Devin Thomas

He was the one WR the Skins would seriously think about at the end of the day with the 21st pick. This is very good value for someone who had a first round rating at this position from many teams and is well suited to the West Coast offense. Tampa and Philly took a long look at him in the first round.

He was seen as the class of the position, and it's a position Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato placed as a massive priority. He's seen as a "one-year-wonder" by some

Interesting to hear what all the naysayers will post now...

Posted by: Brian | April 26, 2008 6:49 PM | Report abuse

We better get some damned good guys with the rest of these picks. O line, D line, secondary, LB...

Good grief, all this waiting and it's a freakin' wide receiver.

Again, I say to you, boo.

Hey, I'll take it. Now lets go grab a DB and DL this round!!

Posted by: TDawg | April 26, 2008 6:49 PM | Report abuse

Awesome pick. He ran 4.4 six foot two and is strong and can go get it. Great value and I think we got a steal because he was a first rounder that slipped.

Posted by: tommy | April 26, 2008 6:50 PM | Report abuse

I like the pick. I also liked Flowers, but only had one pick.

Posted by: BT | April 26, 2008 6:50 PM | Report abuse

Didn't think we'd have that fall in to our laps...

Posted by: R-La | April 26, 2008 6:50 PM | Report abuse

KC is killing it in this draft.

Posted by: marlonjohn | April 26, 2008 6:50 PM | Report abuse

Ok I hated the trade with Atlanta originally because I thought we really needed Merling....

But Devin Thomas is great value in the 2nd round and certainly could have a long-term impact.

I'm betting Calais Campbell will be our next pick.....

So... maybe I'm warming up to the trade....

Posted by: Mike C. | April 26, 2008 6:51 PM | Report abuse

don't like the trade...

but do like this draft selection...

so for me, it's really a push!

The kid has much upside according to Mel Kiper! He just said good value for the skins

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | April 26, 2008 6:51 PM | Report abuse

KC rules this draft - can we trade Vinny for Carl Petersen?

Posted by: Mo (Cleveland) | April 26, 2008 6:51 PM | Report abuse

there was value at 34 roughly the same as at 21. it looks like a pretty smart trade. thomas has upside. probably won't be a big contributor as a rookie but we are going to need a year to learn the new offense anyway, so hopefully by 09 he's developing along with our other draft picks.

hopefully no ocho stinko now.

but we do have some cap room... could get interesting.

Posted by: give 'em credit | April 26, 2008 6:51 PM | Report abuse

KC will still finish last in the AFC West.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 6:51 PM | Report abuse

Hahaha......what will you whiners say now, huh? Most of you wanted to keep the 1st rd pick to draft a guy we grabbed in the 2nd anyway! Stop drinking the hatorade and give some love to Danny boy's people. Now we can focus on the O and d lines with the other 2 2nd round picks......Maybe even pick up C Campbell witht he pick we got from Atl.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 6:52 PM | Report abuse

This trade is looking better all the time. Now wrap up the second round with a DB and a DE and I'm happy as a puppy with two peters.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 6:52 PM | Report abuse

He may not have Randy Moss talent, but he sure had that Randy Moss look in his eye once the first round ended. I have a feeling Mr. Thomas might make a lot of teams upset for not drafting him . . .

Posted by: Just J | April 26, 2008 6:52 PM | Report abuse

Bye Bye Jordy - have fun in Green Bay.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Gotta love this pick... Our GMs are learning to patient... If Calais Campbell falls to us well never have to sign a free agent again... This is the first time I have been proud of a skins draft since we traded back to get Champ Bailey

Posted by: Kenny | April 26, 2008 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Seriously people, stop whining. We got a huge steal here. With any luck, we get S Johnson and DE Campbell in the 2nd.

Posted by: Jim | April 26, 2008 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Campbell? I don't think he'll be there at #48

Posted by: Mo (Cleveland) | April 26, 2008 6:54 PM | Report abuse

Who will be better Devon Thomas or Jordy Nelson?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 6:55 PM | Report abuse

We can use the cap room for Julius Peppers.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 6:55 PM | Report abuse

best part is we won't overpay for ocho.

