Final: Ravens 23, Redskins 3

Updated 10:29 p.m.
After dominating the Buffalo Bills in the preseason opener, the Redskins were handed a 23-3 defeat by the Baltimore Ravens in their second tune-up.

The fourth quarter opened with Albert Haynesworth collecting his first sack of the preseason, dropping Troy Smith for a seven yard loss on first and 10, and Baltimore eventually punted.

The Redskins picked up one first down on their next drive, but then were forced to punt, and Baltimore again moved down the field for a scoring drive.

Troy Smith found Dennis Pitta for 15 yards to start the drive and move the Ravens into Washington territory, and some short runs and passes moved the Ravens to the 14-yard line.

It appeared that Justin Tryon had ended the drive with a nifty strip that caused a fumble recovered by the Redskins, but the officials ruled forward progress had been stopped and the play could not be challenged.

A short pass moved the ball to the Redskins six, but on third down Tryon broke up a pass in the end zone, forcing the Ravens to settle for a 24-yard field goal.

Washington appeared to put itself in position to put points on the board, but instead turned the ball over again.

The drive was sparked by a 37-yard catch and run by tight end Fred Davis, who rumbled down the right sideline to move the Redskins into Ravens territory at the 29 yard line.

Grossman then hit Roydell Williams for 12 yards, and an illegal contact penalty on the next play moved the ball to the 12. After a short run by Ryan Torain, however, Grossman made a mistake.

On second and 8 from the 10, Grossman was pressured by three linemen and rolled to his right. Instead of throwing the ball away, Grossman tried to squeeze in a pass to Keiland Williams and was picked off by Ken Hamlin at the eight-yard line.

Baltimore punted on its next possession and the Redskins took over with 1 minute 37 seconds remaining. Grossman drove Washington deep into Ravens territory in the 2-minute offense, but he fumbled and Baltimore took over to end the game.

Updated 9:42 pm.

After trading punts on the opening two drives, the Ravens put together the most impressive drive of the game: a 14-play, 94-yard march that lasted 8 minutes and 34 seconds and ended with a three-yard touchdown run by Jalen Parmele.

The drive featured dink and dunk passes and short runs, with Parmele and wide receiver David Reed (four receptions) the main contributors. A 24-yard pass to tight end Dennis Pitta also moved the Ravens deep into Redskins territory on the touchdown drive that gave Baltimore a 20-3 lead with 4:04 remaining in the third quarter.

The Redskins responded by driving down the field behind three straight completions from quarterback Rex Grossman.

Grossman hit rookie Brandon Banks for 29 yards over the middle, then Willie Parker for 10 yards on a screen and a quick dump off to Keiland Williams, who ran behind a Devin Thomas block for 23 yards. An incompletion on third and 4 set up a fourth down attempt from the 18, when Jason Phillips charged up the middle untouched to force a Grossman fumble that Phillips recovered.

The quarter ended with Baltimore on its own 48 yard line.

Updated 9:34 p.m.

First-round pick Trent Williams, the starting left tackle, came out of the locker room after halftime with his right arm in a sling, but the team said he had suffered only a bruised elbow.

Updated 9:14 p.m.

Redskins fullback Mike Sellers and safety Kareen Moore both left Saturday night's preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens in the second quarter with knee injuries.

Sellers was blocking for halfback Larry Johnson when he was caught up in traffic and a mass of bodies rolled up on his legs.

Moore suffered a right knee injury later in the quarter when the Ravens ran a fake punt that led to a 51-yard gain by safety Haruki Nakamura. Moore appeared to hurt himself while in pursuit.

Quarterback Donovan McNabb, who played the entire first half and went 10 of 25 for 192 yards with an interception, emerged from the locker room at halftime with his left ankle heavily wrapped.

Updated: 8:55 p.m.

The story of the second quarter was turnovers and trick plays.

The quarter opened with the Ravens driving, for a first down at the Redskins 48-yard line. Flacco hit Le'Ron McClain for an eight-yard pass, and a five-yard penalty on London Fletcher for kicking the football pushed the Ravens to the 35-yard line.

An incomplete pass set up third and 1, and Flacco found Anquan Boldin deep over the middle for 21 yards to the Redskins' 14-yard line. An incompletion was followed by two short passes, including a two-yard completion to Derrick Mason on third and 6 that forced the Ravens to settle for a 26-yard field goal from Billy Cundiff.

The Redskins took over on their own 14-yard line and, after a short run by Larry Johnson, a play on which fullback Mike Sellers injured his left knee, McNabb hit Santana Moss for 23 yards on a crossing pattern.

On the next play, however, McNabb threw his first interception as a Redskin. Again looking for Moss, this time deep down the field, McNabb was picked off by Cary Williams - who returned the ball to the Redskins 38.

