Redskins lose 30-16

Updated: 7:40 p.m.
Fourth Quarter

Last season, the Redskins lost to a terrible Detroit Lions team in
Week 3 and never recovered. With a new head coach wearing the headset
a year later, the Redskins fell to the lowly St. Louis Rams, 30-16
Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome. They'll return home with a 1-2 record
and hope they can bounce back better than Jim Zorn's group did a year
ago.

Entering Sunday's game, the Rams had won just once in their previous
27 outings and had a 6-44 record in their previous 50 games. Needless
to say, Sunday marked their first win of the season and only their
second since October 2008.

The Rams dug a hole for the Redskins at the start of the fourth quarter,
and Washington could never climb out. Josh Brown kicked a 37-yard
field 3 1/2 minutes into the final quarter to make it 24-16, giving
the Rams a two-possession lead.

Even with an injured Steven Jackson watching from the sidelines, the
St. Louis offense was able to control the clock throughout the fourth
quarter and keep the Washington defense on the field (The Rams won the
time of possession battle, 34:50 to 25:10).

Brown added a 29-yard field goal for the Rams with 4:22 remaining to extend the Rams' lead to 11. He added a 36-yarder with 1:44 left to provide the final score.

The Redskins' offense, meanwhile, struggled to find any semblance of
rhythm. Late in the quarter, on their second-to-last offensive
possession, the Redskins had a first-down pass called back because of
a false start penalty on Kory Lichtensteiger. On second-and-15,
McNabb felt pressure from the right side and forced a bad pass. St.
Louis cornerback Bradley Fletcher was there for the interception. He
returned it four yards to the Washington 41-yard line, effectively
killing the Redskins' hopes.

For the second week in a row, the Redskins struggled to run the ball
in the second half. After posting a season-high 115 rushing yards in
the first half, the Redskins had only one rushing yard on five carries
in the final two quarters. Ryan Torain, activated from the practice
squad a day earlier, had three second half carries to one by starting running back Clinton Portis. .

Third quarter

The Redskins appeared to take the momentum gained from the second quarter and carry it into the third. On the first play from scrimmage, Donovan McNabb found receiver Santana Moss near the right sideline for a 56-yard gain. A subsequent penalty moved the Redskins into a first-and-goal situation from the Rams' 8.

But from there, the Redskins again couldn't get to the end zone. Mike Sellers managed a yard, Ryan Torain five more, but on third down, Clinton Portis lost a yard while trying to run right. The Redskins did, however, take the lead for the first time when Graham Gano booted a 21-yard field goal, his third field goal of the game, and Washington went up 16-14.

The lead was short-lived. The Rams went on a 74-yard touchdown drive that included an 18-yard pass from Sam Bradford to tight end Fendi Onobun on second and 15, a 12-yard pass from Bradford to tight end Daniel Fells on third and 10, and a seven-yard pass from Bradford to receiver Mardy Gilyard on third and 7. Running back Kenneth Darby - one of the replacements for the injured Steven Jackson - scored from 12 yards out with 7:15 remaining, and the Rams led again, 21-16.

The Redskins, conversely, could not convert a big third down on their next possession. On third and 11, McNabb evaded pressure and looked to receiver Roydell Williams on the right sideline, but Williams couldn't handle the pass.

The teams then traded three-and-out possessions, including three straight incompletions for McNabb. When the quarter ended, the Rams had a 21-16 lead and the ball in Redskins' territory.

Second Quarter

The Redskins needed less than a minute to turn a 14-point deficit into a four-point game, but the Rams still managed to take a slim 14-13 lead into the half.

In the second quarter's opening seconds, Graham Gano kicked a 29-yard field goal to put the Redskins on the scoreboard, and the Rams' Mardy Gilyard then fumbled the ensuing return. Reed Doughty popped the ball loose and Lorenzo Alexander recovered on the Rams' 21 yard line.

On the first play from scrimmage, Donovan McNabb hit Santana Moss in the end zone to make it a one possession game, 14-10.

The St. Louis offense struggled moving the ball and the Redskins' defense didn't need to spend much time on the field. Meanwhile, the Redskins running game showed signs of life for the first time this season. The team entered the game with 107 net rushing yards through two games; against the Rams, Washington had 115 through the first two quarters.

