First Michael Vick, now Vince Young in Redskins' path

By Jason Reid

The Tennessee Titans have lost their past two games while shuffling quarterbacks because of injuries.

Vince Young, who has been slowed since spraining his knee and ankle on Oct. 18 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, is expected to start Sunday against the Redskins at LP Field. Washington (4-5) had a nightmarish experience against Michael Vick in Monday night's 59-28 loss to Philadelphia Eagles, and Young, like Vick, is a dual-threat quarterback.

Vick rushed for 80 yards (with a 10.0-yard per carry average) and two touchdowns against the Redskins' overmatched defense, and Young is capable of having a big game running as well, Redskins players said. The Redskins must do a better job against Young than they did against Vick.

"We got to treat this as a similar-type quarterback [situation] with Michael Vick, because he [Young] has that running ability and he can throw on the run as well," said outside linebacker Brian Orakpo, Young's teammate in 2005 at the University of Texas. "So we have to change our whole game plan from what we did last week.

"Kinda revamp it and kinda make sure we're better at playing these running quarterbacks. With Michael Vick in our division, we're gonna see a lot more of that. We've got to be a lot more prepared, a lot more consistent and better as far as playing these type of running-threat quarterbacks."

Before suffering the injuries, Young was off to a strong start for the Titans (5-4). After leaving early against Jacksonville, the five-year veteran sat out against the Eagles on Oct. 24.

Young aggravated his ankle injury in his return to the lineup Oct. 31 against the San Diego Chargers. He rested and rehabbed during the Titans' bye week, but Coach Jeff Fisher said Young had not recovered enough to start during the 29-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 10.

Young, however, entered the game in the second half after Kerry Collins suffered a calf injury in the first half. In eight games, including seven starts, Young has passed for 1,090 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions. His 97.6 passer rating is by far the highest of his career, which, to this point, has not been nearly as productive as some in the NFL once envisioned.

"He's a very dangerous quarterback," Orakpo said. "On film, he shows he has big-play capability, something that we really gotta be prepared for.

"He's throwing the ball a lot better, it seems like, from the last time I played with him. He's a guy that has his ups and downs, but I really feel like he's a playmaker-type guy once he settles in and really takes command of that offense."

Knock VY out of the game. It's the only way...

VY isn't half the player Vick is, I would rather face Young then Collins.

haven't seen much of the titans, but if you go by QB ratings, I'd rather us play against collins than young, not to mention youngs running ability as compared too collins

young - 97.6 QB rating
collins - 79.1 QB rating

No argument on VY/Vick, but Collins is a statue back there...much better matchup for this defense. But it's neither here nor there since Collins is hurt and won't play anyway.

I don't even know who the Titans 3rd string guy is...whoever that is HAS to be a better matchup than VY.

We need to play more statues.

------------------------------------------
I think you have to take the edges away from them, even if it means sacrificing the middle. Chris Johnson isn't going to do much running between the tackles and neither is Vince Young if he is a little gimpy, so move the linebackers outside a little more, move the ends out a little more and let the safeties guard the middle. The wide receivers aren't much - especially if you consider Moss hasn't learned all of the offense and has no rapport with Young. This might actually be one of those games where I would - gulp - start Doughty at free safety just tog et a little more consistent tackling closer to the LOS.

Vince Young beat the Redskins at FedEx when he was an 0-5 crappy rookie QB. I don't see any sign from our coaching or defense that he's not going to light us up at home with a top tier RB and Randy Moss as weapons.

Posted by: PlayAction | November 19, 2010 8:22 AM | Report abuse

I'm looking to see how Haynesworth plays on Sunday. Is he going to play like he's "always a Titan at heart", or is he going to play like he wants the Titans to miss him so much that they'll trade a second round pick to get him back. I don't know if he even has that kind of a game in him. Four good plays and he's done for the day.

monk, we'll need someone from RI to find VY and do something f-ed up with that damn "hook 'em horns" sign...gets him every time. I nominate NPI...seems like he's ALWAYS getting someone upset...

2 TE set's!

I don't understand this. NE is doing this and making it work. How come the redskins can't? They have the personnel. ESPECIALLY when the OL looks the way it does.

Yet another head scratcher.

Good point...maybe takes down a couple of VY's O-lineman down with him. Plus NPI spends 6-10 weeks in rehab relearning how to walk. The more I think about it, the more I like it...

Love how people assume Moss is going to go off in this game...I mean, dude has been only mildly interested in playing football this season. What makes you think he's gonna want a piece of the Redskins?

Moss and Haynesworth can prop each other up in pre-game warmups while the rest of their teams prepare.

The New England game isn't until 4:15 so he doesn't have anything else to do with his time while he waits for the game to come on TV. Might as well run a few routes. He'll skip the fourth quarter, though, so he can shower and get to a sports bar by 4:15. N-P-I will be waiting for him there.

Playing catch-up...

Re: Joey Galloway

So the coaches weren't pleased with his play on Monday? How do they feel about his play all season long, I wonder? And benching Galloway for Roydell Williams is about as stupid as benching McNabb for Rex Grossman...oh, right...

Re: Haynesworth on the ground

I don't mind if the big fella lays out a play or 2 here/there. AH was getting up the middle and flushing Vick out of the pocket several times during the game. Only problem is that we couldn't do anything once he was out of the pocket.

Re: 3rd Downs

Ok. Many of us figured that the "upgrade" in coaching this year would automaticaly get us a couple more wins over Zorn's record. I'm starting to back off of that position. Zorn's team never coughed up 59 points and our 3rd down % is historically low. WTH. A coach's job is to put players in position to succeed. So far the coaching is on par with Zorn and Co., IMO.

Coaching has been subpar, but I wouldn't go that far...to be fair, a Zorn team wouldn't put 28 on the board last week and the only reason he never gave up 59 points is because last year we didn't play anybody. At what point to we give Vick his props for playing lights out ball and not hanging the total sum of that performance on the Redskins D? I'd bet the '85 Bears wouldn't have kept the Eagles under 30 last week...they were that good.

Posted by: brownwood26 | November 19, 2010 9:42 AM | Report abuse

brown,

People will see this week when Vick and the Eagles crush the Giants, I bet they put up 35+.

The intrigue of a) Having a coach that says during training camp something along the lines of "3rd down is where a quarterback earns his money." b) The Redskins historically low 3rd down conversion percentage. c) The reputations of Shanahan and McNabb. d) The odd contract McNabb signed. ...It all adds up to a gathering off-season storm that is interesting, even by Redskins standards.

By the way Ih8dallas...I'm a "Fringe" fan too. Great episode last night, huh? Two Olivias...definitely better than one.

The 59 points was also achieved by capitalizing on turnovers. All 3 INTs led to TDs, including the pick 6. And the Skins converted ZERO third downs.

So it was bad defense AND bad offense helping Philly score.