Two plays later, however, the Redskins got the ball back when LaRon Landry forced a Donte Stallworth fumble and London Fletcher recovered.

The Redskins punted on their next possession.

Baltimore looked to have stalled on the next drive when Flacco scrambled for five yards before being tackled on a third and 10. Instead, however, the Ravens ran a fake punt with a direct snap to Haruki Nakamura. The safety dashed 51 yards before being taken down at the one-yard line.
One play later, Willis McGahee punched it in to put the Ravens up 10-3 with 5:47 remaining in the half.

The Redskins next drive opened with some promise. McNabb connected with Santana Moss on consecutive plays for gains of 26 and 17 yards, but the drive stalled and Washington punted.

The Ravens moved down the field on their next drive, using a 25-yard pass from backup quarterback Marc Bulger to Stallworth to move into Redskins territory and then picking their way into field goal range to set up a 42-yard field goal from Cundiff that increased the lead to 13-3.

Washington responded with a quick drive down the field in the two-minute offense to set up Graham Gano's 47-yard field goal attempt, but Gano pushed the kick wide right and it remained a 10-point game going into the half.

1st quarter

This week Devin Thomas was not back to receive the opening kickoff. Instead, it was back-up running back Keiland Williams, who took a knee.

But the Redskins didn't take long to start moving the ball down the field, as Donovan McNabb found Santana Moss on third and 6 for a 13-yard gain, and on third and 14, McNabb found tight end Chris Cooley as he scrambled right, throwing off his back foot for a gain of 15.

Facing another third and long, McNabb went deep to Anthony Armstrong, dropping a pass over the middle for a gain of 45 yards to put Washington on the Ravens' seven-yard line. The drive stalled there, however, as Fred Davis dropped a pass in the back of the end zone and McNabb threw behind Armstrong on third down. Graham Gano hit a 25-yard field goal to give the Redskins a 3-0 lead.

The Redskins defense was helped by a penalty on Baltimore's first drive. A false start wiped out a first down conversion and a short pass on third and long forced the Ravens to punt.

Washington went three and out on its next possession and then forced another Ravens punt when Brian Orakpo batted down a Joe Flacco pass attempt. (Earlier in the drive, Rocky McIntosh forced a Ray Rice fumble that was recovered by Anquan Boldin.)

The Redskins were pinned at their own two-yard line after a 42-yard punt and though McNabb found Cooley for an 18-yard gain, they again were forced to punt when Larry Johnson was stopped for a loss of three yards on third and 1.

The quarter ended with Baltimore driving and the Redskins still leading 3-0.

not worried about whether the Skins give up a TD following a fake punt.

As best as i can tell (since I'm listening and doing other things), the things that are most important are fine.

Not worried if McNabb has some issues -- he'll be fine. Seems like Portis is doing OK -- not expecting LJ to be our 2nd RB. Which is fine.

As best as I can tell, our defense is confusing the Ravens. And its much harder to confuse the Ravens than Buffalo.

Anthony Armstrong and Santana Moss are our 2 best receivers.

Cooley and McNabb had some nice early chemistry. Since then, McNabb has been all over the place with his throws.

Oline is having a predictably so-so night against Ravens front 7.

not sure what Shanny was looking for in this game. It was a mixed bag for sure, saw some good things, saw some bad things. Its games like this that make me wish that the NFL let teams play pre-season games outside of their own stadium. code-orange august weather is not good for team health.

Maybe all the team wants to do is get out of the game with no injuries.

And this takes us back to the whole 'preseason' football thingy: folks in the stands pay to see a well-played game.

And all we see is an elevated practice.

Armstrong looks like the real deal, overall I think the defense played better, more like a unit then they did against buffalo. Moss was involved finally. Those were positives.

Never forgetting that seeing failure is just as valuable in the pre-season as seeing success

We have a good gague of what needs to be done with Williams to get him ready against top DE/OLB's. He needs to be given some more work on run blocking against these kind of guys.

I think we saw what can happen with McNabb when we have no run game. He got excited, his footwork fell apart and his throws were off.

Clinton Portis became CLEARLY the starter tonight. He is quick through the hole. He blocks the middle pass rushers well. Although, I now see why we were interested in Brain Westbrook. We need a guy on checkdowns who can catch the ball.

Also, Santana looked great. We finally have a O. Coord. that uses Tana well. However, even though A. Armstrong has looked well. I still want us to pursue V. Jackson...and heavily. I think by week 5, that guy can add something to our offense. Some of those high passes D. Mac throws, will be caught if we had V. Jackson.

Posted by: --swb | August 21, 2010 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Quick impressions:

Love the aggression by Shanahan. McNabb looks like he could be lethal. Fred Davis dropped a TD. Moss, Cooley, Thomas, and a couple others dropped catchable passes. He has his accuracy issues, but he can still throw ropes downfield.