Posted by: Bt | April 26, 2008 6:55 PM | Report abuse

While Im not sold on any of the WRs in this draft, if this will prevent Snyder from dealing away what little future this franchise has for Chad Johnson or Roy Williams then this is addition by subtraction.

And hopefully we knocked Thomas' ego down a peg or two by passing on him early.

Posted by: Mattsoundworld | April 26, 2008 6:56 PM | Report abuse

Rosenhaus is Devin's agent. Big suprise.

Posted by: SCSkins | April 26, 2008 6:56 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: BT | April 26, 2008 6:56 PM | Report abuse

Ok..lookin good!

We've got Thomas at 6'1"

Anthony Mix at 6'5"

We've got Moss, ARE...

Posted by: siciwidit | April 26, 2008 6:56 PM | Report abuse

I was scared we were going to take Thomas at #21. To get him now in the 2nd round is a grand slam. We just got the same player we would have taken anyway at #21 - and traded a #3 for a #2 and a #5 for a #4. Makes sense to me!!! Vinny!!!!!! I'm liking you a lot more now than I did yesterday!@

Posted by: egrib | April 26, 2008 6:56 PM | Report abuse

Campbell shouldnt be there by 48 but look at Devon Thomas' fall so anythings possible... Maybe we can move up and grab him by packaging our second and fourth round slections

Posted by: Kenny | April 26, 2008 6:57 PM | Report abuse

what bafoons! We need O and D linemen. What good is it to have a wide out if the QB is flat on his back?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 6:58 PM | Report abuse

He has the speed of Darrell Green and the size of Art Monk. If he has good hands, which 79 catches says he does, he could be a huge target for Jason. Glad Brandon Lloyd was sent packing, and this may make up for that fiasco. I love the pick.

Posted by: Bob | April 26, 2008 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Thomas is built for the West Coast Offense.

Posted by: Bill Walsh | April 26, 2008 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Need a good DE with the 48th. Who does everyone like??? ( I think Campbell will be gone)

Posted by: redryan400 | April 26, 2008 6:59 PM | Report abuse

Devin Thomas will be #2 receiver once he learns the system. He may move to #1 as Moss gets older. Randle El moves to #3 reciver and gets to work on punt returns again. (Thomas does kickoffs, not punts).

Nelson is probably a career #2 WR.

Posted by: jcook | April 26, 2008 6:59 PM | Report abuse

Great value for the pick. I like that they traded down, and gotta believe that it's Campbell with #48...

Posted by: CowboyH8r | April 26, 2008 6:59 PM | Report abuse

to be honest with you i woulda ratherd flowers and let mix develop... people dont think he'll work out but I do so who knows... and still even with Thomas i think the trade was terrible... we gave away picks to let a team move up... i dont understand that at all... period... it was poor football and im annoyed

Posted by: anthony mix | April 26, 2008 6:59 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: alex35332 | April 26, 2008 6:59 PM | Report abuse

Calm down...

O and D Line....

WE STILL HAVE 8 MORE PICKS

Posted by: sicwidit | April 26, 2008 7:00 PM | Report abuse

You're a buffoon, the O-lineman left are not worth 2nd rounders and the D-Lineman that are left are dropping.

Posted by: kreitmaster | April 26, 2008 7:00 PM | Report abuse

im guessing you mean buffoon?

Posted by: spellcheck | April 26, 2008 7:00 PM | Report abuse

And now, we don't have to pay 1st round money for a 1st round caliber player. Most mocks had him going at #11 to Buffalo.

Looks like a great trade at this point.

Posted by: Ian | April 26, 2008 7:01 PM | Report abuse

Devin Thomas is not as fast as Darrell Green or as big as Art Monk, but he isn't bad. He is faster than most CBs and he is big enough (almost the same size as Jordy).

