Skins Fall, 14-10

I think you have to hang this on the offense. Pass protection was a problem, there were no secondary receivers beyond Moss and there was no ability to finish drives.

They had some injuries, but it' a night when two TDs might have won it. The Skins now have six offensive TDs in the past five games, and they blew a chance to put the Cowboys away at home.

They are back in the pack with much of the NFC, and will have to fight 'til the end to make the playoffs, it seems.

This team has officially hit the wall. After a bye week, we look just as average and unimaginative as we did against the Steelers. It's only because of the inferiority of our opponent that we aren't getting blown out. One nice drive to start the game and then we fart around the field for 3 and half quarters.

Zorn has completed his evolution into Gibbs 2.0. Scared, conservative unimaginative play-calling. Same old runs that everyone sees coming. Absolutely no development in the passing game. Check-downs and screens. Pass protection looks as shaky as ever.

Devin "The Sp-Ed" Thomas needs to get sent back to community college.

Someone forgot to tell Suisham it was a 46-yard, not a 26 yard field goal.

The only thing I remember about LaRon Landry so far this season is the play where he got walked on by Brandon Jacobs.

Our pass rush is so ineffective we should just bench Carter and Taylor and play 9 guys in coverage.

We are fading big-time; and at the wrong stage of the season.

Everything the Redskins did wrong tonight they've done wrong all season. It's just now, after nine weeks of games, even against bad teams like Dallas, the Skins are a found bunch. Everyone knows everything they want to do. Unless this team has a more dynamic offense and a better pass rush, they'll win another two, maybe three, games this season. I have a feeling there's too much wrong here to be corrected in a week or two, and the playoffs are but a distant memory.

As for tonight, Campbell regressed and made some awful throws. The offensive line had major breakdowns everywhere. The defense continued to give up chunks of yardage and big plays at the end of halves. No pass rush and porous pass defense didn't help, either. But really, you won't beat anyone in this league scoring just 10 points. So all the off tackles, slants and screens have to give way for some down-field stuff soon or no one will respect Washington's offense down the line. So much wrong to fix, so little time. That's what the bye week is supposed to be for, but I guess Zorn and Co. didn't use it productively. He's a new coach, so I'm not calling for his head. But this FO has to figure out what's ailing this team and fix it. Stop drafting pass catchers and start patching up the D- and O-lines. I don't trust Snyder, Vinny and the other cronies in the franchise's upper management, though, so I wonder if it will ever be fixed.

Love Devin Thomas, a formation penalty negates a 9 yard gain on a key 1st down resulting in a 3 and out late in the 3rd quarter, then drops a first down in the fourth, anybody still want to argue with me that our second round picks for this year have been nothing but a disaster? Maybe they'll be good down the road but they're beyond terrible right now, oh and btw, that was a rookie tight end taken after ours that made that go ahead TD catch, ours was probably still asleep at the team hotel or something...cause he sure as hell wasn't on the field.

Where oh where has the offense gone? Except for the first drive, the Skins offense was very offensive...no threat at all. My draft board is already set...all seven picks will go for DL's and OL's. No pass rush, offenseive line gets pushed all over the field. Poor JC is getting killed..the man doesn't have time to make reads to deliver the ball.

Zorn and Blache’s worst coaching job of the year and it came in a game they had 2 weeks to prepare for… Nice job guys. You don’t win games putting up ten points. No pressure on Romo, etc. etc. Letting Barber run all over us on the final drive…Give me a freakin headset… 16 points in 2 games in front of a national audience. Awesome offense Zorn...

Coach Blache called a passive game plan tonight. Romo was ripe to be flustered into more mistakes early but it seemed like he backed off at precisely the time he needed to throw ONE more haymaker.
I think the both lines played poorly tonight and that spells trouble for postseason hopes if it continues...

Devin Thomas is a waste. Tryon is a waste. D Brooks was a waste. M Kelley is a rumor, and F Davis is C Cooley. Besides getting lucky on Horton, how does Cerrato have a job? No playoff and maybe one more win this year. The first half was fun, the second is going to be hell.

