Redskins beat Titans 19-16 in overtime

By Barry Svrluga

Updated: 5:13 p.m.
Overtime
Tennessee won the toss and got the ball at its own 33. With Rusty Smith still in the game at quarterback, Chris Johnson was handed the ball on the first two plays - gaining 15 yards on one and nothing on the second. That led Smith to throw, and his two passes were horrible incompletions. The Redskins got the ball back on a punt.

The Redskins started their drive from the 13, and Donovan McNabb did a tremendous job of scrambling on what looked to be a broken play on first down, finding Chris Cooley for a 26-yard gain. That's when the possession got strange.

A sack and a delay penalty gave the Redskins a second-and-22 situation from their own 27. McNabb tried to keep the play alive, but appeared to be picked off by cornerback Alterraun Verner. But the ball hit the ground, and the play was overturned on replay. In an scuffle that followed the play, Tennessee was flagged for a personal foul, and instead of third and 22, the Redskins had a first down at the 42.

The next play: Tennessee's Will Withehrspoon was flagged for hitting McNabb in the head, another 15-yard penalty. McNabb then hit Santana Moss for another first down to the Titans' 31. On second down, the Titans were flagged again, this time for illegal contact. That put the ball at the Titans' 25. Will Montgomery then started early, pushing the ball back to the 30.

But after two runs by Keiland Williams - that netted no yards - and an incomplete pass from McNabb, Graham Gano came on and nailed a 48-yard field goal with 8:17 remaining in overtime to give the Redskins a 19-16 win and pull their record to 5-5 on the year.

Fourth quarter

On this day, Donovan McNabb was apparently good enough to run the two-minute offense.

McNabb led his team 49 yards down the field in the game's final 1:37 to give Graham Gano a chance to win the game. But with what appeared to be a low snap, Gano's 47-yard attempt never had a chance, fell short as time expired. The two teams were tied at 16 apiece at the end of regulation.

With Titans' quarterback Vince Young sidelined by a hand injury, rookie quarterback Rusty Smith helped his team break an early fourth quarter tie.

Rob Bironas' 40-yard field goal with 8:40 remaining in the game gave the Titans' a 16-13 lead. The go-ahead field goal was set up by Smith's first NFL completion -- a 52-yard pass to receiver Nate Washington.

But on the Redskins' ensuing possession, McNabb led the offense 50 yards down the field and nine plays later, Gano hit a 42-yard field goal to tie the game 16-16.

McNabb was 27 of 45 passing for 339 yards after four quarters. Keiland Williams, playing in place of an injured Clinton Portis, had 67 yards on 20 carries. Receiver Santana Moss had 96 yards on five catches.

Third quarter

With the Redskins reeling because of injuries, the Titans took the second-half kickoff and immediately marched down the field. The key play: a 30-yard pass from Vince Young to tight end Bo Scaife on third and 2. Two plays later, the Redskins' health problems continued when cornerback DeAngelo Hall went down after making a tackle on Tennessee running back Chris Johnson, leaving the Redskins with Phillip Buchanon and Byron Westbrook, temporarily, as their cornerbacks.

But when the Titans got the ball inside the 10, the Redskins defense stiffened. London Fletcher forced Scaife out of the back of the end zone on what might have been a touchdown pass, and on third down from the 9, veteran Vonnie Holliday sacked Young. The Titans settled for Rob Bironas's 32-yard field goal to take a 13-10 lead with 9:10 remaining.

When the Redskins got the ball, their line featured Will Montgomery at center in place of the injured Casey Rabach and Stephon Heyer, normally a tackle, at right guard. But quarterback Donovan McNabb started the drive with an 18-yard completion to wideout Santana Moss - who then went off with a tight hamstring, though he returned for the final possession of the quarter.

McNabb, though, found Anthony Armstrong on third and 6 from the 37, an 18-yard completion that put the Redskins well within field goal range. After McNabb's third-down pass to tight end Chris Cooley fell incomplete, Washington settled for Graham Gano's 40-yarder with 3:55 remaining in the quarter, a kick that tied the game, 13-13.

on the Titans' next possession, Tennessee suffered its own injury problems. Quarterback Vince Young appeared to injure his throwing hand and was replaced by third-stringer Rusty Smith. Young's exact injury hadn't been disclosed by the end of the quarter. So on a fourth-down play from the Redskins' 36, Smith heaved a deep ball to Tennessee receiver Randy Moss, who pushed off on Hall. The offensive pass interference call not only cost the Titans a touchdown, but it forced Tennessee to punt, and the quarter ended in a 13-13 tie.

