Dawn of the Draft Day

Finally, it has arrived. Who knows for sure what the evening will bring? We'll keep following the buzz and see where it takes us. Mark Maske is on the scene at Radio City in New York. The only real certainty this moment is that he'll be BHGO as long as a ready supply of snacks is at hand. The speculation from last night into this morning concerns whether the Rams will end up with Mark Sanchez -- I believe you're familiar with his work -- and trade Marc Bulger to the New York Jets.

One thing is certain, for every action, there seems to be an equal reaction, so keep an eye on The League, this here blog, our draft tracker, and the RedskinsInsider twitter feed. Of course, we'll also shoot out a mobile alert (certainly after that 13th pick, if it goes to the maroon and black). Sign up by texting "Skins" to 98999 if, you know, you prefer to go out this evening.

In the meantime, I'm sure you'll entertain yourselves up here. For openers, you could discuss the possible effects on the Redskins of staying with Jason Campbell as the starting QB.

Will the skins draft Derrick Dockery little brother out of Texas?

Posted by: dcinmd1 | April 25, 2009 10:51 AM | Report abuse

Campbell never throws the deep ball because he's never protected. Every post game, Zorn was on saying oh we had it dialed up but such and such happened.

Some of you fans are no better than danny. Already want boldin for picks and a mega salary. Isn't there a stud receiver available in free agency almost every single year???

Trade down and get more picks. Pick up a quality olinemen like Beatty (he seems pretty athletic but raw....definitely someone Buges can develop). Then pick up a quality d-end...It is deep in those two spots this year...

I agree, if we can't get one of the top 4 OT's, I hope we can trade down to get 2 picks, and use one of those on Britton, Beatty, or Mack Truck. D Dockery's a great addition but not enough to change the overall performance/reliability of the line (plus the guy he's replacing, Kendall, did a good job last year).

The future of our beloved Skins is in the competent and able hands of Vinny Cerrato... Geesh, soda just shot out of my nose...

Here's hoping that Sanchez goes to the Rams and Campbell stays with the Skins. On top of that a big ol' offensive lineman in the first round followed by a decent linebacker in the 3rd round would not be too much to ask. If those dreams come true, here's hoping that they snag a DL and a few more O-linemen later in the later rounds. Save the whales, Vinny!

Snyder is killing me!!! Those that act on impulse are 100x more likely to fail miserably. Snyder = impulse! Why in the world would anyone do what he is doing with the QB situation? Campbell is your qb and you NEED him to start at QB if you have any hope of getting into the postseason. Snyder has always had a win now attitude and the signing of Haynesworth vindicated that approach. So.....why flirt with handing the keys to an unproven rookie qb when the likelihood of Sanchez winning in his 1st season is strongly against him. The offensive schemes are alreay suspect enough and add in an inexperienced QB and you have a recipe for disaster. The coaching staff and personnel have to compliment each other!!! When you constantly switch out players at key positions and switch out offensive philosophies that don't match the personnel groupings you have, a team will never be able to build on cohession wich is the most important factor in sustaining wins.

Much as I want to see us get another top-flight DE and SAM LB, the defense was # 4 last year and definitely upgraded with Prince Albert, so I'd wait til next year on those items. The most radical and immediate change in the won/loss results - and I think almost a lock to get the Skins into the playoffs - would come from strengthening the O-line...

Give JC and the WR's 2-3 more seconds per pass play, make bigger holes for CP/LB, make it much more easy/predictable to get 1st downs and TD's in short yardage, wear down & demoralize opposing defenses, add 7+ points per game...

Ya know, that thought crossed my mind a few times Thunder, but I've been keeping it to myself as wishful thinking. Except what would we give up to get there? Our 3rd? I don't want us to use any of next year's picks (at least rounds 1-3), I want those for DE and LB next year, and possibly for QB if JC doesn't show he's extremely good behind a stout O-line (especially since next year's QB class is supposed to be strong & deep)...

Agreed, that's the whole point: JC is good enough... and we have much bigger holes to focus on first. Joe Montana would've looked like Heath Shuler behind the Skins O-line in the last 8 games last year.

This is NOT about hurting anyone's feelings.

The folks like yourself and Dan Snyder, who only seem to view these things in a vacuum, are short-sighted.

The issue is not merely whether you think Sanchez is an upgrade to JC17.

The issue is the overall project that you are building with your team. How the decision to dump JC17 and draft Sanchez works into the bigger picutre of cost (Picks you have to give up to get him), cap, development (of the overall team in this offense), other needs, etc.