Running back Ryan Torain, activated from the practice squad just one day earlier, had his first carry since 2008 -- and he made the most of it. His 37-yard run was longer than all but one run Clinton Portis has had since the 2006 season.

Torain put the Redskins in St. Louis territory, and Donovan McNabb's 26-yard scramble put them in the red zone. The Redskins had to settle for a 24-yard field goal from
Gano to cut the Rams' lead to 14-13 midway through the quarter.

On their final possession of the half, the Rams put together a 79-yard drive that reached the Redskins' 1-yard line. But they failed to punch in the touchdown and Washington's Phillip Daniels blocked Josh Brown 21-yard field goal attempt.

First Quarter
The game opened poorly for the Redskins when place kicker Graham Gano booted the opening kickoff out of bounds - handing the Rams the ball at their own 40 yard line. They moved into Redskins territory largely on the running of star back Steven Jackson, and faced a fourth-and-inches from the Washington 40. Rams Coach Steve Spagnuolo elected to go for it, and fullback Mike Kearney easily converted, giving the Rams a first down at the Washington 38.

From there, it was Jackson. First came a four-yard loss at the hands of Redskins safety LaRon Landry. But on the next play, Jackson started right, evaded a tackle by Redskins safety Kareem Moore, and then sprinted all the way to the left corner of the end zone - a 42-yard touchdown run that sparked the small crowd at the Edward Jones Dome and gave St. Louis a 7-0 lead.

The lead grew to 14-0 only three minutes later. Wideout Santana Moss fumbled a completion on Washington's first possession - a strip by linebacker Larry Grant that safety James Butler returned to the Redskins 3. Two plays later, St. Louis quarterback Sam Bradford executed a nice bootleg, drawing cornerback DeAngelo Hall out of coverage and flipping the ball to tight end Daniel Fells for a 3-yard touchdown pass. Just 6:12 into the game, the Redskins were stunned.

More stunning: Gano, subbing for regular punter Josh Bidwell - who was injured in warm-ups - had his first punt blocked by St. Louis receiver Dominique Curry, who got into the backfield after backup running back Keiland Williams whiffed on a block.

Moore, though, helped erase that mistake by intercepting a Bradford pass on the next play. Redskins running back Clinton Portis then ripped off a 27-yard run - but inexplicably fell down near midfield. The Redskins couldn't gain another first down, and the biggest relief for Washington was that Gano's next punt - a 31-yarder - got off without incident.

The Redskins forced a three-and-out from the Rams, and the quarter ended with Washington on the move. Quarterback Donovan McNabb looked deep for tight end Fred Davis. St. Louis defensive back Bradley Fletcher was called for interference on the play, a 39-yard penalty that gave the Redskins a first down at the St. Louis 14.

We need a long drive with a mix of pass and run.

We shouldn't fear the rams' offense as what points the team has cored came off redskin mistakes.

We get 10 points and this game is over.

Skins win.

By the way Skins rushing in first half more yards than the entire two first two games!!

Torain and Portis both have 45 yards

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | September 26, 2010 5:55 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Portis came out of the game because he was exhausted after that long-ish run, a la Hayneworth.

Exhaustion would also explain why he "purposefully" went down. Ryan Torain's first carry since 2008 (37 yards) was longer than all but one run Portis has had since the 2006 season.

That tells you how long the run game has been sucking.

I haven't been able to watch the game, but since we're losing to the freaking RAMS, I'd almost have to agree with the idiot Pabrain. We play down to our competition - our problem for the past decade or so - and whoever decided our defense was a 3-4 and didn't need another safety was a freaking fool. I can only imagine if St Louis was healthy - they'd be crushing us because we suck. With or Without TWill, we should be crushing them. The fact that we're not means the same problems reign supreme w/ this team.

AND A 43 D THAT WAS TOP 10 THE LAST FEW YEARS HAVE NOW BECOME A 34 D WITH A 43 PERSONNEL. AND NOW WE ARE LAST IN THE NFL ON D?
GOOD TEAMS FIND WAYS TO WIN, AND LOSERS FIND WAYS TO LOSE. FROM THE BEGINNING OF THIS GAME, THE SKINS FROM THE PLAYERS TO THE COACHES WERE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO LOSE THIS GAME.

The defense is ATROCIOUS. They couldn't stop me or you!!!

