Redskins hang on to defeat Eagles, 17-12
Updated: 7:45 p.m.
Fourth Quarter
Coming off of an awful loss to the lowly St. Louis Rams, the Redskins responded Sunday with a huge division road win in quarterback Donovan McNabb's return to Philadelphia.
After an efficient first half, the Redskins did just enough in the second half to give McNabb a 17-12 win in his first game against his former team.
The offense struggled in the final quarters but Washington held on with a late defensive stand.
The Redskins went three and out on their first drive of the quarter and then managed six plays on the next drive before punting again.
The Eagles scored their only touchdown of the game late in the quarter. Taking over on its own 35-yard line, Philadelphia started to pick its way down the field with short passes from Kolb. The long drive was capped by a five-yard touchdown pass from Kolb to tight end Brent Celek that brought the Eagles within 17-12. Kolb was not able to complete a pass on a two-point conversion try and Washington maintained its five-point lead.
Needing a drive that would wind down the remainder of the clock, the Redskins twice handed the ball to Torain and set up a crucial third and 4. McNabb scrambled 18 yards for a first down - though he ran out of bounds, which stopped the clock and cost the Redskins a crucial 40 seconds.
Torain picked up another first down two plays later and then seven more yards to set up second and 3 at the 40. Stephon Heyer jumped offsides for a false start penalty pushing the Redskins back five yards, the penalty proved even more crucial as the Redskins were eventually forced to punt with 1 minute 14 seconds remaining on the clock.
Carlos Rogers dropped a sure interception on first down that would have ended the game, and the Eagles stayed alive. On second down Kolb hit DeSean Jackson for nine yards and on third and one he found Celek for 10 yards and a first down before spiking the ball with 30 seconds remaining. A defensive holding penalty against Buchanon gave the Eagles first down at the 50 yard line with 26 seconds remaining.
The Eagles kept things alive on fourth down with a lateral play that gave them a first down. But on the final play of the game, a Hail Mary pass, Eagles WR Jason Avant appeared to lose control of the ball as he was coming down with it in the end zone, and DeAngelo Hall intercepted it to give Washington its second victory.

Third Quarter
The Redskins opened the half with the ball and an opportunity to immediately increase their lead, but could not take advantage of two Philadelphia penalties and went into the fourth quarter with the score still 17-6.
The Redskins were stopped twice on third down but the drive was extended by Eagles' penalties - the first for roughing the passer and the second for illegal contact.
But with a first down on the Philadelphia 36-yard line, McNabb threw an interception to free safety Nate Allen and the Eagles took over on their own 23.
Three consecutive incompletions led to a Philadelphia punt.
When they got the ball back, the Eagles drove into Redskins territory behind a 15-yard pass to Jeremy Maclin and an 18-yard pass to Owen Schmitt. On third and 7, Kolb connected with Brent Celek for 12 yards and the Eagles looked to be on their way to the red zone. But on first down from the 26, LeSean McCoy fumbled on a Chris Wilson hit and Kareem Moore recovered.
The Redskins couldn't capitalize on the turnover and punted, but the Eagles drive - and the third quarter - ended when Andre Carter hit Kolb and forced a fumble. The Eagles recovered and were set to punt as the quarter expired.

