Final: Eagles 59, Redskins 28

By Paul Tenorio

Updated: 12:07 a.m.
Fourth Quarter

There was not much damage left to be done by the start of the fourth quarter, and the Redskins defense finally came up with some stops. Still, Washington fell 59-28, surrendering the third-most points in franchise history and the second most ever in the regular season.

The Redskins forced Philadelphia to punt to start the quarter, and Washington's offense took over at its own 16-yard line. Keiland Williams rushed for 10 yards and then four more, and on second down McNabb hit Santana Moss for 13 yards.

A nine-yard pass to Roydell Williams set up second and 1, and Williams rushed for 16 yards. Two plays later, Williams broke through for a 32-yard touchdown, his third of the game, to pull the Redskins within 59-28 with just more than 11 minutes left in the game.

From there, Philadelphia looked to run out the clock. The Eagles next eight plays were rushes, and the Redskins held enough to eventually force a punt.

Washington took over on its own 12 and couldn't move the ball, punting again. The Eagles took over and ran out the clock, ending the disastrous game with a 59-28 win.

Third Quarter

The Redskins opened the second half on a more positive note, taking over on their own 44-yard line and driving down the field for a score, but the positive feelings wouldn't last long as Philadelphia continued to score at will and went into the final quarter with a 59-21 lead.

On the half's opening drive, McNabb hit Chris Cooley for seven yards and Mike Sellers for 28 yards to start the drive, then Keiland Williams rushed for nine yards. The Redskins were eventually forced to go for it on fourth and 4 from the Eagles' 15, and McNabb found Armstrong for six yards. Four plays later, Williams scored from four yards out to make it 45-21.

As they had all game, though, the Eagles continued to move the ball.

McNabb hit WR Jason Avant for 20 yards on second down, then found WR Jeremy Maclin for 26 yards two plays later. Facing third and 10 from the 20-yard line, Vick avoided a sack and rushed for 13 yards. Three plays later, he connected with Avant for a three-yard touchdown to make it 52-21.

It didn't take long for that lead to increase.

On third and 6 from the Redskins 34-yard line, McNabb threw an interception to Dimitri Patterson, who returned it 40-yards down the sideline untouched for a score, making it 59-21.

The Redskins punted on their next drive, and the quarter ended with the Eagles again driving into Redskins territory.

Second Quarter

If the Redskins thought things couldn't get much worse than they were in the first quarter, it didn't take long to squash that idea.

On the first play of the second quarter, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick found WR Jeremy Maclin for a 48-yard touchdown down the right sideline, making it 35-0 Philadelphia with 14:51 remaining in the first half. Worse, the Redskins challenged the play and lost - costing them a timeout.

Washington finally put together something positive on the next drive. On first down, McNabb faked a handoff and bootlegged out to the right before throwing back to the left sideline, finding Fred Davis for a 71-yard gain to the Eagles three-yard line. IOn The next play, McNabb hit first-year fullback Darrel Young for a touchdown to make it 35-7.

Washington's defense finally forced a punt on Philadelphia's next drive, and it appeared that the Redskins might build a bit of momentum of their own.

McNabb hit Anthony Armstrong for 76 yards down the right sideline to set up first and goal on the Eagles' five-yard line, and after a four-yard run and false start penalty, Keiland Williams caught a six-yard touchdown pass from McNabb to make it 35-14 with 9:39 remaining in the first half.

Just as it looked like things might be turning, however minimally, in the direction of the Redskins, however, Philadelphia went back to dominating the game.

After being forced to punt, the Eagles defense provided another turnover - this time with Dimitri Patterson picking off a McNabb pass at the Redskins 28-yard line. Five plays later, Vick rushed in from six yards out to make it 42-14 with just over three and a half minutes remaining.

The Redskins punted on their next drive, and the Eagles again put up points. Vick hit Avant for 25 yards on first down, and though the Eagles couldn't pick up another first down, David Akers hit a 48-yard field goal to make it 45-14 at the half.

First Quarter
The first quarter started off badly for the Washington Redskins and only got worse.

The Eagles set an NFL record for scrimmage yards in a first quarter with 280, surpassing the 250-yard mark set by the 1992 49ers. They also scored 28 points, tied for the second-most allowed in a quarter in franchise history. Ten of the Eagles first 15 plays went for 11 yards or more.

Though the Philadelphia Eagles bobbled the opening kickoff, forcing them to start at their own 12-yard line, it took just one play for them to turn a negative into a positive. Quarterback Michael Vick dropped back and found wide receiver DeSean Jackson for an 88-yard touchdown. Jackson burned safety LaRon Landry.