Doesn't matter how many point the offense scores, they can't get any stops!!! Much less against a rookie QB. Imagine the games against Peyton, Aaron Rodgers, Mike Vick, Jay Cutler... they are going to throw for 500+ yards every game. The defense is a humongous problem. We'd be better off with Greg Blache's defense.

You don't know his point. He defends AH, DHall, Portis, Jason Campbell, Vinny and Zorn. His football IQ is less than his actual IQ.

The problem with this team is the roster. MS inherited it and it's going to take more than an offseason to turn it around.

This is now two weeks in a row that Jim Haslet's defense has been taken to the woodshed you might be able to give him a pass on the Texans(not really when the offense gives you a 17 point second half lead!) but a rookie QB with no weapons their best running back injured for the entire second half and the QB is going up and down the field, this coaching staff is not doing a good job, so far Haslet has some explaining to do. Donovan McNabb has no weapons other than Santana Moss, if Mike Shannahan is trying to send a message to Devin Thomas by playing a washed up Joey Galloway it's not working bottom line this team got exposed today especially on defense.

I MAY NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT FOOTBALL BUT IF YOUR LT IS A BACKUP WHO LIKES TO HOLD ON PASSING PLAYS, YOU SHOULD RUN THE BALL MORE NO? WITH YOUR BEST BACK TOO ON TOP OF THAT?
I JUST LOVE THE WAY A TEAM THAT HAS ONLY WON ONE GAME FOR THEIR COACH IN 2 YEARS IS ABOUT TO GET THEIR 2ND AGAINST THE SKINS. I JUST LOVE THE WAY A ROOKIE QB IS TEARING THIS SUPPOSEDLY NEW AND IMPROVE D APART WITH PLAYERS BEING FORCED TO PLAY POSITIONS THEY HAVE NO BUSINESS PLAYING. THIS IS A TEAM WITH 43 PLAYERS ON D AND NOT 34 PLAYERS. THEN WE WONDER WHY WE CAN'T STOP ANYONE?

Posted by: aaronharman | September 26, 2010 7:16 PM | Report abuse

The defense is terrible we don't have the people to run a 3-4. Why switch to the 3-4 when we added basically 1 guy?

Shannahan trying to be Napolienistic with DT and AH is proving nothing but letting talent rot and take up roster spots.

Posted by: Joker99z | September 26, 2010 7:16 PM | Report abuse

The last time the Rams won a game was against the Skins...

We're supposed to have a genius for a head coach and a d-coordinator who "gets after it" with aggressive schemes...?

And the Rams are playing a rookie QB...?

This team is stuck in the culture of losing - it's indisputable. Maybe the answer is for Snyder to move the team to LA and then get a new expansion team and just start all over...

Shanahan should have the coaching staff and players and owner wear paper bags all next week. They should donate their gamechecks to charity. Despite the horrid play of years past, to have to watch this after the supposed genius arrived and the front office retooled...is just a farce.

I officially hate the 3-4 defense and Jim Haslett. Secondary is awful. Heyer doesn't belong on an NFL roster. Rabach gets blown up regularly. If I'm Donovan Mcnabb, no way I'm resigning here. Minnesota and Arizona looking like perfect destinations over this talentless rebuild situation.

All in all, a very Zorn-like team performance. Exactly like the Detroit game last year. Rookie QB, awful opponent, no emotion, defense can't get off the field, failure to score TDs in the red zone. Exactly the same result.

Oh, and BTW, Haynesworth has been invisible. Fletcher caught out of position MANY times. Holes a mile wide in the middle of the field, just like last week.

Back to the drawing board.

No Diesel - this team inherited a fine defense (not great, but very fine)- and the DC Haslett turned it into a bunch of losers. When a rookie QB with NO weapons can beat us to shreds we have a big problem.

And Pabrain was not defending the morons from the past coaching staff - he was making the point that we are no farther along than we were with the morons. When you give up nearly 30 points to a rookie QB without any weapons, there is no way you can say we are further along than we were at this time last year even though we sucked hairy balls last year. With or without TWill, when you can't outscore what is supposed to be a putrid offense, you are no further along than you were last year. Due to bad coaching we still suck. No other way to put it.

Shanahan just would not let this thing go with Albert. They should have cut him from the get go.

Not incoporating Albert into the fold once he returned back to the team/defense sent the wrong message/chemistry to a defense that needed his exceptional play.

