JaMarcus Russell works out with Redskins

JaMarcus Russell, the embattled former quarterback in Oakland, was at Redskins Park Tuesday morning for a tryout with the Redskins.

Following the Redskins' final practice before players scatter for the bye week, several football players took the field for tryouts, a regular Tuesday occurrence at facilities across the NFL. In Washington, Russell was among the group vying for a job. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan told reporters that the team was working out a couple of other quarterbacks in addition to Russell.

It was not immediately clear the Redskins' exact level of interest in Russell, a former No. 1 overall draft pick who was released in May after three controversy-filled seasons with the Raiders. Coming just two days after Coach Mike Shanahan benched Donovan McNabb in a loss at Detroit, the mere fact that Washington is looking at Russell will certainly spur discussion across the league.

The news was first reported by Fox's Houston affiliate. Marcus had been working out in Houston with former NBA coach John Lucas, according to the report.

The Redskins currently have three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster: McNabb, Rex Grossman and John Beck. Mike Shanahan said on Monday that he hoped all three would be back in Washington in 2011.

Why would a coach ever share anything with the media?

If he doesn't give quotes to the beat reporters they will turn on the coaching staff and print negative stories, (Post has been putting a negative spin on things since Snyder took over)perpetuate their bias, and complain to the league office.

It makes reporters jobs more difficult and when a lousy beat reporter doesn't get something print worthy, we start reading things like, "multiple sources in the building". Understandably they need to protect their sources, but does anyone in that locker room trust a WAPO reporter, after all the negativity they spread? If they do, its a guy like Andre Carter or Fletcher who wouldn't bad mouth a coach/teammate on or off the record.

Read John Keim.

The Next 4 Games:

BYE

Eagles

@ Titans

Vikings

@ Giants

Given the obvious issues facing the offense, this is a tough swing of games.

3 of the listed teams feature solid defensive lines.

Two teams feature Pro Bowl quarterbacks who've won Super Bowls.

There are 2 division foes who will come swinging a mace our way sensing that ours is a team on the brink.

Yes: we know the rebuilding process takes time.

But if we come out of the next month of games 1-3 (that's 4-7), the building won't just take longer, it'll crumble in on itself.

as for the next 4 games, I'd take 2-2 right now. First things first- time to rest and get ready for Philly. Hope the Colts can knock them around this weekend.

The biggest concern and or question moving forward is where do they go from here?
Are they willing to admit their mistake in trying to win now and blow the team up in the off season? That is what should have happened last off season. There are only a handful of players that should be kept and built around. Landry, Orakpo and Twilliams. Some other good role players in Banks and Armstrong. They should entertain the idea of trading Cooley. He is one of the few players with any trade value.

It is going to be two or three long years as they are going to have to find a franchise QB while also trying to fill in a ton of holes. Having those draft picks certainly would have helped. I just hope that Shanahan is not running the draft.

I'm all for giving him more time, but I'm also a realist. His Super Bowl team turned into a consistent 0.500 ball club with a single playoff victory in the decade after Elway left. And he's lying his azz off about the McNabb benching now.

Excuse me if I'm not convinced he's going to make a big difference here.

Posted by: Alan4 | November 2, 2010 11:25 AM | Report abuse

He's already made a difference. We've already won as many games as we did last year. He's already turned our defense into the most turnover forcing unit in the nfl. He's already turned our special teams into one of the most dynamic units in the nfl. He's already drafted a cornerstone left tackle. He's already found young backs to replace portis. He couldn't fix EVERYTHING right away. a complete makeover of the oline was/is necessary and takes time. One bad decision makes the entire fanbase overreact and declare Shanny a bust. This is ridiculous, we're 4-4 right in the thick of the playoff hunt despite a brutal schedule. We've beaten Green Bay, Chicago, Philly, and Dallas. We're 2 and 0 in the division, we're getting healthy and coming back for a stretch run. Everybody calm down and relax, McNabb has been bad for 5 games, he deserved to be benched, I disagree with the timing but I don't hate the decision. McNabb needs to realize his play is hurting the team and he needs to step it up, he also needs to realize there are no sacred cows on this team. Shanny has let that entire locker room know that on the field play matters, not name or contract status. Personally, I find that extremely refreshing after what we've had here for years. I still wouldn't have done it, but I won't discount all the other positives we've got going because of one decision I disagree with, especially when the evidence of the last 4 possessions we had leading up to the decision suggests that it was highly unlikely McNabb was going to drive us down for a winning score.

