After a Quarter, It's 6-0 Skins

Well, we all figured on a defensive struggle, right?

Skins settled for field goals and wasted unreal field position. That could come back to haunt them ... or not, considering how ineffective the Steelers appear to be on offense.

I'm surprised Jim Zorn has been spreading the field this much against a tough and aggressive Pittsburgh defense. We have seen more 4-and-5 wide than ever before, even some on first down. It's a departure from the norm.

We'll see if it keeps up.

Clinton Portis came up limping at the end of quarter, after rolling his ankle, but appears to be okay.

I expect a change up at the half

Come ON, we need to get the Offense moving. I realize the Steelers are one of the best Defense teams in the game, but we could SO easily be up big right now if the offense was moving the ball just a little better.

Oh, and Loseable type needs to GO. It's AWFUL

Posted by: RGMBill | November 3, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Is this thing working?

Posted by: Curzon417 | November 3, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

I've been locked off the blog for 20 minutes, and yet I see no other messages on this thread. What's going on?

Posted by: frediefritz | November 3, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

You just can't help yourself but to be negative. We are up and sack been which you said we wouldn't and you still are negative.

Come on D, let's get a turnover; Ben's only 5 away from setting his record tonight.

I like the blog, when it's working.

Was that pass interference penalty on Rogers ligit, or no?

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | November 3, 2008 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Held them to a field go!!

Posted by: Curzon417 | November 3, 2008 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Looks like we're only going to lose 3 points on that 43 yard penalty. Now, if we can actually put together a long sustained drive....

Posted by: RGMBill | November 3, 2008 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Another sack. I think we can sack groceries tonight.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | November 3, 2008 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Alright O has to put something together now.

I didn't think it was legit until they showed the replay... then it was obvious. But yeah, it was legit.

D. Evans comin' up huge tonight.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | November 3, 2008 9:45 PM | Report abuse

The blog is officially breaking my back tonight. Election is just killing loseable type.
But twitter is working just fine, so you could go there.

Posted by: CindyBoren | November 3, 2008 9:45 PM | Report abuse

That reaks. One could only hope he gets an INT later in the game instead of another penalty.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | November 3, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Obvious Holding by the STeelers. Steelers center just grabbing Montogomery around the waist one play, tackling Washington on Blitz the next play. Blatant obvious holding.

Posted by: DownTownClown | November 3, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Was that pass interference penalty on Rogers ligit, or no?

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | November 3, 2008 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Yes. Ball was a wounded quail pass, Ward stopped and jumped, and Rogers grabbed im just before ball arrived.

Posted by: frediefritz | November 3, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse

I've never noticed. Is losable type the name of the blogging software that is used? I always thought it was named because what you type is lost in thin air.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | November 3, 2008 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Twitter?

Was that invented by Monty Python?
~

Posted by: ifthethunderdontgetya | November 3, 2008 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Karen, he's already dropped an Int tonight that would have probably been a walk in TD.

Shoot, holding... just what we DIDN'T need.

We may have more yardage in penalties than on offense; it's at least in the same ball park.

Posted by: RGMBill | November 3, 2008 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Man, these second-and-long runs are worthless.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 3, 2008 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Zorn needs to run some kind of screen.

Posted by: Curzon417 | November 3, 2008 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Now PIT gets the ball back. We have to move the ball. We are keeping them in this game or our defense has to get an INT or fumble.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 3, 2008 9:50 PM | Report abuse

vanilla offense here tonight....boo! c'mon mix it up!

Posted by: chrislarry | November 3, 2008 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Let's get a turnover here.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | November 3, 2008 9:51 PM | Report abuse

c'mon d!

Posted by: chrislarry | November 3, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Heck, we need a pic returned for a TD.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Carlos!
~

Posted by: ifthethunderdontgetya | November 3, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Would-be INT just dropped. I fear a repeat of the Rams game.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 3, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Jesus. Iron Hands Rogers strikes again.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | November 3, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 3, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Hi guys

I'm an Aussie who is just getting into NFL and have adopted the skins as my team, can someone explain to me why Pittsburgh started the game with an on-side kick, what is all that about....

I'm also only following the game on the NFL site play by play cos i'm at work (in Sydney) are we playing well???

A response would be appreciated

Posted by: LeeCarney | November 3, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Carlos Rogers.... has to be the most frustrating player of the last 2 seasons.

Posted by: mrm0to | November 3, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

And that's TWO ints he's dropped, and two walk in TDs... he's having an outstanding game, but he has hands of STONE.