Without running back Ryan Torain (hamstring) and Clinton Portis (groin), the Redskins were forced to start undrafted free agent Keiland Williams, and Washington looked to the rookie on the first three plays. Williams gained just one yard on third and three, forcing a Redskins punt, and Philadelphia went back to work.

This time the Eagles needed just five plays to find the end zone. Vick found Jason Avant for 15 yards on the first play, then Jeremy Maclin rushed for 18 on a reverse. LeSean McCoy rushed for three yards and then McNabb hit McCoy for 27 yards on a screen pass. That set up Vick's seven-yard touchdown scamper to make it 14-0.

The Redskins took over, but on third and four McNabb threw an interception to Eagles' safety Kurt Coleman, when the ball bounced off the hands of Santana Moss.

Philadelphia took over on Washington's 37-yard line, and again moved the ball with ease.

Vick rushed for 13 yards on first down, and three plays later hit WR Jason Avant for 11 yards on third and 5. On second and goal from the 11, Vick shovel passed the ball to McCoy, and the running back easily found the end zone, making it 21-0 Eagles with just more than five minutes remaining in the quarter.

Another Redskins punt set up another drive, and this time Philadelphia needed just three plays for a score: a 12 yard pass to McCoy, a 15 yard pass to Jerome Harrison and a 50-yard Harrison touchdown run that made it 28-0.

At least McNabb is the QB for the next five years. That's going well. That's at least two head coaches from now.

Posted by: skinsfan1991 | November 15, 2010 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Vick does this every year. Playoff time, he'll face a good Defense and he'll go into a shell. Because he is, in his heart, a coward.

Enjoy watching him now, Eagles fans. He'll fake an injury in the next tough game.

But now, as "Jawz," the buffoon says, "He's got that gleam back in his eye. He's having fun." Which is what really matters.

I hope he dies a violent death soon. It will put a gleam in my eye. I'll be having fun when I hear about it.

Posted by: Thinker_ | November 15, 2010 10:11 PM | Report abuse

You better hope nothing happens to Vick in the near future, Thin:

If something does, the FBI will be knocking on your door, based on your (presumably drunken) ravings tonight.

Can't tackle, can't catch, can't run! Whata gang.
Now D.C. has worst teams in three pro sports, Deadskins, Wizzards and Nots.
Wasn't it obvious that after Buffalo beat the Lions that going into this game the Deadskins were the worst by far in the NFL. Why pay $100 a game for this when it's so easy to turn off the TV.

Posted by: iliwai34 | November 15, 2010 10:16 PM | Report abuse

Don't think so.

Let them solve that shooting before they start coming after every fan who thinks Vick deserves his own medicine.

Maybe a weight around his neck and dropped in a pool would be more palatable for you? Maybe an electrocution?

If you think for one second McNabb will even be living in the DC area in 5 years from now let along still be the QB on the Redskins, you're smoking crack rocks.

This is a 2-3 year deal in all reality and may only cost the Skins 40 mil total.

BARGAIN.

Please tell me you don't really think that. I could even see this being only a 2 year deal. Still would be a bargain.

5 years from now, you will still be here getting beeped, pooped, called a racist, threatened, tolerating poor grammar and bemoaning the latest Redskins disaster.....

Can anyone for the love of God please explain to me how Hayworth was not in the game for the first two series of the game? Vicks saw this and took advantage of it by going long. Shanny, Hassle is not the answer. Neither is McNabb. I am done with the Skins this year.

Those dollars thrown at Fat Albert are certainly wasted dollars. He has been pushed around all game and is lucky that he didn't get called for a 15 yard penalty for getting up and pushing another playing onto his arse AFTER the play is over.

Noteworthy in this game - aside from Armstrong, the Redskins have no speed.

You can't play the Dog Killer like he's a regular quarterback. You need to have two players whose sole responsibility is to key on him. You allow him to have time and you get 45 half-time points; you play him first and you might be down 24-14 right now.

And lastly, you can't play him like he's Ginger from Gilligan's Island. He is a convicted dog killer who must be hit every play and with impunity. Give the defense two 15 yard penalties to complete the job.

'Skins are playing this game like a bunch of wusses. This game has now gotten to 4 down territory every drive and every trick play and fake you've got need to come out. Forget the run, forget the short pass, roll McNabb out and let him lose on that obviously challenged Iggles secondary.

