McNabb is gonna train like it's 1999

Two days before the Redskins begin training camp, quarterback Donovan McNabb says he's not concerned about his contract and says he hasn't felt similar anticipation for a camp since his rookie season in 1999.

"There's definitely an excitement. There's a vibe that's going on right now," McNabb said. "It's not just at Redskins Park. It's in the D.C. area. I think everyone is anticipating this year and the kickoff. Everybody is looking forward to great things happening, and the team is looking for great things to happen."

McNabb appeared at a Borders bookstore in Washington for a half hour Tuesday afternoon to sign copies of "NFL Dads Dedicated to Daughters: Inspiring Personal Accounts on Fatherhood." He spoke briefly with reporters prior to meeting a long line of fans.

He touched on a few other topics. Among them:

His contract, which runs out at the end of this season. Both sides have expressed interest in an extension that would keep McNabb in burgundy and gold for several more years: "We look forward to being able to sit down and talk about that. That will happen, maybe sooner than later. The thing about it is, at this particular point, I truly don't focus on it. ...For me, it's just focusing in on the field and getting these guys ready..."

"I've never been in that situation before. For me to sit here and say it's not tough, it's a tough answer to give. But I'll try. Put it that way, I'll try. The thing about it, again, it's me stepping out on the field. A new chapter in my book, new situation, new challenge. I look forward to it."

On "Hell Week" last week with fellow offensive teammates: "It was truly big for us. It was something that we'll benefit from, I think, toward mid-season, toward the end of the year. I think for us coming into camp having an upper-hand a little bit."

On texting Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb: "I try to inspire young players, to just continue to keep their head up, write goals for yourself that are attainable and for them to just have confidence in themselves. For me, it could've been easier for me to walk out the door and not said anything to anyone. But that's not the type of person I am. I'm a guy who cares. I've text-messaged Kevin and...several of my former offensive linemen and the list goes. The thing about 11 years is [it's] something you can't just forget."

"I still think that Fat Albert will be gone before the start of the regular season."

And in all actuality, the possible arrival of Prince Al is the most singularly compelling story going into redskin camp.

If he shows up fit and ready to go, folks will howl.

If he doesn't show up, folks will howl.

If he shows up outta shape and surly, folks will howl.

Either way, whatever he does/doesn't do come the morning of the 29th will have this place jumpin' like fish frying in some Crisco.

Trent Williams joins Dez Bryant as the only first round draft picks to have signed contracts so far this year. While details have yet to emerge, we're anticipating something in the 5 year range, with 35-40 million guaranteed. Stay tuned as more details emerge..

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | July 27, 2010 3:38 PM | Report abuse

Thoughts on previous posts:

1) Trent Williams is a young LT...he's gonna get beat, but he was the #4 pick in the draft and the self-proclaimed "Silverback"...play em! He'll be fne!

2) I think Davis will be better than Cooley, but that's a good thing. (seems like yesterday when people were clamoring for him to be cut)

3) Enough of the Jason Campbell sob stories. I wanted him to succeed but maybe since Oakland is a 3 hour time difference we won't know that he held the ball too long!

4) McNabb is enjoying the love he never got in Philly.

5) Beating Dallas on opening day would be HUGE since their name has already been engraved on the Lombardi trophy.

TWISI re: Dline on final roster

Carter and Jarmon are both LBs in the 3-4. That makes your math much easier.

Posted by: ELWOOD-BLUES | July 27, 2010 3:43 PM | Report abuse

It wouldn't make sense for TW to have signed. The other players around his draft slot have not sigend. His agent is also Sam Bradfords agent. None of the dominoes around him have fallen yet. These things always happen in succession.

Posted by: Stu27 | July 27, 2010 3:47 PM | Report abuse

How many DLmen will be on the team. IMO maybe 7 more likely 6. IF AH stays we have

AH
MK
ACar

starting. Then either Green or Bryant would be the "backup" NT. That leaves two spots for Golston, Daniels, Jarmon, Holiday, Scott to fight it out.

Posted by: TWISI | July 27, 2010 3:10 PM
My predictions for the six:
NT: Kemoeatu, Bryant
DE: Jarmon, Daniels, Goldston, and Holiday

I dont think that Carter will count as one of the DE's because I think he will spend more time at LB, only switching to DE in obvious passing situations. I also predict that Jarmon will be a starter at DE.