Second quarter:
While the Redskins and Titans entered the half tied 10-apiece, Washington piled up more injuries than points in the second quarter.

The Redskins took a brief 10-7 lead on Graham Gano's 19-yard field goal. The Titans then tied the game on their ensuing drive with Rob Bironas' 25-yard field.

The Redskins list of injured players continued to grow. When linebacker Rocky McIntosh (thigh) was helped off the field late in quarter, Washington found itself without seven regular starters: McIntosh, LaRon Landry (Achilles), Carlos Rogers (hamstring), Lorenzo Alexander (hamstring), Artis Hicks (thigh), Casey Rabach (knee) and Clinton Portis (groin). They also lost Anderson Russell (knee), who started in Landry's place, Derrick Dockery (knee), who saw his first action since Week 4, and Chad Simpson (foot) who hurt himself in pregame warm-ups.

Portis and Dockery both hit the locker room in the middle of the quarter. Their respective returns were questionable.

Without Portis, the Redskins had to rely heavily on rookie Keiland Williams, their only healthy and available running back. Williams finished the quarter with 45 yards on 12 carries, even though he was running behind an offensive line that featured three different combinations of linemen in the first half. He also had 22 receiving yards on four catches.

Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb finished the half 13 of 20 pass for 168 yards. He had a touchdown and an interception.

Though the Redskins were missing safety LaRon Landry and cornerback Carlos Rogers, the Titans didn't attempt their first pass of the game until nearly five minutes had passed in the second quarter. Tennessee quarterback Vince Young finished the half 8 of 11 passing for 87 yards. Running back Chris Johnson had 33 yards on eight carriese. Receiver Randy Moss had not notched a reception.

The Redskins appeared to have a couple of shots late in the quarter to take a lead into halftime. They were inching toward field-goal range late in the half, when McNabb threw an interception to linebacker Will Witherspoon at the Titans' 30-yard line.

The Redskins got the ball back and advanced to the Tennessee 33-yard line. But Gano's 51-yard attempt sailed wide left as time expired in the quarter.

Bad omen for the Redskins: On the first play of the game, center Casey Rabach stepped on the foot of quarterback Donovan McNabb for a seven-yard loss. Bad result for the Redskins: They came into the game 0 for their last 12 on third downs, and failed to convert on third and 17 on their opening drive.

But Washington, which was without starting defensive backs Carlos Rogers and LaRon Landry, got what it needed on the Titans' first possession. Outside linebacker Lorenzo Alexander stripped Tennessee quarterback Vince Young deep in Washington territory, and cornerback Phillip Buchanon recovered at the 12.

The Redskins came into the game with three active running backs - but Chad Simpson went down with a foot injury in pregame warm-ups, leaving starter Clinton Portis and backup Keiland Williams as the only available running backs. Portis had two carries to open the second possession and gained 15 yards, then caught a screen pass for 14 more. But on first down from the 41, McNabb overthrew receiver Santana Moss, who was open deep downfield, and the Redskins failed on third and 13.

Hunter Smith's punt was wiped out by offsetting penalties, and when he punted again, Titans rookie Marc Mariani returned it 87 yards for a touchdown - an extremely costly play for Washington. Rookie safety Anderson Russell went down with what looked to be a knee injury, and Alexander, a special teams star, also injured himself on the play.

The Redskins, though, took the next kickoff, and McNabb immediately found Moss for a 48-yard gain - a play on which Moss fumbled, but the ball bounced out of bounds. Though Portis went out with an injury after an 11-yard gain and center Casey Rabach also went out with an injury - forcing Will Montgomery to slide from guard to center - McNabb hit Moss with a 5-yard touchdown pass to tie the score at 7-7 with 5:02 left in the quarter.

Portis returned to the game on the Redskins' next possession after walking off the injury on the sideline, but as the quarter ended, Washington was dealing with several injuries: Russell (knee), Alexander (hamstring) and Rabach (knee) all were out.

Nice kickoff, gano. Hopefully the D can force another 3-and-out here

That was an ugly 3rd down play. But you gotta think that the O line shuffling affected the play calling and the Skins potentially going for it on 4th after the offsides.

This shed more light on the DUMBEST rule in the NFL: 53 players are paid but only 47 can play. This fu*ked up rule needs to change.

My initial thoughts on this body bag game is that CP might be done for the year, especially if he re-injured that nasty groin pull. Simpson has yet to turn a head on the field, and Torain is having health issues. Im thinking we might be seeing a K. Willliams/J. Davis combo in the very near future. I have liked both Torain and Williams so far this year. If only they can learn to block like CP in the next 7 days...

