Skins Lead 7-0 after a Quarter

Iron Mike Sellers is back. The fullback was featured on the first drive and caught a huge screen pass to set up fourth and one, and then caught the TD pass.

Dallas had no one on him - Sellers had just two receptions this season coming in - and kudos to Jim Zorn for using him in the passing game as Joe Gibbs used to.

Clinton Portis had a great first drive - five carries for 29 yards - and I think it's smart of Zorn to let Ladell Betts take the next drive. Both guys are dealing with knee injuries, and you need to parse out the carries.

As for defense, watch the slot guy. It's been Carlos Rogers as the slot corner and that's not his usual role. Dallas might pick on him there.

First, Romo's useless tonight. Send in Johnson, second.

FIRST, let's take care of biz.

'Skins need to put points on the board, now.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 16, 2008 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Felt a little lucky to get to that punt.

Posted by: dcsween | November 16, 2008 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Just wondering: how many picks did Leigh Torrence have this year? Hall has one!

Posted by: outsider6 | November 16, 2008 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Alex,

How's the new TV working for you? And the dark beer?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 16, 2008 9:05 PM | Report abuse

This is looking like another three and out.... where's Moss? Get it to Santana!

Posted by: RGMBill | November 16, 2008 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Portis. Exactly. Five.

Posted by: dcsween | November 16, 2008 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Make that two.

Posted by: dcsween | November 16, 2008 9:06 PM | Report abuse

And of course, second I call him out, Moss gets a (declined) penalty....

Not a good punt.

Nothing on Hall. LMAO!

We need more points. We are letting DAL stick around.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 16, 2008 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Very low punt. Durant Brooks would have had the hang time on that (in practice).

Posted by: dcsween | November 16, 2008 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Stinky offense the last two possessions

Posted by: rachel216 | November 16, 2008 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Bad punt by Plack. I think we should have kept Leigh Torrence and let him take over the punting.

Hate these 3 and outs. What gives?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 16, 2008 9:07 PM | Report abuse

D is going to take a shot down field this series.....

Sellers is the Skins leading receiver tonight.

Posted by: Wemiss21 | November 16, 2008 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Got to get Cooley some passes.

JM220

Posted by: icetotalpackage | November 16, 2008 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Two three and outs in a row when we could really use to move the ball and put some points on the board.... that doesn't bode well for later, as it means our D isn't getting the rest they need.

Posted by: RGMBill | November 16, 2008 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Folks seem to be confused the announcer who often sounds drunk is not, Sonny J.
That is Sam Huff

He gets silly, contradicts himself and sounds as if he might be getting drunk.

By the way for those interested, John Riggins last week on the pre-game radio show, was actually quite pumped and optimistic.
He said the Skins were going to beat Pittsburgh. Actually, I recall thinking to myself that Riggo was so giddy, I thought he was really drinking then!

For whatever it is worth...

How many steps back was JC on those passes? They made many yards, but not necessarily in relation to the line of scrimmage.

At the worst, the Defense has gotten a little bit of rest this drive.... but now we need to see if we can somehow get the first down and score.

JIMINY CHRISTMAS, stupid penalty. That hurts. We've just dropped out of long FG range and it's now 3-11.

Two timeouts. I'm guessing there will be a blog starter on that at the half. And that's gonna leave a mark.

Posted by: dcsween | November 16, 2008 9:20 PM | Report abuse

That little bit is going to be something that causes Zorn to go ballistic at halftime; maybe it'll light a (bigger) fire under the O.

Posted by: RGMBill | November 16, 2008 9:21 PM | Report abuse

It would be best if the Skins scored on this next play.

Posted by: chrislarry | November 16, 2008 9:23 PM | Report abuse

If that's reviewable, I'm throwing the flag. Rock fumbled (on purpose) before he crossed the plane of the end zone.

Posted by: dcsween | November 16, 2008 9:23 PM | Report abuse

If we were the NYG the referees would have said it was downed at the 1.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 16, 2008 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Even I knew it was a touchback!

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | November 16, 2008 9:27 PM | Report abuse

Did not see Campbell kicking it back at him. Sorry. My dad. No timeouts left. Jasno might notice that ... something about "clock management" ... but it was the right call at the time.

Posted by: dcsween | November 16, 2008 9:27 PM | Report abuse

first of all, why in the world would Rock touch that? It wasnt going to roll in by itself, he doesnt touch it, it's dallas ball on dallas 1

Posted by: rachel216 | November 16, 2008 9:27 PM | Report abuse

If we were the NYG the referees would have sided with us.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 16, 2008 9:27 PM | Report abuse

That was a TOTAL BULL call... these refs need to be fired, as they obviously don't know the rulebook. He was IN BOUNDS when he touched it, ending the play. After that, the play is dead, and it doesn't matter what he does.