Posted by: RGMBill | November 3, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

wow can carlos rodgers not catch.....

Posted by: chrislarry | November 3, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

No surprise RGM. We have to break through. I think whoever can break through first for a couple first downs will get in a groove and win this game.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | November 3, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Carlos cant catch a cold.... Still my boy though..

Carlos Rogers = The Chuck Knoblauch of Football.

Posted by: isnadd | November 3, 2008 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Aussie: if the ball goes 10 yards, it's "Live", which means the Steelers could have recovered it and had the ball to start the game, with good field position (~40 yard line). They hoped to catch the Redskins unready for an onside kick, but they made two mistakes:

The Redskins recovered.
The Steelers were offsides for the kick.

It was an attempt to get a knock out early blow.

Posted by: RGMBill | November 3, 2008 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Another 3 and out. This is frustrating.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 3, 2008 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Lee - Think they were doing the onsides kick just for some trickery to try to catch us off guard.

Skins are playing okay (IMHO) - tough defensive game. I would really like to see the offensive play with a little more spark or some more interesting play calling - think CL's the one who called it vanilla - I agree.

Great. A blocked punt. Looks like a repeat of the Rams game.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 3, 2008 9:57 PM | Report abuse

should have gone for it dmmmnt

Posted by: johnvandermyde | November 3, 2008 9:57 PM | Report abuse

Oh SH!T. Blocked Punt... I knew we should have gone for it. Now they're first down inside the 20.

Posted by: RGMBill | November 3, 2008 9:57 PM | Report abuse

How short was that 4th? Close enough for JC to just fall forward?

Posted by: mrm0to | November 3, 2008 9:57 PM | Report abuse

I kinda wish we'd gone for it on 4th and inches.

Be better than a blocked punt.
~

Posted by: ifthethunderdontgetya | November 3, 2008 9:58 PM | Report abuse

AGH! Crap - that could be the play of the game. Need to get it back or hold them to 3.

Posted by: suzannepdc | November 3, 2008 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Why do I have a feeling that I'm watching the repeat of the Rams game?

Posted by: jiacinto | November 3, 2008 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Be nice to hold them to 3 here.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | November 3, 2008 9:58 PM | Report abuse

This offense is getting worse and worse with each game. No much difference from last year's offense.

Posted by: jimluonghotmailcom | November 3, 2008 9:59 PM | Report abuse

wow thats the combination of bad plays...dropped INT for TD...not gutting out that 3rd down by cooley...and bam...

Also I was nervous on the last 3 punts....

Posted by: chrislarry | November 3, 2008 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Your crazy, the rams were not a good team, this is just a real football game.

Posted by: alex35332 | November 3, 2008 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Looks like it might be a long night... but if we can keep them to a FG, all that means is that it's tied back up.

Posted by: RGMBill | November 3, 2008 10:00 PM | Report abuse

I meant in terms of the Redskins giving a game away.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 3, 2008 10:01 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: LeeCarney | November 3, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse
They were trying to catch our front line backing up. High risk, but greatreward when it works. Someone said 5 out of 10 surprise on-side kicks have worked this year. Sometime an on-side kick is tried at end of game when a team is losing, but that is not a surprise on-side.

Posted by: frediefritz | November 3, 2008 10:02 PM | Report abuse

That sucked. Going for it would have netted the two inches we needed.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | November 3, 2008 10:02 PM | Report abuse

Looks like we have a 10-6 PIT lead coming at the start of the half and they will get the ball back to start the 3rd quarter.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 3, 2008 10:03 PM | Report abuse

C. Rogers should spend two hours a week with the second offense unit catching balls. Seriously, why not? He catches that ball and it's a 13-3 game. It's the difference between him being a very good corner and an all-pro.

Posted by: SammyT1 | November 3, 2008 10:03 PM | Report abuse

Geez Debbie Downers - have to remember that we are playing the 5-2 Steelers - who have (I think) the best defense in the League right now. Anyone's offense could look a little stale.

Posted by: suzannepdc | November 3, 2008 10:03 PM | Report abuse

Ok, so I guess we're going to have to work hard on this stand.... we should NEVER have allowed them to get it to the 1 foot line.

That was a really deflating play, even if we didn't give up the TD yet.

Posted by: RGMBill | November 3, 2008 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Zorn is playing to cautious. Play calling needs to be stepped up!