Second Quarter:
Eagles kicker David Akers hit a 49-yard field goal on the opening play of the second quarter, but the Redskins answered right back with a scoring drive.
McNabb hit Cooley for a 12-yard gain on the first play of the drive, and after an incompletion and a five-yard loss, McNabb aired it out and hit a wide-open Anthony Armstrong down the right sideline. Armstrong lost his balance after making the catch turning a possible touchdown into a 57-yard gain.
Seven points ended up as just three, howerver, when the Redskins could not punch the ball into the end zone. A 12-yard pass to Portis moved Washington to the three-yard line, but a holding call on Stephon Heyer pushed them back and they eventually settled for a 26-yard field goal from Graham Gano and a 17-3 lead.
The Eagles took over with Kevin Kolb at quarterback for the injured Michael Vick and immediately put together a lengthy, clock-eating drive.
Facing a third and 10 early in the drive, Kolb found Jason Avant for 17-yards across the middle, with Rocky McIntosh trailing in coverage. A pass to Owen Schmitt went for 12 yards, and on second and 18 after a holding penalty, Kolb found LeSean McCoy for 17 yards. Another screen to McCoy went for 13 yards, and two four-yard gains set up a third and 2 at the two minute warning. McCoy rushed for nine yards and a first down but was briefly injured when tackled by Redskins safety LaRon Landry, who flipped the running back with the low hit.
With first and goal from the four-yard line, the Eagles were not able to get in the end zone. McCoy appeared to punch it in from two yards out but was ruled down and the instant replay confirmed the call. On fourth and goal from the one, the Eagles were not able to get a play off in time and took a delay of game penalty, pushing them back five yards and forcing a 23-yard field goal to make the score 17-6.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick was injured late in the first quarter when he was tackled by Redskins defensive backs DeAngelo Hall and Kareem Moore.
Vick scrambled on third down for what appeared to be a 23-yard gain to the Redskins one yard line. But as he dived for the end zone, Vick was sandwiched by the two Redskins defenders.
Vick got up and tried to walk to the sideline, holding his side, but stopped and sank to one knee. The run was negated by a holding call.
Kevin Kolb replaced Vick on the next play, a three-yard pass on third and 16, on the final play of the quarter. Vick was examined by trainers on the Eagles bench before he was taken to the locker room. Details of the injury were not immediately available.
Quarterback Donovan McNabb received a nice ovation when he was announced before the game, and the Redskins had a nice welcome to Philadelphia, too, building a comfortable 14-point lead in the first quarter.
After the defense stopped Philadelphia's first drive and forced a punt, rookie receiver Brandon Banks - who was signed from the practice squad on Saturday - took a punt return 53 yards to set up a short field for the Redskins.
The return was the longest punt return for a Redskins since Santana Moss scored on an 80-yard return on Oct. 28, 2008, a span of 27 games.
The return set Washington up on the Eagles' 41-yard line and a five-yard run by Moss was helped by a 15-yard penalty on Quintin Mikell for a horse collar tackle. Two plays later, running back Ryan Torain (who also was recently signed from the practice squad) ran over Mikell on his way to a 12-yard touchdown that gave the Redskins a 7-0 lead.
The Redskins defense again forced a punt on the Eagles next drive, stopping LeSean McCoy for two yards on third and 3. The Redskins took over on their own 22-yard line and subsequently went right at the Eagles.
Clinton Portis opened the drive with runs of seven and 11 yards and after McNabb overthrew a wide open Fred Davis on what would have been a touchdown, Torain rushed for 13 yards and another first down.
Portis was elusive on a screen pass for a 14-yard gain two plays later, and after two more Torain runs, McNabb hit tight end Chris Cooley on third and 5 with a perfectly placed pass on a seam route for a 31-yard touchdown, to give Washington a 14-0 lead.
The Eagles took over and drove down the field, with a screen pass to LeSean McCoy for 31 yards sparking the drive. The drive stalled after Vick was hurt on a play called back for holding and the quarter ended with the short gain on third and 16.

Works both ways, Ray. Eagles didn't design a game plan for Kolb. They expected Vick to play. And also Kolb -- will he adapt?

Now it's time to see if the Shanahan's can learn from their mistakes. Last week we ran the ball well in the first half and they abandoned it in the second. Let's see if they stick with the run or get stupid again.

"McNabb finishes with QB rating of 60.2"
Wonder if that is his IQ as well. Stay inbounds, fool. We almost give up another bomb, Philly had no business being in it at the end, but for McNabb's brash decision to point "first down" as he runs out of bounds rather than be smart and just go down and milk the clock.
Going to Minny? Fine, we STILL are looking for a long term QB.

I guess I'll be considered the first whiner:
Heyer false starts on 2-3 and we end up not being able to run out the clock.
Rogers has gift in both hands and he can't close it out.
Avant has TD in his hands and he can't catch so DH23 catches the deflection.
Offense non-existent in 2nd half.
But in the end, I'll take the 2-2 and 2-0 in the Division.

