Derrick Dockery a bad fit for zone blocking scheme

Derrick Dockery continued to plummet on the Redskins' depth chart Sunday. The veteran guard was inactive for the first time in his eight-year career.

Washington's coaching staff determined in the preseason that Dockery, 30, was a bad fit for the team's zone blocking scheme. In the first two games, Dockery split time with Kory Lichtensteiger, 25, who was out of football during the 2009 season.

Lichtensteiger started at left guard in Week 3 against St. Louis, ending Dockery's string of 111 consecutive starts. Dockery's role has continued to decrease since the Redskins lost to the Rams.

"I think it's tough," said center Casey Rabach, who has played alongside Dockery for years. "But the guy never shows it. The guy's always smiling. The guy's always upbeat. The guy's always saying, 'I'll be all right. I'll be all right.'"

The Redskins selected Dockery in the third round (81st overall) of the 2003 draft. He spent two seasons (2007-08) with Buffalo after signing as a free agent and returned to the Redskins before the 2009 season after the Bills released him.

Washington renegotiated Dockery's contract in March. He received a $5-million signing bonus and has a base salary of $2.91 million this season.

Maybe we can try him at WR.

Knew this was coming. He's a big, straight ahead, road grader type. Shanny is slowly getting his guys in and Vinny's guys out. Thank God, we'll finally have a chance.

I feel bad for Dockery, who has always seemed like a good guy. Hopefully he'll land somewhere else next year in a scheme that better suits his abilities.
I can't fault the team for picking players that fit their scheme though. I would say trade him, but they'll never get anything for him with those contract numbers and they still need him for depth anyways...

The new and improved LaRon Landry is making the old, outdated LaRon Landry look like an entirely different person.

He very quickly made up for leaving Lee wide open on that pass play. Awesome way to start that game

Had my scrapple this morning and starting on the Yuengling. I'm ready for some Skins football today. Dirty thirty keeps this up and the one time bust (according to RI) may be a pro bowler.

Skins can't run for diddily squat against a body bad packers defense. THen a bad snap = no field goal. First offensive possession = - 25 yards.

4-12 sorry folks !

Posted by: skinsinsider | October 10, 2010 1:19 PM | Report abuse

So much for Green Bay's "non-existent" run defense. The defense has decided to not show up today, and it's been less than a quarter.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | October 10, 2010 1:20 PM | Report abuse

I hope Shanny is reaming every ass hole on that team right now. Way to blow a gift start.

fumble recovered on the 22, go backwards then bend over and take it in the a$$ - that's my skins

Posted by: BrooklynSkins | October 10, 2010 1:22 PM | Report abuse

Just when we had the chance to sucker punch the packers at the start of the game, we completely sh!t the bed and they turn it around on us. This feels terribly familiar.

Posted by: aaronharman | October 10, 2010 1:23 PM | Report abuse

Hahaha why are so many Redskins fans so fickle?

After the Skins won last week, the talk was "this division is winable".

The skins are down by 7 with 8 minutes left in the 1st quarter, and all of a sudden the game is lost and they're going 4-12?

Alrighty then...

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | October 10, 2010 1:28 PM | Report abuse

Looking at it positively, no way that the Vikings sign the McNabb that is playing today, so we most likely get to keep him after this season.

Posted by: Curzon417 | October 10, 2010 1:28 PM | Report abuse

McNabb...stinking up the joint. Hopefully he get's it together before the Packers get really rolling.

Posted by: TWISI | October 10, 2010 1:29 PM | Report abuse

Offense and defense disappointing early. These are the qualities of a team that has a long shot at being 0.500 this year.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | October 10, 2010 1:29 PM | Report abuse

OK, which team's payroll is McNabb on? Overthrows a sure TD, overthrows Cooley on 3rd down, misses a snap.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | October 10, 2010 1:29 PM | Report abuse

Misses a wide open Davis last week and two receivers on this drive alone. Maybe this is why we haven't given McNabb a contract extension yet.

Surprise stop on 4th. Let's see, a 2nd round pick for McNabb, 2-11 for 10 yards in 2nd half last week, runs out of bounds instead of burning time off clock, throws into the dirt. This week, misses 2 WIDE OPEN receivers on one series, ball goes through his hands on snap. This guys a 11 year veteran!!!???

Post Packers game, so it's obvious to say that Lichtensteiger was even worse today than DDock has been the entire season. Needless to say, guard and center positions should be addressed before the WR, RB, and free safety positions in the 2011 draft & offseason...