Now Big Al is an ineffective player for the defense. He is ineffective and they should have cut him rather than have Shanahan handle the situation the way he did.

This defense sucks, they are not stopping the run or the pass and Shanahan thought he could be cute with Big Al.

This defense needed every man standing tall to make them all better.

Orakpo needed a Big Al to open things for him on a full-time gameplan and not this part-time crap they have Big Al doing.

I am pissed.

Posted by: chris37 | September 26, 2010 7:20 PM | Report abuse

Well, I guess the truth hurts. But this should be no surprise. The new management had to get rid of 1/2 the team from last year. The problem was they needed to get rid of 3/4 of the team. The problem then is who is left to play. Well S.Hayer, C.Rogers, Dockery, Davis, M.Kelly need to be off this team as well. Next year I perdict that half of these guys will not be here. Hall, Portis,Hanyesworth, Bucannon may follow. Shanney will get the team going in right direction but we need new players that have not been exposed to this "losing curse" the skins have been under for the past 15 years. I would rather see the team lose every game now if it means we can see the new Redskins players we have start to learn how to play the right way. This will not be a good year folks. This game should prove that Shanney does not have a lot to work with. I really hope that the glaring weakness that are the "Same old current vets skins" continue to show the whole world that their time is done in DC. We need to start younger players and get them started on the right pace for a good NFL path. The time for excuses are over now. For "Some "of You veteran players (and you know who you are) you should to be ashamed of your selves. You are not football players. Football players at least try to improve. Shanney will get the ship right but it will take at least 2 years.

The skins played down to their competition. They have Vick and the Eagles next week. They better step up. The defense looks terrible in every sense of the game. We not only got outplayed and played pathetically overall, but what I thought was most disturbing was how we got completely out coached on both sides of the ball. This game reminded me of the Zorn era. Sorry, but it was painfully obvious what they were doing on offense - quick pass 1-10 yds down the the field and we had no answers. And, our offensive play calling got completely lopsided unnecessarily allowing them to tee off on a still suspect offensive line. Without Williams our O-line goes from average at best to bad. Oh, wait, that might have something to do with being one of the least deep teams in the NFL STILL.

They have to make adjustments to the starting roster, particularly on defense. This is ridiculous. I figured the 3-4 will take some time to gel, but this is really bad. Also, I'm not understanding the benching of CP thing, no Devin on offense. Just poor, poor, poor.

Diesel - there is no way you can defend this defense. Absolutely none - instead of being 10th in yards allowed and decent in points allowed - we are just about dead last in both categories. And it doesn't freaking matter who our QB is when we can't get a freaking stop against a PATHETIC team.

Can you honestly say we're better than we were last year when this team has the exact same problems:

-being outcoached
-coaching staff believing making a point is better than putting your best players in position to succeed
-having coaches put players out of position
-not getting a stop when needed on defense
-not getting a 1st down when needed on offense
-no pressure from our front 3/4 on defense
-playing down to our competition

I mean really - need I go on? We still have the same problems as last year - and that fact shows we are no better than last year. What difference does it make if our offense can score 27 points if our defense gives up 30 anyways? The only diff btw this year and last year is our offense sucked (scored maybe 14) while our defense was better (allowed 17), instead of 27 and 30, respectively.

As for the Shanahans, they need to get Devin Thomas on the field as a WR ASAP.

Thomas cannot be any less of a presence than Galloway/Williams have been through the first three weeks.

Not defending the D or the switch to a 3-4. I was very critical of trading for McNabb...They went from rebuilding to win-now with a roster that needed to be rebuilt.

This roster is near the bottom as far as talent. Yes this team would have a similar record right now (possibly 0-3) with last year's FO and personnel but it's about building for the future and that can't happen without change.

I am optimistic and that was clear when I said two months that we would go 8-8. They got outcoached, outplayed and got beat, but I'm not pining for last years team, coaching staff, or front office.

very predictable defense, Haslett should be fired

we did everything but upgrade our line, 1 position (trent) not enough, Brown no better than Heyer, Hicks no better than Williams, Dockery no better than Lichtensteiger.

Turning a top ranked 4-3 into a last ranked 3-4, making dominant players obsolete. Deception? we're the most predictable D I've ever seen.

