Win Keeps Skins in Playoff Picture

Very nice road win for the Skins. Not a lot of style points, but those don't matter much this time of the year. Ladell Betts has a history of coughing it up when he goes for what seems like hours without touching the ball, and putting it on the ground at the end could have been the game, or maybe the season.

Jim Zorn got a little pass-happy early, then rode the run for a good part of the game and got in his five-wide sets and slants and West Coast stuff at criticial moments, which worked well. Another big day from Clinton Portis and Jason Campbell managed the offense well.

Matt Hasselbeck was pretty bad for a good portion of the game, and another stellar effort from the secondary. Greg Blache got more aggro on third downs and that resulted in big plays from a defense that needed them.

Bottom line is it was a must-win game, and the Skins are right in the thick of the playoff race.

Troubling signs of 'Skins of the past few years: Betts coughing it up at a crucial moment. Also, a wide-open Mike Sellars swatting the ball away like it was a bee trying to sting him, when he could have crab-walked in for a touchdown.

2) WHY don't we KNEEL on the ball there instead of handig it to sp**ge hands. Worst case they woulda gotten the ball with 30 seconds and no timeouts at the 20.
3) As if it was ever in doubt, Portis is a monster. A good monster.

easy Longtime. are you serious about the fine?? i hope not. the guy had 145 on a sprained knee. He was clearly hurting. That's on Zorn to know if his stud isn't in, just take a knee. Risk-reward ratio all outta whack there by handing it off to the backup in that situation.

I am glad that we won, but we let a 2-9 team hang in there way too long. The SEA team should never have come even close to winning. The Betts fumble late in the game almost cost us the game. #24 bailed out.

It looks like NYG is going to win at AZ, barring any late second miracles from the Cardinals. That makes next week's game that much more important.

If we can beat the NYG at Fed Ex next week then the rest of the games become easier because PHL is down. BAL is probably beatable. CIN and SF should turn our way.

We could end up probably 10-6 or 11-5.

"Jim Zorn got a little pass-happy early, then rode the run for a good part of the game and got in his five-wide sets and slants and West Coast stuff at criticial moments, which worked well."

Which is precisely how the Redskins won early in the season. Beating Arizona, winning at Dallas, beating NO, these games were won BECAUSE Zorn started the game with an open offense. Even though the downfield plays didn't work today, the fact that he didn't abandon them completely opened up the defense to the short screens and the running game.

4th quarter: 15 runs, 5 passes. That's how the skins win. Open it up early, pound them late.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, when Zorn places the offense on Campbell's back to start the game (which he did), this team is successful because the defense opens up for Portis (regardless of whether Campbell is super-effective). When Zorn tries to establish Portis early as the tone-setter, the offense stalls under stacked pressure in the box. Zorn called a good game today.

Other notes; I was pleased with the play by Kelly, Springs didn't look like his old self (though it was a nice veteran move for the late INT), and what happened to our run defense?

Zorn transcript, courtesy Steinberg:

"What a huge play," Zorn said of the Springs interception. "It really took making a few of those plays to with this football game because it was hard fought on both sides. We were really banged up on our D line. They were warriors out there today."

"It was really hard before the game because I DID know a lot of people, I DID want to say hi to a bunch of people, and I just tried to keep it from becoming a distraction," Zorn said. "But once we got done with the pre game and once I went in, I was well prepared as far as knowing hwat I wanted to do, but I kind of did all that study before I got here, because I knew it was going to be a distraction."

"I think he went again to heroics," Zorn said of Portis. "Not being able to go all week, being very limited in his time. But he told me yesterday he was playing, period. He was a warrior. He really did a fine job running the ball today."

More Zorn:

"To get this group the satisfaction of going all the way across the country, and to beat the Seahawks in their home stadium, I know for the past four or five years that’s one of the most difficult things to do, and we achieved that, so that’s great," Zorn said.

"It’s cool, you know," Zorn said of winning in his previous home town. "But I like the idea that when we go back and they regroup and we regroup, it’s all about the seven wins we’ve got now and keeping pace with this very difficult division."

skins need to work on their outside rush defense. this has been a problem for years now ( if anyone remembers the two long tatum bell td's against us from denver a few years back and lt burning us just to name some occasions). dallas did it to us last week and we got it bad today so we need to fix that somehow before others catch on.

