After a Quarter, It's 6-0 Skins
Well, we all figured on a defensive struggle, right?
Skins settled for field goals and wasted unreal field position. That could come back to haunt them ... or not, considering how ineffective the Steelers appear to be on offense.
I'm surprised Jim Zorn has been spreading the field this much against a tough and aggressive Pittsburgh defense. We have seen more 4-and-5 wide than ever before, even some on first down. It's a departure from the norm.
We'll see if it keeps up.
Clinton Portis came up limping at the end of quarter, after rolling his ankle, but appears to be okay.

Come ON, we need to get the Offense moving. I realize the Steelers are one of the best Defense teams in the game, but we could SO easily be up big right now if the offense was moving the ball just a little better.
Oh, and Loseable type needs to GO. It's AWFUL

Obvious Holding by the STeelers. Steelers center just grabbing Montogomery around the waist one play, tackling Washington on Blitz the next play. Blatant obvious holding.

Yes. Ball was a wounded quail pass, Ward stopped and jumped, and Rogers grabbed im just before ball arrived.

Karen, he's already dropped an Int tonight that would have probably been a walk in TD.
Shoot, holding... just what we DIDN'T need.
We may have more yardage in penalties than on offense; it's at least in the same ball park.

I'm an Aussie who is just getting into NFL and have adopted the skins as my team, can someone explain to me why Pittsburgh started the game with an on-side kick, what is all that about....
I'm also only following the game on the NFL site play by play cos i'm at work (in Sydney) are we playing well???

Aussie: if the ball goes 10 yards, it's "Live", which means the Steelers could have recovered it and had the ball to start the game, with good field position (~40 yard line). They hoped to catch the Redskins unready for an onside kick, but they made two mistakes:
The Redskins recovered.
The Steelers were offsides for the kick.
It was an attempt to get a knock out early blow.
Posted by: RGMBill | November 3, 2008 9:56 PM | Report abuse
Another 3 and out. This is frustrating.
Posted by: jiacinto | November 3, 2008 9:56 PM | Report abuse
Lee - Think they were doing the onsides kick just for some trickery to try to catch us off guard.
Skins are playing okay (IMHO) - tough defensive game. I would really like to see the offensive play with a little more spark or some more interesting play calling - think CL's the one who called it vanilla - I agree.

They were trying to catch our front line backing up. High risk, but greatreward when it works. Someone said 5 out of 10 surprise on-side kicks have worked this year. Sometime an on-side kick is tried at end of game when a team is losing, but that is not a surprise on-side.
Posted by: frediefritz | November 3, 2008 10:02 PM | Report abuse
That sucked. Going for it would have netted the two inches we needed.
Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | November 3, 2008 10:02 PM | Report abuse
Looks like we have a 10-6 PIT lead coming at the start of the half and they will get the ball back to start the 3rd quarter.
Posted by: jiacinto | November 3, 2008 10:03 PM | Report abuse
C. Rogers should spend two hours a week with the second offense unit catching balls. Seriously, why not? He catches that ball and it's a 13-3 game. It's the difference between him being a very good corner and an all-pro.
Posted by: SammyT1 | November 3, 2008 10:03 PM | Report abuse
Geez Debbie Downers - have to remember that we are playing the 5-2 Steelers - who have (I think) the best defense in the League right now. Anyone's offense could look a little stale.
Posted by: suzannepdc | November 3, 2008 10:03 PM | Report abuse
Ok, so I guess we're going to have to work hard on this stand.... we should NEVER have allowed them to get it to the 1 foot line.
That was a really deflating play, even if we didn't give up the TD yet.

The big difference from last year is that they're the number 8 offense in the league. Plus they're facing much tougher defenses than last year. Otherwise, you're exactly right.

Thanks for the reply's guys I thought it was weird to start a game with an onside kick but if it works 5 outta 10 then worth a try I s'pose.
With regard our dud punters, there is a booming kick in the AFL over here called Nick Davis who just got de-listed from his Australia Rules club, the bonus of him, is that being an Aussie Rules footballer he can tackle as well so would give us an added defender after the punt, apparently he is averaging 5+ sec hang time with his first punts of an NFL ball....
Get Zorn onto it, cos this punting issue could cost us come January