100% blame on shan-a-zorn, Zorn-aslett, and mcSoupster, but ultimately Danny for making the big splash vs. getting better

shanahan and haslett are 2 a-holes and losers, this o-line is getting hog whuppped at the line of scrimmage and yet that get rid of e. williams a young quick blocker(I dont care if he does not have the experience at line calls let the qb call them until he learns)and leave the weakling rabach at center along with another weakling litchensteiger, he does not play d. thomas he released banks put austin on practice squad and starts galloway at 38yrs and r. williams(I never heard of him until the bought him in) the defense was overrated last year now they are worst with haslett who had a horrible D his years at new orleans. the eagles will whip the hell out of this team next week. I never did drink the kool-aid from shanahan I knew there was a good chance he was on his way down the last few yrs in the league.

I am surprised that people are shocked at the performance of the defense. Haslett has never been a great defensive coordinator.

He forced a switch to the 3-4 in which they did not have personnel. They were at odds with their best defensive lineman from last year.

hey pabrian.. I'm here to tell you that you do have a point and I'm sorry for kinda killing you all week and saying you're just a hater. Truth is you do have a good point.

We need to blow this team up and build it back. Cerrato has held this team back for years by giving away all our draft picks or just making stupid picks. Who are we fooling if we think we can get an all-pro QB and a new coach and all our problems would be covered up? Both sides of the line are old, we need a new RB and new recievers... the culture of this team needs to change. It's the same crap every single year. This team is all talk, no show. They have absolutely no reason to be playing up or down to any team. They have no passion whatsoever. St. Louis outplayed us, outcoached us.. everything. That was a team that was out there to win. I didn't see that from the Redskins.

It's no coincidence that a team like Pittsburgh (a first class organization) could lose their franchise QB and still be 3-0. I like McNabb but I'm starting to wish we drafted a young QB instead. We are years away from contending. We'd be better off starting over. If I was a Rams fan I'd be very excited. They are heading in the right direction. Us, I don't have a clue what we're doing or what direction we're going.

Redskins Nation - Miss Jim Zorn yet? Like I've been saying for three years now - we don't have an offensive line. Unless Allen and Shanahan fix the offensive line, the Redskins will continue to get beat by lowly teams like the Rams.

Ahhhhh!!!!

Posted by: SkinsFan2111 | September 26, 2010 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Diesel - seriously, the only reason this roster is near the bottom in talent is because we're not using what little talent we have. When you don't put your players in a position to win, they're gonna look like Poop's post's - like fat donkey balls. How much more clear can I be in that? You can make all the excuses you want, but if this team's offseason moves were really upgrades (only TWill, and maybe GM Bruce Allen, can be justifiably called an upgrade), then it should show on the field with maximizing the talent we have. As always, instead of maximizing the talent we have, our coaches minimize it - that is the culture and logic of a LOSING team; and there is NO WAY you can call this a winning team. You still haven't given me a real reason as to why it was intelligent to go to a 3-4 when 95% of our defensive players fit a 4-3. Yes changes had to be made over last year, and it will take a while, but if our coaching improved we wouldn't have gotten our butts whooped today, our defense wouldn't be giving up half a thousand yards every game, and our young talent, no matter how unreliable, would be on the field showing what they can or can't do - they can be absolutely no worse than the AARP players out there now.

Again, if our team were improved then at least the coaching issues would be gone/minimized/lessened/etc. and they were NOT. This game today just proves that we have the same coaching issues and problems that we had last year, which = NO upgrade.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | September 26, 2010 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Our D is the worst in the league. If we can't stop Bradford and 2nd rate wr's with their best offensive weapon out of the game I wonder how we'll do against, Eagles, Packers, Colts, Bears...at least we'll get a good draft pick.

Anyone have a take on tonight's epic fail?

I do.

1) This defense is atrocious - It is alarmingly clear that our opener against dallas was an abberation; not that we played knock down defense in that game as much as the 'Girls screwed the pooch. But there's no excuse for coughing up 30 points to the Rams who played WITHOUT S.Jackson for most of the game. Defense = Failure.

2) The run game is atrocious - Did anyone notice how Clinton Portis ripped off a run, got into the open field and then decided to dive to the ground? WTH? Ryan Torain finally provided a bit of spark, but the shuffling on the line and the run-blocking is a disaster. I guess Kory Lichtensteiger isn't the answer, eh?

3) Stephon Heyer still sucks - Thanks for the Alex Barron impression, Steph. Halloween is still about a month or so off.

