Fear The Reaper, Just Not Today

Sean Taylor isn't talking today. The 1:15 tentative presser is off. Maybe tomorrow. We shall see.

Whenever he does speak to us, assuming he does, we, I mean I, will write about it.

JLaC, you need to get the intern off his/her butt and out to work. This is their shot at the big-time. Or at least, at the small-to-medium time covering an inferior franchise whose glory days are long past.

It should be noted that my intern just returned from SBUX with some pastries.

Who is least likely to be a starter against Miami?

Wade, Lloyd, Landry

Posted by: mugamack | August 1, 2007 1:41 PM | Report abuse

I'm thinking the Redskins will run the first play with 3 wide receivers.

I'm changing my stance from April and I'm now convinced landry will start opening day.

So Wade is the most likely to be bumped.

Posted by: mugamack | August 1, 2007 1:44 PM | Report abuse

It will most likely or least likely be Laundry since the offense opens with a lot of 3 receiver sets.

We're at 69,969.
Reviews of "Boren Ultimatum" have been mixed, but I am soooooo there....Saw "Hairspray" last week and smiled throughout. Travolta in drag doing a love song with her husband, played by Christopher Walken, is worth the price.
Where, oh, where is HaikuMan???
Our intern is very hard-working! And she's really gonna be busy when my CynCityBook business takes off.

Posted by: Cindy | August 1, 2007 2:13 PM | Report abuse

CynCity, I guess its OK to talk about Hairspray (many of us saw the last we ever wanted to see of John Travolta in "Battleship Earth"), but please note that there is currently a blog embargo in place regarding any discussion of The Simpsons Movie.

More than likely Gibbs will want to get a take and run through what Sean is going to say. Certainly Landry's new contract has to be foremost on his mind. It would not help for a new controversy to start along with the injuries. Those appear to make enough of a distraction as it is.

PANDA WATCH!

Quoting Anchorman will never get old, will it?

What is all this about ST? He calls a presser then cancels it? I guarantee you that the guy is furious that some rookie is now making more loot than him... and I don't blame him. It would be like any of us making 50k at our jobs, being named one of the top businessmen of the year (Pro Bowl), only for the company to hire some guy straight out of college with no business experience for 150k.

To jab at the Skins (because you know I have to) it also would be like a 5-year ticket holder being told that there are no upgrades only for new ticket holders to be put at the 50-yard line.

They should have known this was going to happen and prepared for it. They should have also known that guys like Dockery, Cooley, etc were/are up for free agency and prepared. My suggestions? Don't come within 3 cents of the cap max every year. Leave room. Don't sign guys like Archuletta and Lloyd to ridiculous deals and sign your "core guys" before they have the opportunity to explore and accept huge deals like Dock got. If we didn't go bananas before last season, we would have had plenty of money to sign Dockery before he was able to leave, we could have re-signed Cooley now, given ST a bonus to put him on even playing ground, and kept 2-3 draft picks we gave up for signing those clowns. PREPARE ya dopes. It's like they have no long-term vision whatsoever.

Posted by: jm220 | August 1, 2007 3:00 PM | Report abuse

darn, I just had a nice and long rant that didn't go through. I'm sure you all are devastated.

basically I said that I would be upset if I was ST too. it would be like your agency/company hiring someone straight out of the college, the year after you were named a top businessman (Pro Bowler), for 100k more.

the Skins should have know this was going to happen when they drafted him and planned. plan how? not come within 3 cents of the cap max every year. Imagine what they could have done with the money invested in/cap hits now associated with Arch and Lloyd? That money could have had Dock locked up mid-season last year, it would have Cooley re-signed, ST would have his raise on be on equal and happier play ground, etc. they need to say no to a Lloyd (this is still comical to me because we didn't even have to give him that money) or Arch because they have more pressing things on the horizon, like I just mentioned. But clearly they don't think that way.

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | August 1, 2007 3:02 PM | Report abuse

MV Dame, if a running count is your secret count mode, then do you go back to update the count after the date that WaPo archives them? I know that people go back and add comments to the ends of threads a day or two after the next thread has been started.

