Redskins-Saints, after One Quarter

Obviously the Skins offense looks better than it has in a long time. Jason Campbell is good in the shotgun. Had one terrible pass for Randle El, but was otherwise solid. Zorn is trying to establish the run even though its tough sledding, but in this heat I like it. He's playing for the full game early.

The Saints are getting beat up on the right side of their defense (running behind Samuels and Kendall remains the way to go). Skins ran left 4 times for 42 yards on the scoring drive (including the reverse to Moss), and the 3rd and 10 completion for 11 yards to Randle El was to the left as well.

Chris Horton getting two turnovers in his first two series as a starter is pretty special (wrote about him in Tuesday's paper). Everything going the Skins' way for now. Shockey looks lost (he had a direct role in both turnovers).

Ooh... me first!

Memo to offensive (pun intending) playcaller: Quit bringing in backups and rookies on big third downs. Google Chris Cooley and readjust.

Thank you.

Reggie Bush calls this perfect football weather? Um, it's a giant sauna.
Jason Taylor gets his first sack.

Defense EN FUEGO! Go Defense!

Posted by: sfskin | September 14, 2008 1:51 PM | Report abuse

tap tap tap mirengai sack!

I thought Horton was amazing in the preseason.

Go J. Taylor!

*DEEP SIGH*

ARE coughs up the ball on the punt return.
ppphhhppppttt

Okay go defense!

Posted by: sfskin | September 14, 2008 1:52 PM | Report abuse

Punt to Randle El, who coughs the ball right straight up into the air. Evans comes up with it. Skins lucky that wasn't six for the Saints.

Posted by: Cindy | September 14, 2008 1:53 PM | Report abuse

It's absolutely football weather. At Saints camp it was even hotter--97 or 100 at AM practice!

Gah. yay! Finally a turnover! Go Saints!

Doesn't the home team usually wear the dark uniform? I get so confused, being an LSU fan. Hmm......

Posted by: dynagirl | September 14, 2008 1:53 PM | Report abuse

saints are too good to not score td here...big bad play by are

Posted by: dealer | September 14, 2008 1:54 PM | Report abuse

jason taylor is out...i think it's his knee again

Posted by: dealer | September 14, 2008 1:55 PM | Report abuse

Nice camerawork on the Taylor injury....we'll update you asap.

Posted by: Cindy | September 14, 2008 1:56 PM | Report abuse

dyngirl, it was a strategic decision...since it's hot and all and skins had the choice...and they chose to make the saints wear a darker uni on a scorching hot day

Posted by: dealer | September 14, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

what can be done for JC to look at the whole field and not lock in on one receiver and one side of the field?

Posted by: dealer | September 14, 2008 1:43 PM

Some of the Redskins cheerleaders need to flash the Saints so they take their eyes off Campbell?

Man, I don't know. If you and I notice, I'm sure the Saints do too.

He's always lacked this ability; work on it in practice and while playing Madden and work on it. Or cut/trade him and play Collins or Colt who can already do that.

Yep agree on Saints scoring.

That's the door to the locker room?

Posted by: sfskin | September 14, 2008 1:58 PM | Report abuse

sorry but that's not a room. that's a hole. a room has to have at least one window.

Posted by: dealer | September 14, 2008 1:59 PM | Report abuse

That's actually a little treatment area. Stinchcomb brushed into him, nicked the side of Taylor's knee.

Posted by: Cindy | September 14, 2008 2:00 PM | Report abuse

Saints score TD on goal line run. Still Cyn Cyty is right we look 70% better. And I'll take that.

BTW - if you want an excellent laugh go watch the Sarah Palin Hillary Clinton skit from last night on SNL. Friggin hi-larious!

Posted by: sfskin | September 14, 2008 2:01 PM | Report abuse

sfskin, no that's a door to a hole. i'm thinking there might be a toilet in there too. so it's probly a bathroom.

Posted by: dealer | September 14, 2008 2:01 PM | Report abuse

thanks randel el. another dude who just talks and acts like a jackass on the field but does nothing to help us win.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 14, 2008 2:03 PM | Report abuse

a fg here and skins will be up again unless cp can break one...

Posted by: dealer | September 14, 2008 2:03 PM | Report abuse

Maybe it's my hangover but the offense looks like crap! Don't forget, this is a terrible secondary and they're minus 3 starters on DEF. There is no excuse to look like this in our home opener against this team.

The defense came to play. The offense didn't. Get Cooley in the game! *head spin*

Ouch.

Posted by: Jenna | September 14, 2008 2:06 PM | Report abuse

cp's got to break another one like that...for a td

Posted by: dealer | September 14, 2008 2:07 PM | Report abuse

jenna, no you're very accurate. though i would like to blame it all on jc. even the announcers are saying "he's late", "he's locked in on one side"...

Posted by: dealer | September 14, 2008 2:09 PM | Report abuse

I think this guy Brian Billick is really annoying. He's got nothing as an announcer.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 14, 2008 2:09 PM | Report abuse

i'll take the fg...and let the best half of your team do it's thing

Posted by: dealer | September 14, 2008 2:09 PM | Report abuse

Bad hold.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 14, 2008 2:10 PM | Report abuse

they missed a chipshot field goal...now the defense has to score too to win

Posted by: dealer | September 14, 2008 2:10 PM | Report abuse

Beep beep

Posted by: Cindy | September 14, 2008 2:11 PM | Report abuse

Hmm I think offense looks okay in that they are clearly far more comfortable than last week. Are they doing some dumb things like that missed FG right now but I don't feel like I'm watching JV football this week.

I guess having dramatically low expectations makes it easier to feel this way.

Man I LOVE watching football on a 46" screen!

Posted by: sfskin | September 14, 2008 2:11 PM | Report abuse

I'm I seeing this right. A missed 30 yd FG? WTF??

Posted by: ga8085 | September 14, 2008 2:11 PM | Report abuse

keep settling for attempted FG instead of TD and this sort of crap will occur

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | September 14, 2008 2:11 PM | Report abuse

We need to get rid of that damn kicer

Posted by: Cheyenne, WY | September 14, 2008 2:11 PM | Report abuse

I'm better than this Suisham guy.

Posted by: Chip Lohmiller | September 14, 2008 2:12 PM | Report abuse

The I is the most balanced formation in football; sucks defenders into the middle, not forgetting the FB up the middle play to keep'em honest(which few teams do anymore). Campbell blows.

Posted by: Realness | September 14, 2008 2:12 PM | Report abuse

This Suisham guy stinks.

Posted by: Chip Lohmiller | September 14, 2008 2:13 PM | Report abuse

The Saints right now have a 0% 3rd down conversion rate. Telling stat? Red zone efficiency. They have it. Skins do not.

Posted by: DeLorean | September 14, 2008 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Tell me how we gave up three points in the last minute. Erg.

Posted by: DeLorean | September 14, 2008 2:33 PM | Report abuse

I so don't get people thinking the offense looks better! The playcalling is ghastly, Thrash isn't going to make the killer play - ever, JC is locking and missing and taking too long, Portis is ok but the Saints are losing DEF starters everytime they line up, Swish is swishing and I'll never understand why he didn't have competition for his job, and my head still hurts.

Great DEF effort being wasted.

Oh and that stat about throwing to 8 different receivers? When you try that, you end up looked like Brady and the Patriots - or the Skins attempting the Fun 'n Gun. Go with the guys who got us here!
