnson said 'If I can lose with you I can lose without you'.

Snyder seems to hate the heart and soul guys like Bmitch and Rock. I think Snyder secretly wishes he was THE tough heart and soul guy of the Skins. Ain't happening but at least the little man can fire these guys. Why did Rock lose the running back job? Snyder is a little Blew boy and is a p-r-i-c-k and ALWAYS will be.
