Everyone In Uniform

For what it's worth, during the portion of practice we are allowed to see, everyone was taking part, including Jason Campbell, Marcus Washington, Chris Samuels, Clinton Portis.

Now, Washington and Samuels won't play, and Portis seems very, very doubtful, and we won't know how much work these actually did in practice until we talk to Gibbs post-practice, but it was a good sign nonetheless.

Left guard Pete Kendall seemed to be getting some work with the first team and I imagine he will play Thursday, along with Fred Beasley and Randall Godfrey.

You're letting us down, Jasno. Surely this silver lining has a cloud that you should have mentioned.

Maybe they were all in uniform for a team picture?

Big Joe gone from DT?
And Wynn still around as a DE?
both surprises for me.

Posted by: Redskin Ray | August 28, 2007 2:48 PM | Report abuse

Great job with the updates, J-la, I appreciate your efforts. I'm surprised at Big-Joe getting cut, but what do I know when it comes to football.

Here to a sweep in the Bronx starting tonight!!

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | August 28, 2007 2:50 PM | Report abuse

Might have been nice to see Corey Simon in burgundy and gold since Big Joe is gone. They need a space-eater who can give the other DT's a blow. Simon seems to have a problem eating everything in space and everywhere else. Might have been a plug in the line though. With a small "Mike" like Fletcher they need someone to keep the Big ugly OL's off of him or he won't last.

Posted by: DMAN | August 28, 2007 2:51 PM | Report abuse

It's amazing what 1-2 cuts can do to change the dynamic of our d-line. With Salave'a gone and (I assume) Wynn counting his last days the D-Line looks down right young and energetic to me. Next to go (next year) is Daniels.

Defense is about speed and energy and it's obvious to me that the Skins have moved drastically in that direction this offseason. Kudos.

Posted by: Anyone say first yet | August 28, 2007 2:54 PM | Report abuse

So the entire starting O-line (Samuels-Kendall-Rabach-Thomas-Jansen) is at least practicing together. That has to be a good thing.

Posted by: Mike H. | August 28, 2007 2:56 PM | Report abuse

All of this news is good news. If they can find a couple of serviceable veterans on the waiver wire then they should be ready to contend in the NFC this year. Some have pointed out that Gabriel and Wiggins...ok, and Lang/Simon/Tank...puke, are available. Any idea who else could help?

Posted by: Glass Half Full? | August 28, 2007 2:58 PM | Report abuse

Wouldn't be suprised if the Skins are waiting to see who gets cut elsewhere in the league on the D-line. My guess/hope is the Skins are looking for an overacheiving young guy who wasn't quite good enough to stick on a deep team. Might even be worth a late draft pick to lock that guy up ... if they know who they want.

Good point about Fletcher being small in the middle ... so a big tackle could really help. Like Griffin. If Griffin stays healthy ... Skins have a real shot at the playoffs ...

TITANS SIGN COREY SIMON by Michael David Smith

The Tennessean is reporting that the Titans have agreed to terms with defensive tackle Corey Simon.

Terms of Simon's contract with the Titans were not immediately available, but Simon could be on the practice field as early as today.

Suffice to say that Simon's contract with the Titans is nothing close to the five-year, $30 million contract he signed with the Colts in 2005. Simon didn't play at all last year, sitting out with a knee injury and an undisclosed illness, and the Colts terminated his contract on Aug. 4.

Golston and Montgomery are both bigger than Griffin. We'll be fine.

1rdteenth!

Posted by: Anonymous | August 28, 2007 3:05 PM | Report abuse

They can stand pat at DT I think:

Starters: Griffin and Golston

Depth: Montgomery, Boschetti, and Lorenzo (who needs a helmet) Alexander

I don't think they'll keep more than that at DT. Daniels can also slide inside when need be.

Posted by: Mike H. | August 28, 2007 3:06 PM | Report abuse

ON THE "GUARD" front I still wish they could go for the young guy, the Falcons 4th rounder that they are raving about instead. Brunell becomes more valuable as we progress toward regular season and is more valuable than a Kelly Holcomb.

Having a YOUNG replacement for Kendall and/or Thomas to go with Heyer and Armstrong would be perfect! I guess old Kili doesn't have the brainpower to make it beyond the practice squad after 2 seasons. Then all that would be left would be a young replacement at center although Pucillo is only 28.

Well SOOOOO Many of you guys wanted a pass rush. Well here it comes ...

That means Montgomery and Griffin.