4) This team is DMac dependent - If he's off we lose; if he's on we win. TOnight he was off and, personally, I think he was looking past this game and thinking ahead to Philly. But no other aspect of this team is prepared to step up.

3 games into the season...

Shanaplan = Failure

Granted it's early, but if we're judging based on product and not potential or good-will, then that's where it is at so far.

"Diesel - there is no way you can defend this defense. Absolutely none - instead of being 10th in yards allowed and decent in points allowed - we are just about dead last in both categories. And it doesn't freaking matter who our QB is when we can't get a freaking stop against a PATHETIC team."

Everyone in the front seven is playing out of his regular position and the CBs suck. The outside LBs are linemen, for God's sake.

The sad part is, with these personnel it would be a much better 4-3 team.

Oh and with a decent defensive coordinator.

Yeah 4-12 looks very doable.

This was DeAngelo Hall showing us why all the other teams he played for got rid of him. He was the primary target on almost all of the big plays the Rams pulled off. Breaking coverage for a touchdown, numerous first down receptions by his receivers the usual avoidance of tackles all wrapped up in the man who was going to cover the best receiver no matter what the coaches said.

I posted something similar to this before the season and caught a bunch of crap. I did not agree with the trade for McNabb. While he is an improvement the team had too many other holes to be giving up the picks. They have now ensured 3 years mediocrity followed by trying to find a franchise qb.

Posted by: srobert1117 | September 26, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

It's obviously going to take more than 3 games to get this defense playing together under a new system but they look just awful. I'd like to think it's the system but it may be the talent. Or the system not using the talent correctly.

Those third down conversions from a rookie QB throwing to marginal talent was just demoralizing.

That second half was really depressing. The team looked old and tired and just not ready to play. Just like the past couple of years.

And it's only Week #3.

Well, this was what Shanahan and Allen were hired for: to fix the problems.

On 106 the fan today a point was made that Big Al was making a big deal out of playing nose tackle 3-4 v. dtackle 4-3 and it really wasn't a big deal and Big Al took the money and should just play.

Now it is clearly evident that there is a big difference between the 3/4 and 4/3 and the difference is you have to the right personnel to play the 3/4.

That is what Big Al has been saying all along. The Redskins right now as of this moment do not have the personnel to play the 3/4 but they do have the personnel to play a 4/3.

The D was pretty good at the 4/3 including Big Al but now they suck at the 3/4 because they don't have the right personnel to play it.

Big Al ain't so stupid after all people.

Looking at this roster of holes as you put it- there is no reason McNabb is an upgrade. He's an opportunity to lessen the players we can draft in both place and # while we rebuild. That's it. You name a bunch of holes - explain to me how having a decent QB who will leave once we become genuinely good is an upgrade? Jammal is questionable as an upgrade simply because of the same thing - spent draft picks and he may not even be here when we turn freaking decent.

KS is NOT an upgrade when we don't use the talent we have and have the same ultraconservative shotty red-zone playcalling. Jim Has-NOT is a severe downgrade. MS is only an upgrade when he has an extremely good DC and Haslett does not fit that bill.

Like I said before TWill and Bruce Allen are the only SURE upgrades of the offseason. Haslett is worse than I am, MS is only an upgrade w/ a good DC - so that negates any upgrade potential he had - McNabb and Brown required too many draft picks and my not be here when we turn good, KS is getting Zorn-syndrome on playcalling - so he's not proven himself to be an upgrade. Tell me aside from TWill and BA, who are the real unquestioned upgrades?

OK, I've calmed down now. I've found my medium. Still too much evaluation going on with the offense. Settle on a LG, settle on a RB. The defense, particularly the secondary, seems confused on 3rd downs. The defense has to work on passing on the short passing game, it's what beat them the last two weeks.

I've also been very critical of the 2008 draft (the evening of the draft), the 2009 draft outside of the obvious pick of Orakpo, and this year's draft outside of TW.

Positives - few that they are, but worth mentioning.

1) S.Moss looks ressurrected with DMac.

2) Fred Davis seemed a little more involved in the passing game, though it didn't show on the stat sheet.

3) Torain looks like he can give a spark in the run game. Nothing can be done when the Oline collapses into the backfield and the run gets stuffed; but he has the power and explosiveness that Portis lacks going forward. Where Portis falls forward for a yard on first contact, Torain tries to plow forward, find a crease, just do something to get something out of the carry.

