Skins Trail by One at the Half

Special teams has been the key here. Two misses by Suisham is not acceptable. It looked like there may have been issues with Brooks's hold on the second miss. We'll see after the game. And Randle El can't fumble that punt. Many of us remain baffled that he is still the first option to return punts. I don't see the magic myself.

The defense is really battling. Those guys are playing hungry and are fired up. The Saints have no rhythm whatsoever and it's just been a collection of plays - kind of a hodgepodge - but no real focus. Give a lot of credit to Blache and the D for that. The Saints are certainly trying to run at Taylor, as we knew they would, but it isn't getting them anywhere.

I love the way Zorn is sticking with the run. In these conditions and given the state of the passing game, I like it a lot. Yeah, they blew all three timeouts and lost the challenge option in the first 12 minutes of the game, which hurt on the final drive. It took away the run game inside the 2-minute warning for the most part and limited some playcalling. They had to operate with constraints, and having JC roll left on third down was baffling (does he ever look good rolling that way and throwing across his body??).

The Skins made a conscious effort to get the ball to Cooley in those clutch situations and his ability to run after the catch is a perfect fit with this offense. He broke three arm tackles on that 18-yard gain

Found it curiously aggressive that the Saints called two timeouts late - guess they still trust that offense and wanted another shot this half before starting the second half with the ball. Sean Payton is a gutsy dude, and man was it rewarded with that last second, 49-yard field goal. Payton looks like a genius and now he gets the ball to start the second half, too.

Kind of sloppy game all around. Lots of penalties, some drops, some poor fumbles. The missed opportunities and failure to convert a territorial advantage into a scoreboard advantage could come back to bite the Skins, but they certainly were by far the better team in that half.

They do seem way more energized than last week. I'm really impressed with our defense. We should be up by two touchdowns if not for our sucking in the red zone.

Good analysis; lets see how the defense comes out in the 2nd half. They adjusted well last week.

jason, what are you talking about? they kicked the fg with 1 plus minute left in the half.

It took away the run game inside the 2-minute warning for the most part and limited some playcalling. They had to operate with constraints, and having JC roll left on third down was baffling (does he ever look good rolling that way and throwing across his body??).

It seems like we have note developed the Red-Zone offense yet. Seems like we are attempting to keep it simple. Of course in the RZ the defense is going to have the advantage due to the short field.

Okay we just kicked off, touchback........

That's okay, N.O. adjusted; lets see what the offense can do. We knew they would score points.

This is the second time.

Don't you guys know the difference between Sonny and Sam?

Sonny still is sharp mentally.
Sam is the one who talks but doesn't add anything of value to the game.

Sonny on the other hand made numerous comments in the first half that were revealing.

HOW WILL VINNY CERRATO SLEEP TONIGHT?

(KNOWING THAT HIS HAND-PICKED PUNTER SQUANDERED A FIELD-GOAL HOLD AND NOW MESSED UP A BACK-BREAKING PUNT WITH NO HANG-TIME DIRECTLY TO REGGIE BUSH).

And play action passing; w/ a QB that can read a defense and throw to the right WR on time. Just say No to the Jason Campbell is Doug Williams nonsense. "Sir, I have have seen the real #17, and you are not him". There is a QB on the roster that took DC to the playoffs in '07 however.

Posted by: Lifelong Fan | September 14, 2008 3:31 PM | Report abuse

Time for Collins, JC is toast. He cannot figure out the game, holds on to the ball too long and has no clue where to threw it. The West Coast offense is byond his talent and ability. Use him for trade bait to get offensive linemen. Go with Collins and use the high draft pick a 2-14 season will bring to get a quarterback of the future.

Hey sfskin,
No need to bring a "snarky" comment.

Here is the deal.
It was 17-15 in the 3rd.
You always kick the XP to make it 17-16

NO scored so now its 24-15.
If we score then we go for two in the 4th to tie the game.
But now Zorn has made it possible to win only if we score twice.

He should know better!

I have been a die hard Skins fans all of my life. I think it is about time to reconsider because as much as I have defended Snyder and Cerrato, this waste of a punter is the tip of their bonehead and cocky decisions with this organization. The Skins will never regain their winning traditions under these LOSERS.

Posted by: jj | September 14, 2008 3:36 PM | Report abuse

Redskin Ray,
Your logic is off. It is better to go for 2 in the 3rd vs the 4th. At least if you don't get it in the third, you still have more time to make up for it, vs if you go for 2 in the 4th.

In 30+ years of watching football I've never seen a punter have such a negative effect on the outcome of the game.

A couple of weeks ago, Mike Wise wrote a column about Vinny Cerrato's decision to save face and keep Brooks even though Frost had totally outplayed him throughout the preseason. He also pointed out that our place kicker whos name I cannot spell much preferred Frost as his holder. Many criticised Wise for making such a big deal about this controversey, but already in Week 2 us fans are being tortured once again by Vinny Cerratos complete ineptitude and ego-driven decisions. FU VINNY...FU. You reap what you sow Vinny. To the die-hard fans, stop supporting this total mess of an organization until Vinny Cerrato is out.

Posted by: sfskin | September 14, 2008 3:29 PM
Going for 2 is not hurting us in this case. If we kick, we are still down 8.

It really would have hurt if NO had kicked 2 FG's. Then a TD will tie if you take the extra point.

I think the correct decision in the 3rd qtr is to go for 1. But it didn't hurt us in this game.

Either way, we need a FG to win.

Uh, do you think they chose her for her football knowledge?

In fact, who on this crew was selected based on football knowledge?

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 14, 2008 3:55 PM | Report abuse

they're saying now you need 2 scores to win when if they had gone for 1 they would've only needed 1TD and 1 two point conversion.

Posted by: dealer | September 14, 2008 3:32 PM

This argumentdoesn't work, because if they failed the first time, you have to assume that they use the same play and get the same result.

Posted by: frediefritz | September 14, 2008 3:56 PM | Report abuse

Woohoo! We can do it! It's sexy time! Thanks for the scores explanations all.

Was not watching the game, but was going for it on 4th and 2 a smart play...in particular running a pass play?

At least a run play would have kept the clock running or used a timeout.

Not hatin' on the Skins, just concerned our inexperienced coaching staff doesn't understand Xs and Os.

Great win today.

good win for the skins, but it doesnt hide the fact management sucks. i wouldn't be suprised if this punter gets release this week or a few weeks from now. to save face, vinny and company will come up with an imaginary injury to the punter. what a joke vinny and danny are.
antonio pierce and those who couldn't wait to leave, know exactly who they were dealing with. including the DF coordinator for the giants, spagnulo (sp?), who quickly withdrew his name from these bozo's considerations.

No you don't understand X's and O's because the clock automatically stops on a change of possession.

Good win but lets not forget who plays in our division, much less the conference.

Randle El may have had a costly fumble but he also has had 5 touchdowns for punt returns in his career. He is not Devin Hester but he certainly has proven himself as asolid punt returner in his career.
