Donovan McNabb stresses importance of Redskins' running game

Running back Clinton Portis is confident the Redskins' unproductive running game will improve.

Quarterback Donovan McNabb seems less certain about the situation.

"Well, I definitely hope so. I definitely hope so," McNabb said. "I know [Rams Coach] Steve [Spagnuolo] will always apply a lot of pressure to the pass game by bringing the safeties and his linebackers. If we can kind of get our running game going this week, which opens up a lot more in the play action game and things of that nature, we have more of a balanced attack.

"I think it will definitely help our cause of obviously winning the game. We are going to work hard out here this week. We are definitely excited about getting out here and erasing everything that has happened in the last two weeks and getting that thing going."

The Redskins need more production in the running game in order for their effective play-action game to remain effective.

"I think it is very important," McNabb said. "I also think you have to continue to stay with it and that is something we have been able to do. If you fade away from a play-action, that is mainly because you haven't been running the ball - some teams do that.

"We continue to stay with it in both games and we have really started to open up our running game more in the fourth quarters. If we can continue to add that with the first second and third quarter, good things will be able to develop, but we have to continue to work at it. We kind of understood what was going on the last two weeks as players and we just have to do it out on the field."

This is clearly a game that we need to "get healthy" on. Nothing short of a 21 point win will cure what ails the Skins this year.

I bet Haynesworth will be picking his azz and nose, with everything hanging out at home on his couch!
Lazy tub of lard, he can't even come to the game and support his team??? I don't know if I've ever heard of that before, usually when a player can't play he is still on the sidelines supporting the team, unless it's a road trip and a guy doesn't make the trip because he is injured. IT WAS A HOME GAME, and he still couldn't show up! I don't expect him in St. Louis this week. The only arch he'll be around is McDonald's.

DOES YOUR CAT MAKE TOO MUCH NOISE?

I'm lucky.

My cat only makes noise after I hit it with a brick.

And then, I have to put up with a sore pussy.

Donovan McNabb stresses importance of Redskins' running game

Thats funny to hear. Didn't he audible out of most of the running plays on sunday?

We need to win and win big run the ball a bunch, Clinton at least 25 carries. And hurt bradford all day, put his arm back in that sling.

Posted by: Stu27 | September 24, 2010 9:04 AM

At the rate he's going, if CP runs 25 times he'll only get 30 yards. This line needs to get it together against the Rams...this isn't exactly a daunting front 7...

Posted by: brownwood26 | September 24, 2010 9:14 AM | Report abuse

it still really grinds my gears that people dont understand what kind of Rb CP is. If you only get the guy the ball 15 times your gonna get nothing. You have to keep feeding it to him well into the mid 20 carries range for him to get his 100 yards. We never gave him the ball more then 20 times last year he sucked, we dont give him the ball more then 15 times this year he will suck. Couple years ago when he was raking up yds we did give him the ball 25+ times. Dude can still wear out a D with his running stlye, we just need to commit to it, and we have not comitted to it. Regardless of who we have on the oline.

If you're gonna get healthy...and rev up that running game...this certainly is the team to do it against. First road game has me a bit concerned.

Are you confusing cause and effect here? When he's capable of gaining 100 yards, we'll give it to him 25 times. So far, he hasn't shown anyone anything. He's just grinding his gears.

Posted by: beep-beep | September 24, 2010 9:26 AM | Report abuse

Stu, as I've said before...CP isn't 100% to blame for the rushing woes, the O-line isn't giving him holes to run through. It's not a coincidence that 3 backs played last week and NONE of them could get a gain. When the lineman open rushing lanes instead of creating a jumbled mass of fat ass at the line of scrimmage, the ground attack will look better--regardless of who's in at RB.

CP has a few things he can no longer do, not near enough speed to do the cutback or go to the outside but he can still hit the A and B gaps okay. Problem with trying to get him 25 carries is NOBODY can take 25 carries through the gut and come out healthy.

Then we need a different starting RB.

We cannot afford to go "all-in" on getting CP on track; feed him the ball 15 times for 2 yards a pop bank on some 4th quarter runs once he gets in rhythm. Because until he "gets it going" we are going to be facing alot of 3rd-longs and 3 and outs. The defense will be spending alot of time on the field, and McNabb - who is a rhythm WCO passer - will not be able to find his groove.

Besides, it's a Gibbsian game plan oriented around the power-run; not a Shanaplan.

The idea was to slim-down Portis and get him back to a different running style.

If we can;t teach the old dog his old tricks again, then get a new dog.