Couldn't agree more. If this guy wasn't athletic, he'd be throwing pennies at the curb for a living. As it is they have a short bus pick him up and drive him to Redskins Park where they try to teach him the playbook using Disney cartoons. Dumb as a freaking rock. 10 games into the season and he doesn't even know how to line up, or when to go into the huddle.

'Skins will finish 9-7 and miss out on the playoffs. Sick of watching passes behind the line of scrimmage, or short of the marker on 3rd downs.

I understood the Giants and Steelers losses but we've let the C*wb*ys back in at our expense and, along with the Rams debacle, locked ourselves out of the post-season.

Spent force. Furious.

There better be some stud lineman in the draft.

t's thoroughly amusing to read some (the majority) of these posts. The change in attitude and temperament amongst the RI faithful wrt to Zorn. In case you guys/gals didn't get the memo: This team is a Gibbs reincarnate.

Its not about Zorn. It is as most intelligible observers note: Games are one and lost at the line of scrimmage. The 'Skins no longer can control the line of scrimmage in the fourth quarter. All of their games have been won or lost in the last quarter of the game.

An old and crafty offensive line has proved to be a liability for the 'Skins. As stated here b4, this is a 9-7 maybe 10-6 ball club. Not a bad thing, but a reality.

So why didn't Zorn start running a couple more draws? Look, I'm not a coach and I'm sure it's all way more complicated than I'm seeing it, but if your O line is getting hammered, try to find some way compensate, right?

The Skins got beat. 6-4 is miles better than we thought it would be at the start and we're not out of the playoffs. But I can't say it looks real good.

This game is squarely on the offense. The defense only gave up 14 points, gave us 2 turnovers and had to bear with a string of 3-and-outs from our offense (and a missed 46-yarder). Blache should sleep fine tonight. Zorn is a different story...

With the exception of the lack of a pass rush I have no complaints about the D this week.

The most important aspect to winning a football game..any football game.....is "TURNOVERS"... Oh yeah,, and converting them into points.. 0 for 2 in that department. As for the rest of the game... Pass protection was terrible and must get better.. To only score 1 TD in the last 2 home games is worse than what "gasp", the Lions have done. The halftime adjustments have been NON-EXISTENT. Better find a deep passing attack or playoffs will be a DREAM.

Zorn said the defense played decently. He's blaming the pass protection. Said they had plays down the field but couldn't get the ball off because the protection wasn't there.

Its simple, NO offense line to give campbell time to throw, (sacked 18 times in last 5 games), No pass rush and it pissed me off the way we can't get to the quarterback and ours is always on his back.

Posted by: lurgee5177 | November 16, 2008 11:31 PM | Report abuse

It's all about the lines.

You protect the QB better, we win.

You generate some legitimate pass rush, we win.

There are lots of problems but either one of those would have tilted the game enough in our favor to win. Maybe not convincingly, but we win.

This defense only gave up 14 points to DALLAS, yeah they didn't get off the field at the end, but they had been on the field all night. Our D played well, the issue is again, what I and many have said for years, we have no pass rush so we don't change games for our offense, are we good on d? yes, are we dominant like the ravens and titans and bears that our offense can not show up and we still win? no and that's because we have no pressure ever on the QB. And our oline is pitiful, can't wait to see how they play against the Giants, the Ravens, and the Eagles.

@ Seattle - 50/50
NYG - Loss
@ Bmore - Loss
@ Cincy - Win
Philly - 50/50
@ SF - Win

Let's say we get 1 of the 50/50 games. I forsee us getting 9 wins is that enough to get out of the NFC East? If we do limp into the playoffs it would be because we had the fortune of playing the atrovcious NFC West and getting a couple schlubs from the AFC North. If things don't turn around in a big way with this offense, then best case scenario is that we lay an egg in a first round playoff game.

Nope, Snyder says if we have 37 receivers and corners we win. The problem with this team is the trenches, Zorn is a great coach, Blache is a great coach, JC is a good to great QB, CP is great, we have the deepest group of corners in the league, Fletcher is a manimal, but we are not good on either side of the line. How many tackles did our dline make all night? how well has our oline pass protected against any decent defense and even the not decent ones? the core of our team is weak. Zorn is the right guy, I love the hire, you can't blame him for having a bad offense when JC has no time to throw, and that's not on Bugel either. It all goes back to the personnel guy Vinny and the continuous ignoring of and over evaluation of both lines. Until that is fixed this team will always be mediocre, as I've been saying name one team in our division that you wouldn't rather have their entire Dline than ours? and for the most part the oline as well?

