For Now, Portis Will Take It and Run

From Jason La Canfora:

Clinton Portis said he is enjoying his status as the league leader in rushing but figures that, soon enough, teams will adjust. The Redskins continue to face a fair amount of cover-2, with moderate numbers of defenders around the line, and are exploiting it as defenses double Santana Moss.

Portis joked, "I don't mind if we throw the ball some."

The Lions are a prototype Tampa-2 team, and there could be a lot of two deep safeties, so Portis might be able to get off again this week.

"Right now we're doing what defenses are giving us," Portis said. "Once defenses start to stuff the box and take the run away you'll see that pass-happy West Coast offense."

If I don't vote on the Pro Bowl, Is it similar to not voting for your choice of President if you think the won it regardless of your vote? But then the lose and it's people like myself's fault?

I've argued that run games are less important than the passing game. And I've still got tons of stuff to support that.

But the real question that separates the men from the boys in the run game is this "can I run effectively in the red zone?"

The Skins are running effectively in the red zone. That is rarity in the NFL, and a huge asset for this team.

Chad Jackson still sucks, hows that working out for you?? 32 NFL clubs have had a chance to sign him since he got cut, and over a month passed before someone took a flyer on him. It coudln't be that he sucks...no...not at all....

He couldn't get right with the best qb in the league, but you keep fighting the good fight for this guy....

I agree with this. However, because of this, you'd expect the skins to be scoring more points than they are. I haven't checked, but I would guess the skins are somewhere in the middle of the pack in red zone efficiency.

Beantown, I wasn't saying sign him as a starter or anything like that and he very well could suck, but the Patriots thought he was worth a second round pick at some point, and they've got a pretty good history of drafting well, all I said was he was worth a flier if we couldn't get Kelly on the field and your own reference talked about how talented he was and how much more talented he is physically than a lot of WR's in the league today, and if Belicheck says he loves how hard the guy works and prepares seems like a guy worth a shot to me, guess we'll see in Denver, as they say on ESPN's fantasy podcast, I say put it on the board, Jackson will outproduce Kelly for the rest of this year.....Put in on the Board!

Could be, one time i remeber him trying to defend the Green Bay running game and literally all he did was name the other teams in their division. Just took about 45 seconds and named the other three teams then gave a weird smile and starred blankly for another 10 seconds, one of the most pointless and uncomfortable miutes of TV ive ever seen

I think it goes 31-7, we're up 21 nothing at the half, we rest CP and Moss, Thomas gets his first TD in the second half and Shaun gets 75 yards on the ground, Megatron gets a junk time TD and both Horton and Landry have picks.

Sorry Zcez cant find em anywhere.

Posted by: alex35332 | October 22, 2008 1:44 PM | Report abuse

So, what's the big picture?

1) Has there been a transition in the league from pass, pass, pass, back to grinding it out on the ground? It's not just the Skins (see Giants, Tennessee, etc). Is this because of rule changes or did the transition really start last year as the Giants came out of obscurity (okay Lisa picked them at the beginning of the season, but that's just Lisa).

2) Can we count on Pittsburgh to beat down the Giants this weekend? How about Tampa laying wood on the Girls? Even though we play Pittsburgh after the bye, I'd still like to see them pummel the Giants. Dallas may be the first big test for Tampa...yes? Or have the Girls fully imploded?

3) None of the teams ranked above the Skins right now has played a really difficult schedule thus far, even #2 ranked Tampa. How good are we really?...only as good as our injury report, like everyone else? Seems like we should go 10-6, based on where we are today, maybe better. When we play mistake free football, we're hard to beat. Credit Soup, Zorn and Carlos (I'll never call you Double-move again) Rogers, among many others.

4) Dallas plays Philadelphia in Week 17. Will this game really matter? Or will they be playing for a wild card spot or draft picks?

So, what's the big picture? ...

Posted by: _Stumped_1 | October 22, 2008 1:46 PM

The big picture is that, in this copycat league, most teams are emulating the Skins from last season ... and losing a ton of starters to injury.

Zorn is not a copycat kind of coach, so the Skins have not focused on trying to repeat that part of their portfolio from last year.

Posted by: dcsween | October 22, 2008 1:50 PM | Report abuse

Flounder, that must've been thru 2-3 games only....look at the number of possessions. Still, impressive as hell if Tennessee scored on their first 18 possessions of the year?? WOW

Posted by: Notorious_LMG | October 22, 2008 1:54 PM | Report abuse

The point to me is Zorn is running because he is playing to our teams strong suits. We have arguable the best RB in the NFL but a passing game that is still getting worked out due to the new system, use him. Gibbs made a mistake by trying to make the team fit his philosophy over making his philosophy fit the team.

The other day I was off work so I decided to sleep in for a little while. But you know how that goes, you never can sleep no more than an hour past your usual wake up time anyway; so I just lied there in bed flipping through the channels.

I was SHOCKED to see that "Saved By the Bell" still came on. It comes on TBS around 8 AM or something. Watching it made me think of a few things:

1) Leah Remini was hot waaaaay back in '92.

2) The chick "Jesse" (The tall broad) was in "Showgirls", therefor reminding me how much that movie sucked.

3) What in the hell happend to the star of the show "Zach Morris"?

4) Did anyone kono that "Screech" directs or produces porn movies?

Oh and the overall acting SUCKED BIG time in that series. Especially AC Slater when he tried to get the tough guy thing going... hilarious!
Watching it I thought: if he went to a inner city school in the DMV he'd get his jeri curl having @ss beatdown.

Did a fan of the skins just describe a LB as too small to play a position? You should go rewatch the game the other day. Watch our "too small" MLB.

In any game i've ever played their are only two types of players. Ballers and non-Ballers. Best I can tell Blades is a baller.