Can we talk schedule again? You all know how I feel about Detroit, by I'm not that psyched about facing Chicago just yet. [Minnesota has a line w/no QB and GB has a QB w/no line.] Trent Green is in trouble as soon as EITHER Skins safety gets involved, but the Fins D didn't get worse. I'm not too psyched about facing either the Patsies or the Jets (and the only reason I'm kind of OK about the Bills is b/c their incoming D replacements are huge question marks). There is comfort in the fact that the rest of the NFC East has to face all these guys too (but how did we get the short end of the straw and have to go to Foxboro AND the Meadowlands for the Jets?]

On our "others" (Arizona and Tampa Bay), I'm comfier facing the Bucs than the Cards, but would rather face both of those teams rather than: Atlanta/San Fran (Giants); St. Louis/Carolina (Cowboys); or Seattle/New Orleans (Philly).

It took me forever to catch back up with you guys today, you really have been blogging your guts out, with many of the old favourites back in the fold - although I don't believe that was the real Joe in Raleigh earlier.

Dealermique, no tickets yet - just lazy. That's a very kind offer to host/throw me out/stalk me, according to the run of the game but I'm committed to getting to the actual game, if only to see if Ricky Bobby's friend throws up in the car park and eats it again, ugh.

Also, I'll have my daughter's boyfriend with me and I'm not sure I want to explain "er, we're not going to the game, we're going to watch it at the house of a guy I've never seen who I met on the Internets..." although his face would probably be priceless!

Just to play devil's advocate...5-1 has us beating 3 outta 4 of the following:

Pub Golf, thinking about Green Bay ... and more specifically why I have resisted the "Sign Simeon Rice ... or if not him, then sign Strahan" bandwagon. In my book, if the Skins are going to bring in a former starter veteran DE, I want KGB.

PG, I like the idea. With the anniversary here, and thus some real history to use, I was thinking of doing a "THIS DAY IN RI HISTORY" type thing. But it's just so much damn work! (SJK)

THIS DAY IN RI HISTORY:

August 1, 2006 - Jasno drops some Prince on us! Honestly, I never noticed this until today. Straight out of 1999 he writes:

This is my first blog entry on Washington's favorite team, so forgive me if it goes astray. I woke up this morning and couldn't believe training camp was underway.

Truly a sign of the times, er, I mean... of things to come.

NOTABLE FIRST POSTER(S):

KGB is a stud. I just hate this team signing any FA's since Bruce/Neon/Trotter/Coles/Bloyd/Arc era has left the taste of Bigfoot's...well...a bad taste in my mouth.

Do I dare add C Port to that list?? In retrospect, who trades a shutdown corner - no - THEEE SHUTDOWN corner, a 15 year player, for a 5-7 year player in a franchise running back? The shortsighted skins. I believe I'm citing JLC on that btw.

Posted by: Pub Golf | August 1, 2007 4:23 PM | Report abuse

Thinking about the Packers some more (this IS Skins-related b/c we DO play them).

Found this on the Packers site -- projecting roster keeps by position.

http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2007/07/26/2/

This is the Packers' team website. Is the guy not that bright or would it even be possible to have only FOUR wide receivers?

Posted by: dcsween | August 1, 2007 4:24 PM | Report abuse

Any chance CP is faking so he can miss training camp? :-)

Posted by: JoeyV | August 1, 2007 4:25 PM | Report abuse

You're not the first to suggest that, Joey V. We've put the question to sources we trust would tell us if that were the case. They say it isn't a scheme to get out of camp.

Posted by: Cindy | August 1, 2007 4:30 PM | Report abuse

And don't let Packer discussion be stunted on this site. I've been telling Rick Bob how important those "mid tier" non NFCEast matchups are, ESPECIALLY early season. We had no friggin rythym last year. I felt like we were Super Bowl bound after that damn Jags game (alchohol involved).

RB - don't you forget about that $50 bet you agreed to!!! O/U set at 7-9, bastard!

Posted by: Pub Golf | August 1, 2007 4:30 PM | Report abuse

As far as I'm concerned, the Miami game at home is a "must win" (and the preseason games are "must not get injured"). Psychologically, the MNF loss to the Vikings was crippling, esp. to anything like "rhythm".

PG, when I get MY rhythm, there is usually alcohol involved.

McNabb, didn't you learn anything from CP?