Posted by: kaasmaster | July 27, 2010 3:48 PM | Report abuse

I was skeptical about signing McNabb, and I still think his season-long health is a big question mark, but I do love the leadership and sense of ownership at the QB position. It's the big missing element that I kept hoping Campbell would develop.

Jarmin's injury last season means one of two things:
1) he understands what it will take to make it in this league and he's worked hard to get back and stay.

or

2)he'll be just another journey man NFL'er oft injured and not reliable for the entire season.

Posted by: Rando | July 27, 2010 3:53 PM | Report abuse

freakzilla,
I like most, if not all the guys Shanahan has signed. I'm just not sold on any lasting 16 games. regular season games. Plus playoffs. PLAYOFFS, PLAYOFFS, PLAYOFFS are you kidding me.

Here is some more relevant Training Camp issues.

My protege whose name begins with an F and ends with a K will soon be here to confirm...

The Federal Reserve Bank is not a U.S. Government agency, but rather a privately owned and operated bank; whose owners are mostly international bankers. This entity has financial control of the nation with the power to manipulate the worlds markets as they see fit.

THE FEDERAL RESERVE FRAUD
http://www.pushhamburger.com/fed__fraud.…

The Great depression was planned by the Fed's as is the coming CRASH. The same steps the Federal Reserve Bank took to crash the market in the late 20's, it has repeated again: namely the creation of EASY credit to one and all, even if they can't possibly pay it back. This is their way of "Cashing In" on their financial pyramid scam, while impoverishing the masses. The move also creates a great economic crises enabling them to further their agendas unrestricted.

CFR - The Secret Government

JFK, was not killed by a lone gunman, but rather by a team of riflemen. He was in the process of doing away with the Federal Reserve Bank in favor of a national bank and currency. He was also planning to announce to the world the existence of E.T.'s (multidimensional beings), and expose a government cover up. Under Pres. Eisenhower, the U.S. government entered into a "Treaty" with a race of aliens. A treaty whereby the U.S. agreed to allow genetic experimentation of people in exchange for advanced weapons and propulsion technology. The treaty broke down, but the genetic experiments continue unregulated by humanity.

9/11 was an inside job, by the NeoCons, who took control of the White House, in order to create a reason to invade Afghanistan and Iraq; two strategically oil rich nations. A commodity that can be used to control the world.

In late 2012, we are due to complete a 5,125 year cycle and enter into a New Age. At the completion of each previous cycles, great natural disasters occurred (Noah's flood, Sinking of Atlantis); the same can be expected this time around. The public is not being informed so as to create as much carnage as possible. This will enable the remaining survivors to be more easily controlled and brought into bondage under a one world government.

Posted by: pabrian2003 | July 27, 2010 4:28 PM

Here's how:
1.)Bidwell is an experienced veteran punter. We know he probably won't be anything special, but we also know that he is not likely to screw up.

2.) With the KR and PR duties, at least there are a good number of players auditioning for the part. Stands to reason that at least one of them will do at least an acceptable job. As far as punt returns go, as long as we have someone who knows that you're supposed to run towards the end zone rather than the sideline, they can't possibly be worse than ARE.

3.) We have ONE unproven kicker with no one to compete against him. Sure he kicks the ball far on kickoffs, but field goals, especially in pressure situations, are the real measure of a kicker. Untill he proves that he can make those field goals, then it is a no brainer that he is the player for the special teams who deserves the MOST concern. That was the question. Who concerns you MOST.

Outside of this power struggle between Haynesworth and the coaches, I don't see why he can't play over the nose on passing downs and on either side of the line the rest of the time. If I was a center, I'd have nightmares about seeing that guy line up off my shoulder. It would actually be an advantage for Albert in terms of collapsing the pocket. Except for the addition of time at the nose, it's the way d-coordinators have used the great pass rusher from the time of Reggie White and Lawrence Taylor.

I mean, third and three is now a passing down 80% of the time, so what does that tell us? Albert never got many sacks in the first place. And he never plays more than half the snaps, right?

Of course, it makes too much sense to happen.