DAL lost to the Rams too. DAL lost to WAS, AZ, NYG, and and STL.

WAS has the same losses except that they lost to PIT and beat AZ.

DAL's losses are all to NFC teams. WAS has lost to DAL, PIT, NYG, and STL.

The PIT loss matters less to WAS. It looks like WAS would have the tiebreaker since they have less NFC losses.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

WE STILL DO NOT SCORE ENOUGH POINTS, PERIOD. It makes me SO angry when I see all the other game's scores. 11 teams scored 30+ points today. We have all the yardage but the score never shows it, it also doesn't help that Sellers tried to run into the endzone before he caught the ball. We MUST start scoring more points and stop kicking field goals, or we will have no chance against Giants. If the high powered offense of Arizona couldn't beat the Giants, then we have no chance cause we just don't score enough points. All of a sudden we cant stop the run either.

The only way to beat the NYG is to do it the way that CLE did: force Eli Manning to throw interceptions and force turnovers. In the games that I've seen where the NYG have played they've turned over the ball at least once. The key to beating them is to force turnovers and get points off of them.

The 'skins and Cowboys are tied in common games (NFC East, AFC North, NFC West). Furthermore all remaining games are against common opponents.

The 'skins hold the tiebreaker in conference games. Both are even in divisional games which makes the next game 'super' important to Washington.

Washington has a half-game lead over the Falcons for the last wild-card spot.

Simple solution: win-out and they're a wild card with a 12-4 record.

pfunk, great post and i like the detailed numbering. but i have to disagree with #8...granted, it's not what it needs to be, but we did have to sacks and LaRon's pick was a driect result of the pressure up the middle.

We can beat the Giants. We for sure need CP healthy but our defense can get in Eli's pea brain. They are nasty though, we'll need our A game.

Did anybody notice that when FOX put up the standings at the end of the game they showed Dallas as the 2nd NFC wild card instead of the Redskins? What gives? Don't we have the same division record and a better conference record than Dallas?

Posted by: LiberalMike | November 23, 2008 8:28 PM | Report abuse

We are ahead of Dallas, but its not based on conference record.... its because within the division, the 3rd tiebreaker is common games, which we are ahead of Dallas (we beat Cards).

Yes, it's true that Laron pick was the result of Demetric Evans attempting to swan dive onto Hasselbeck's forward leg.

I was in and out of the game. Were the 2 sacks the result of a stright pass rush? Or did we have to blitz?

I think if we can win ONE Of the next two weeks, we should be ok. We should beat Cincy and San Fran, and we SHOULD beat Philly (if we lose to any of those teams, we dont deserve playoffs anyway).

So 5-1 will get us in, but I think 4-2 could do it too.

Look people! If we don't fix a few things, we won't need to worry about the playoffs, b/c it'll be 1 and out again. This time, possibly at home b/c we could get a home game as a WildCard w/ a better record than a division winner...NFC North. South play each other and could possibly beat each other up worse than the EAST.

Any win is a good win and this does not hurt one bit. Portis was great. The defense played well enough, but Hasselbeck only looked sharp for half the plays and their running game looked too good once again when they ran wide. Is it that our linebackers are not filling? It looked like Fletcher had a miserable game and then he got hurt or was he playing hurt? In the end it was good to win in Seattle but it does not seem that the major issues have been fixed enough to win against a team like the Giants.

I know we won, but this is the one thing that bothers me: we can't blow out terrible teams and we allow them to think they can win the game. On the other hand, other teams are able to not just beat teams but blow out teams they're suppose to beat. Everytime we play a terrible team with a terrible record, we need to be absolutely perfect, our games are so close that a fumble at the end could have cost us the game. We played bad vs. the Rams and the Lions, yet when everyone else plays them they blow them out.

LOL suzanne!! He is great isn't he?

So unrealistic but I must confess I'm psyched that Jack's back...not as psyched about winning today but pretty psyched.