Rogers "dropped" an INT. And by dropped, I mean he laid out in full stretch for an over the shoulder bomb in which he had perfect coverage and couldn't pull in a highlight reel pick. Clearly that means he sucks.

Aside from that, Rogers was flawless.

Hall needs to get in sync with his supporting safety. Too many passes completed to his side of the field. He looks good though making a concerted effort to wrap up in tackling.

Offensive line is struggling in run blocking. They're also having trouble in pass-protection, but a lot of these are a result of the exotic blitzes from Baltimore. Larry Johnson looked AWFUL in pass-pro. TWilliams needs work getting push on the line. Suggs schooled him a couple of times.

Anthony Armstrong looks like the real deal. We may have some young production out of the WR position after all.

Devin Thomas continues to be inconsistent. A dropped pass followed by a great catch. He could end up being a real weapon, but he's got to make sure he's switched on every play.

Despite the score, I see a lot of positives out of this first half. A few missed opportunities by our WRs and TEs turned an explosive passing attack into only 3 points. Should have been much more, IMO. Hopefully these issues get ironed out.

Armstrong definately looks like a keeper. He seems like Moss version 2.0.

I think Austin will be headed to the practice squad. In both games so far, he has come into the game pretty late and not done much. So-so as a returner, not much at all as a WR. If he wants to make the team, he needs to be dominant against the other teams' scrubs. So far I have not seen it.

LJ was worthless. He couldn't run for squat, and his blocking was non-existent.

Fat Albert was pretty darn underwhelming too. He should crush second teamers, but he was getting consistently blocked by a single guy.

==========================================
In high school I used to either grab the running back by the wrist, go to my knees and snatch his arm, that usually jolts the runner instantly. Although once, I pulled the guys arm out of his socket (Felt bad about that).

Our middle linebacker broke a runningback's fore arm when he tried to stiff arm him. He stuck his arm out then our LB with one arm swooped down and with the other swooped up from underneath and the RB's arm was in the middle. I still remember the sound of the pop and crack.

So while yeah, it sucks that a back can stiff arm you in the face, but a defender gets called for a facemask if he does it, but there are workarounds. I seriously doubt though that DH or CR has the heart or pride to do something like that. Personally I'd be embarrassed to get back in the huddle after the stiff arm CR took.

Please don't tell me that you're using Fat Albert's contract as a guide for future contract negotiations. You're starting to sound like Vinny.

I still say no to V. Jackson. Too high of an asking price from both Jackson AND
San Diego.

Johnson should be cut!!!!

Is there any team out there looking for a DE????

4/3 team??

Ship off Carter for a 4/5/6th any of the above

um apparently Haynesworth went off at press conference, skins pr shut it down after 90 seconds...will post various beat writer tweets:

@ RickMaese Haynesworth not happy with Shanahan. I'll share more in a bit. Redskins PR cut Haynesworth off after about 90 secs...

Rich_Campbell

Haynesworth said he believes team withheld true diagnosis this week to make him look bad.

Rich_Campbell

No. He referred that question to Shanahan. Very frustrating. RT @AndrewLiv: @Rich_Campbell Did he say what the true diagnosis was?

john_keim

Albert doesn't talk during week; then gets mad at team for not saying all that was wrong with him. Hmm; how could this have been resolved?

Nice idea, but the problem is that Carter has a no trade clause in his contract. He would have to be convinced that the trade was in his best intrest and to a team where he wants to go. That greatly reduces the number of potential trade partners.

SD asking price is getting lower n lower. The signing of jackson would b my hesitation, but remember, moss is gone next yr, so is CP, both contracts end this yr. We need a building block for our offense. We can front load his pay in the uncapped yer n have him for the next five years

Just my thought

The cleatsworth reference was joke broham. Take a hit

1. Most outstanding things of this game. (a) Shanahan Jr. taking shots down the field and (b) the McNabb-Moss chemical connection. The former has not appeared in Redskins football since before Gibbs v.2. The latter is the future. Toss in Cooley (and DAVIS based on the second half playbook), and some offensive magic is brewing.

2. Larry Johnson will not make the final roster.

3. Anthony Armstrong and Brandon Banks are wearing Skins jerseys in Week One.

4. Laron Landry need to learn how to follow through when he pulls an Albert or Skins are looking at 2-3 more delay of game penalties. Otherwise, heads up play by the strong safety ... would like to hear the story about why Fletcher didn't call a time out.

5. Defensive outstanding plus heads up players of the game. Fletcher, Orakpo, Tryon, Landry, Rogers, Hall, and McIntosh. Plus, some ill-defined presence called the front three on the defense.

6. I agree with Albert. Nose tackle, as a position, is not a good match-up re: his skills, esp. against the running game.

