Agent: No change in Donovan McNabb extension talks

Redskins fans have increasingly expressed concern because quarterback Donovan McNabb has not signed a contract extension.

In the past few weeks, many Insider readers have emailed me about the situation, suggesting the sides must have reached an impasse in negotiations. McNabb can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and silence from the team and McNabb has helped to stir speculation.

So we reached out to McNabb's agent, Fletcher N. Smith III, in an attempt to learn where things stand. Smith declined to reveal details of his conversations with the Redskins, but he's not worried about reaching an agreement.

"It is our desire to get a deal done in Washington ... that hasn't changed," Smith said Thursday afternoon in a phone interview. "Donovan made it clear, I think, that he likes it there and would like to end his career there."

Smith went on to dismiss the suggestions of some Redskins sources who have surmised that McNabb's early struggles in Coach Mike Shanahan's complicated offense may have prompted the team to take a wait-and-see approach with the 12-year veteran. While declining to comment on his talks with General Manager Bruce Allen, Smith said McNabb's preseason performance has had no bearing on the situation.

At times during training camp and the preseason, McNabb has been critical of his efficiency in Shanahan's version of the West Coast offense.

"Well, I haven't heard him criticize himself, so it's hard for me to [respond] to that," Smith said. "But I know he wants to excel wherever he goes. And the competitor in him ... I could certainly see, because he's such a competitor, him wanting to get it down and can get it right so he's playing and not thinking.

"I'm not suggesting that he's doing that, again, because I haven't heard him criticize himself about not knowing the offense and not being where he wants to be. But he's motivated to be the best, so I wouldn't be surprised if he expressed some concerns about, or was critical about his play at certain points throughout a game."

The bottom line, Smith said, is that nothing has changed for the negative between McNabb and the Redskins. "I don't feel any differently" about an agreement getting done, Smith said.

beep-beep, dook just called. The administration wants the university's credits back.

You're going off a little half-cocked on this blood drive deal. You don't have enough info to make the charge your advancing. Your theory is all supposition and conjecture.

No extension cause we are gonna sign Peyton in the off season.

Posted by: zjenks | September 2, 2010 3:44 PM | Report abuse

Must....sign....contract!

Thanks for the fantasy support, y'all. iH8dallas, try something fun like selecting 2 RBs with the same bye and have the bench RB be the guy from Detroit with the bad knee that's probably getting cut this Saturday. Not that I'd know anything about that.

I do have Brady and Ray Rice, though.

"No change" in contract extension talks means there isn't one and they are no closer to getting one.

I'm glad he "feels" no differently about getting an agreement done. Too bad feelings don't legally bind players to teams.

Maybe this John Beck signing has some deeper merit to it.

...seriously, if I were McNabb now at this free-floating stage of my career ready to sell myself out to any team close to the SB; I'd play a year here and then bolt for Minny.

Anyone who thinks that thought is not somewhere in McNabb's mind is a naive fool.

Sitting there watching my blood flow through a clear tube and into a plastic bag makes me wonder how much farther away from my body this little donation will travel. Will it find its way to a local car accident victim , or perhaps be passed onto some courageous , wounded soldier who is fighting in a war that never should have been started? I'll never know. And I really don't want to. All that matters is that it finds its way to whoever needs it.
I like to donate blood. It has no negative effect on me and helps other person. I do not know who nor will I ever, but I like knowing that I made a difference.

"...you are all just racist!"

You know like I do that there are times when being racist has its advantages:

You find yourself saying, "Yassuh," to a mean white Southern cop late at night on an abandoned highway.

You want your large lawn mowed and think, "Mexicans," before heading to the day Labor corner where they congregate.

You find yourself changing seats on the plane after the middle eastern looking fellow sitting next to you straps his back pack to his chest.

You are only upset by inter-racial porn when the woman in the group scene is of the same race as yours.

You hear the words 'poor' and 'inbred' and automatically think Appalachia and hillbilly'.

You cross the street at the sight of four dread-locked black teenagers pointing your way the day you leave the bank with money in your pocket.

You know you can be rude to your polite Canadian friend as he's so nice he'll blame himself for your anger.

The words 'mob' and 'Italian' are synonyms in your dictionary at home.

And finally, you skip mistamoe's unfunny, oreo posts as they aren't interesting or smart, but always offend.

Always.