This is a mediocre team with good skills guys and a good coach, you can beat NO, ARI, CLE, and surprise some people with good games, but when you don't have good lines, you will never be a dominant team in the league and you won't ever be an upper echelon team, that's just the cold hard truth. We still have a chance to get in the playoffs, but we have to revamp our oline and Dends this offseason if we want to take that next step, we're close though, I'm not jumping off any buildings, I'm just pissed we missed such a great chance to end the Cowboys season.

This team is still in the playoff hunt, maybe some of you so called fans want to throw in the towel but not me Zorn needs to replace Jansen NOW!!, don't wait for him to get your QB killed, the O line is old and beat up but they will have to do until the draft, this is where Vinny is in epic fail mode; a punter, two wide receivers one who is always hurt and the other who can't even line up properly, a tight end whom Zorn doesn't trust enough to put him on the field, and oh yeah they cut the punter and O lineman nobody can remember. The defense wasn't that bad i mean its not like the Cowgirls scored a ton of points, they missed Montgomerey tonite and Laron Landry missed a ton of assignments he needs to stop trying to be Sean Taylor and just play his game The D backs("God Luv em") play hard every game with no pass rush they perform above and beyond the call of duty Jason Taylor is a joke he pulled off the ultimate stick up without the pistol for that eight mil, well that's about it i still say they will make the playoffs So There!!.

If we can't protect Campbell, then the rest of the season is going to look an awful lot like tonight.

Listening to JZ's presser he said that we did pretty good on run defense. Was he watching same game as us. Barber was a one man gang in 4th qtr. We may have contained em for 3-1/2 qtrs but not when it counted and that's what counts, i.e., crunch time. I think the Skins' offense or lack thereof, has finally been diagnosed. Except for the 22 yd QB draw there was no imagination at all.

I do admire the consistency of Thomas, he always has more negative yardage in penalties than he does in receiving yardage. He is even finding more unique ways to screw up.

You can say all you want about Taylor, LaRon or Monty. Even dog Springs, but the D did not lose this game. This game was lost by the OL and poor play calling by Zorn.

If this offense cannot beat a team that was held to 14 points, then something needs to be changed on that side of the ball.

The Defense did their job regardless of the pass rush. They gave the offense two turnovers.

MCNABB DIDN’T KNOW THERE WERE TIES

Holy crap.

Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb said after Sunday’s ties with the Bengals that he didn’t know an NFL game could end in a tie.

Holy crap.

He thought there would be a second overtime period if the first one ended in a tie.

Holy crap.

Even the most casual NFL fan realizes that games can end in a tie. Don’t they?

Here are Donovan’s comments.

Why not join your happy buddies on the Cowboys blog? Must be a party over there. But instead you choose to come on here???? Sad and pathetic.

Secondly, your coach has been on the HOT seat for the last month....your defensive coach (Stewart) had his responsibilites taken away from him so your "Pillsbury Dough Boy" Head Coach can call defensive plays. One of your DBs is a nut job and is in rehab and may not be reinstated AND we beat your flippin' Cowboys in Dallas.

Posted by: daggar | November 17, 2008 12:12 AM | Report abuse

the way it looks, there's 4 teams (Tampa, Skins, Cowboys, and Falcons) fighting for the 2 Wild Card spots.
Despite how surprising they've been, I think the difficulty of their schedule will keep the Falcons at home for January--meaning there's only 2 spots for 3 teams.
Tampa's schedule doesn't look all that intimidating. They'll probably lose only 2 or 3 more games at worst, meaning they'll be 11-5 or 10-6. That means the Skins and Boys will likely fight for the last playoff spot.
this sucks.

All about the offensive line. Don't know why Jansen is still starting, Heyer should have been re-inserted after the Steelers ass kicking our line took.

Not too big a surprise, this is the NFC East, got to fight back next week and get a win on the left coast. Zorn and Buges have much work to do to make that line play better.