"Outside of this power struggle between Haynesworth and the coaches, I don't see why he can't play over the nose on passing downs and on either side of the line the rest of the time. If I was a center, I'd have nightmares about seeing that guy line up off my shoulder. It would actually be an advantage for Albert in terms of collapsing the pocket. Except for the addition of time at the nose, it's the way d-coordinators have used the great pass rusher from the time of Reggie White and Lawrence Taylor."

"So just a hunch on Suh? What's the rationale?"

I'd say that the average NFL starting center and guard is leap years better than anyone Suh faced in the Big 12.

Look at tape of Glenn Dorsey while he was at LSU, and he looked just as dominate as Suh did at Nebraska.

Subsequently, Dorsey has been a middlin' d-lineman for the chiefs.

I have the same thoughts about the Bucs' Gerald McCoy.

NFL interior lineman are very, very good.

What I would do is draft a defensive end--he'll be a better athlete--who can move into the tackle position rather than draft a big defensive tackle.

I like Justin Tuck-Jay Ratliff-Albet Haynesworth types over squat 6'2" 330 bowling balls.

And I have nothing against those kids, just an unprofessional hunch.

That wasn't Roger Waters. When Pink Floyd was recording Dark Side of the Moon, they had a series of questions that thay asked to almost everybody who came into the recording studio, and recorded their answers. Mostly roadies, studio engineers, music industry scmoes, even Paul McCartney (although they didn't use any of his answers because his voice was too recognizable). That quote came from one of those interviews, as did all of the other spoken quotes on the album.

After reading Sally Jenkins article on the NT position, I can see why a selfish player like Albert doesn't want to play the NT spot. There's very little glory in it.

But I'm not sure NT is a good fit for Albert, either.

Me, I've said I'd like to see a lean, mean nasty Albert playing for us. Don't care if he's happy. I'd like to see him and Orakpo lined up next to each other a lot -- but that'd mean a 4-3. It'd be a huge problem for most OLs, including ALL of the ones in our division.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | July 27, 2010 5:48 PM | Report abuse

If Maaku is healthy, why not Big Al on one end (spelled by Jarmon and Daniels) and Orakpo on the other?? Both sides of the ball look much improved on the line than last year (on paper)...

The single wing formation should be very interesting..

McCartney has turned into a world class narcissist and all around d-bag turd. He refused to play a series of concerts unless every piece of meat was removed from the premises. Paul was definitely the softer one, not to mention a distant fourth among that group in the ranking in order of how much you'd like to party with them, but doggone it he was a hell of a pop songwriter. I had a buddy who kept encouraging me to really listen to his stuff and I -- a diehard Lennon partisan -- finally, begrudgingly, admitted the man had some terrific chops.

Anyway, apparently the northerners like to call people with "Mac" and "Mc" surnames "Macca." So that's probably how the Liverpudlian chapter of Redskin fans refer to our new quarterback when they get together and hoist what are hopefully Imperial pints.

One of the best of the 8000 Beatle books was penned by the engineer for almost all beatle stuff. This is the guy who worked with a two track machine and made magic with it. Nifty inside stuff.

What was most fascinating is that according to him Harrison was not the world's greatest guiotarist and sometimes could not get a riff right. So McCartney would play it. Sir George helped a little.

I often wonder why and how certain people are great writing Music. I interviewed many songwriters, and it seemed about even between those who had to work at their songs like a cabinetmaker, and those who "received" them from some kind of strange beyond of unconscious.

How else to explain the sophistication and genius of Lennon/McCartney, and how it sprung from their background.

Paul Simon, I get. The classically trained musicians are explainable. Many of the earliest R&R writers are similar to Macca, having come from poverty. Take Chuck Berry. (Yeah, I'm old).

His lyrics flowed like a waterfall, and he mostly wrote about three things, cars, dancing and teenage romance.

He was poor yet he came up with phrases like "Cest la vie say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell" (used in Pulp Fiction) and was well ahead of rap doggeral with songs like "Too much Monkey Business."

So was Buddy Holly.

"Drunk man
Street car
Foot slipped
There you are"

You may have heard of Berry songs like "Sweet little Sixteen" and "Johnny B. Goode." He's rightly credited with his guitar riffs, but under appreciated as a songwriter.