Posted by: Curzon417 | November 3, 2008 10:04 PM | Report abuse

alright Zorn, this game is about half time adjustments.

Oh, and let's fire our special teams coach!

Posted by: jimluonghotmailcom | November 3, 2008 9:59 PM |

The big difference from last year is that they're the number 8 offense in the league. Plus they're facing much tougher defenses than last year. Otherwise, you're exactly right.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 3, 2008 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Why did they waste a time out? It's only delaying the inevitable PIT TD.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 3, 2008 10:05 PM | Report abuse

We are a better second half team. We will pull it out.

JM220

Posted by: icetotalpackage | November 3, 2008 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Yep TD PIT. I feel like we just gave this game away. PIT is getting the ball 1st in the 3rd Quarter.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 3, 2008 10:06 PM | Report abuse

jiacinto, we have not given this game away. Get a drink, relax and pretend that there is still another half to play.

Posted by: Curzon417 | November 3, 2008 10:08 PM | Report abuse

you people calling the game at half time are a complete joke...wow

Posted by: chrislarry | November 3, 2008 10:08 PM | Report abuse

What a bunch of Sad Sack fans. Down by four at the half and you're all ready to give up. Pitiful.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 3, 2008 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Why couldn't JC do that on 4th down
Why
Why
Why

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | November 3, 2008 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Mofass, there is a FULL half left to play... don't count the Skins, a second half team, out quite yet. But it was a deflating sequence. And we definitely should have gone for it earlier.

Time for Zorny to get aggressive... he's being to passive again.

Posted by: RGMBill | November 3, 2008 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Ha-ha ha. Glad ya' got rid of Brooks?

Is it me or the play calling is awful? It feel like the Skins are afraid to run the ball. We are not balancing on offense. Hopefully we'll play better in the second half.

Posted by: cocodc1 | November 3, 2008 10:14 PM | Report abuse

Will someone teach Carlos Rodgers how to catch the ball. We could have had 7. His hands are always too far apart to hold onto the ball.

Posted by: abrockway | November 3, 2008 10:14 PM | Report abuse

Besides the blocked punt, a real turning point was Carlos' dropped int.... that really hurt us. He's really a fine player but he has such hands of stone. It's so hard to be down on him, but I sure wish he'd pick up a few...

Posted by: Schroeder12 | November 3, 2008 10:14 PM | Report abuse

I haven't given up. But I'm really tired of this offense.

It's all well and good for the booth to wax poetic about the WCO, but I'm almost positive there's something in their plan where you umm move the chains.

This is just bad.

Yeah, I'm glad he's gone. That blocked punt was because of blocking; not the punter.

I just think the election halftime is bogus. I'd rather see highlights of the games from yesterday. The candidates have had enough coverage. Leave our football game alone.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | November 3, 2008 10:15 PM | Report abuse

Offense getting bent over Steelers' knee and spanked like a little girl. Pathetic. Jansen needs to go. Horrible against a good pass rusher. And Rogers needs to do something to get over the drops.

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHH!

demonj21 I feel that we are trying to go to Moss too much. Get Cooley and ARE into the game. I think we can move the ball by going to them then hit Moss over the top. Jasen ass needs to block better.

Thanks for the reply's guys I thought it was weird to start a game with an onside kick but if it works 5 outta 10 then worth a try I s'pose.

With regard our dud punters, there is a booming kick in the AFL over here called Nick Davis who just got de-listed from his Australia Rules club, the bonus of him, is that being an Aussie Rules footballer he can tackle as well so would give us an added defender after the punt, apparently he is averaging 5+ sec hang time with his first punts of an NFL ball....

Get Zorn onto it, cos this punting issue could cost us come January

Posted by: LeeCarney | November 3, 2008 10:16 PM | Report abuse

We are playing a whole heck of a lot better defensively than I would have thought. Only down by four. JC is way too keyed up, though. You can see it from way out west here...really wish he'd loosen up and just go out there and have some fun.

I missed the blocked punt. I had switched over to Tina Fey hoping it would give us some good luck and we'd move the chains or something equally radical.

By the time I got back 3 minutes later, the Steelers were in the red zone.

I do think Plankmugger seems a bit better tonight. It's a good thing if we're done scoring...hehe

sorry Gringo i am in australia and just following the game from your guys comments and the NFL website play by play, plus I know bugger all about this sport have just started to fall in love with it, so if I am mistaken I'm sorry I jusst thought the blocked punt may have been the punters fault
