Fletcher named a Walter Payton Award finalist

Redskins linebacker London Fletcher has been named a finalist for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, given annually to an NFL player for community service as well as on-the-field performance.

Each team nominates a player and Fletcher was the Redskins' choice in 2008 as well. Other finalists this year are Mike Furrey of the Cleveland Browns and Brian Waters of the Kansas City Chiefs.

"I'm extremely humbled by being one of the three finalists," Fletcher said in a statement released by the Redskins. "Each team submits all their individual 'Men of the Year' candidates, so out of 32 players I'm one of three who's been selected to be the Walter Payton Man of the Year, so truly I'm humbled and honored."

The winner will be announced before kickoff of Super Bowl XLIV. He will be chosen by a panel consisting of Commissioner Roger Goodell, former commissioner Paul Tagliabue, Connie Payton, Frank Gifford, Anthony Munoz, NFL Alumni Association executive director George Martin, Kurt Warner and Peter King of Sports Illustrated.

"It's extremely special. Walter Payton, I looked up to him when I was a youngster back in elementary school and junior high," Fletcher said. "I remember the way he was as a player and also the things he did off the field. To be mentioned as a finalist for an award named after him makes it even more special."

Swiss-ham only made 1 FG beyond 40 yards and that was when the Girls were leading the Iggles 31-7. On the other hand, Feely came in to punt against the Bengals. Feely made 40+ FGs while the Jets were trailing, something Swiss-ham did not do at all. In fact, if it wasn't nullified by penalties, Feely would have been credited with 1 more 40+ FG.

------------------------

Swiss-ham would've been 0/3. He can't make anything beyond 40 yards.

Unlike Swiss-ham, Jay Feeley makes pressure-situation field goals.

Jay Feeley's choking like Sadam Hussain when they hung him. And you say "Swiss-ham would have choked more?" Give it up. You got nothing at all.

And Feeley cost the Jets games -- in week 15 the Jets lost 10-7 after Feeley missed two FG's. Nearly knocked the Jets out of the playoffs. Guy's a choker. He's missed two FG's today. Guy can't get it done when it counts.

Posted by: League-Source | January 24, 2010 5:54 PM | Report abuse

The Jets were overmatched. Indy's defense better than some thought. Sanchez's play pretty good for a ROOKIE in his first year.

The shot on the sidelines of him sitting there, I thought maybe he caught something (the JC stare), but maybe not.

I don't think he has anything to be ashamed about. I guess we will know the next few years.

Just an old rookie's thoughts on what these old eyes actually saw.

Swiss-ham never made a 40+ FG while trailing this postseason. I'm going to start arguing with you anyways because it's a moot point.

Probably just as well that you stop since you started by talking about how Feeley is good in pressure situations. Then, he missed two in the biggest game of the season. Plus he'd missed two in the second biggest game of the season. So, instead of just saying "Oops! I spoke too soon" you want to post about how many 40+ yarders Suisham made. And, you're wrong about that, too. Suisham was 6 for 6 this year in the 40-49 yard range.

smack..
"waterboarding"... funny.

The network is desperate.. This year's Ad sales, to date, are terrible comparative to past SBs.
Manning v Brees or Manning v Favre is, I would guess, about a 30 percent swing in Ad sales / profits..

Two interesting story lines.. Minn has been to the SB 4 times without a win. New Orleans has never played in a SB.

Anyone else watching the national anthem w/NO/Min and get a very white trash vibe from the whole thing.

Maybe it was just the guy doing the hold the helmet over the head thing... I dunno, we need a better anthem, something fresher that the kids could get into.

Does anybody get that last flag/no flag? The ref said "There is no penalty on the play, the quarter expired prior to the player touching the ball." I don't know what the penalty would have been (maybe the player who touched the bal went out of bounds first?) but what does the quarter expiring have to do with it?

Posted by: msrent | January 24, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

I think he went out of bounds. I wonder if the refs blew the whistle before he touched it.

Maybe. But why? You don't blow the whistle because the clock runs out at the end of a play or when a player goes out of bounds and nobody downed the ball. Then there was the call where they called it a late hit out of bounds (#93) but it was a hit on Favre. Seemed to me the hit was ok, cause Favre could have been blocking for the run.

SMACK1..
If Favre is the QB in the Super Bowl, there are easily two "VERY low hanging fruit" for some major insert AD buys.. One named Wrangler and the other is Sears.
I am sure that if Favre is in.. those "ad buys" kick in tomorrow morning, if not to tonight. Including these two accounts and the overall ratings upswing of Peyton vs Favre.. The Ad rate card would increase considerably... I'll meet you in the middle, SMACK1.. At least a 20 percent increase in AD revenue for the SB network, in the above scenario. (NFL gets a piece of this too).

Yeah. Feely doesn't choke because he can make 40+ yard FGs when trailing, something Swiss-ham was incapable of. Swiss-ham wasn't perfect at 40+:

4-1-MIN 30 (5:53) 4-S.Suisham 48 yard field goal is No Good, Wide Left, Center-91-L.Ladouceur, Holder-9-T.Romo.

Goes to my earlier question, what now?
Without the fumbles, Vikes probably win that.
the officials made 4 boneheaded calls against the saints earlier in the game. The bad news now that the vikes didn't make means favre will be back next year.

What will it take to make Favre ride off into the sunset? Win the SB? A loss here tonight? If they win this one, but lose the SB, will that make come back for one more?

I thought the pass interference was BS. Drew overthrew that pass.

==============================
Agreed.. last OT drive was controlled by the refs.. on the pass interference the LB never touched the receiver and the ball was well overthrown.. And the Meachem non-catch with the ball bouncing off the ground not controled by the receiver... ..
Sux.. makes the game a joke..

Posted by: edvar | January 24, 2010 10:40 PM | Report abuse

hopefully.i don't care for the saints, but i'm going to root for them cause i'm from the deep south.

Posted by: xpac69 | January 24, 2010 10:41 PM | Report abuse

What's the use in rooting for anybody, the refs will decide who wins a close game.

Posted by: msrent | January 24, 2010 10:45 PM | Report abuse

That said, you can't put the ball on the ground a half dozen times and expect to win.

I'm a long time Redskins fan.. But, there is some creepy London Fletcher love going on here.

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | January 24, 2010 10:53 PM | Report abuse

Fletcher should have been in the past seven years, but that's what happens when sports writers vote on people, that's why it took so long for monk to get in.He should have gone in long before that coke head Michael Irvin.Oh and another thing if they are not going to let people in the hall for steroids, then they shouldn't let coke heads and crack heads like Irvin and Lawrence Taylor in.

The SB champ will be decided by the team that gets the least tail.

I was a Favre hater but that old man has won me over. He played his a$$ off the entire season. Tough loss for the Vikings. Go Saints in the superbowl.