1. There are no sources beyond the ones you fabricate that say anything like his "slow" preseason has delayed a deal. You are out of bounds surmising that there are. The voices in your head while you hang out in the parking lot at RSP do not count.

B. You, Reid, will be the last to know if any deal ever gets done because you are an unwilling pawn in a game you'll never understand.

3. STOP TRYING TO KICK DIRT ON THE FRANCHISE BECAUSE OF YOUR PETTY GRUDGE AND INABILITY TO FIND ANYTHING BEYOND AN UNAMED SOURCE/VOICES IN YOUR FEEBLE HEAD

Minnesota is the spot. Arizona looks like a sinking ship. They lost Boldin and their Oline/run game is suspect. They lost some key defenders in Rolle and Dansby. Truth is Warner made that team happen. The allure of AZ would be the weather/location, Larry Fitzgerald, and playing in a weak division.

But at Minnesota you've got the best Oline and running back in the league, and a coach that you've played under for several years. You've got a defense that you can lean on to take over some games. Enough weapons in the passing game, and there's also no question that they'll be in the market for a new starting QB next year.

I don't know about Jackson, but the other 3 sure do.

However, only Chris Wilson rivals Carter in pass-rushing situations (even from the OLB slot) and none of them rival Carter in taking on an offensive tackle in run support, which will happen in the 3-4.

This formation obviously doesn't suit Carter as well as a 4-3, but he's still better than the other options (though I do think Wilson could be a sleeper there). It's going to be up to Haslett to put Carter in situations that maximize his strengths and mask his weaknesses.

This theory would make sense, but Prince Favre just told the world that Brad Childress doesn't know anything about offense. Donovan doesn't want to saddle himself with a moron on the home stretch like that.

I think the real holdup is that the Shanahans want to see how things are looking around the middle of October...which I think is smart.

You know, portispockets might be straight but you're not playing straight. I stand by what I said: I haven't made any charge of racism. I've asked a question -- is it racism that they won't collect blood in the District.

Learnedfoot, brilliant jurist from Chapel Heel, points out that I have no evidence. He seems to think you have to assemble evidence in order to ask a question. Not sure where he learned that.

I don't know why they didn't set up in D.C., but I imagine there are plenty of reasons outside of simple racism. In addition, is there any reason why a D.C. resident can't donate in MD or VA if he or she wants to? I didn't read the full infomercial by suliman, so if there was something regarding residency requirements, I wouldn't know.

"ONLY IN WASHINGTON"

I am with you bro, that word twisting should not occur in journalism; it is unethical.

However, don't think it only occurs in Washington. Believe me, it happens elsewhere.

Some players and coaches have been terribly misquoted in other cities. I was misquoted in an article once and it does bring consequences out in public, community relationships etc.

Those are the Red Cross's protocols. And they don't just apply it to people who were born in or lived in certain parts of Africa since the late 70s and their lovers. It applies to people who have lived in Western Europe since 1980 and their lovers too.

I agree. If I were McNabb I would sign with Arizona or Minnesota before I resigned with the skins. They have the offensive weapons to be dominant and are more complete teams. He only has a few good years left. Does he want to spend them rebuilding in DC or competing in another city.

Posted by: srobert1117 | September 2, 2010 4:20 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: p1funk

On a similar page. McNabb has something going on in AZ, he does his 'hell week' thing there. Warner didn't 'make that team', but they replaced him with the worst QB in football. Heck, with Jason Campbell, there'd be enough talent there to compete in a weak division. McNabb is a great fit. Why bother having Larry Fitzgerald if you don't have a QB that can throw it to him?

Minny is the other obvious choice. They've got everything they need as long as they have a QB. If McNabb isn't re-signed here, Minny will pay him the $$ he wants. Plus, the Vikes have had good success with old QBs. Moon and Favre among them.

That may suck but that's not racism. The ARC bans everyone who violates their travel and residency restrictions, and it doesn't just apply to folks who have traveled through or lived in Africa. They have a long list. Africa's on their list along with many other countries because some parts of the African continent are obviously hotbeds of communicable diseases. I was rejected myself once many years ago because of my travels.

@ learnedhand1, I've never heard anything about the Western Europe, only Western Africa. The reason given is there's a rare form of HIV called Type O found in western Africa, and available tests for HIV don't detect the Type O strain.

My wife has been in the US for almost 30 years. If she had HIV from her early childhood in Africa, I think there might be some indications by now.