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/nflinsider/

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb expressed support for Michael Vick during an interview here Tuesday.

"I'm a supporter of Vick," McNabb said. "That's because I'm a good friend of his and also we're guys that obviously compete to win the Super Bowl. We push each other. Now, I don't know exactly what happened in that situation, and I think for all of us that have read over the stuff that was over the Internet, the report, you look at it as kind of like, 'Wow, you've got your so-called friends and family members turning their back on you now to make their situation better.' They're throwing you under the bus so that they can clean their name. That's unfortunate. That goes to show, I always have a saying that I've always lived by: If you can't trust family, who can you trust? It's an unfortunate situation, and I just hope everything works out well for him where he can get back out on the field."

Posted by: CMoney | August 1, 2007 5:13 PM | Report abuse

I think there's a night practice and I think it started about ten minutes ago. Maybe there will be something new or different (other than an injury). I'd like to hear about a booming punt or a 85 yard field goal or something like that.

Posted by: dcsween | August 1, 2007 5:13 PM | Report abuse

CMoney, the difference is that McNabb didn't say anything about the underlying allegations, only about Vick himself. Seems kind of harmless ... one athlete supporting another (who happens to be in an extended period of bad, bad newz).

Maybe he thought it was really weight-gain 3000 or something.

From the BLloyd training camp journal:
"I've gained muscle and I've gotten stronger. I'm also a lot more explosive than I was. You can see it in my first couple steps off the line of scrimmage after the ball is snapped, and also running after the catch."

The catch? As in the football? BLloyd? He must mean when he's running after Moss or Cooley after they've made the catch.

last years horor show began in preseason....we need to show we can play this year in each of the four games, confidence, campbell and staying healthy and winning 2 or at least being very competitive and losing in 4th qtr against the other teams likely cuts against our roster cuts

By Kevin Clark | Sun-Sentinel.com
12:16 PM EDT, July 30, 2007

The offense got a workout Monday at Miami Dolphins training camp in Davie and the early returns weren't great. The defensive line was in the backfield pretty quickly, and had this been a game, it would have turned ugly.

Lots of interceptions: Quarterback Trent Green threw a bad pass that bounced off of Chris Chambers' hand and into the hands of cornerback Travis Daniels. A John Beck pass was tipped and turned into a Renaldo Hill interception. Another deflected pass from Gibran Hamdan found linebacker Channing Crowder. Another Beck pass intended for wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim was broken up with a nice leap from Michael Lehan. Coach Cam Cameron said after practice that ball-control was a concern.

There was very little space for the running game, and the offensive line seemed to struggle all day. Most of the runs up the gut ended very quickly.

Posted by: Dolphins Suck | August 1, 2007 5:34 PM | Report abuse

I think when Pretty Boy Lloyd talks about "running after the catch" he means those token 2 or 3 steps he makes after the corner or safety when there's an interception.

He's honed his technique on this by watching 100s of hours of film of Plexico Burress in the off-season.

Posted by: Redcoat | August 1, 2007 5:34 PM | Report abuse

Gibbs' pre-season strategy may be altered due to last year.

I think he'll be going for at least 2 wins, while ordinarily he would really sandbag it and say what a great job the other team did.

To try to stir the pot and at the risk of offending many (SJKx5 in advance) I thought I'd try an old joke.

Dealer, P Diddy, Redcoat, and SMACK were playing a round of golf and Dealer asked Redcoat about the levels of membership at the club.

"Well Dealer, there are two levels: Full, and Country. Diddy here is a Full Member, as am I, but SMACK is a Country Member".

"Yes" said Dealer, "I remember".

NAH ... that's all because LaLane throws everything into his juicer: rind, seeds, skin and all and then drinks it. He then follows this with some heavy liquid refreshment at the Harbor Hut. THe follows this by swimming out to the Channel Islands. Then more drinking at the Harbor Hut.

Could be right Periculum, but I think it's more sinister than that.

I think that there isn't actually a Mrs Jack LaLane at all. They shoot the ads using a split screen and Jack leaves the set for a moment "for another slug of juice" and 5 minutes later "Mrs Jack" comes in to do her piece before "going out back to strain her greens" whereby Jack returns and so on. A bit like Norman Bates.