Second...if you can't score touchdowns you can't win football games. Sure it sounds very 'Madden-like' but seriously. That's why we lost the Rams game and why we should've lost the cardinals and browns games too. And who let Joe Gibbs on the sideline to challenge that touchback?? F-ing terrible.

Lisa, splitting hairs over challenges and stuff aside, you can't argue that it's incredibly hard to watch this team -- which was so good at executing Zorn's offense in weeks 2-5 -- have so much difficulty scoring touchdowns.

The O us letting down the D, the O is not taking care of its business. That's the story of this season.

Awful. Awful awful awful.

defense showed up to play but everytime they made a play, example being the two interceptions, numerous three and outs..the offense would get the ball and do absolutely NOTHING with it..the defense was on the field most of the game and simply got worn down which is why the cryboys were able to run out the clock using that slow, good for two yards running back..bad perfomance by the offense as well as the play calling by jim zorn..wake the f up and get it goin..clinton portis is the only thing good about this offense..a few changes off the top of my head...RANDEL EL OFF OF PUNT RETURN, CANT CHANGE THIS BUT WE NEED A NUMBER 2 RECIEVER (ITS SO AMUSING WHEN WE GO 4 WIDE WITH OUR LOOSER COLLEGE LOOKING RECIEVERS), CUT SPRINGS, CUT JANSEN, CUT RANDEL EL, CUT J TAYLOR, GEEZ THERES SO MANY, OH YEA, AND CUT MARCUS W...MATTER OF FACT CUT EVERYBODY EXCEPT PORTIS, SELLERS AND FLETCHER!

I don't think we have a whole lot to say to Dfan or Peaux_Sucent or anybody else who wants to come up here and talk SMACK this week. Our team lost a game it coulda-woulda-shoulda won, and did not look good doing it.

The results on the field, they do not lie. (And what happened in that first game is ancient history.) We lost to our biggest rival on our field when we could have buried them... and they dominated us, utterly dominated us, when the game was on the line.

We need to hope the team takes something positive away from this and starts winning games again, because it's going to be hard for us as fans to move on. For me, anyway.

tough game. Cowboys were humiliated at home by us and showed up hungry. Its the nfc east...your not going to when all of em. At this point 6 and 4 is way better than we thought we'd be after the first game with the Giants. As far as the draft class, its not going to make or break your season though a few up and coming O linemen would be nice. Wondered a little about the play calling in spots. The last three plays before the miss field goal especially. Portis knocks off a big run which puts us around the dallas 23 yard line and then he comes out. We run play action with SA and Jason has to get rid of the ball, nobody fears SA so dallas didnt bite. next play is that sideline pass that didnt work the 3 previous times we ran it even when the ball didnt get tipped. next play dallas pins there ears back and the Oline wilts thus a sack, which ended up in a short FG try. After the Poris run I would of thought we keep pounding it. Still I like the fact that we are in every game every week and we can decide our fate.

This one is on Zorn. His offense worked once, on the opening drive. Then nothing. He was outcoached.

On top of it, what people have been concerned about happened. ARE got dinged up on a punt return and had to leave the game. Lots of people up here have wanted ARE off PR because of the injury risk.

Without ARE, they had to use Thrash and Thomas -- and they are just too easy to cover. Which meant all the coverage shifted to Moss for the rest of the game

And oh yes, why is Moss running a 2 yard pattern on 4th and 4? Terrible call

Posted by: zcezcest1 | November 17, 2008 1:58 AM | Report abuse

Zorn showing signs of Gibbs stubborness (leaving Randle El returning punts) and his lucky playcalling magic sheet has run out of dust.

Three or four runs in row should have been called after the Portis run for first down has us on the 20 marching in, late in the game (instead he calls a pass and we see yet another long yardage loss sack on Campbell instead of a real shot at a TD or at least a better field goal try.)

The fourth down playcall in fourth quarter after the timeout around 6 min mark was a big disappointment.

Swiss Ham looks like crap. His 30 and 40 yard field goals falling short??? Missing is one thing, falling 10 yards short into end zone on 30 to 40 yarder says mechanics problems.

The whole team is sucking air big time. The stadium was quiet the whole second half because we simply can't sack the QB, no matter what. Fletcher doesn't show up again, so everyone calling for him to make the Pro-Bowl, simmer down. Moss is inconsistent. He can talk up his skills all he wants, the line blocked, Campbell threw and Moss dropped the biggest pass of the game.