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:02 PM | Report abuse

i love how everyone has fallen in love with anthony mix. he was on a practice squad, and we picked him up. he MIGHT develop, but who knows. are you really going to put all your stock into him? just cause he's tall? i mean, if he was THAT good, he wouldn't be on the practice squad.

Two thoughts:

1. Snyder could save some money and just pick Kiper's best avaiable.

2. Is it possible Parcels was pissed the skins refused to trade for Taylor and took Merling (could be reaching on that, but the pick seems odd for them).

Posted by: BT | April 26, 2008 7:02 PM | Report abuse

you guys are fooling yourselves. other than Campbell there are no d-line difference makers left and he will be gone when we pick next. we don't need more rolw players. that is why it WAS a stupid trade.

Posted by: sicwidit | April 26, 2008 7:05 PM | Report abuse

Most draft gurus had him going between 11 and 18. Mark Maske had him going 18 to the Texans. I think we got very goof value and we shall see if we are sticking to being smart with these next 2 picks. I am excited because we have not had a big wide out in a while.

That amuses me. You're annoyed that we got higher picks AND the guy that we wanted all along? This is a coup for the skins, and I'm not the only one who believes so. I'll believe in Mix when I see something out of him.

but i love the thomas pick as a 2nd rounder......and i think q. groves might be there at the next pick if campbell isnt......the run on o linemen in the 1st rd seems to have left the field barren....

better to try and get a S or LB....

OK, the Nicks watch is on!! I want that mammoth road grader in a Redskins Uniform with the next pick - he goes 340 lbs which is definitely Redskins material. He is abusive at the point of attack... Nothing better than a massive Nebraska lineman to make a draft. We MUST address the offensive line in this round and preferable another O-line with our 3d. We've become small, weak, and fragile up front and it's just not very becoming. It's not Redskins football when we can't punch it in from 3 yards out. I want PHYSICAL DOMINATING line play to return to the Burgundy and Gold. Draft Nicks!!!!

So, what's the consensus from the unruly mob? Devin Thomas is a bust, or is he a HOFer? I need guidance on which direction I should aim my righteous indignation.

Doesn't Gene Washington look like one of those consummately classy diplomats? He looks like he should be giving speeches about nuclear non-proliferation, not reading draft names.

Merling will probably fit well as a 3-4 DE, since he has DT size and run stopping ability. Parcells wouldn't grab him if Merling didn't fit the scheme.

I'm a Michigan State grad and fan, so watched him closely. Devin is FANTASTIC pick. He is explosive and a character guy. He is going to be a star in the league, and the Redskins are incredibly lucky to get him; I thought they would take him with their first-round pick. He is also an awesome kick returner. I am a lifelong Lions fan (obligatory smirks; well deserved, except for Barry). But from now on, I'm also watchin' the Redskins. The Eagles, Bucs, and especially the Titans are going to regret passing on Devin Thomas.

Now that we have the obligatory skill position player drafted, safely in the fold, and headed to DC, we can concentrate on REAL REDSKINS FOOTBALL - offensive and defensive line. The past DECADE I have been sickened to watch our weak, putrid lines get shoved all over the field in some blasphemous, hideous display of "redskins football." It has been a shameful disgrace to watch. We have the right type in spots - Montgomery, Golston, Thomas, Jansen, Samuels - but we are incomplete. If we can somehow get either Campbell or Nicks with this next pick then I'll be in heaven...

No we game up our 5th and moved our 3rd back some, YOU IDIOT!!!

In reading the scouting reports the one guy who sticks out for later is Josh Johnson. He sounded like the second coming of Jim Zorn.... quick feet, quick release, smooth ball, rapid reads etc. If we can get him on day #2 then he would be perfect for this offense -

Posted by: egrib | April 26, 2008 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Minnesota would be crazy to take a DE. They just traded for Allen.

as always, good pt...

LOL!

How can you call a guy named "Cialis" a "lazy stiff"?

Frickin' hilarious!