4) Nice to see Moore come back and make a big play in the secondary at a crucial time to steal some momentum back.

5) Devin Thomas is bringing it on kick returns (muffs aside).

Defense talk is all correct but our offense is almost there. We failed to get 7's in the redzone and left 12 points on the field. then again I'll say 9 points because we seem to get a lot of kicks blocked. Scoring touchdowns would change the game and our defense can play with some heart. Our defense is bad but they are still learning the 3-4 dont be so quick to judge. I say we get a Wr like Vincent Jackson if we can get him cheaper then a 2nd round pick ex. 3rd rounder and DT and another late pick for him do it. We also need to keep running Torain when our big boy Trent Williams comes back.

Trading any picks for an over 30 player on this team with a lock out coming is the height of stupidity.

The D needs to be built around D hall, LL, and Po. Those are the only guys who will be starting 4 years from now on D.

But at least we did not give up 2 TDs on kick returns like the Chargers.

In the off season I said the D would take a big step back this year with the switch to the 3-4 because the team did not have the personnel on the roster to run it. That it was bad for the D's best player. Just about everyone sided with mgmt. See what arrogance has wrought?

the 2nd rounder we traded for New Soup should've been used for the O line or Running Backs

Man, giving up 30 points to the lowly Rams?!?!?!

The Redskins suck worse than DC United.

Anger, despair, disappointment, discouragement, take your pick if you are a Redskin fan like me. It does not matter who coaches or who is the quarterback. I used to make fun of fairweather fans..but now I think they will all live longer--and much happier lives. It does not matter that the team has a proud history or that we honor our former players, we have a proven new GM now--so what, it all means nothing.

Like many fans, I just can't take the beating anymore. 106.7 the fan, Washington Post articles, Comcast sportsnet, ESPN, they will all bombard me with negatives about the Redskins and they will ALL be right! We will never have enough linemen, the right running back who will play the whole game and shut his mouth, a good defensive line, enough fast wide receivers, its a big pile of demoralizing.... Hazlett and McNabb were mistakes. We heard about rebuilding and got a load of "win now" which is like building our house on the sand. There is no foundation.

LaVar and Chad, Portis and Cooley, all you talking heads and millionaires..
keep chattering..it means nothing, we are overloaded with hype and negativity. Haynesworth still gets his money, Dan gets his money, all the players and coaches get the money.the media gets the money..the fan gets despair.

The O is not almost anywhere. Can't score TDs with out help.

Except against the Texans and they make Romo look like an all pro.

Mul123:

"the D needs to be built around D Hall"

Are you friggin' crazy? That guy couldn't cover a trash can holding the lid with both hands. The D needs to be blown up and started from scratch. They've been giving away games for years. This is nothing new. They're a bunch of Snyder hand-selected over-hyped prima donnas. All of them.

My take although it's similar to what's out here already. I said last week that Heyer is not NFL caliber. This week proved it. He is not an effective player at all. But he's not the only one that has dog crap on his shoes. Mr. All world cover corner, good old DeAngelo Hall had a very underwhelming performance. Nice to see that he really backed up his BS that he was saying last Monday. Another point, this defense is not good. You could say it's the 3-4 scheme but on base running plays they are not getting the push that one would think. This could be a call issue but honestly, they were leaving the Rams in very manageable down and distance situations today. All I can really say is thank God we have a GM now and a coach who are going to try to develop talent because Snyder and his former stooge Cerrato definitely left the cupboard bare. It may take Shanahan all 5 years to undo the damage Cerrato has done.

From a perennail top 10 defense to last in the league and making another Rookie QB look like a proven winner.

If good coaches are supposed to adjust their scheme to the available talent, what does that make Haslett?

Last week Houston burned our blitzes with screen passes. Too bad we didn't learn from that and throw some of our own screens today.

Sorry if this topic has been covered locally, but I am down in Alabama for college missing the inside info on the team. Why hasn't Devin Thomas been getting any reps at wide receiver? He obviously is a physical specimen. Is he still having trouble learning offenses?

I think am going to Vegas and bet my HOUSE yes my HOUSE, that Vick will throw for over 500 Yards on us yes 500 yards. Again Fire HASLETT that's why he was in the arena league.