He looked great in the second half of the dallas game when we committed to him for a sec.

And which back in the league beasts out on 15 carries??? No we dont have anyone like that. Cater to your personell and feed him the ball, nothins wrong with CP he got his wrist dinged up. He is fine, the scheme is off.

I agree about AH. Not going to the Texans game really showed what a looser he is. Doesn't care at all about his teamates.

I would be the last person to say we dont ned a new RB, ive been screaming for them in the draft the last few years when some real studs have some out. But were stuck with what weve got. 18 carries for 63 yds against Dallas. Feed him the ball 25 times against the rams and see what you get.

Posted by: Stu27 | September 24, 2010 9:36 AM | Report abuse

Well said, pfunk...I still wanna see what he can do behind a line that actually forms a running lane though. Hopefully, we can see that this week...

Can we PLEASE just have an easy win on Sunday?

Seriously, how many of those have we had in the last 5 years? I can think of like, two. Detroit 34-3 and Dallas 27-6.

My body can't take it if we're going to have 14 more games like the first two this year.

25 carries for Portis is exactly why he looks like he appears to be finished. I'm all for running the ball, but carries need to be split between Portis and Williams.

If they get a sizable lead on the Rams, I'd like to see Williams finish the game with more carries than Portis. Time to see what they really have with Williams.

The running game needs to be worked on. This will be the game to do it?

Posted by: DikShuttle | September 24, 2010 9:51 AM | Report abuse

I can deal with splitting carries, but we need to commit to a running game for us to have one. Next year when we draft Noel Devine then we will have a back that can touch it 10 times and make things happen, until then its a grind out run game for the skins or no run game.

Somebody asked Clinton Portis for his thoughts on the Katy Perry controversy.

CP said he had mixed feelings.

On the one hand, she was clearly "jus axin fo it" by showing up on set dressed as a female. He also wonders if the buxom singer might have been caught "cuttin an eye" at Elmo's package.

He said with all of those furry creatures just hanging around the dressing room, somebody's package was naturally going to appeal to her.

"...25 carries for Portis is exactly..."

25 carries?

Do NFL teams even commit 25 carries to one running back any more?

I'd say the trick is to get a decent enough lead, then use a mix of draws, runs, and screens to control the flow of the game in th third quarter.

That's what teams do today.

I wonder if the running back getting "20 plus carries and 100 yards equaling a win" days are dead in the NFL.

I'd say they are.

You use the run to salt away the win by running down the clock.

I didn't think they'd have a massive letdown like they did against Houston, but it shouldn't be a shock that they'd struggle a little in the first two weeks...

Posted by: brownwood26 | September 24, 2010 9:10 AM

Because it's only week 2, it's possible we don't have the proper perspective on the Texans. In a few weeks, the story of the NFL might be that the Texans offense is special...like "the greatest show on turf" revisited or something. The defense might be good, even better than the good defenses we've seen them field the last several years...they just ran into a juggernaut before we all saw them that way. It's possible anyway.

I am not SURE, but I would guess average 1,200 to 1,500 yards a year for 3 years or so.

His problem wasn't his running it was that he was not as good at the other things a RB has to do. Pass blocking and catching out of the back field.

Posted by: alex35332 | September 24, 2010 10:04 AM | Report abuse

It ain't the cogs, it's the system, in this case.

It's understandable, the frustration. Who wouldn't want to have an RB tearin' it up?

But this line is still figuring things out. When the blocking schemes have worked, there have been big gaines.

Let's not forget that McNabb hasn't really run a running game before, either. His RB has been a scat pretty much exclusively, right? I was cringing watching him trying to dump to the HB. Don't do that! lol. You see Caveman getting outlet receptions now. When have you seen THAT before?

It'll be interesting to see what they come up with... I"m honestly not that optimistic.

Dominique Dawes has cooled off. She's just lukewarm these days...

Remembering how I wished I could smash that when I watched her at the '96 Olympics... But I was only 12 at the time, she was 20.

I tell you what. If they could teach Sellers how to hold on to the ball that will be effective. Not a lot of teams planning for the outlet to the fullback.

Posted by: scampbell1975 | September 24, 2010 10:11 AM | Report abuse

Total agreement on getting more carries to Williams. Everyone's putting a lot of blame on the line and the blocking but Portis is only good for about 2-3 yards per carry at best. I gotta believe Williams at 250 lbs can avg. 4 yards/carry and that's all the Skins need to get McNabb in some more favorable 2nd and 3rd down situations. 10-15 carries a game for Williams would be great and I'm sure Shanny's starting to think about it too.