The only hope is that some Redskin player has the gonads to put a Troy Aikman on That Dog Killer.

The team hasn't quit. They're just not very good.

Haslett ruined the only solid part of our team, but, hey, they've made turnovers.

I don't think it's too much to ask to cover DeSean Jackson and spy on Vick. Give them everything else. But, I'm not a former head coach of a semi-pro team, either.

Last time I quit on a Skins team?
I'm so loyal, but I did quit on them years ago back in the 98 season I think it was.
they were getting so killed by the Niners on a MNF game.
That team started something like 0-7.

I didn't even quit during the Spurrier years but I have no reason to be sooo tired tomorrow when they are playing so poorly this evening.

Good night everyone!

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | November 15, 2010 10:41 PM | Report abuse

Funny how everyone thinks our defense was good ever, the only reason we didnt give up yards in the past is bc we didnt score any points and teams played conservative against us. You dont need to get alot of yards when you can beat us with 7. Difference this year people wanna rn the score up bc they feel we might actually have a chance to come back with Mcnaab which that a joke!! We never had a good D!!

Posted by: divi3 | November 15, 2010 10:43 PM | Report abuse

This is absolutely, positively, no doubt about it, 100% Snyder's fault. He hired Cerrato, he hired Zorn, he hired Allen, he hired Shanahan, he signed off on trading all those picks, he held on to Cerrato because he didn't want to fire his "only friend." He has well and truly f*#*ed this franchise in every way possible.

Too much, way too much. I think he's made mistakes, but come on. Whatever you think about Snyder, he genuinely wants the team to win. Even if you believe the worst about him, he knows that if the Redskins are successful he'll make more money.

Peace out brah!

You can go huntin' now since it's legal and you's pockets is straight ma' man.

I can see it now, package McBiotch and our first rounder to Buffalo for their first (could be first overall) rounder.

That said, with what I'm seeing, 4-12 again is doable and could McNABB that first overall pick with Buffalo and the Raidas playing better.

I don't care who the QB is though, we need the best O-Line in the NFC East or we lose, it's that furking simple.

The most interesting thing is that this was done to a Mike Shanahan coached football team...not Zorn, not Spurrier, not Norv or Terry or Ritchie

Mike freakin' Shanahan.

That's an interesting point. Campbell was operating behind an even worse o.l. for the 2nd half last year, with not even a whiff of a running game. This didn't stop plenty of the people right here on this blog from making him the scapegoat when Shannigans decided he needed a new QB.

And here we are.

Alright I'm going to knock this out early. The defense came out sitting back on Vick and he exploited it. The offense didn't open the playbook until they were down 35 to 0. What in the world were they doing for 2 weeks... EATING DOUGHNUTS!!! They played zone and got picked apart. The first game they played man and press coverage. The line is still sorry with no changes. Lictensteigner IS TERRIBLE and Shannahan didn't make the change and STILL didn't dress Dockery. Galloway needs to be FIRED period.
What are they going to do with Titans next week with Vince Young another mobile QB with a NEW target in Randy Moss and Chris Johnson?! The D.Coordinator better get his head out of his *** and figure out something. We are giving up more points now and a ridiculous amount of yards. Shannhan better fix the line or that 78 MILLION dollar investment will be out for the rest of the season! Better luck next weekend skins. I'll be rooting for ya!

Were you thinking about Michael Vick?

Or is it only Jaworski and Gruden who use him for material.

He's a scumbag.

I just wonder if Hitler were alive and ran a 4.3 and "served his time" for "an unfortunate and immature decision" if we'd have to watch him, too.

Smart money says yes. Of course, he'd have to be a "whole new person."

Barf.

Not sure about this whole 3-4 thing. I guess in a 3-4 you can't cover the opposing teams best WR nor put a safety or LB on a scrambling QB.

I tend to think it's not only the 3-4. I think it was either poor coverage, blown assignments, or the wrong call at the wrong time... like when we rushed 3 and had Landry sitting in no-man's-land as the Eagles threw an easy TD and Vick had 27 minutes to throw.

(the receiver's foot was out of bounds, by the way)

In conclusion, we seem to suck.

How is it that John Gruden in the broadcast booth knew that the Eagles would have Vick sprint out of the pocket to make passes and mentioned this before the first Eagle play where Vick did exactly that and through a touchdown pass. Also, how did Gruden know on the Eagle's second possession that they were going to do a double reverse because of the field location. He predicted this right before the play when they did exactly that. How do broadcasters know the offense of a team we are playing and our coaching staff does not??? How can you prepare for two weeks and NOT know what the heck the offense is going to do, but a broadcaster does???? Another Daniel Snyder lost season. It will be followed by at least five more since we gave McNabb (who still can't hit short passes) a five year extension. Go Skins.