You're right. But those are usually players at a position of need. Not when you have a 6-time Pro-Bowler as your starter, the "best chance to win in the 2 minute drill" as a backup, and a 3rd stringer you just gave a relatively lucrative contract extension to. Kicking the tires on THE BIGGEST QB BUST IN NFL HISTORY on the heels of the controversial benching of your franchise QB is pretty damn sketchy, wouldn't you say?

Posted by: brownwood26 | November 2, 2010 11:55 AM | Report abuse

Even if he's found a work ethic and changed his attitude, he doesn't really seem to have the skillset for a west coast offense. He's Jason Campbell with a bigger arm.

Question, and I ask this seriously: I'm not African American, so I have no perspective on what I'm about to ask. To the African American RI posters out there, do you think it would make a difference to a guy like JaMarcus Russell to have a strong African American QB role model like McNabb to guide him if he was hypothetically signed here? I realize that every situation is unique, but generally speaking, do you think it would make a positive difference to a guy like JaMarcus? Or is it totally irrelevant?

Back to a running game.

Where else?

The best way to protect the quarterback and use even an ineffective offensive line is to run more than you throw.

And you know like I know McNabb and the Shanahans will move way past the crap the media will feed on for weeks.

So let's all move on.

One thing that got us Sunday was our run-pass mix.

Yeah, I know Torain got hurt, but why did we only have two backs game ready anyways given his injury history?

Let's return to two-tight end, fullback lead, smashmouth football.

The offense's problems might solve themselves from that point.

Total "put up or gtfo" message to McNabb. AND A backup who's big enough to deal w/ the sucky line.

Posted by: skinsfan713 | November 2, 2010 11:54 AM

I would say it's relevant. Because who else is gonna help him? Look who helped Vick......Dungy put his word on the line for Vick, even though he didn't know him before the trouble started. And only John Lucas has been helping JaMarcus.

But, if he joins a team, color shouldn't matter......

Moe, I think we go 2-2 in the 4 games. Two weeks to prepare for the Iggles and if McNabb has any pride left, he should bring his A-game. The Vikes are a train wreck and playing at home we BETTER beat that band of misfits. Loss to TN, loss to the Ginas on the road.

Hopefully, that'll be our last loss of the season...

How many SB did Elway win without Shanny?

Posted by: Flounder21 | November 2, 2010 12:14 PM | Report abuse

First of all, do not expect to hear the truth from Shanny. About anything. Just like Belicheck.
Shanny said on 4 occations he benched Elway for ineffectiveness and put in Kubiak. He needs not to say another word about putting Donovan on the bench for that play. Period.

Donovan should want to play better than he did the other day. I think the O-line was a bigger problem than McNabb, but he should still have made better decisions in the 4th quarter.

They will be a better team if Donovan makes better decisions and does some things better than he has(like getting his feet set more consistantly). He is a great QB but should want to always get better. I don't want to lose someone who I think is the best Redskins QB since Theisman, but only if McNabb is still open to getting better like the rest of the team must be.

Man... Shanahan must be real upset with McNabb, but let's put this in perspective... In the last 2 weeks, McNabb has thrown 3 pick 6's with 2 that didn't happen... our record would be 3-5. Chicago, saved by the delay of game & dude for Lions dropped it with clear path.

I understand the line is atrocious, but he has to be more careful with the football... our defense is our rock in terms of holding teams down & playing to our strength. Our keys to winning are the same every week... Make teams one dimensional with the pass, win the field position battle, and don't turn it over.

First of all, calling McNabb "Campbell with a bigger arm" is laughable. McNabb became a star...wait for it...IN THE WCO. And in a system far more pass-oriented than the one he runs now. The appeal of McNabb was supposed to be how well he'd fit this scheme...even though to date, we haven't really seen that.