Golston is the "plug". How many "plugs" do you really need? The same will be true at end. Wynn is still more the pass rusher which is why he is still there. I suspect he might not make it through the final cuts though. Have to see how much they like Wilson, Alexander, Askew and Buzbee. You've got Wynn and Daniels continuing to age.

Sorry for the dumb question, but given where we are right now, what are our 'glaring' needs?

Where on the depth chart are the really interesting competitions as we head into Thursday's game?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 28, 2007 3:10 PM | Report abuse

Now we see why the signed Beasley. Schmitt wasn't able to get past the injury he suffered. That really hurts! Same with McAddey. That also really hurts.

Posted by: periculum | August 28, 2007 3:11 PM | Report abuse

Glaring needs...depth at TE and WR.

Moving forward...turnover on OL and DL (in progress) and one more starting quality receiver.

Our glaring need is a #2 WR of the possession variety.

Posted by: Skinz | August 28, 2007 3:18 PM | Report abuse

If we are looking at the waiver wire, shouldn't we be waiting until the final cutdowns? What we're seeing so far are old guys with no fuel in the tank and young guys with a lot of fuel but no tank to hold it.

And perdiclument, why would Atlanta want to trade their promising young guard for anyone that the Redskins would be willing to give up? Young for old? The Falcons aren't the Wizards.

Posted by: Redskin Ray | August 28, 2007 02:48 PM

We are also thin and OLD at DE. They won't cut Wynn. He already took a paycut to free up salary cap space. Gibbs 2.4 appreciates when players do this and he would never cut him, this year at least.....

Chris Webber for Mitch Richmond was a very good trade... I don't understand your post.

Posted by: Sacramento Kings | August 28, 2007 3:23 PM | Report abuse

Golston ain't a plug. 6'5" 320. Salavea was 6'0" 340+++. Daniels 276, Wynn 293, Evans 273, If you went to any games at Fedex you saw Golston get pushed around pretty good last year. Montgomery the better player but he's not an everydown guy cause he's better rushing the passer than defending the run. Same with Golston. So you got the same guy basically and they need to choose one and get a run stopper cause in this division if you can't stop the run then "it's game over man!" Philly's got a massive line, same with Dallas and the Giants line is looking pretty good too this year. Never mind the fact they did pretty much anything they wanted to do against us on the ground last year. Carter while looking like Tarzan plays the run like Jane. So you need a plugger on that side to help out. Maybe even a couple of pluggers!

Posted by: DMAN | August 28, 2007 3:25 PM | Report abuse

Nate, I don't know if you were asking about glaring needs rhetorically, but I don't see many. I agree with GHF that it would be good to upgrade at TE, but not sure that is a need, and definitely not glaring. Watching a few of these "pass first" offenses on other teams, seems like they have more solid depth at WR. I think WR is the spot that comes closest to "need."

Never got an answer on how the Europa exemptions work, so I can only guess about the fate of Lefotu and Hoag, but it is still way too early to put away the Boo Hoo boxes. Assuming the exemption does not protect those guys, the Skins still need to cut another 17 guys by next Sunday.

periculum, please explain how Wynn is a pass rush specialist.

From the results from the defense broken down at the postgameheroes site, looks like Daniels stepped it up for another season ... lining up at DT and THEN dropping back into pass coverage, and effectively so. Undrafted FA DE Chris Wilson also seemed to get in on alot of action.

Posted by: dcsween | August 28, 2007 3:25 PM | Report abuse

JC doesn't have to play in these silly preseason games! Why does he feel he needs to and possibly risk tweaking that invaluable knee of his? All of the "icon" players on the skins,: Campbell, Portis, Moss, Cooley, The whole o line, Carter, Washington, Fletcher (Already making an impact), Springs, Taylor, and Landry, all just need to chill out on the sideline wearing a fitted hat, jeans, and some ice (bling). No Pads!!!

BLloyd must go! --

Right. You convinced us. No one is arguing with you. What we argue about is which six Redskins should we cut to get the cap space to Lloyd him. Accelerating the guy's bonus if we cut him right now would cost about -- what? -- $8 million. We don't have the cap space.

We were lucky to find someone to take Arch and renegotiate his bonus to get him out. No one is dumb enough to step up for BLloyd after all the trash they've read about him on Redskin Insider. If you'd start posting a bit more positively, maybe we can build up the market for him.

Here, I'll show you how:

The #2 receiver problem is settled. Lloyd's challenging Moss for #1, and the loser will make a great #2. Lloyd's got the GOODS: Good hands. Good feet. Good vision. Good speed. Good God, I can't keep it up.