VY has grown BIG TIME this year as a QB. He is definitely a dual threat and he can hurt you either way. He is a much less explosive version of Vick. Off the field he still has some issues. His knock is that he is still pretty immature.

I'm kind liking Heyer at Guard. Nice to see the line bulling their guy off the line for a change and giving McNabb a little time.

Now we need the D to step up.

what in the world is going on with the Skins and injuries? This really is "body bag game II"

I like that they're still running the ball though, even with the backup FB having to act as the RB. That'll keep the titans from just going all in on pass rush every play, or at least I hope so

I have never seen a QB fall down this many times in a season. I don't know if its McNabb or the O-line, but he is the common element across 2 centers.

SlippedAndStagger stepped on him. Amazing how HE can get jammed into the backfield so much faster than McNabb can take his first step.

Posted by: Thinker_ | November 21, 2010 3:52 PM | Report abuse

Ok, you got to start wondering if its McNabb's fault that he keeps tripping because of the O lineman. Good grief..

If the Redskins ever turn this around, they should look to this game. They had every reason to quit--what?--10 injuries? and instead gutted it out. And found a way to WIN.

Howc an this be the same team as last week's?

And who will show up next week?

But I've been watching this team for more decades than most of you have been alive, and trust me, this was one of the best wins ever.

Put your hate and your snark away for week at least. This week, they earned a respite.

What a win! I'm mad impressed with that one. Overcoming 10 injuries during the game, plus the injuries before the game, plus Gano's heart-stabbing missed FGs...this team fought admirably. I love seeing that.

I wonder how we're going to deal with this next week. That's a lot of bodies to replace in one week's time.

Fisher: Vince Young is no longer the Titans starting quarterback
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on November 21, 2010, 5:06 PM EST
Titans coach Jeff Fisher has seen enough. Vince Young is through as his starting quarterback after another post-game meltdown.

Young hurt his thumb during the second half and did not return despite being seen on the sideline line warming up. Rusty Smith closed out the contest in a 19-16 overtime loss to the Redskins. Fisher said Young has lost his job regardless of injury — a torn tendon in his thumb.

As Young was leaving LP Field, Jim Wyatt of the Tennesseean reports Young threw his shoulder pads into the stands as he left the field. Minutes later, he left the locker room in street clothes.

“Safety Michael Griffin, wearing only a pair of shorts, ran out of the locker room and chased Young up a ramp to the players’ parking lot, but was unable to catch him,” Wyatt writes.

Young faced a lot of boos from the home crowd on Sunday, something he has struggled dealing with in the past. He waved to the fans, as if to ask for more.

Young’s immediate and long-term future in Tennessee will come under focus after this incident. He’s one of the highest paid quarterbacks in football, and is due $12.75 million next season, including a $4.25 million roster bonus.

Oh...Kelli Johnson is SSCHMOKIN!

And by Edwin Williams don't you mean Will Montgomery?

Best win we've had all season. Missing players from the start, hemorrhaging players all game, missing a FG that would have won it in regulation -- this team was given every reason and opportunity to quit, and didn't.

It was ugly as heck and this team has every reason to hold their heads up for the fight they showed today.

Hail the heck to 'em. Gonna be a good week.

Oh, and it's snowing here in the other Washington, which makes it even better.

Posted by: freakzilla | November 21, 2010 5:13 PM | Report abuse

We've beaten Dallas, Philly, GB, Chicago, & Tenn. There's 5 good teams that we've beaten. We must be the luckiest team in the league.

Posted by: Diesel44

So now Dallas is a good team? Come on, dude. You know what I'm saying. The other four games could all have gone either way. If you think I'm complaining about good fortune, I ain't.

Can we please keep the Fred Davis and Chris Cooley tandem? It was brilliant today.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | November 21, 2010 5:16 PM | Report abuse

Montgomery at center and Heyer at guard looked really good, against one of the best d-lines in the league.

McNabb barely got touched.

Big win.

Next up Minnesota, who looks awful....6-5. Back in the playoff hunt.

Battle of the bands maybe. Because if there's a mosh pit, Hall would be great at falling into it.

I'd ike to see him make a tackle rather than trying to cover up for his non-existant tackling abilities by reaching for the ball while the receiver gets another 20 YAC.

Hall couldn't tackle a paraplegic.

That makes me feel so good! Hopefully, DeAngelo has 4 INTs that game against Old Man Favre.

Well, it was pretty ugly.
Yet, with all the injuries, and it was a road game, thus under those circumstances, you never complain.

