Eagles lead by 17, with big injuries on both sides

The second quarter opened in about the worst way possible for the Redskins. It finished that way, too, with the Eagles taking a 27-10 lead into halftime. The score marked the most points the Redskins had given up in the first half during Jim Zorn's tenure as head coach.

On the quarter's opening play, Eagles' linebacker Will Witherspoon slapped the ball loose from Jason Campbell and safety Quintin Mikell recovered - the same pair who combined on the Eagles' defensive touchdown on the previous Washington possession. Philadelphia took over on the Redskins' 36-yard line but had to settle for a 47-yard field goal off the foot of kicker David Akers.

A 17-0 lead this early in the second quarter couldn't have been good for the "Monday Night Football" ratings. The Redskins did mount their first scoring drive of the game. Thanks to a penalty on the ensuing kickoff, the Redskins started the drive on the Eagles' 45-yard line. Seven plays later, Jason Campbell found receiver Devin Thomas alone in the back of the end zone for a 2-yard score. It was Thomas' second career touchdown and his first receiving score. It also marked Washington's first offensive touchdown in two games.

With the lead cut to 17-7, the Redskins' defense made a big defensive stand, forcing the Eagles to punt after just three plays - but the momentum was short-lived.
Antwaan Randle El muffed the punt - it hit him the face-mask and bounced off his hands - and Eagles safety Sean Jones recovered it on Washington's 25-yard line.
After another strong defensive stand, Akers nailed a 44-yard field goal, giving the Eagles a 20-7 lead.

In the final minutes of the half, a disappointing 26-yard punt from Hunter Smith, who was playing for the first time in three weeks, gave Philadelphia starting field position at midfield. On 3rd-and-23 from the Eagles' 43-yard line, McNabb heaved a ball to DeSean Jackson. The ball was underthrown but thanks to lax coverage, Jackson had time to wait. It was a 57-yard touchdown pass - the 200th of McNabb's career and Jackson's second of the game - and gave the Eagles a 27-7 lead.

In the closing seconds of the half, Shaun Suisham kept his perfect 2009 kicking streak in tact by drilling a 47-yarder, cutting the lead to 27-10.

While Brian Westbrook did not return for the Eagles, the Redskins suffered a big loss of their own. In the quarter's opening minutes, tight end Chris Cooley was carted off the field into the locker room with an ankle injury, and Davis took his spot on the field. Cooley was not expected to return to the game. In the opening quarter, Campbell had targeted Cooley four times; no other receiver was targeted more than once.

The Eagles finished the half without Jackson. He was sidelined with a foot injury and went to the locker room early for X-rays.

Despite outgaining the Redskins offensively -- a 202-to-128-yard advantage -- the Eagles had only six yards at the break. The Redskins had three turnovers at the half and Campbell was sacked twice.

For the Redskins, Campbell finished the half 12-of-19 passing for 100 yards. He had a touchdown, an interception and two fumbles - one of which he recovered - and a passer rating of 72.3. For the Eagles, Donovan McNabb finished the half 10-of-14 for 118 yards and a touchdown.

Clinton Portis had 22 yards on nine carries, and until the half's final minute, Cooley was the only Redskin to catch more than one pass.

Running back Ladell Betts finished the half with 21 yards on three catches, and Randle El had three receptions for 19 yards.

I thought that JC looked terrible tonight, what with the interception, 2 fumbles, missed TD to Moss, and off target throws, but then I realized he is completing 63% of his passes so he must be having a great night.

Bro...who gives a rats arse about the ratings? ABC would draw more viewers if they switched to old Wide World of Sports tapes -- hell, just showing that ski-jumper dude wipe himself out on a loop would be more entertaining nationally than this.

How about spending some time trying to track down Cooley's injury as opposed to pontificating over freaking TV ratings?

So if I'm up by 17 against the Skins I'm not really worried. . . afterall throwing a pass that is past the sticks seems an impossibility much less a sustained drives leading to actual multiple scores.

And I will stand up here and now and say that JC is not even an average QB. . . I thought he had the capacity for last 2 seasons and maybe he did but not anymore or at least not right now.

Posted by: farstriker | October 26, 2009 10:50 PM | Report abuse

I don't think JC is horrible, but he is just mediocre at best. He needs everything, (absolutely everything) to be perfect for him to succeed. It's just too bad.

As for Antwaan Randle El, I just cannot understand how he's lost his punt returning ability so quickly. He was so good at returning punts in Pittsburgh, and that's partly the reason why we brought him here. He's given us absolutely NOTHING on punt returns and his stupid fumble was the biggest play of the game and a total momentum changer.

two big plays killed the D today in spite of some really big play.

The O is sad...needs to step up and help the D. If not, another wasted year of a top D.

At this point, start Collins the rest of the way. No way he plays worse then JC and with some time playing with the first team, he just might get it done.

And do not allow zorn to game plan. DS needs to man up and pay zorn as he shows him the door.

