Derrick Dockery Is a Happy, Happy Man

I was stunned by the Derrick Dockery contract. The Redskins were stunned by the Derrick Dockery contract. And the man himself was stunned by it all. Just got off the phone with him.

Dockery's agent, Todd France (who also did the monster Nate Clements deal) read the market amazingly well and as Wednesday and Thursday approached it became clear to both sides that the big guard was going to hit this market. The word then was that top guards like Steinbach and Dielman would push $15 million; turns out they'll all blow past that figure in guaranteed money. Dock visited Buffalo Friday morning and the Bills blew him away with a seven-year, $49 million with $18.5 million guaranteed and worth $18 over the first three years of the contract alone.

"It went far and beyond what I expected," Dockery said on his cell phone a few minutes ago. "I'm very excited. When Todd told me about what they offered, it was a no-brainer."

Dockery said there were times during the season when he thought he would be re-signing here, a'la Ladell Betts. But the more time that passed the more that feeling diminished. "I thought it was going to get done here and I had a lot of faith in Coach Gibbs and Mr. Snyder but it never happened. But this is a business, too, and I had a great time in my four years here. I loved played with Randy and Chris and Jon and Casey and I loved playing for Coach Bugel, but in the end it was time to move on. My wife and I prayed about it and the financial part of it was great, too, and we felt like it was something we needed to do."

Dockery said that since signing he has heard from Randy Thomas, Chris Samuels, Cornelius Griffin, Renaldo Wynn,. Phillip Daniels and Demetric Evans among others. Mr. Snyder also called him to congratulate him on the contract.

"They're really happy for me, and it shocked a lot of people," Dockery said. "But me and Todd were very confident in our ability and it worked out in the end."

Dockery already has one friend on the Bills- former Skins tight end Robert Royal. Royal is actually back in Virginia and Dock says he be back in this area next week and will be hanging with Royal. I told Dock to make sure he puts a bunch of this money away - invests it, is careful with it - and not to go around buying Benzes for everyone. He got a laugh out of that. That's not his style. He's a level-headed kid and he won't go nuts with this money.

Coach Joe said they worked "extremely hard" to re-sign Dock and wanted to keep him, but as the midnight hour drew near they began to know they would not be going quite so high as some other teams might. When Howard asked Coach Joe if he was surprised by the kind of money being throw around in free agency he said: "I would say everybody in the league is."

Again, what a huge contract. I am definitely in the wrong business. I've got to become an agent.