To answer your primary question, I'm sure it depends on the player. Vick gives McNabb credit for helping him along in Philly and he might have helped him become the fine player we saw early in the year. The book on Russell is that he has ZERO work ethic and struggles with his weight. The only way you see a Mike Williams-esque comeback is if he learns what it takes to be a pro and if someone he trusts shows him the way. Williams got a chance from his old college coach--and unless Les Miles replaces Shanahan this offseason (boy, would that be a cruel repeat of history) Russell's not getting that assist.

So the short answer is "possible...but not likely".

Perhaps someone who's safely ensconced in the inner circle at Redskin Park could whisper in Shanny's ear that the team already frickin' bottomed out, and that what we need is for him to start the upward climb.

To go from a 4-3 team with stars in its eyes to a 4-4 team that benched its starting QB per dubious (at best) logic, and is now trying out one of the worst QB busts this decade, in just two days is quite an accomplishment.

Swinging gate, take two... and... action!

Yeah, but we could have easily won the Houston game where McNabb played in the zone! In fact the only game we should have lost was the St. Louis game, so the scary thing is that we probably should be 7-1. But then you swing it around and say that we easily could have lost the Cowboy game if it weren't for DHall or Barron, the GreenBay game could have gone different, what if the ref called helmet to helmet contact on Jarmon in overtime? So you could also make a case that we could be 1-7.

That's the crazy thing about the NFL, sometimes the team that wins is not the best team. We are a different team from last year by leaps and bounds simply because we have won some close games and we've been in EVERY game this year, whether we deserved to win or not. That's at least got to make some of us happy, no?

McNabb is the 25th rated passer in the league and threw a killer int with 4 minutes to go and a 5 point lead that a rookie qb shouldn't throw, triple freaking coverage. He has been horrific since the Houston game. If it wasn't for his inability to snap the ball on time he single handily would have lost the Chicago game by completing more TD passes to them then us. Why is he soooooooo untouchable that he is above being benched? He has made a difference with his leadership but I was and I'm sure the Shanny's were expecting better play from him. Unless he dramatically improves he isn't worth the contract he reportedly wants.

Russell is a ginormous bust in draft status and size but he was a consensus #1 pick 3 years ago. Beck has bounced around 3 teams and being Mormon he's already 75 years old I got no problem with them taking a look at a cheap guy who had the talent to be the #1 overall pick.

IMO they are going a different direction next year at QB anyway. They swung and missed on Donovan and it was expensive, but worth the shot. I don't blame them for it at all, and we've seen a lot dumber moves over the last decade then taking a shot at landing a franchise QB for less than a 1st round pick.

I acctually think the Redskins should try to sign Randy Moss for a 1/2 season contract. I know he is a Diva, but Shanahan is the type of coach he needs and we obviously need a big receiver with good hands to complement Santana Moss.

JaMarcus Russell? Are you kidding me?!!! Shanahan has revealed himself to be truly Nixonian. Instead of admitting that he made a ludicrous decision to bring in Rex Grossman, he has continued to prevaricate and dissemble, losing all credibility with the media, the fans and--most importantly--the locker room.

People, people, people. This move makes A LOT of sense. What's Russell now? 260? 280? 310? They'll stick him at the training table and he'll eat everything. Then, when McNabb and Haynesworth show up, they'll be nothing left for them to eat other than vegetables. In other words, it's a great diet plan for those two.

jamarcus russell, if signed, would only be subterfuge to allow the shanahans to start grossman or beck. isn't there some law against nepotism in coaching? guess not, since i recall that marty schottenheimer had his son on staff here, too. ain't that a byatch?

Why would anyone have a problem w/ McNabb not coming back? I mean, I like the fact that we've won a few to this point - but it's not like he's lighting it up....

Posted by: DikShuttle | November 2, 2010 12:24 PM

Because mediocre numbers aside, he's made countless plays to help us win 4 games...and most importantly, he's NOT Rex Grossman.

If the starting QB gig is a toss up between The Human Turnover and a 50/50 chance at Heath Shuler 2.0, I'd much rather take my chances that McNabb plays better in Year 2.

Plus, I'd like to see us get some return on those two draft picks...but that's just me...