Posted by: dl51 | November 16, 2008 9:31 PM | Report abuse

i still dont understand why Rock's original contact did not kill the ball...rock was down in thefield of play with posession of the ball.

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | November 16, 2008 9:31 PM | Report abuse

RGMBill

No, actually the ball must be downed

Secondly, it is a touchback because Rock is lying on the goal line when the ball is kicked into his backside.

It was an easy call and whichever coach told Zorn to challenge it was not using his mind or didn't know the rule at all.

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | November 16, 2008 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Sorry didn't mean to sound repetitive but it is like we never win any challenges.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 16, 2008 9:31 PM | Report abuse

what is the rule for downing the ball?

Posted by: alex35332 | November 16, 2008 9:31 PM | Report abuse

When did Tim Donaghy get a job as an NFL back judge? That decision stinks, as does the rejection of the appeal.

Jerry Jones flashed his wallet at that one.

Posted by: stevebeagrie | November 16, 2008 9:31 PM | Report abuse

1st Rock had control. 2nd the moment he grabs it and possesses it, it's dead. If ROC lets go of the ball and it hits a Cowboy, they would've ruled it touched down.... bad call.

Posted by: michael_b_clegg | November 16, 2008 9:31 PM | Report abuse

He touched the ball from the end zone. The call was correct. The limited amount of television available to the guys in the booth who have decide whether to seek review ... I dunno. I bit.

Posted by: dcsween | November 16, 2008 9:32 PM | Report abuse

as good as this game started, overall the first half was not good at all... were is the offense that we had earlier? We can't do anything

Posted by: rachel216 | November 16, 2008 9:32 PM | Report abuse

I still can't believe that call. I can understand refs getting calls wrong in the spur of the moment, on the field. But when its a challenge, not only do they have a chance to look at the play, but they have a chance to remember the rule! That was horrible

Posted by: mikeyvanilli | November 16, 2008 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, where IS the offense? Seems like every game we have one good drive and then we stall stall stall.

Posted by: fan-o-matic | November 16, 2008 9:34 PM | Report abuse

This game so far is on JC. He needs to go through his reads and let go of the ball sooner.

I can't believe that dallas is shutting down our offense. JC is doing it.

what stunk was the Skins

Posted by: bangkokben | November 16, 2008 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Schroeder12 | November 16, 2008 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Regardless of the call, they still had to drive 80 yards and did so rather easily.

Posted by: austin987654 | November 16, 2008 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Under the rules, a punted ball remains a kicked ball until it is declared dead or in possession of either team.

Posted by: learnedhand1 | November 16, 2008 9:38 PM | Report abuse

You have to control it until play is stopped. For instance, if you catch the punt at the 2, but then run into endzone, it's a touchback. The ball must be totally controlled on the field of play.

this is what happens when we waste all our timeouts, no time to get TD

Posted by: rachel216 | November 16, 2008 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Rock with a bit of redemption... he knows the rules and should not have tried to roll on that ball. A simple touch would have done it.
But an exciting return is worth a lot.

Posted by: daggar | November 16, 2008 9:40 PM | Report abuse

We are getting the ball to start the 3rd Quarter, so a FG isn't that bad of a decision here.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 16, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

coulda used a few time outs there...

Posted by: chrislarry | November 16, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Ok...way to close with points.

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | November 16, 2008 9:42 PM | Report abuse

That was absolutely horrible. The refs aren't giving the Skins any calls tonight.

Posted by: ga8085 | November 16, 2008 9:42 PM | Report abuse

10-7. We need to put this game away in the 2nd half. We have let DAL stay in this game too long.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 16, 2008 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Now that was a poor call on Portis -- he rolled OB before being touched.

Posted by: daggar | November 16, 2008 9:42 PM | Report abuse

I dont think Portis' catch was complete but whatever....

Posted by: BarackObama | November 16, 2008 9:42 PM | Report abuse

CP was out on that one. Ref really going to try and keep Dallas in this one.

And we've got the lead again. That's got to at least partially demoralize Dallas, though once again a questionable call hurt the 'Skins... Madden is saying it looks like Portis WAS out before being touched, which would have given us a shot in the endzone at the least....

Posted by: RGMBill | November 16, 2008 9:42 PM | Report abuse

When do the refs ever give the Skins any calls? Now if they were the Giants that would be another story.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 16, 2008 9:42 PM | Report abuse

CARDIAC City ....keep the brews cold

Posted by: dl51 | November 16, 2008 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Refs absolutely HORRIBLE TONIGHT!!!!!!