Trust me you didn't have to be at theFed to see Golston get handled like a $2 hooker. And besides, when players, coaches, and scouts break down an indivduals performance, correct if me if im wrong but don't they use film? (Well DVD's nowadays actually) The performance is watched on... get this... you won't believe it... A TV!!! WOW!!! The same kinda TV I watched all 16 games on last year. Go figure.

Wasn't Big Joe a "core guy"?

I'm not too sure how I feel about this. If I knew they had found a better replacement, I'd be fine with it... but have they?

Big Joe was as healthy as he's been in awhile, was pretty darn good against the run, and not exactly costing them an arm and a leg like Wynn, a Gibbs guy...

I really think that there are guys on this roster that are safe from just about anything, and that includes Brunell and Wynn. I'm not accussing Joe Gibbs of anything (okay, maybe I am), but this is just another reason we need a separation of church and state. Simply put, Joe Gibbs should not have a say on personnel. It's a mess having so many people involved.

Danny, I will never call you Napolean again if you fire Vinny and get a true GM that is allowed to do his job.

To the gentleman who thinks that TV gives you a view that people seeing a event live don't have, why do you think they sell tickets? When you are watching the game at the stadium you get to see the whole field and usually all 22 players. Watching TV only gives you the player carrying, throwing or catching the ball and the resulting tackler. The coaches who film the game usually watch it with a wide angle view that allows them to see an entire area of the field. When I said it I was not speaking out of judgement. I was just offering a viewpoint.

JonTPK, those are the obvious ones, but you probably are right. Those guys might have gotten a better chance if the game hadn't been suspended.

But, there are some vets on the bubble too, so some of your cuts could be spared. Vets on the bubble (my apologies in advance) seem like: Stoutmire, Fabini, Wynn, and Jimoh (yes, Jimoh). My odds say one of those four gets cut (esp. Fabini, who probably has the least love from a position coach).

From ESPN PFWeekly Chat:

Jarrod, Baltimore: Does Pete Kendall really help the Skins solidfy the O line? I thought they were a top 5 O line already, but this should have Portis and Betts to have huge rushing years right?

Dan Arkush: (4:09 PM ET ) I think Kendall definitely helps. He has been a very solid, tactically sound player wherever he's been, and I think he got a bum steer from the Jets. He is a bit of a locker room lawyer, but he's a very decent player who should help that Skins ground game.

Taylor signed a 7 year contract.

Both drafted in the same year. I don't know if Taylor's is voidable. But we have at least 2 years without worrying to extend him.....

Jimoh, oh Jimoh... I know he is a great special teams player, but when he's in the D backfield it's like we've offered the other team a giant open space to do whatever they want in. I think of him as a one-dimensional specialist, like a kicker or red snapper.

You don't want SwissHam splitting out wide on third down, you don't want Red Ethan in as an extra blocker down by the red zone, and you sure as hell don't want Ade participating in any play which doesn't involve some kind of kick.

Sean Taylor
Signed - 2004
Signed Thru - 2011
Years of Contract - 7
Options - 7th year is voidable

Short answer - he is under contract thru 2010. He doesn't need to be extended this year. Cooley and Campbell will be extended (if possible) before Taylor.

Yes Reality...this is Taylor's year to prove his value as evidenced by his weight. If he's ever going to be a reliable force, this is the year. In that case, we should resign him.

However, if he continues to be inconsistent this year, we should trade him while his name is still valuable to other teams. I'm sure we could get high picks or a top player in return.

POSTED 4:47 p.m. EDT, August 28, 2007

GARDNER GONE FROM K.C.

On Monday, a first-round pick from the 2001 draft saw his career suffer a major blow after pleading guilty to federal conspiracy charges relating to dog fighting. On Tuesday, another first-round pick from that same draft encountered a similar fate when he was cut by the Chiefs.

Receiver Rod Gardner, the No. 15 overall pick in 2001, was among the team's initial wave of roster cuts. Given the overall quality of the K.C. receiving corps, Gardner's inability to make it there suggests that he won't be able to make it anywhere.

"We were lucky to find someone to take Arch and renegotiate his bonus to get him out. No one is dumb enough to step up for BLloyd after all the trash they've read about him on Redskin Insider. If you'd start posting a bit more positively, maybe we can build up the market for him."

WTF?!? You really think that Jasno (and I'm a huge Jasno fan) is somehow more perceptive than all the scouts NFL teams pay to keep tabs on this stuff? If this this season runs like last season than I bet Lloyd gets his minimum if anyone deigns to pick him up.

There's a reason for that. We did not call a lot of run plays. The good news is we practiced page 701 of the playbook, which is called "Run the clock" or the "Bett's Kneel Down" play.