@ Skinsfan713. Race is not the issue in this move. Obviously, Russell and Donovan are black QBs but serving as a role model isn't the issue. Michael Vick isn't a good role model but he is a very good quarterback. McNabb is a very good QB and a decent role model. Russell is a bad QB and a bad role model. It would have been nice for Campbell to stay but he had to move on for his own reasons. He got the chance to control his own destiny and did what he did. His job is still not secure even though Oakland 92 points over the last two games.

Donovan McNabb had the support of his teammates. Did anybody else notice Casey Rabach almost crying when he admitted that the o-line did not do their job? Yet McNabb is the one who is on the hot seat.

Mike Shanahan is the one who should be on the hot seat. This is no different than Zorn calling those crazy formations for a fake field goal twice. Absolutely bush league. His body of work is getting more and more tainted. The drawn out drama with Haynesworth was partially AH's fault, but the extent of it was Shanahan. He wouldn't play AH because of his conditioning and now he is saying the same about McNabb. I want to see Shanahan pass some of those conditioning tests and drills.

Shanahan is the problem.

A lot of the reactions to this are absurd. I agree with those who have said that the Skins are rebuilding, particularly on the offensive line, and it will take several years to complete that process.

In the meantime, this season has included some frustrating losses and our schedule has been tough, but what are people reading into Russell trying out for the Skins?

If the team expresses any interest in him, it would be to replace John Beck. McNabb and Grossman are not going anywhere this season. It remains to be seen who the QB will be in a few years when the team will hopefully have a much improved offensive line. It could be the answer is "none of the above."

A lot of people are missing the point here. McNabb's play has been terrible so far this year. If this is how he is going to play, the Redskins would be better off without him next year.

Sure, he has a lot of intangibles, and yes he's had a lot of pressure from pass rushers, but with the kind of bad decisions he's been making you can't win consistently.

Shanahan is basically just telling him to shape up or ship out.

I havent lived in the DMV for a couple years but growing up I didnt realize there were so many idiots in the region. Even my friends that refuse to leave little Mexico are becoming retarded. We were 4-12 last year with a QB who checked down to the back after his first read wasnt open. The day a Jason Campbell led team makes the playoffs is the day I start rooting for the Cowboys. McFadden and that D are whats making the Raiders look good right now. Campbell is still doing his same ole BS. With all of Donovan's faults he's still a better option that what 20 other teams have at the position. He leads the league in plays over 50 yards, he escapes most of the 30+ QB pressures a game. We have been bottom feeders for how long? You people want to complain about a guy who has zero time to look past his first read and has single handedly won 2 games already this year? How many games did Jason Campbell put the team on his back and win a game for us? You really think Kyle Shananhan is the problem? He cant call plays? A weak OL and no run game and the guy who is probably one of the best young offensive minds in football needs to be fired? Its sad that you people feel an entitlement to automaticly being good after a decade of garbage.

Yeah, I'm siding with Shanny also. My point is if he had multiple reasons to why he benched McNabb, then he should have said them all at once, not a different one each day, that does make him look 2-faced and a liar.

I saw reports all last week about how McNabb was limited in practice, and maybe that's why he didn't look as good because he was still injured.

As far as getting his 'feelings hurt', this isn't a tea party, this is football. The dude shouldn't get his feelings hurt, it's not like this is the first time he's been benched anyway. He usually responds well when benched, so I just think people need to RELAX AND SHUT THE F UP, just let the season play out. Shanny is in charge, so just let him do his job. Arm-chair coaches are NERDS!

I predict they will not sign Jamarcus Russell.

They would have traded for him, even knowing he was going to be cut (see, e.g. Erasmus James traded a 7th round pick).

It would not surprise me if they signed him, just that usually they have to also destroy our future drafts to go along with moronic personnel decisions.

Posted by: Diesel44 | November 2, 2010 1:17 PM | Report abuse

If this McNabb thing wasn't going on, Jamarcus Russell coming in wouldn't be news. Does anyone think Russell, if signed, would be starting in two weeks? No. They are just checking out the guy. Maybe he has lost some weight and matured a little. If the team signed him to the practice squad - could they do that? - then what would it hurt? Maybe they cut Rob Jackson off the practice squad and sign Russell. Does that fill anyone's heart with dread? The guy was a former first round draft pick. There are riskier things to do than have the guy stick around through some practices to see if he has anything left. Personally, I like it. I'm glad Bruce Allen is still auditioning players. Maybe there is a diamond in the rough out there - or, in Russell's case, maybe there's such a thing as second chances...