If you don't like your living room. What do you do? Do you say "Let me replace my living room, just find the contractors to cut out my current living room and just install a whole new one".

What about the other parts of the house attached to that room?

What about living in a construction zone for the next X months while the work is done?

What about the hole in the roof that hasn't been plugged for a year?

Mike Williams, a 1st round bust with a bad back that hasn't played in 3 years... is a wish and nothing more, like Erasmus James. Hope is not a strategy.

How can we get a solid OT late in R1 or in R2, Mack Truck late in R1, and Cedrick Dockery? That's what I'd like to know...

The numbers suggest he is. By the way, Brad Johnson was at one time (in Minnesota) a legit All Pro QB candidate. By the time he got to Tampa he was actually fading a bit.

You don't 'need' an elite QB to get to the Super Bowl, or to win it. But they can sure help once you get there.

Yes, let's really run with that metaphor. Just what's gonna happen to our pitifully constructed walls (the O-line) when the big bad wolf (e.g., the Giants D-line) starts huffing & puffing?

Posted by: chasgiffen | April 25, 2009 11:54 AM | Report abuse

Samson151 , Brad Johnson posted an 11 TDs, 15 INTs, 75.7 QB rate season in his last season with the Skins, before he won a Super Bowl in Tampa.

But Johnson was not the Skins real problem, and neither is JC17. The FO here has gotten really good at knee-jerk reactions to the *symptoms* of the problem (a stagnant offense), without addressing the real cause of it.

Elite QBs are a wonderful commodity, but by definition they are rare. Super Bowls can be won by QBs who throw 17 TDs 15 INTs, and sports a an 80.1 QB rate. It happened last year. There are better ways to improve the offense than swapping QBs and coaches every couple of years.

Wow, they must really think Snyder is an idiot!

Posted by: Alan4 | April 25, 2009 12:12 PM | Report abuse

TWO THINGS:

1) Isn't it obvious that the QB Danny's angling towards is not Sanchez but Freeman? You'll see later today.

2) If you've played any kind of football (touch, flag, pee wee, high school, college, etc) you know that a qb with lots of time will always find a receiver and look pretty good in the process. Gibbs' focus on the o-line all those years made very mediocre qbs look great for us and brought us rings. We see that same thing today with Roeth in PBG and, gaasp, Brady in NE. This is such an obvious recipe for success; why aren't we pursuing it?

The Newark Star-Ledger "hears" that the Redskins are trying to move into the No. 2 spot to draft Mark Sanchez.

St. Louis would love this. Washington faces an "uphill climb," however, because owner Dan Snyder isn't willing to part with his 2010 first-round pick. The Skins might have to give their entire 2009 draft to get from No. 13 to 2.

I wonder how he feels every time he is forced to listen silently to Snidely Owl's King Ludwig the Crazy act. Next Snidely will build a castle that closely resembles Disney Land's / World's and Neuschwanstein. Or he will buy Neuschwanstein and the Redskins will play all their home games in a stadium he will build on the plain below.

If I were in the "war room" ... what a silly gratuitously martial name, should be the center ring under the big top ... at 13
with no OL, sans Curry, I would trade down. If I can't trade down I would go for Vontae.

I would indeed trade Captain Crash and the # 13 it took to get a couple of 2nd rounders and a 3rd and a lower 1st. I would use most of those picks on OL and linebacking with one pick reserved for Cooley's replacement: Ramses Barden. Just read an article about him in the local paper. The Skins need this guy to be their #1 possession receiver. He wiould be the Art Monk they have missed, not the faster, but the toughest, the one you rely on, the leader.

With injury concerns I'll pick a crazy one. Beanie Wells with #13. I don't think there's any chance of it happening but it's as good as anybody elses guess.

Posted by: scampbell1975 | April 25, 2009 1:43 PM
==========================================
I'm having a tough time guessing when Beanie and Knowshon Moreno are getting picked.

They could go middle, or they could drop way down just because RB isn't a pressing need for many teams, and those that do need one tend to pick RBs after round one.

mission accomplished!!!

nobody has a clue what the skins will do or what they want to do

we have put our trust in the media to give us a clue.

are you kidding me!

the media and ex ball players are a joke

the only viable option to get Sanchez is;

he drops to #13 (not happening)
trade up to #8 (not enough ammunition)

so let's move on guys...or should I say move down.

my gut tells me the want Rey Malaluga and believe they can move down a few slots to still get him. If not, that's the pick

Posted by: snyderbandwagon | April 25, 2009 1:51 PM | Report abuse

Forget Monroe, Forget Oher, forget the rest. Just draft Andre Smith and find a way to get a couple more guard/tackle types. I think he is the fountain of youth, the elixir of new hope for this OL. Instant overnight improvement to pro bowl levels ... for **ONE YEAR*** then you have to bit the bullet and DRAFT OL HIGH in the next draft especially since you are looking at playing 18 games and playoffs extending into FEBRUARY!

