Shanahan: 'There's competition' at quarterback behind McNabb

Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post

The Redskins have four quarterbacks in camp, and Donovan McNabb might be the only one who feels any sense of safety.

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan was asked about the battle for the No. 3 quarterback position, but that could be a spot on the depth chart that's irrelevant in September. Shanahan noted that for most of his career, he's only carried two quarterbacks in the regular season, which surely isn't a good news for Colt Brennan. Or Richard Bartel. Or maybe even Rex Grossman.

With his familiarity with Kyle Shanahan's offense, Grossman opens camp as the probable backup to McNabb. Still, Mike Shanahan noted following Saturday morning's practice that "there's competition" behind McNabb.

"We've got four guys right from the beginning who will battle. I like to see guys evaluate themselves each day against our No. 1 guy.

"Obviously that's Donovan," Shanahan said. "They go out there, they've proven themselves. That's what you're looking for: Guys who look at themselves as a No. 1 guy, trying to win that position."

As the other three quarterbacks have shared reps in camp, Shanahan says "they've been doing a good job."

Carrying only two quarterbacks on the roster usually means designating a player from another position as an emergency quarterback (Antwaan Randle El filled this role a year ago, when Jim Zorn opted to carry only Jason Campbell and Todd Collins on his 53-man roster.) Shanahan says he wouldn't try to designate an emergency quarterback until he knows his 53 players.

While Shanahan has historically only gone with two quarterbacks, he does recognize the benefits to having a third, he says, "if you feel that guy deserves to be on your football team."

"No. 1, you never have enough quarterbacks," he said. "If you do lose somebody, it's hard to find a person who can come in, run your system.

"It just takes too long. That's why you try to protect them. That's why you have four guys, sometimes five guys who know your system. Because once you lose a guy or two, regardless how good a quarterback is, it takes time to learn somebody's system."

it's Rex's job to lose...

not sure how you want to interpret that, but sounds like the right thing to say.

I bet the skin's end up with 3qb's! I have a feeling Colt Brennan will end up beating out grossman idk why just a feeling! I think he will step up! Maybe their will end up a 3 way trade with the chargeers and ravens sending Rodgers and maybe a draft pick to the Ravens and VJax and maybe Merriman to the Skins and the Ravens supply the chargers with something just a thought!

yeah, so Colt is gonna leapfrog Bartell and take Rex's job? Not happenin. Funny how it's off with DT11'S and MK12's head when they're hurt or don't produce, but you wanna inexplicably elevate Colt Brennan to the No.2 . Why not the NO.1.. Colts been the backup's backup his whole career, but last season, when he was inactive, i still saw more Colt Brennan jerseys in the stands than Jason campbell jerseys. People love Colt for some reason, maybe the name *btw Rex means King*

Sounds like Shanahan would prefer to keep only 2 QBs and either 4 RBs, 4 TEs, or 6 WRs on the final roster... So Bartel and Brennen really are competing against Grossman to be the #2 QB.

Colt has heart, but I don`t think that is enough. I don`t think they brought Grossman hear just to be a teacher.

Rex has been playing pretty poorly so far into these last three days. He has missed many passes, thrown some interceptions and has not looked like a number #2 QB. I think he is playing the way he has always played-mediocrity is his play. I think Bartel or Colt could beat him out. If he keeps playing the way he has-Shanny will find another veteran QB and than Colt and Bartel will both be out! The only thing so far is that Colt has played the best of the three but McNabb is the guy and will be the guy unless he gets hurt. I must say that McNabb has looked very rusty and has not played up to his level yet.

Anybody named Colt is automatically suspect. His future seems to be w/ a baseball cap and a clipboard. It'll be McNabb, Grossman and Albert Haynesworth as the emergency QB.

The question is why the Eagles let MacNabb go. The obvious answer is that they thought he has become injury prone. If--or when--he goes down, why have the Redskins such a bunch of losers to choose from? Why didn't they seek a decent backup? What an ownerhip!!

I think McNabb will be great, but his age and odometer may make him more injury likely, especially with the OL he'll have, and the fact it's a new system for the team. Why would you only keep two QBs when that position is clearly a critical key to your offense? I'd keep the best three - Grossman because he has NFL experience, Brennan because he has great abilities. Grossman benefited greatly at Florida with fast WRs and a great college coach in Spurrier. Without the speedy WRs Grossman struggles. Keep three QBs - and keep the competition going.

Aside from the fact that there may only be 2 QB's on the roster, I really learned nothing from this article. Are Colt or Bartell stepping up their game? Is Grossman struggling? Is one backup really shining over the others? All, unanswered by this article.