7. Josh Bidwell is Hunter Smith in terms of consistency (but can we connect on the Swinging Door?). Punter controversy solved.

8. Provided that Jammal Brown's hip does not feel worse this Monday compared to last Monday, the Skins offensive line is ready for prime time. Heyer struggled. Whether over Williams, Brown, or Heyer, Terrell Suggs is still Terrell Suggs, and he remains a liability for any team facing him.

9. I'm wondering whether any of this will stick on the wall before I need to cross post the much awaited BlogBoren.

10. I agree with Shanahan on the challenge. The receiver did not have possession. If the offense can challenge a call on the field of "incomplete pass," the defending team should be allowed to challenge the ruling on the field when it is called incomplete pass.

11. Probably obvious, but BS call that Fletcher committed delay of game by the inadvertent heel to the ball that made it roll.

He's suspended for four games, so he not really an option.

X1 = Galloway
Y1 = Moss
TE = Cooley
TE = Davis
Z2 = Armstrong
X2 = Thomas
Y2 = Banks (means Santana can't get hurt)
Z2 = Kelly (assuming he isn't PUPped)

That's it. Five receivers. Two tight ends. Remaining skill positions are the RB/FB/TE slots ... and the numbers there depending the durability and risks of injury on the O-line, esp. Jammal Brown. Artis Hicks is getting it done at RG.

McNabb looked... well, like JC17?

Hmmmmm. I wonder why that could be...

(O Line, you idiot)

So, Portis is better than Johnson and Grossman is better than McHurt, right?

OK, if that's what the stats say, must be true.

Get a clue, people. The O Line is the most important part of any football team. When it fails, the team fails. And that includes the Defense from being on the field too long.

McNabb can't block for himself.

Dude has a bad attitude and the good cop/bad cop routine with Shanahan and Haslett could go either way. I still say Haynesworth doesn't give a sh!t if he plays one down this year for the Redskins.

Posted by: ahwyatt | August 21, 2010 11:50 PM | Report abuse

cL, I watched the game he played. He's embarrassed and he should be.

Larry Johnson will not be a Redskin.

McNabb was outstanding. When the play fell apart, he made stuff happen, esp. Cooley's two (three?) first downs. I heart McNabb. Throwing into double coverage (repeatedly) and CONNECTING ... looked nothing like Jason Campbell (or even the kinds of plays Zorn would even call). There were SO many shots down the field, which was extended SO often. Plus McNabb on the roll out still has the touch.

The offense stalled after Jammal Brown got his allotted snaps. Plus Larry Johnson didn't show up (unlike Portis ... Mr. Two First Downs on # and long).

Blew up schmew up. I repeat my brazen -- Albert plays at least 40 snaps in Week One and has at least a sack or a forced fumble. Unlike the first three guys in this 3-4 (Carriker, I'm looking at you), Albert is a gamer. Golston had a great half.

Big difference between Portis and Johnson running behind the same line. Johnson looked SLOW and is no where near the blocker Portis is. If Johnson looks like this again, I say he's gone.

Speaking of blocking, the interior of our line, especially on the right side, looked unimpressive. Rabach and Hicks need to step it up.

Loved the aggressive pass attack. Armstrong makes this team. DT watches as Armstrong plays in his spot.

K Williams looks too slow to run back kicks. NEXT!

Carter looks too slow and un-athletic to play LB. Why is he out there?

The Ravens where HOLDING like mad out there. Wheere the heck were the refs?

Over-all, I still think they looked pretty good out there. They are gonna be a lot of fun to watch this year. Got some more work to do.

I think there are going to be at least two names on our roster that are not in camp right now. Maybe 3. Watching the wires for RB, RT, OLB.

My two cents:

Donovan's stats are misleading. I though he played pretty well tonight. He was mobile and able to make plays when protection broke down. The problem were the receiver drops. He was too late on the INT, but it is preseason, and all the top QBs have had some blemishes this week.

Santana showed us why he's been the top receiver the past five years. I loved the chemistry with him and Donovan. "Elusive" best describes his style of play. He manages to slip through tight coverage and make plays (e.g. the fantastic double coverage catch).

Anthony Armstrong is a pleasant surprise. He had a second straight solid performance. I expect him suiting up for Dallas.

Did Devin Thomas even suit up tonight?

LJ was not good carrying or blocking. He's washed up. ~Snip~.

I'm still worried about our run defense. Last week, the Bills ran well, and the Ravens had over 100 yards rushing. Isn't the whole point of the 3-4 to stop the run?

Lastly, our ground game needs to be better. We can't work the PA without the run.

nice call, Chicken Little. he'll be back by Week 2. In the meantime, Horton/Doughty should be able to fill the gap. Moore has talent but Horton has more experience, shouldn't be too big a blow.