Posted by: Realness1 | October 26, 2009 11:14 PM | Report abuse

well, where's the checkdown option on the offense? where's the damn screen pass audible? a screen on any of those all out blitzes and we get bigtime yards.
this is hopeless.
and this is great to see. let's hit rock bottom baby, lets hit it so hard we go down even further than rock bottom. lets really know what its like to be lions or browns or raiders fans. i'm READY. lets do this.

PS: BIGTIME props to the redskins fans at the stadium. still makin' noise on a 3rd down midway through 4th quarter of a hopeless game. bigtime props.

We already have a coach lined up for next year. Any ideas as to who would be dumb enough to take this job?

Posted by: ZornInMySide | October 26, 2009 11:15 PM | Report abuse

There was once an RV parked off to the side of the SKINS practice field. Only HOGS, or honorary HOGS were allowed into the RV for a big stogie and a few brews after practice. Only players (no coaches) were allowed. Those with an "I AM THE MEANEST BAS TARD ON THE FIELD" attitude could make the club.

MEDIUM would have gotten you mugged, beaten to a pulp at practice/game.

ATTITUDE! ATTITUDE! ATTITUDE!

Thats what it meant to be a "REDSKIN".

anyone notice Campbell sitting on the bench staring into nowhere.. instead of reading the photos of the last Def formations. He doesnt seem to be into the game.. no emotion at all.

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | October 26, 2009 11:16 PM | Report abuse

I confess that I'm a little bit excited for the new V. . . I'm hoping they'll do the rip off the face move otherwise it ain't the real deal.

I give the D credit they've done their jobs and if we had any kind of offense we'd be in it. . . I think Haynes just scissor legged McNabb into a sack.

Posted by: cocodc1 | October 26, 2009 11:19 PM | Report abuse

hey guys, this is so awesome. we can dump people like CP next season when there's no salary cap. they'll just get their guaranteed money, none of them will get the huge portions of the last years of their contracts. we'll just have a bunch of dead cap space next year, which is perfect cause there's no cap!!!
Portis
Randle El
Samuels (retire)
Randy Thomas
Smoot
Todd Collins

if we get rid of those contracts next year, we'll be ready for a complete rebuild of the offense while still holding our defense intact.

My 3yr old son will now not be able to watch sportcenter tomorrow b/c if I allow him to he will starting throwing his hat as he pretends to be 26. What a disgrace. Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | October 26, 2009 11:31 PM | Report abuse

So Campbell could have won it for us. It was Rabach's fault. Is that the story?

Posted by: League-Source | October 26, 2009 11:31 PM | Report abuse

SO Devin Thomas would have had TWO TD's.. I think there are some positives.. this new playcalling is alot better..only problem is its still the same players

I SWEAR TO FRIGGIN' GOD....

I WOULD NOT PLAY CAMPBELL ANOTHER DOWN!!!

I WOULD NOT PLAY ARE ANOTHER DOWN!!!!

Posted by: jiacinto | October 26, 2009 11:35 PM | Report abuse

Jeez, wtf is it with blocking for punts? The way the Redskins run into punts, or almost do, you'd think a simple strategy would be to just punt pooches half the time.

Monday Night Football

A relentless onslaught worse than the Eagle pass rush: Slanderous Republican adds. I noted 5 in a row (could have been more) all wealthy republicans slandering a democrat. The streak ended when a extremely white dem hits an ethnic guy, with a vowel to end his name, under the belt. It's got to be a republican but, no just a white guy beating on a minority. It's probably all the same anyways. Coke vs. Pepsi, you want to vote Royal Crown. But Daimler bought out Chrysler. The Royal Republican Crown is safe. I may never see minimum wage change again. Even if I live into the 2020s.

Oh woe to the crack addled people, one post tax crackachino an hour is your fate.

CAMPBELL reads and reacts too slowly to be a top-tier q-back. He is a pocket-passer with no pocket to pass in (to turn a new phrase).

MIKE WILLIAMS has begun to come around at RT with occasional good blocks instead of all bad ones, and I see LEVI JONES taking over for STEPHON HEYER at LT in the fourth. MONTGOMERY completely overmatched at RG. He's too small for that position. Should be strictly b/c center. RABACH and DOCKERY decent, but no more than that.

Defense needs a SHAWN SPRINGS-type shut-down corner to replace CARLOS ROGERS. Even the often missing in action DeANGELO HALL is better than ROGERS at this point. FRED SMOOT is no worse this year than last. He's a keeper at back-up. JUSTIN TRYON keeps try'on, but he will never be a top-flight corner. Just 'in too short for this league.

I guess with no cap next year, SNYDER can buy an O-line and a Q-back, but he better take the best corner in the next draft if he wants to get the defense into lockdown mode.

SEAN TAYLOR is sorely missed. Nice to see HORTON run down #10 JACKSON even though he just managed to get into the end-zone. And REED DOUGHTY's sack was nice.
