According to league sources the Redskins have at least two teams very interested in moving up to the 21st pick if certain players are available, and I continue to think the Skins will make every attempt to move this pick. Depending on the board, they just might be able to do so.
As for making the pick, speaking to lots of people around the league, and had two guys tell me no way Mayo and Harvey are both on the board at 21, and one other scout was adamant that Mayo would be there at 21, but no way on Harvey. Mayo is generating a lot of interest in the 15-20 range, Detroit at 15 could be a very real possibility, but he's quietly risen in stature in Washington. The Skins scheduled a last minute visit with him recently, league sources said, specifically so owner Dan Snyder could meet with him personally, and Tampa Bay could turn to him as well, one pick before Washington.
If they're both gone I believe the Skins do the prudent thing and take Merling, and if it comes down to Mayo and Merling that could be very interesting. Dan Snyder has been the driving force behind the search for a new WR - starting with the Chad Johnson fixation back in January - and some inside the building are still worried that he will push for a WR at 21 should they get in that situation, but I'm gonna guess that they go ahead and be smart about it and get a receiver in the second round (Kelly and Nelson should both be there; Washington's repeated visits with Kelly, in particular, have surprised others around the league, with his stock generally slipping).
Got a decent amount of email about safeties in recent days, particularly Miami's Kenny Phillips. Speaking to coaches and scouts, several people told me they actually think he'll be the second safety chosen, behind Tyrell Johnson of Arkansas St. Two guys were deadest that Johnson could go as high to Philly at 19. I continue to hear that the Redskins are very enamored with safety Kareem Moore (Nicholls State), and he'll be very much in their sights in that 5-7 round phase.
Also, beyond any other second day DT, the Redskins are looking very hard at a pretty special kid, Marcus Dixon of Hampden, sources said. He spent 15 months in jail on a rape charge that was overturned by the Georgia supreme court. The case was featured on Oprah and every NFL person I spoke to raves about the kid's character and perseverance. He could be one of the real sleepers in this draft and I could see the Skins jumping on him in the 5th round.
I would not be surprised if the Skins took Kansas State corner Justin McKinney with one of their 7th round picks as well.
Overall, this should be a very interesting draft. The past 4 years, the only people allowed in the war room were Snyder, Cerrato, Gibbs, Gregg Williams, Scott Campbell and the guy who answers the telephone, and Snyder takes an active role, especially when it comes to wheeling and dealing.