This rule needs to be revisited.

Pulse: 80 to 100 beats/min and regular.

I stay in reasonable shape, and my resting pulse is around 55 beats/min. I suspect there are a lot of athletic types with pulse rates below that listed requirement.

I figure that Mike Shanahan is the youth and Haslett is the veteran. That said, defenses always seem better than offenses in the first part of the season. That's why O/Us are lower early in the season. The only thing that allows offenses to score in the first part of the season is that defensive coaches don't have a lot of film to game plan.

They (red cross) does have a donation center on E street downtown, so I'd be more inclined to ask them (Red Cross) why they are not setting up in DC since it looks like they have control over the whole program and not the team. I did not call the Red Cross, their donation office hours on the web site indicated they were closed.

Yep, totally agreed. If he gets off to a good start and sees a way he can viably beat/compete with Eagles/Boys/Gints for multiple years to come, he'll get it done. But Minny, et al are definitely on his mind. I'd say 50-50 an extension is done by the bye week.

Posted by: Notorious_LMG | September 2, 2010 6:25 PM | Report abuse

On the McNabb situation, the actual subject of this post, I think Bruce Allen is in a wait and see mode. No point in committing to a big money extension if he's not going to hold up. I'm as anxious as everyone to get some stability and talent at QB, that said, McNabb has been streaky his entire career--when he's on he's great, when he's off, well, let's just say, almost no one could do worse. And while he's in good shape, his durability is an issue, and so, quite frankly is Grossman's mot to mention his decision making at times. I'm with Bruce on this one, we have time to see if this is going to work out on a lot of levels, would prefer not to lock into a deal out of desperation and end up regretting it later.

learnedhand1, thanks... I see a lot of new stuff in there. And I do travel a lot, so maybe I would get nixed for other reasons. I thought this is an odd requirement:

Pulse: 80 to 100 beats/min and regular.

I stay in reasonable shape, and my resting pulse is around 55 beats/min. I suspect there are a lot of athletic types with pulse rates below that listed requirement.

Posted by: Alan4 | September 2, 2010 5:11 PM | Report abuse

Alan, I think you are confusing pulse with blood pressure. 80-100 psi is your lower number for normal blood pressure. Pulse is the number of times your heart beats per minute, and resting pulse would be much lower.

fredie-

systolic bp/diastolic bp. The Systolic pressure is when the heart`s ventricles contract and push the blood through the veins. It is called the systole, the pressure during heartbeat action. The Diastolic pressure is the lower pressure that results when air is released out of the cuff and no more sound is heard. This is called the diastole.

The normal blood pressure range of persons aged 20 – 40 years is 120mm Hg systolic pressure and 80mm Hg diastolic pressure.= 120/80mmHg.

So AH took the $21 M when he could have gone elsewhere and now is looking like a strong candidate for the IOTA (Ingrate of the Anus) award and now we come to find that DM let the Skins give up valuable draft picks so he could bust of Philly jail and become a FA at the end of 2010 and give AH a run for his money for the IOTA award. Sheesh.

diesel--

Did you look that stuff up on Wikipedia or did you learn something after you left UMd? I'm impressed and, as you know, I'm not easily impressed.

Okay, Dr. diesel. Let's see how you do with this one. Whenever I drink root beer my root swells up inordinately. I mean, I'm talking like 12 inches over 6 inches. Do you think that because of my systolic pressure or my pulse?

Sorry about the typo. I meant Annus instead of Anus.

I lived in your country of origin in the 80s, you know what part of the island your family is from? Went back there this year--if you haven't been, go. It's awesome.

The fact that I lived elsewhere in Europe in the 80s means that I can't give blood. The pathogens that cause Mad Cow can incubate for 20-30 years before showing any signs or symptoms.

I heard B(m)itch saying he thought Hoosh was a real solid worker and a "good dude", so we should totally trade for Brady and Peyton--and trade them for him.

Normal heart rate is 60-80; there's nothing wrong with 55. It sounds like they'll accept 80-100 BPM...

brownwood26 says there is no way that McNabb would leave DC after one year and go to his 1st choice, be reunited with Childress, play behind the best OL and RB combo in the NFL, and be on a Super Bowl caliber team. We should just stop discussing it so that he can stick his head in the dirt like an ostrich.