But they wanted Kolb, so that is what they have now!!
Posted by: rachel216 | October 3, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse
I think a lot of the offensive struggles that the Skins had in the 2nd half were do to poor line play (surprise surprise/captain obvious). Seemed like the Eagles were blitzing a lot and as a result, McNabb couldn't set his feet and read the defense. He definitely missed a few throws, but if that o-line held up its end of the bargain in the passing game, I think the offense would have performed a bit better in the 2nd half.
That being said, they did pick up a few first downs on their last drive running the ball, no doubt helping to secure the win.
Once Trent Williams comes back, I think the offense can mostly cure their woes.

Well, while they are a couple of plays away from being 0-4, they are also a poor ref call and Heyer holding penalty (Houston game) away from being 3-1 and in command of the division. So it all evens out in the long run. 2-2 and 2-0 in the division is about as good as it can get so far into the season.
This division is so bad, that they actually have a realistic chance of winning it. Only the NFC West is worse and even then, not by much.
I just wish the D could play this way in non-division games. They have given up only 2 TD's in 8 quarters of divisional play. 60 points outside of it.

Now for my review of the positives:
Skins came out more physical!!
Skins came out hitting on defense
Skins came out and smashed some mouth with some early running of the FB.
Brandon Banks big punt return got us going
Lorenzo Alexander huge hit on Kickoff coverage was awesome.
Armstrong showed he can play
Donovan showed he can still run when needed
AH92 was credited with 4 tackles today

If Heyer needs to walk home from Philly, then he and Buchanon need to take turns giving each other piggy back rides.
Look at it this way. Would you rather see McNabb have this kind of game and win, or have the stats from the Houston game and lose?
I'll take this every time.

I guess its just my rose colored glasses. Or this is the NFL, NOT the BCS. And 2-0 in the division when you "still need a lot of work" is pretty nice. It is true the Redskins overhauled the roster, the offensive, and defensive schemes. When you do that in any professional league, you will have growing pains. I dont know of too many "experts" that gave them better than 7-9 or 8-8. So I guess there right on course. Enjoy the W's folks, look around the league there is a WHOLE lotta 2-2, 1-3 out there. Wins are hard to come by. 0-6 last year in Division. 2-0 thus far...

BMitch on Comcastsportsnet said that Austin's agent has called him to help coach up his client. Banks has indicated that he'll be interested as well. This bodes well going forward for the Skins return game. Hopefully Austin will be up soon, since Devin can't get a rep at WR.
BTW IMO Heyer had a solid game. He has to focus more as far as false starts etc, but he held Cole in check, without much help it seemed, and he had some good run blocks.

I said it after Week 1. The clock is on for CP. He'd be a fine 3rd down back - can pass block and/or take a screen/draw.
Torain is just a different animal. Towards the end of the game when we were trying to kill clock and Philly was stacking against the run, Torain was taking contact at the LOS and pushing tacklers 3 yards. CP would have taken 1 yard losses on those runs.

BMitch also said it this morning on 106.7...
I though Heyer played well but his 3 penalties were costly. The holding call was away from the play and the 2 false starts are inexcusable.
My keys to the game were stopping McCoy and the Heyer v. Cole matchup. Didn't hear Cole's name much but a lot had to do with McNabb, the play calling, and our ability to run the ball.
I'd give him a C.

Lowly...............I only had a chance to catch the skins and the end of the pitt game today, and both came down to last play......All of these teams are not much away from each other and the most important position is QB. Soup went to Oak and was benched there, maybe the skins were not as bad as 4-12 indicated. Anyhow, at least our season isn't over. Nice to see the line start run blocking. I guess we covered that part of the playbook this week.
Kinda seems that way, don't it? We learn a new wrinkle every week... hehe.
But the overall gameplan was pretty similar, weren't it? At least this week our last drive consisted of us trying to run out the clock. Now, if we can do that on our NEXT to last drive, too, then we may be ok.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that. It's a lot easier to crunch a QB sideways than it is a RB straight on. Let's wait until he drops a Steven Jackson-type RB dude in his tracks afore we think about dropping the label. Speaking of labels and dropping something, that were a pretty pretty nice drop that Los had at the end of the game when the Skins needed a turnover bad, so his label abides, don't it!

We all looked on in horror as Los Stone Hands dropped a sure-fire game ender but dropsy karma was with the Skins when that Eagle dropped a sure-fire game winner on the last play of the game.
