Mike Shanahan: Devin Thomas must commit to being a pro

On Saturday, Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan made the decision to release third-year receiver Devin Thomas. On Sunday, following the Redskins' 16-13 overtime win, Shanahan explained his reasoning.

"I sat down and talked to Devin many times and told him what he needed to do to be a pro football player," Shanahan said, "both on and off of the football field. And if he does do that, both on and off of the football field, he'll have a chance to play in the National Football League. But until he does that -- he's got the talent. He sure does. But he's going to have to commit to being a pro."

Shanahan did not elaborate on how Thomas wasn't conducting himself as a pro.

Thomas was on the field for only one offensive possession in the team's first four games. He was used primarily as a kickoff returner. The Redskins used two returners in his place Sunday: Chad Simpson and Brandon Banks both lined up deep on kickoffs

Banks had two returns for a total of 33 yards, Simpson had 27 yards in his lone return and Byron Westbrook also returned once for six yards.

At first glance I thought it said, "Devin Thomas must commit to being a poo"

A shame we can't get rid of these guys for a pick of some sort, but really we should all be sending thank you notes to DT for getting Vinny surgically removed from underneath Snydley's desk.

Grr.. looks like Kolb is playing well so far.

Well, I guess Favre can kiss his Wrangler endorsement deal a sweet goodby. One line of apparel he might still be able to cash in on - cock socks, a peter heater for them cold, cold nights in the North Country.

Ok, Poopy, that one was pretty funny.

Kolb's playing like poop, right Rach?

BANKS looks great as long as he's not hit hard. So far so good. Anyody miss DT's returns at this point? Maybe later huh?

LO-A had a day on defense. The dude just gets better and better. ORAKPO and LANDREY laid down some sacks and hits didn't they? They could call holding on an o-lineman every time BRIAN takes to the rush.

HUNTER the PUNTER redeems himself today, and it was great to see the old warrior CP cheering on his team-mates.
Who would have thunk it, 3-2 five in, and 2-0 on the road and in the division. Super-dooper.

We need a pick-up on the o-line. Injuries are starting to take a toll. I'd love a trade of DOCK for a young mid-roung pick who's an up-and-comer.

And 'TD' MARKO MITCHELL is still out there in FA. DT too for that matter.

Or extenze...No coincidence he's #4.

no poopy.. Kolb is actually playing well so far... Hopefully 49ers can pull it off, somehow. San Fran was supposed to win the NFC West, yet they are still winless. But in all honesty they threw the game away last week against ATL.

really?? after that game another Devin Thomas post?

Posted by: chrislarry | October 10, 2010 9:20 PM | Report abuse

So is it officially illegal to hit on a woman? I mean, can you still approach a woman in a bar and introduce yourself? And flirting... I guess that's gonna get you 10 to 15 in the pen.

Look, if Big Ben or Favre or whoever did something illegal, take them out back and shoot them, whatever, I don't care. But lets not regulate our species into sexual sterilization here.

It's news. It's the first time they could get Shanahan to say anything about Thomas. If you don't like the post, stick around. There will be plenty of worse ones coming up. This is Redskins Insider! If you want to read about the game, check Keim tomorrow.

No...News would be an update on TW and Jamal Brown.

Nobody cares for another post about another one of Vinny's busts.

I wish Jason Reid would commit to being a pro journalist, and stop writing boring "Insider" articles. Jason, why don't YOU do some real work as a journalist and find out WHY Thomas wasn't acting like a "pro"? Are you really naive enough to think a head coach is going to spoon feed you that info? lol

Posted by: cali_snowboarder | October 10, 2010 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Good post Rick.

Now we get a peek into the devious mind of Coach Shanahan. Notice he said Devin needs to be a pro "on and off the field".

Was Thomas enjoying the DC nightlife too much for his liking? Maybe playing the laed in Fantasia's music video pissed him off.

Obviously, some of coach's displeasure is more than just Xs and Os.

I believe JR asked Shanny about Devin Thomas during the post-game. I was kind of curious what he'd say myself.