Good win to the 'Skins.

They did pretty good. Heyer was getting moved back a lot in OT. Surprising a guy that big has soooo much trouble holding his ground. Still he looked better at Guard than he ever has a RT.

Nice gut check win! That was a borderline 4th quarter preseason game line-up out there at the end and they battled through.

Check out the video of Seymour smacking Roethlisberger in the face. I think Seymour will get a suspension.

This team has heart and fights til the end. Huge improvement over last year.

Posted by: kerzon417 | November 21, 2010 5:01 PM

Exactly. Given the huge talent deficit Shanallenhan inherited when they got here, instilling a culture of heart and fight to the end was the biggest achievable goal for this season, and they seem to have made a lot of progress. Even last week when beaten and embarrassed, they never quit (unlike certain teams with stars on their helmets some weeks this season). Given the time to put together a legitimate NFL roster some this FO/coach combination could provide some good times ahead.

Thing is, He has to face a slightly different style of attack from interior linemen vs. an end or LB. Heres to hoping that he can learn from the experience (and the coaches too for that matter). Maybe he finds a niche for the future after all. A stop gap guard isn't such a bad gig for and UFA rookie OT.

All I know is that in the last 10 years, I've see the skins lose a fair share of games that they SHOULD HAVE WON. Considering that we were down to so many backups in this game, I will take this W any way I can. Heres to winning ugly. And ugly win is prettier than a pretty loss any day of the week. (And I really didn't think this win was ugly enough to complain about.)

The Skins are so up and down. This should be a game that they win, and getting a win will be a big boost for the team.

This was NOT an ugly win. Titans have already whipped everyone else in our division, with Giants and Pokes games on the road and killed the Eagles in their house.

This was a GREAT win, everyone doing their part, and establishing something to build on. I'd pretty much blown the season off last week and was looking towards rebuilding. Happily they've proven me wrong.

Posted by: bones21 | November 21, 2010 5:35 PM | Report abuse

That's two weeks in a row we've lost a running back to injury during warm ups. That must be some brutal warm up routine they have.
Hope to see Davis next week.

Gradkowski in for struggling Raiders
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on November 21, 2010, 3:39 PM EST
The Raiders wanted to prove on Sunday that they are back among the better teams in the NFL.

Instead, they are looking like the same confused offense that struggled on the road in places like San Francisco and Tennessee.

Oakland trails 28-3 early in the fourth quarter and they have turned back to Bruce Gradkowski at quarterback. Pittsburgh’s defense only allowed 57 total yards to Oakland before Gradkowski entered the game midway through the third quarter.

Ben Roethlisberger has completed 16-of-22 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns. Richard Seymour’s ejection will get a lot of attention, but this has been a thorough beatdown from the opening snap for the Steelers.

9 different receivers caught a pass today.

Is Fisher a racist for essentially benching Young and then saying after the game that he'll no longer be the starter?

The ego on that guy..

I did, to be fair - nice play. BUT, the guy is definitely in the "DB's that can't tackle" category.

Not saying he's never made a tackle, but dude is out there to catch INT's that bounce off 5 different players before falling into his lap.

I guess I just don't like the dude, but I'll take him. I just love making fun of the guy because he's such a blabbering McDoosh.

Posted by: Personal_Fowl | November 21, 2010 5:39 PM | Report abuse

Bones,
Of course it was an ugly win.
The Titans were forced to play Rusty Smith for crying out loud!

For the rest of the RI readers, I am not complaining about the win. Hey, anytime you win on the road in the NFL with all the injuries we had today, you are glad to get out of there with a win. I am merely contesting Bones' claim that "it was a GREAT win"

Great wins excite me.
This game did not excite me, but again, am pleased with the injury-riddled, road win!!

I love the way Banks hides behind his blockers on returns, before making the big cut to daylight. Kind of like the way Joe Washington used to run, but with better speed.

Hell Yea ! My heart can't take this kinda pressure too much longer !! And , wut the H**L is Galloway doing on this team still ? Can't the folks in the big decision making position see the man isn't and can't perform anymore at a professional level ? What's he got on this team ? Is he washing Dans' car on the side or something ? WTF ?

Davis just looked like a man today. He was angry let's hope shannahan keep him in the offense for those screens.

I've said it since his first long miss - GUano can't kick past 45. Don't even bother if it's longer.

I think Gano has a great mentality for a kicker. He's able to shrug off a bad moment and come right back the next time and nail the next one. Not all kickers can do that. The kid's got what it takes; he's a keeper.