I agree with Rypien - splitting the next two would be huge. If we want to be a playoff team, we need to win one of them. That would give us a little margin for error in the last 3...still think that 10-6 will probably get us in. Atlanta, TB and Carolina will beat themselves up, Dallas will lose at least two more (NYG and Pitt). We definitely need to figure out how three-way tiebreaker thing would work since that's very likely scenario.

pfunk, 1 sack was D-line (Alexander, this guy has some potential) and one was blitz (Rocky Mac)...totally agree that we need more consistent pass rush. Hope Carter is OK, any word on his injury? Looked like it might be his Achilles. Chris Wilson, anyone? Demetric?

What I will guess:

11/30 VS Giants 1:00 PM ET FOX

Loss here. I would love to see a win; but unless the Redskins can find a way to stop Eli Manning and force turnovers, NYG has to be the favorite here.

Record: 7-5

12/7 @ Ravens 1:00 PM ET FOX

This one could go either way. I would predict a win right now because PHL beat them. NYG also beat them. WAS should win this game in theory, so I'll put it as a tossup leaning toward WAs.

Record: 8-5

12/14 @ Bengals 1:00 PM ET FOX

The Bengals suck. There is no way that, on paper, WAS should lose this game. But CIN, with their season long over, will want to play spoiler. If the Redskins play like they did against STL then they will lose. But I'm going to give this one to WAS.

Record: 9-5

12/21 VS Eagles 1:00 PM ET FOX

This is a game that we should win. PHL has been sucking this entire time. I don't see how they will get much better. Their playoff hopes are probably already gone. I think that, given the performance that they put in against BAL, they should lose. I'll give this one to WAS.

Record: 10-5

12/28 @ 49ers 4:15 PM ET FOX

See what I wrote about CIN because the same dynamic applies. WAS should win this game on paper. But SF may want to play spoiler. If the Redskins played like they did against STL and let the 49ers stay in the game, they will have a shot at winning. But there's a reason why SF is 3-8. Just like SEA today, although they may hang in there, WAS should beat them.

Record: 11-5

I think that WAS should end up either 10-6 or 11-5. The next two weeks will say a lot.

DAL still has to play SEA, PIT, NYG, BAL, and PHL. DAL will probably lose to NYG and PIT, especially because the latter game is at Heinz Field. BAL is a 50/50 shot for them.

ATL has to play SD, NO, TB, MIN, and STL. Of these games the ones that will be tough for them are SD, TB, and MIN. I think that ATL will probably lose one to two of those games.

CAR has GB, TB, DEN, NYG, and NO left to play. The only sure win that it has in that schedule is probably NO. NYG is probably a loss. GB is a game that could go either way. DEN is a tough game that could either way. TB is another tough game. CAR probably will lose two of the games in this stretch.

So, to get into the playoffs, I think that WAS can afford no more than two more losses.

Not for division tiebreakers. These are always applied first before tiebreakers outside the division are settled, and in the division common games are measured ahead of conference record.

The next 2 games will define the Skins season. 1 of 2 will be nice, but I remember when I hoped the Skins would win one of two and they won both (@ Dallas and Philly). A repeat of that would be great. The Skins D can force Eli and Flacco into picks, esp if they can contain the run aka the 2nd half of the Giants game.

The only wild card team that has a chance of playing a home playoff game would be the number 5 seed (#1 WC) hosting the number 6 seed (#2 WC) in the conference championship game. Seeds 3 and 4 (#3 and #4 Division winners) both host first round games, the wild cards play at these teams. Seeds 1 and 2 (#1 and #2 Division winners) host home games in Round 2 after they have 1st round byes.

Giants look to have the inside track to Seed #1. At this point, Cardinals and NFC South winner(Pnathers? Falcons? Bucs?) look to have inside track to seed #2, and it looks like NFC North winer will be playing a home game in Round 1.

I am hopeful that Redskins can get seed #5, I would rather play at the Cards in Round 2 than at the Giants. I know that is a lot of assumptions, but that is what the Skins are playing for... the right to play at Arizona (or NFC North or South) in Round 2 vice playing at NYG.

Clegg, SOMEBODY in that Division (NFC North) will be declared the Divsion winner and WILL host a Playoff game in either Round 1 or 2(if they somehow get the #2 seed but that is doubtful at this juncture).