Please tell me this was a late "trick" for Holloween, or an early April Fools joke. Why would you workout J. Russell or ever play Rex Grossman. There's enough game film of both of them to know they cannot play in the NFL. Both Shanahans are a complete joke. When will this organization learn that they just need to start over with a fresh coach and players. Enough of the retreads already!!!!!

Errata:

this Russell thing makes me want to read that book "The Wisdom of Crowds" (havent read it yet). Signing him would make me lose some faith.

I personally think that Shanahan(s) should get the time and the freedom to make moves and mistakes. Already some good finds.. banks, armstrong.

For some reason, I dont feel the same way about Haslet though. All the scheming does not appear sound when I watch it play out on TV.

We gave Gibbs a crappy year. Shanahan gets at least one too (and this -compared to last year- isnt abysmal).

Finally, I am wondering if all the turnovers this year is just a statistical evening out after a several year turnover drought..

If we were 8-0 I have a feeling that this would still be a big complaint fest. The Skins are 4-4 and we all wish they were 5-3. For the way that the Skins have played through 8 games 4 and 4 is probably pretty good. We are hardly the laughing stock of the NFL and we are far from being out of it. Shanny is trying to get DMac on track. So far this years he has been far from it. If Shanny succeeds we will end up with a respectable record, if not then we are a .500 team at best. DMac will be the QB, Grossman will be the backup, and Russell is on a plane to the next stop and he won't be back. Reid has kept the Eagles near the top for quite a while. Not from making dumb player moves, so he probably had a feeling about DMac. Hopefully they were wrong and we were right and he has a little left in the tank.

Mike will be fine. He has to put his stamp on this team. Why are you all surprised? If he doesn't, he loses the team. The other 51 players have to know that they must practice and play hard. No matter who they are.

Hopefully DM will pull up his sucks, get healthy, and learn this offence. Hopefully the Oline issues will get addressed. The D and special teams keep doing their bit and we have a good chance of upsetting a lot of people.

Relax. Sit back. Enjoy the ride. Do not overreact to a simple benching of a QB. It's up to DM where things go from here for him.

I'd rather hear the Skins had brought in a bunch of linemen to workout. I can't believe there are no linemen on practice squads, undrafted, etc. that can't help this team just a bit more that the likes of JRussell at the QB position. While the play of D5 is fair discussion, the child-like lying, ala John Lovitz, by Coach S was nothing less than insulting to D5, the team, and the Skins Fans.

Jason Campbell looks like Joe Montana compared to this guy (J Russell).

Nothing like the power of low expectations, I'd say.

We got McNabb and though, "Championship!"

Raiders' fans got Campbell and thought, "Third place!"

This is a soap opera better even than that program "Players" that ran on ESPN a few years ago about a disfunctional football team. Too bad ESPN killed that show to kiss butt with the NFL to broadcat football games, as it got great ratings....Manical coaches, washed up vets, teed off equipment managers, a golden boy QB, crazy and hated owner, roids, whizenators, drug free pee....it was a great show. But the "Skins are even better and more pathetic than a fictional team.....

Next thing you know, Shanahan will:

• Give a multi-year contract to an overrated RB he plans to cut a few weeks into the season
• Bench the starting "franchise" QB for whom he gave two picks to A DIVISION RIVAL
• Backtrack from his "best chance to win" BS and play the "cardiovascular fitness" card about one of the hardest workers on the team
• Cut a young, big WR but keep a 38-year-old guy who will be retired (at least) when this team is competitive again
• Stock the backfield with no-name RBs in the hopes of reaffirming his reputation (at least to himself) as a genius by backing into another Terrell Davis
• Hold his most talented defensive player out of practice while humiliating him with a series of public fitness tests, only to stick him back on the roster after the player maybe passed, maybe didn't ... and then refuse to trade the malcontent in a power play move to show who's in charge

Oh, wait .... he already has done all of those things. It's hard to believe anyone would question Shanahan's "genius" way of doing things. What a winner.