It was a poor play, but one of many the Skins defense had. In the big picture the Skins are a year or two away b4 the 3-4 personnel will be set. They are a year or two away from getting the offeense rolling.

On another note, Fred Davis says he's not in the 3rd down package...WTF 0-10 tonight, let's improve the offense by getting the Galloway's, and R williams off the field and letting a player whose been making plays on the field.

Shannahan must go. He is by far the WORST head coach in the NFL today. Has only won 1 playoff game in the last decade. Literally.

Two weeks to prepare and you spot a team 35 points. That's coaching. It just is.

His massive ego potentially cost us a win against the Colts by benching Haynesworth. Not to mention the massive distraction he created by starting a witch-hunt against the guy. The Dockery benching. Pulling your franchise QB down a touchdown with 2 minutes to go. Are these the earmarks of a great coach?

Some say he has changed the culture at Redskin park. Well after losses to the Rams and Lions along with a MNF embarrassment, it seems the culture has not only failed to improve, but, actually worsened.

I know Snyder doesn't have the balls to do it, but hes got to get rid of Shanny (and Bruce Allen - I mean come on, under this guys watch he drafted a KICKER in the 1st round of the NFL Draft, thats our GM? Really?).

This team needs to be completely blown up from top to bottom, get rid of all the players we have, even the good ones (Landry, Hall, Moss, Fletcher, Haynesworth, etc.) and acquire whatever picks we can. The only untouchables on this team are Orakpo and Trent Williams, because we need to keep our top young trench guys. Otherwise, ship them all out and start over. Get a new coach in here and a new talent evaluator.

Cause if you like Hitler, you'll LOOOVE Mike Vick.

FU. I'll say what I want, when I want, about whomever the F I want, got it? Name call away, you ding dong. I'll call YOU Hitler if I want to.

Hitler Hitler Hitler Hitler.

And now, you made me break MY rule of not calling people Hitler! See how mad you made me?

Nobody "equated" Vick with Hitler. I'm saying The NFL will play ANYBODY, no matter what kind of person they are, as long as they can run a 4.3. I'm saying, even Hitler, if a team (Philly?) signed him, would be on MNF and we'd have to hear about how he "paid his debt" and "is a whole NEW person."

If you think Vick is a new person, then maybe you'd go and buy an Eagles Hitler jersey. I think his number would probably be 666.

Speaking of 666, if Fking Satan himself could run a 4.3, I have to think Jerrah would outbid Philly for him, but you'd better believe, the NFL would be talking him up. "He's a troubled soul" "What a talent" "Amazing to watch" "Torching the Defense" "He really got the Safety to sell his soul on that one!" "He's playing for keeps tonight!"

What else did bubble head Jawz and Chucky talk about, besides Vick and how much we're all supposed to love him?

Gruden actually said he got choked up.

I almost puked in my mouth!

Please. Spare me the "second chance" line. A lot of people don't get second chances. If Vick was running a 4.6 now, he'd be out of chances, too.

I can't buy the "new man" stuff. Sorry. A guy who threw cake in Vick's face a few months ago got shot leaving Vick's Birthday party, so I'm finding it hard to believe Vick is suddenly Ned Flanders. Sorry. Don't buy it.

Would you buy it if Hitler was playing? Because I sure wouldn't.

Vick killing a few dogs equates to starting WW2 and mass murdering 12 million people??

Posted by: divi3 | November 15, 2010 11:55 PM |

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Yeah, NOT equated, divi. I suppose you're actually the one equating them. I'm just saying the NFL would feed us the same garbage no matter WHO was out there running faster than everybody else. Hitler, Satan, Saddam Hussein... Whatever. Murderers, dog murderers, drug users... Hey, if you can run fast, you're hired!

By the way, how many dogs did Vick personally murder? You say "a few." Really? Why would you come up with 3 as a number?

Because, the funny thing is, we're supposed to forgive this maniac for something that HE'S NEVER ADMITTED TO DOING!

Got it?

He's a new guy now? How about turning over that new leaf by ending your protection of the guy you no longer are?

No apology to anyone about killing dogs. He NEVER admitted it.

He was charged for "participating" in a dog-fighting ring.