Posted by: periculum | April 25, 2009 1:54 PM | Report abuse

If we did the deal with the Jets, and in return got their second rounder, we'd have to give up our 3rd rounder (based on the draft value chart, if anybody even goes by that). If that's the case, we could grab some OL help to go along w/a pass rusher, shoring up our two weakest areas. Makes too much sense, it'll never happen.

Posted by: Notorious_LMG | April 25, 2009

Trade Crash Cooley to the Jets or Tampa Bay to get more picks. Especially if you decided to trade Campbell to avoid problems next year. Pick up Ramses Barden in the 2nd or 3rd. The rest OL/LB/CB. I could live with bottom 4 OT as all can play guard. Still need a guard/center like Mack or Unger.

Please, kind sir, provide one single post on any previous thread where I said anything OTHER than Sanchez not being a good fit here due to the uncertainty at the head coaching position (and not to mention the other factors, such as a weak offensive line and dearth of draft picks to surround him with the proper talent to succeed).

#8 is too low. The Rams have been instigating things a bit to get more value for their pick threatening to pick Sanchez. My guess is they trade Bulger to the Jets, Get Sanchez plus additional picks to rebuild with. And you, Mr. Snydersbandwagon will have to be right there in the mix trying to get that #2 ... EPPP DON'T DO IT SNIDELY, DONT'T DO IT, don't trade next year's picks for that sexy chick crack you so covet! Ahhh too late snidelybandwagon you did it ... go back to the rear end of the league. That would be a mistake. Especially if you end up trading Campbell to go with Colt. You need better OL with Colt or even more so with Todd Collins starting.

He is still the same stupid Woodward High fantasy football player. He comes from the Strato-o-matic football days. Sure stick a Marino, a Mercury Morris on your team and then watch it go with every roll of the die.

He's a idiot. He should not be the GM for this team. Fortunately, the Dallas Cowboys fans have to suffer through this ... as do the Oakland Raider fans. Its nice to know we have company. Bill Bidwell is no longer the worst owner with Georgia Frontiere slightly in front of him.

Let them get Boldin, Bey, Edwards ...

If somehow we could get Ramses Barden I think you will then see Dr. Campbell cure himself and average 300-400 yard passing games sans interceptions. The running game will be weak as Portis is about done but he will be good enough to keep 'em honest.

By the way, a mock I'm looking at now (there's a million out there, but supposedly this guy is good) has us picking Sanchez at 13, and Brian Orakpo going to Denver with their 2nd pick at 18.

P.S. Peri, both this guy (Rick Gosselin at the Dallas Morning News) and Matt McGuire at Walter Football now have Andre Smith going at pick 6 to Cincinnati.

Take center Jonathan Luigs over Williams. Having brains helps in the swirling menagerie and turnstile of coaches and systems that is the offense of the Washington Redskins. Got to select brains or else massive, raw power like Andre Smith.

The defense is easier it has remained fairly consistent starting with Ray Rhodes, through Marvin Lewis, Grilliams, Blache. Snyder does a decent job picking these. Its the offense where he big time screws the pooch.

Yeah Marvin Lewis is no dolt. All you need are guys like him and a speedy scat back type in the 2nd or 3rd round and you have a prolific running attack. Have to think he goes higher than that.

Here's hoping for yet another gaffe by Smith will push him to #13. And "pretty boy" does or says something to endear him to Georgia Frontiere at #2. A-team's Mr. T Andre Smith just needs Colonel Samuel's to point his pancacke blocks at the right DE's and LB's.

The Rams are believed to be talkin with Washington, as well as possibly Denver and/or the Jets about a possible trade as all three are reportedly interested in moving up to get USC QB Mark Sanchez. Using the standard NFL trade value chart as a guide, all three teams would need at least their own first-round pick, plus another first rounder to move up to the #2 pick. In fact, according to the chart, Denver, which has the 12th and 18th picks overall, would still need a mid-second round pick to get to the #2 pick, although St. Louis may be willing to accept less in order not to have to incur the salary cap hit that comes with having a very high pick. Stay tuned!