DC brinngs in JR after benching McNab.....

I'm just say'in

OBTW - Jim Plunkett, Ken Stabler and D.Lamonica are still available and better suited to our system than JR

Bring in Russ Grim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is Sonny still available??????????????

A few bounces that could have gone the other way and we win and are at 5-3 at the break and all is good. Danny GET A GRIP!!!

The fix will take three years (2.5 to go)

Mike will be fine. He has to put his stamp on this team. Why are you all surprised? If he doesn't, he loses the team. The other 51 players have to know that they must practice and play hard. No matter who they are.

Hopefully DM will pull up his sucks, get healthy, and learn this offence. Hopefully the Oline issues will get addressed. The D and special teams keep doing their bit and we have a good chance of upsetting a lot of people.

Relax. Sit back. Enjoy the ride. Do not overreact to a simple benching of a QB. It's up to DM where things go from here for him.

OK so atleast 3 non raving, the worlds blowing up, its been 8 games fire the whole staff insane posters on RI today. Thank you monk811 and tony 325!

Did you really expect 11 - 5 and no my way or the highway thos year? You can't build a program in one year when you start with trash. You try an find a few hidden gems--Banks, Armstrong, carriker, ATV---and make sure the others implement and follow your system. When they don't ---DT, AH, MC5--you get your point across one way or another. As fans we will nto agree with all decisions (benching MC5) but can we atleast not burn the building when the foundation isnt completed yet? IMO--all 8 games have been entertaining, could have won them all expcet one and we matter in the NFC playoff race right now. What a HUGE improvement over the past 5 years. I'm not counting 2007 when the loss of a superstar to be focused the Skins mentally to drive to the playoffs. RIP ST!

This is pure insanity. Russell couldn't help Oakland because of his poor work ethic. I don't believe he can run an offense except to take them to the snack bar. Same thing I said about Campbell, if you give McNabb some time to pass, the games will go better for us! Sure some throws will be off, but I think he's our best bet right now. I sure am glad to be actually BELIEVING we can win games now instead of groaning about how bad we'll lose.

Posted by: merrittwj | November 2, 2010 4:38 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: skinsfan713 | November 2, 2010 11:54 AM

Though I think we're just kicking the tires on Russell, I would say the answer to your question is yes. Strangely, the Redskins have the right mix for Russell to turn into a reclamation project.

McNabb, a veteran, overscrutinized AA QB who generally acts as the big brother to younger AA QBs.
Shanahan, a ruthless martinet-who if Russell is overweight-would work his ass to death. One thing that Russell would not be here is lazy and unmotivated-that's for damn sure.

Posted by: ArmchairGM | November 2, 2010 4:48 PM | Report abuse

I acctually think the Redskins should try to sign Randy Moss for a 1/2 season contract. I know he is a Diva, but Shanahan is the type of coach he needs and we obviously need a big receiver with good hands to complement Santana Moss.

Ya' know, I wonder if famous males know how much they're being insulted when being called a Diva, particularly since a male one is actually called a DIVO, not a DIVA.

Why not? Jeff George isn't playing any more. Leadership is over-rated. We gave up two high draft picks for a one year rental (McNabb), and another for an offensive lineman without a hip. Might as well bring in JaMarcus Russell, let him sling the ball to Randy Moss, and let Haynesworth be the locker room leader. The more things change under $nyder, the more they remain the $ame. Any way we can give up draft picks while we're picking up Moss and Russell?

Let me see, among the many criticisms that Daddy Shanny and Boy have leveled at Donovan is that they don't like his practice work ethic.

So they try out JaMarcus Russell?

"McNabb is the 25th rated passer in the league and threw a killer int with 4 minutes to go and a 5 point lead that a rookie qb shouldn't throw, triple freaking coverage. Unless he dramatically improves he isn't worth the contract he reportedly wants.

that is 100%.

his performance has been poor, and he deserves to be benched. 4 - 4 and if we didn't have a strong D we'd be 2 - 6 for sure.

I've always been concerned about McNabb's scary-low Wonderlic score. the evidence of that lack comes out all too often IMO.