Posted by: Diesel44 | September 2, 2010 8:05 PM

If by "stick his head in the dirt like an ostrich" you mean "taking McNabb at his word", then yeah...let me brush my feathers a moment. Dude basically handpicked Washington as his trade destination for cripe's sakes. And if the guy is even half smart, he knows he's better off with Shanahan than Chilly or Whiz. The personnel will come...joining forces with a guy that is from your hometown, already has 2 rings and is thirsty for more is the wise choice.

Posted by: brownwood26 | September 2, 2010 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Ali Al- AH>DM for your Annus Award in a landslide. Until DM is signed to an extension he's a FA and we know given the choice where he would play. He's already said such.

Beep- Your root swells? If it lasts for more than 4 hours, instead of calling your DR, take a walk down sorority row. Or it could be Priapism, which is a rare side effect of a few of the medications that a man of your age takes. You should hope it's not the latter..

I'd like to donate blood too, but they don't want my blood because I live in the District of Columbia.

Posted by: beep-beep | September 2, 2010 4:13 PM

They don't want your blood because you're like 200 years old and would dry up like jerky if they drained any from you.

The rest of you should know his lame MO and stop taking swallowing the bait.

TJ Housh on the trading block? Hmmm, uncapped year? Hmmm, Redskins in desperate need of a wideout? Hmmmm. PFT stating he'd cost 7 mil this yearrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeIIIII don't know.

Posted by: Bigfoot_has_a_posse | September 2, 2010 5:36 PM

For all the same reasons folks up here didn't want TO, I don't want Housh. Dude has a twisted sense of where he is in WR pecking order. All mouth and no game at this phase of his career. I'd seriously rather give up a 1st round pick for VJ and I'm dead set against that. The only thing worse than trading for Housh would be seeing Snyder and Jerrah in a pizza commercial together.

Oh wait...

You're better than this. What is McNabb suppose to say when asked about his intentions? Oh wait, he told Sal Pal that his first choice was Minny. Nevermind.

Truth be told I have us going 8-8 this year and 10-6 next year if McNabb stays. If he goes to Minny next year, he could be looking at 13-3. You do the math.

US the largest "consumer" of chimpanzees (55,000 a year- the attendance at RFK) used for laboratory research...Behind the cloak of vaccines and cures, they are working on more toxic strains of AIDS, Ebola, etc...I know for a fact they are developing "SuperAIDS"- an airborne infective AIDS that everyone can catch..FREE THE APES!!! ANIMAL LIBERATION NOW!! ANIMAL LIBERATION NOW!!

Diesel, I wonder how many offenses DM5 wants to be fluent in over the next 3-5 years? Wouldn't it be in his best interest...

Oh wait, I just killed my own argument. Childress, ex-eagle, how many has Farve had to learn recently, got it.

I just hope he stays is all.

RLB-

I do too. If he leaves then you can add 3 more years to the rebuilding process.

Posted by: Diesel44 | September 2, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Diesel, just because the "in" thing to do in the NBA is having star FAs join forces to chase championships doesn't mean that's reached the NFL. McNabb ain't LeBron. As I said earlier today, if he were to bail after one year to go to Minny or AZ it would be a complete departure from what he's been to this point. Dude was loyal to Philly, almost to a fault. He's got all the reason in the world to pop off on those jerk fans of theirs and he hasn't. You know why? Because dude is first class. That's why I take him at his word and that's why I'm convinced he thinks he's got a shot at winning here. Truth be told, I think he's got just as good a chance here as he does in those other two cities.

Minny's getting older. As is AZ. They're loaded now, but that doesn't mean they will be next year or the year after. I think the Skins will be better than both of those teams next year and beyond if McNabb stays. We've got a better coaching staff and an owner willing to spend whatever it takes. That's a recipe for success if Snyder sticks to signing checks and keeps out of the war room.

So I'm not just blowing sunshine based on wishful thinking. I'm looking beyond 2010, looking at the situation, and looking at the personality of DMac. All of which point to him staying, IMO.

Good night, and HTTR.

Nothing wrong with optimism. I hope you're right. Just sayin that until he's extended, he's a FA at year end.

So we're kind of dating him right now (nothing serious w/o an extension) and at year's end we're in a bar and so are the Vikings. The Skins are a 7 as team and let's say the Vikings are a 10. Let's hope he's either "loyal to a fault" or he's drunk.

Posted by: Diesel44 | September 2, 2010 9:54 PM | Report abuse