(Steinbog reported that Thomas goes by Showtime).

Just got back from playing le fubol and wow look at what we did!?!?!

Nice trade and I think an excellent pick. If nothing else we have a potential longterm franchise type guy and hopefully this means no to any stupid overpaying for anyone else.

It's like Dinny Snyerrato feel out of the smart tree and hit a few branches on the way down.

Posted by: sfskin | April 26, 2008 7:36 PM | Report abuse

I thought Minnesota still needed another DE opposite Allen?

My bad if I missed someone.

Posted by: Mike C. | April 26, 2008 7:36 PM | Report abuse

If both QB's are there at 51, I could see the skins trading down again.

Posted by: JD | April 26, 2008 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Laws should be there at 51, and maybe in the forth.

Posted by: BT | April 26, 2008 7:36 PM | Report abuse

not sure if the skins would be interested, but Dizon from CU is a player, so is the CB, maybe a later round pick . . .

Posted by: skinsfan8KaboveMSL | April 26, 2008 7:37 PM | Report abuse

Love the Thomas pick. Would've preferred Merling but Thomas sounds good - not bad for a guy who most people thought might go to the Bills at #11. My $.02 for next two picks - John Greco OG, and Pat Sims DT

I remember Dan Connor, he was my husband on Roseanne.

Posted by: Roseanne Barr | April 26, 2008 7:38 PM | Report abuse

And the winner is... P DIDDY!!!

Posted by: cabb | April 26, 2008 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Tell you what, there have been some really odd picks haven't there. Bet you no one picked Donnie Avery to be the first WR taken!

So do we go value or need next? I reckon Dan Connor would have to be pretty good value, but Marcus Harrison might be a bigger need.

I hate sitting behind philly, twice. . . .

Posted by: P Diddy | April 26, 2008 7:33 PM

Hey, everytime I see a Cialis dude he's kickin' back in a tub in a field of wildflowers, holding hands with some middle-aged chick in another tub. He ain't exactly Action Jackson!

Posted by: Please hold me | April 26, 2008 7:40 PM | Report abuse

I admit, I just came back from hangover brunch and I'm 4 mimosas in so far. A few more mimosas, and I'm going to need some Cialis as well.

Just saying is all.

Billick on NFLN is doing pretty well also.

Posted by: P Diddy | April 26, 2008 7:42 PM | Report abuse

guessing philly goes for a WR here. . .

more like hoping. . .

Posted by: marlonjohn | April 26, 2008 7:43 PM | Report abuse

We're in a Philly sandwich here.

Man, just flipped over to ESPN for a sec...NFLN coverage is soooo much better. I can't stand everyone yelling across one another on ESPN. Maybe I'm just an old man. You kids get off my lawn.

Give me Nicks from Nebraska, then give me Trevor Laws.

Posted by: Greg | April 26, 2008 7:43 PM | Report abuse

I think we have issues other than QB. Most notably protecting the QB and getting to the QB...

Posted by: BT | April 26, 2008 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Goves, Laws, Campbell is the order I have it.

Posted by: marlonjohn | April 26, 2008 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Y'know, Hanley Ramirez for Florida is the best player in baseball.

Okay, that was a palate cleanser: back to the draft.

Damn, there goes Trevor

Posted by: scampbell1975 | April 26, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

I will eat my words, didn't think Laws would go that high

Posted by: BT | April 26, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Hey, Bill, me too. I'm an NFC North guy, but the Lions have been hopeless today. So, I KNOW Thomas is going to tear up the NFC East. Just wait.

Posted by: faygokid | April 26, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Has anyone ever gone to watch the NFL Draft in person? I can't imagine being one of those yahoos there. I can't imagine being friends with one of the yahoos there. Bizarre.

Posted by: P Diddy | April 26, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Just saying, if we pick up Cambell now (and we're on the clock right NOW), we can get our backup QB at 51, someone that a lot of folks thought might be a 1st rounder.