No mention of how long, how many years, how many dogs, what he did to them. Not to mention IT WAS HIS! He wasn't just some low level employee. It was HIS brainchild.

I'm not forgiving squat. He'll be in trouble again soon enough. Next time, it will be a person he's vicktimizing. Mark my words.

And I thought our special teams, barring a nice hit by L. Alexander, were subpar this evening.

Other than that, it was a splendid affair, indeed.

That is, if you like it when somebody takes a dump in your mouth while holding a hot poker to your nipples.

If you like that, this was the game for you. Yes, siree!

Um, seems like those folks who saw better than another 4-12 season are going to be highly refudiated (newest word added to American English Dictionary). Get ready for another trouncing by Chris Jackson and Titans this Sunday after a short week distinguished by what? Wholesale cuts? James Davis? Who is #82 and what does he do? A new offense? Hah! A new defensive scheme? 92 in for all downs? Going for it on 4th and short? Blitzes? Anybody got ideas out there?

"[Philadelphia Eagles Center] McGlynn also said he was spit on by Landry twice during extra points."

So, is Laron Landry a captain yet or what?

It finally happened:

Redskins defense : NFL defenses :: Jason Reid : NFL blogs

Can either get worse?

Time to break out the paper bags?

mistamoe: You say that if we wear these paper bags over our faces, no one will recognize us as redskins' fans?

gimmiesummoe: Yeah, git rid of the clear plastic ones you made, dummy.

Cut slits for eyes and a mouth so you can see and breath when iggles' fans come running your way talkin' smack.

Mine worked just after the end of the 1st quarter.

And I have a sense it'll be in use 2-3 more times before the season is over.

Frightening thought...what if the Skins D only had one week to prepare for Vick? Most teams use the buy week to their advantage.

Can we get banned from MNF? Last 3 games...Vs Philly 27-21 (was 27-0 at one point), VS NYG 45-12 (over before 1st Qtr was over), VS Philly 59-28 (over before 1st Qtr was over). Thank god I sold my tickets. These chumps always lay an egg on MNF.

That had to be the worst performance I ever watched. It looked like the Eagles were in fast forward and the Redskins were playing in slow motion. Davis gets caught from behind with a 15 yard start; Hainsworth falls asleep laying on the field while Vick stands 15 feet away waiting for a receiver to open up in the endzone (result TD). Banks should not have played - he was tentative throughout the game. Galloway looked like some bum they just brought in from the street when he tried to run a pass route and then dropped those passes he managed to get close to. Even Cooley looked bad. Defense is not working and that really showed up last night. I could go on forever - they stunk and need to refund their salaries for that game.

I told my husband before the start of the season that we are going to get killed this year because Mike Shanahan got rid of some of the best WR's in the game when he came in. I looked at this so-called coach in a different light because of this move. Santana Moss have not been able to do anything so far this year because he has no help. Antwan Randle-El and Brandon Lloyd just the ones I was upset about!!! I also said that they were crazy for bringing old man Joey Galloway at age 38 (come on, man!!). I have never liked McNabb for anything and have has just proved my point. Then they have the nerve to sign him to a 78 million dollar-five year deal. They have painted themselves in a corner again with this Albert Haynsworth kind of deal. Haven't they learned anything?? To me, McNabb is not worth 78 cents and I am not just saying this for the first time!!! Mike Shanahan was totally out-coached last night as well. To me, he didn't have any kind of game plan. He and that son of his should be tarred and feathered and ran out of town. Andy Reid's game plan was so awesome. I will never look at Mike Shanahan with any kind of admiration after this game. He just does not have what it takes to be in Washington. I was born and raised in Washington DC and,in the Trinadad area. I will never fall out of love with the Redskins. I am a fan for life even though I now live in Seattle.

Shows how bad things really are. When you have the players in place for a 4-3 why would you change to a 3-4. The defence is the only thing that kept us close and we have had to cheer about for a long time, now that's gone! Why not change the offence to what the QB knows how to do best, not change him. Same with the defence. You spend all of that money for two established players that stand out in the NFL, then try to change them. That's why they have the draft every year! Nothing is going to change until this owner is gone. All a fan has to look forward to with, Snyder is heartbreak and higher ticket prices.

I don't know how to say anything much stronger than there is a horrible stench hovering over a stadium in Prince Georges county. It appears rhat 10 of 11 players on each play decided it wasn't their responsibility. Ihave been a Redskin rooter and supporter since the mid 60's.watching this game was sickining.