Beatles were influenced by many including Lonnie Donegan and other Skifflers, Buddy Holly, and Berry (Rock n' Roll music)

The funny thing about Prince--and a sadder comment about today's 'music'--is that most kids today think you're lying when you point out that he played, wrote, and sang just about everything you hear on his early albums.

And then they believe the lie is even more outrageous when you remind them that he was in his late teens/early twenties when his best stuff was produced.

What I fear is, where will music come from when no one plays instruments anymore?

'Cuz that's where we're headed.

That's even sillier than your last remark. I wasn't making fun of the injury, just noting that he can't travel. As far as career-ending, it's a little early to predict that.

McNabb "looking for great things to happen"

Two days before the Redskins begin training camp, quarterback Donovan McNabb says "the team is looking for great things to happen" this season. McNabb spoke to reporters at a book signing in downtown Washington.

Now, you can do what most do around here and just take it and then join in the group discussions on the Skins and realize that most of us up here have common ground, or you can do what a few do which is keep attacking people for no good reason and catch a bunch of sh!t eventually getting the ITA Take it as good as you give it and move on. I don't know about you guys but I think D McNabb has a chip on his shoulder this season. Anyone think he's got the games with Philly circled on his calendar?

As for conspiracy theory rants: the US gov't can't keep secrets about water boarding, shenanigans in Afghanistan, and tax evasion by half of the cabinet. Do you honestly think they could have kept things like men landing on the moon and the second gunman in the Kennedy assassination secret?

As for McCartney - he's a pop star, not the Dali Llama, for Pete's sake. If he doesn't want meat around him write it off as one of those silly quirks that pop stars have like Britney Spears going undie-less. Don't we really make a mistake by assuming just because someone is a good sing/songwriter, this somehow puts them on a pedestal where they are supposed to be above all of the lunacy that goes on in the world? He's just another twisted human being, folks. Move along.

I think the point was that I don't agree with him because HE was putting HIMSELF on a pedestal by thinking he should be allowed to dictate to ANYONE what they should and should not eat. Being above lunacy is another story, this is about thinking your above everyone around you and know better than they do what is best for them. And this is now getting dangerously close to a political rant so I'm going to wrap it up.

Not sure why...if AB were worth mentioning, the Bengals wouldn't roll the dice on TO.

The Ochocinco/TO combo should be a good one though. I don't see how anyone can continue to pick the Ravens to win that division when the Bengals have only added to a team that won that division last season.

Now that TO is off the market (and after seeing him on NFL Live yesterday, it looks like Shanahan ruled him out long ago anyway), I wonder where the Redskins turn to if Devin Thomas isn't getting it done or (heaven forbid) we get an injury or two at WR. Gotta think that VJax trade talks would be back on...

We are all entitled to our opinions. In my opinion, the only reason anyone even knows the stones exist is because most of them are still alive and playing the same damn songs.

Beatles had way more talent. Want proof- Johns been dead for 30 years and we still hear their stuff on the radio CONSTANTLY

Posted by: alex35332 | July 28, 2010 8:57 AM | Report abuse

agree with Alex - there was the Beatles and then everyone else. Anyone who has listened to any of the early Stones albums would realize that they were rank amateurs compared to the Beatles (nevermind that they were going nowhere fast until George Harrison pitched them to the guy at Decca who passed on taking the Beatles).

weird how folks like to deify Lennon at the expense of McCartney in hindsight. Wonder how they would have felt about him if they were alive and aware during the bed-ins, divorce and horrendous public performances with Yoko caterwauling endlessly (see the Stones "Rock-N-Roll Circus"). Am old enough to remember that yes, George Harrison was the biggest celebrity in the world in 1971 with the year's best album and two of the top three singles of the year (prior to the lawsuit...he definitely was the Dave Grohl of the band - who knew he had it in him?).

In any list of the the best albums of all time, you can count on at least 5 from the Beatles. And Metallica over the course of 20+ years has never released anything that could touch Nirvana's Nevermind or In Utero. At least they didn't wear spandex (oh wait, Hetfield used to wear spandex) or go crazy with the hairspray (uhhh, a few pix from the 80s would counter that).

Then again, a lot of folks would tell you the only band that ever really mattered was the Clash; it might be an age thing.

Regards -

-hgr