Posted by: Bill | April 26, 2008 7:47 PM | Report abuse

ESPN Radio just STRONGLY suggested that we offered both our 2008 and 2009 1st round picks for Ocho Cinco.....

I'm SOOOOO glad that never happened... talk about mortaging your future.

Posted by: Mike C. | April 26, 2008 7:47 PM | Report abuse

Steve, no doubt, but in 3 years he'll walk, and Lowell, and Beckett will have 2 more rings.

Posted by: Greg | April 26, 2008 7:47 PM | Report abuse

Laws is really short. Philly can have him. Let's go OL.

Posted by: mtnskins | April 26, 2008 7:47 PM | Report abuse

C'mon boys, be smart here, don't mess it up.

Posted by: kost52 | April 26, 2008 7:47 PM | Report abuse

You never trade your first round pick for a second round pick. This team is heading to the bottom of the heap where it belongs. I cashed in my chips this year after waisting my money on season tickets for the last 9 years. I am sick of this owner and the merry-go-round of coaches. Gibbs came here for back pay. Took it and left. If you are a Redskins fan, get ready for some of the bleakest years in franchise history.

Posted by: Kenny | April 26, 2008 7:50 PM | Report abuse

He's a great pick ... if you needed a TE ... but seriously... when we're desperate for DL, OL, S, CB.... what are we doing picking a TE.

Posted by: Mike C. | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

does Vinny eat with a cork on the end of his fork? omg...

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

I don't care if Davis is Godzilla, TE was not a need.

They are going to convert that dude to FB.

Posted by: SCSkins | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

A TIGHT END?!?!?

Posted by: sfskin | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Cialis will last a few more hours - he's ready for when you really need him.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse

We just signed Cooley to a five or six year deal and we draft a TE... DE Campbell was there for the taking and we blew it... Hope he lasts another three picks...

Posted by: Kenny | April 26, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Have to hope that no one between that pick and the next needs a DE, or there are two DEs out there the Skins want to choose from. Otherwise, that's just terrible on every possible level.

Posted by: JGP | April 26, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse

beep beep beep

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

how is Jason Campbell going to be at throwing to all these receivers while lying on his back?! this is sad...

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Fred Davis enrolled as an RB, converted from WR, then to TE. So he has skills.

Zorn obviously saw something.

Posted by: SCSkins | April 26, 2008 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Desean Jackson is going to go wild against us...BECAUSE WE WON'T EVER GET TO THEIR QB!!

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

The problem with the Redskins is Dan Snyder wants to run things. He is calling all the shots. While that may be the right of the owner, it doesn't build great teams. If the Redskins have zero chance at greatness, why support them with your money putting your butt in Danny's seats. The Redskins have been reduced to a team that is only watchable in a bar where the beers at gametime are $1, nothing more.

Posted by: TSS | April 26, 2008 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Brain trust was obviously pretty high on Davis...how much of the 5 minutes did they use on that pick? 45 seconds maybe?

Soo long Cialis...

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

WTF, we spend millions on a TE, make a brilliant trade and then pick a TE. We need some linemen.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Skins needed a Big Possession Receiver.

Fred Davis is exactly that.

He WAS USC's offense this year and set all-time records there.....at USC.

Posted by: Nice Pick | April 26, 2008 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Looks like Calis lasted a couple of picks as opposed to a few hours... This was a huge mistake... He was gift wrapped to us...

Posted by: Kenny | April 26, 2008 7:59 PM | Report abuse

what are we doing? as good as these guys are, we don't need all these receivers.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 8:03 PM | Report abuse

I liked the Thomas pick--it was certainly a need, but Davis next? There were more pressing needs that still had value in the draft--especially DE at #48. This draft is deep at CB and solid O line players, so we can still find depth there later. Fred Davis is a nice player, but not a pressing need. Why not use Mix in that role if the idea is to put two receiving threats at TE on the field at the same time? Bottom line--good talent, but not necessarily filling the most need--unless they are to be used for a pending trade!?