It may come down to a coin flip, but SOMEBODY will be the winner. What may happen (and is more likely) is that 2 or 3 NFC North teams will end the season with identical records, one will be the Div winner via the tiebreakers and host a PO game, and the other one or two teams after losing the Division title will miss the playoffs completely after losing out to the other Wild Card contenders with better records and tiebreaker stature from other Divisions.

Skins fan 1st & 4most, but notes from today's Eagles/Ravens game which I attended (w/ the Ravens the main focal point):

1) The Ravens D is the Ravens D: 3-4 defense, which has given the Skins fits (see Pittsburgh, Dallas, Cleveland). While Ray is still Ray, Suggs is Suggs, Ed Reed is a future hall-of-famer (what a return today, Deion-like in returns), the real story of their defense is Hatoti Ngata, their nose tackle, who controlled the line of scrimmage against a below average Eagles running game w/ Westbrook and Buckhalter (injured during the game) hurt, which means Rabach better ball against his former employer, which hasn't happened in the previously mentioned 3-4 games.

2) Baltimore's O is run first, pass second, as it's always been. Derrick Mason is clearly their go-to, w/ Clayton making occasional plays, like the TD he had. Flacco still doesn't see the field that great, as he did not see Heap open on a few plays today. Willis didn't do anything today, but the Skins will see a healthy dose of LeRon McLain and Ray Rice. Flacco is a game manager, not wanting to force mistakes, throwing the ball into the stands on a lot of plays today.

3) The Ravens weakness is at their corners. McNabb threw picks because he underthrew passess to receivers who clearly had guys beat, but Rex Ryan is one to design blitzes just like his daddy, which contributed to the underthrows. Moss and Randle El can get behind their corners against man-to-man coverage with ease, but Jason's gotta have time to throw the rock (a pretty big if).

Bottom line: The Skins must take away Mason and get pressure in Flacco's face to beat them. They've shown a recent weakeness of letting tight ends get behind them, so I see them trying to throw to Heap a lot down the middle and misdirection. Still, there WILL be a burgendy and gold invasion in BMore come 12/7, so Skins nation should represent like Steelers fans did @ FedEx. Jason has gotta make plays and the Oline must pass protect, because more than likely, the Ravens D will shut down Portis.

As far as the Iggles, it's a long time coming, but change gonna come (bye A. Reid and McNabb).

Posted by: bernard_thompson | November 23, 2008 9:47 PM | Report abuse

For clarity's sake, the NFL DID NOT change the Playoff hosting formula. There was a proposal this past offseason to have the best records host games, but the NFL did NOT CHANGE the rule that Div Winners host at least 1 playoff game, no matter how crappy they may actually be in comparison to the other Divisions and Wild Card temas form those other Divisions.

Div winners play their first PO game at home, and absent a 5 seed hosting 6 seed in the Conference Championship scenario, Wild Cards ALWAYS play on the road.

Kudos to skins fans who came out in full force for this game. I am a skins fan /transplant living in Seattle and I couldn't be prouder.

Skins fans have shown amazing turnouts for today's game, and the last 2 playoff games.
For all the grief that skins fans have gotten after the Pittsburgh game, I can say that it looked like 1/5 fans today was a skins fan and we were loud and proud, which is noteworthy considering that Seattle is pretty much southern Alaska. Not just locals like me, but I met many traveling fans.

Talking to seahawks fans, the only visiting team that draws this many fans is the cowboys, but only because for some reason, Mexicans have some sick allegiance to this team.

Why does Dallas have the tie breaker now...

Head to Head is a push..
Division is a push..
Games in common is a push..
Conference goes to the Skins..

Yet they showed Dallas taking the last Wild Card spot...

According to the official NFL standings (from NFL.com)

1. New York Giants NCE
2. Carolina Panthers NCS
3. Arizona Cardinals NCW
4. Chicago Bears NCN 6
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers NCS
6. Washington Redskins NCE
7. Atlanta Falcons NCS
8. Dallas Cowboys NCE 7
9. Minnesota Vikings NCN
10. Green Bay Packers NCN

They tend to be the official record on matters such as this.....