Posted by: DownTownClown | November 17, 2008 2:54 AM | Report abuse

The more I watch this team over the years the more I wonder who's the blame for the lack of down feild production. Brunell and his Protege' Campbell HAVE NOT and DO NOT thread the needle down field. I've sat in the upper endzone at games where you can really see the field and receivers have been open but the ball has not been thrown. Do you really think Zorn is that conservative? He didnt run the ball nearly enough the past 2 weeks and allowed great pash rushers to basicly have their way with us trying to open things up. Campbell needs to get rid of the ball quicker and put it up for his guys to make plays. 2 targets over 15 yards tonight.. 2!! Yes the line struggled w/ protection but there were opportunities. Jason's growth is not what it needs to be 4 years in and i dont want to hear about how many cordinators he's had. It's still football. If we're going to go down.. Go down knowing we gave ourselves a chance!! Hail

Posted by: Twismjax | November 17, 2008 2:55 AM | Report abuse

No GM! No depth!

Zorn and his coaching staff were good at hiding our flaws at the start of the year, but I think you're seeing them now. We're thin everywhere except cornerback and running back perhaps with aging players everywhere. Plus, some of our better players are injury prone or have creaky knees i.e. Moss, McIntosh.

Our last draft sucked so bad we have to spend another pick or two on the WR position. We got NOTHING after moss. How the hell do you develop a young promising QB with perhaps the worst WR core in the NFL. With Moss out or hobbled, your forced to throw to Randle-El, Thrash, and Devin Thomas? There are some teams, Dallas included, where those players wouldn't even make the roster as WR's much less start!

Posted by: rphilli721 | November 17, 2008 3:41 AM | Report abuse

Just want to make clear that I am definitely in the drafting for both lines camp and linebacker. McIntosh is good but you can't rely on him remaining healthy - Fletcher is great but aging - Washington is done as a good player.

But, we got to have a 2nd WR as well!!!

Posted by: rphilli721 | November 17, 2008 3:45 AM | Report abuse

same old Redskins...everytime you think they're having a great season, you find out that they're just average...offense lost us the game last night, they are definitely going in the wrong direction, every week the offense gets worse and worse, and our defense is wearing down and it showed it's biggest problem last night...NO PASS RUSH AT ALL! the offense has gotten so frustrating to watch ever since that eagles game in philly...16 points in two games with one touchdown now..so maddening! (i think that "start Colt Brennan" will be coming back. Campbell is starting to get worse too, although he is not getting protected)

Posted by: rachel216 | November 17, 2008 6:19 AM | Report abuse

Redskins players need to stop saying "we're moving the ball but the drive stalls with a mistake, penalty, or whatever." (they've been saying that since the Rams game, why don't they fix it then? or execute better?) how many times are they gonna say that??!

on the other hand....WOW! that makes me a little happier! Donovan is as dumb as I thought he was! How do you play in this league for 14 years and not know that there are ties in the NFL?? the last tie that happened was in 2002 and he was in the league then... did he think you just keep playing??? wowwww what an idiot.

Posted by: rachel216 | November 17, 2008 6:38 AM | Report abuse

A wasted draft with no help for either line. The 3 top guys either can't get on the field or can't contribute when they are there. Just like last year, this offense is stonewalled after Moss and Cooley. Can't go deep, can't sustain drives on a regular basis, can't score. Unless they see fit to get some professional talent evaluation and draft personnel,we're doomed to repeat this... Repeat this..Repeat this..

What's funny is a lot of people are saying draft OL/DL and so on...But with this JA! picking the players does anyone think this will change?...Not a chance.

Is it just me, or are most posters now repeating (and amplifying) the criticisms LaCanfora has been making all along? High drafts not contributing; no pass protection or pressure on quarterback; basically good job on both sides of the ball but no knockout punches. When JLC brought it up, he was "unduly negative." Should previously angry posters apologize to Jason now?

if you constantly call conservative plays and not open it up this is how your team is going to play when opening it up needs to happen there will be no rythm offensively. get over torrence the defense would not have been any better. they all played just like the first game the by week hurt instead of helping.