Posted by: michael_b_clegg | November 16, 2008 9:43 PM | Report abuse

will take the gift points though!

Posted by: chrislarry | November 16, 2008 9:43 PM | Report abuse

We didn't waste ALL our timeouts. come on.

Posted by: fan-o-matic | November 16, 2008 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Concerned about our offense. Hate to say it, but we might need to resort to trickeration. Ball isn't moving.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 16, 2008 9:41 PM

You know, if the Giants had kicked the field goal, the referees would have given them four points. They only gave us three. Some teams catch all the breaks. Not us.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 16, 2008 9:44 PM | Report abuse

good one TE!

Posted by: chrislarry | November 16, 2008 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Those points gifted by Cartwright.

Yeah Tom Coughlin is the luckiest coach in the NFL.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 16, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse

I think Roc Cart is going to break one tonight.

Posted by: icetotalpackage | November 16, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse

And it's DALLAS that always gets the calls, not the Giants anyway.... everyone knows the JJ has a slush "retirement fund" for Refs....

Posted by: RGMBill | November 16, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse

So, this is the franchise QB that everyone thinks we should give a huge $$$ contract during the off-season?

I don't see it.

Posted by: isnadd | November 16, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse

HOW MANY PASS PLAYS HAVE GONE 20+ yds in the past 3-4 games???? SOMEONE....

Posted by: michael_b_clegg | November 16, 2008 9:47 PM | Report abuse

I'd like the D to take the next Romo INT to the house.... late in the game, with the Cowboys trying to get something going to try to catch the 'Skins (who they're two score behind at the time).

That would be a nice ending.....

Posted by: RGMBill | November 16, 2008 9:48 PM | Report abuse

This game and the rest of the season is on JC. He needs to step it up and play like he did in games 2-5.

Posted by: Skins930 | November 16, 2008 9:49 PM | Report abuse

still ticked off...

Portis was clearly out before touched but since it was on the Dallas sideline the Ref caved, he tucked his tail and in fear did not make the right call.

Cost us two shots at the end zone.

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | November 16, 2008 9:50 PM | Report abuse

It was a bad deal there with the portis being in bounds but take 10-7 and get charged for the 2nd half.

Posted by: alex35332 | November 16, 2008 9:50 PM | Report abuse

michaelbclegg, I think that is what the coast game is supposed to be, but there are supposed to be more first downs.

Posted by: dcsween | November 16, 2008 9:50 PM | Report abuse

It makes me want to cut my throat watching this preschool offense. Either Campbell is terrible or the recievers don't care in the least. After a 35 second play a random Cowboy makes a sack I could have made then pounds his chest like he just made the play of a life time.

All I can do is hang my head.

Posted by: Pleepleus | November 16, 2008 9:51 PM | Report abuse

HoF beeps.
~

Posted by: ifthethunderdontgetya | November 16, 2008 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Real simple. Two totally crooked calls by three crooked and/or idiot officials. Yes, Cartwright downed. Yes CP got out of bounds. To name but a few. I think the NFL, if it cares, should examine the bank accounts of the officials in this game.

Posted by: webman2 | November 16, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Well all I can say is that the Skins' better tighten that offense up in the 2nd half. Since that first drive the offense has dried up and died. Blowing a lot of chances here that could come back and bite em.

Posted by: renaw9 | November 16, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

At least we got some good punts.
Gutsy 4th down call by Zorn, our D is laying on some licks, LaRon needs to tomahawk Romo.
HAIL!

Posted by: ILikeSonny | November 16, 2008 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Zorn needs to come with imagination in the second half, need to get Heyer some snaps for either Jansen or Samuels(playing hurt) not happy with with the offense having no timeouts as the half ends after an excellent return by Rock,TO's catch to set up touchdown by Barber looked like blown coverage help by Laron,Jason's not getting much time in the pocket(Vinny!!!) Props to Clinton for being a "real" football player you listening B-Mitch? Where's Jason Taylor, yeah i know he's playing but not effective need a big second half from the D-line LETS GO DC11 PLAY HARD FOR SEAN#21!!.

Posted by: dargregmag | November 16, 2008 9:57 PM | Report abuse

Dumb mental error, TG it went OOB.

Posted by: ILikeSonny | November 16, 2008 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Sheesh!! What else can go wrong. This game is turning fast in favor of the Boys.

Posted by: renaw9 | November 16, 2008 9:59 PM | Report abuse

trick play time.

Posted by: ILikeSonny | November 16, 2008 10:02 PM | Report abuse

Guess the D read my post.

Posted by: ILikeSonny | November 16, 2008 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Well there goes nothing. Skins better tighten their hats and jock straps now because here it comes. Pushed the envelope one too many times...
