Four Redskins Make Pro Bowl

Four Redskins, all on offense (Mike Sellers, Clinton Portis, Chris Cooley and Chris Samuels) were named to the NFC Pro Bowl team announced this afternoon. Not bad for a 7-7 team, unless you consider that thanks in part to aggressive marketing the Redskins had nine players named starters in fan voting, which counts for one-third of the total. London Fletcher still does not make his FIRST Pro Bowl...what a shame.

Fletcher is way better then either one of these guys the PB is bull sh!t.

I will bet that some of these guys don't even go, they will make up some excuse to get out of it.

What a joke - only because the fans vote do these four get in? No way Samuels or Sellers should be in. Cooley is at BEST a back up, along with Portis (what have you done for me lately)

Well, at least they got something accomplished the last four weeks. LOL!

Isn't Jonathan Ogden also going?

Posted by: p1funk | December 16, 2008 5:01 PM | Report abuse

Great! We are among the last 5 in offense this year and we have 4 offensive players in the pro-bowl.

Not a single defensive player?? London Fletcher was robbed.

Posted by: cerrato_bites | December 16, 2008 5:02 PM | Report abuse

That is pretty much bs that Fletcher didn't make it. I think it's weird how Samuels makes it every year, to me he didn't have that great of a year at all.

Neither Walter Jones, Chris Samuels nor Brian Dawkins have any business sniffing a map of Hawaii...

Posted by: p1funk | December 16, 2008 5:04 PM | Report abuse

it amazes me how much people want to complain about pro bowl voting this year because the skins launched a media campaign, last year the cowgirls had 13 people in the pro bowl and one of them was Roy williams and no one was complaining when they had people there like that and ken hamlin neither one of these people would even make a madden roster

Posted by: GreatOne1 | December 16, 2008 5:05 PM | Report abuse

I am not saying the grumblings about the pro bowl are not justified but it amazes me when the redskins do it we need to look into but trust me if the cowboys would have launched the same campaign the media would be talking about how great a genius jerry jones is.

Actually, that might be two too many.

D doesn't deserve it after last few weeks.

What if we traded Clinton Portis, Chris Samuels, Shawn Springs, Antwaan Randle El, and our 2010 1st and 2nd round draft picks for Detroit's two 1st round draft picks and 2nd round draft pick in 2009?

We would then have 3 1st round picks and a 2nd. We could fix our O-Line (1st pick overall and in the 3rd round), D-Line (third pick), and LB (second pick) before the second day!

Fan voting means nothing at the end of the day..

This year's pro bowlers are the same as last year's....

Subtract RBs and insert ST21.

Fan voting had nothing to do with nothing.....

Fletcher definitely should have made the Pro Bowl but as a backup. Patrick Willis is a beast.

Yep. Great fans, who can't even drown out opposing fans in the stadium, many of whom regular moan and groan for others around them to sit down during the biggest plays of the game, who sit on their damn hands time and again, and then make noise when the fricken' offense is on the field.

Right on, Pfunk. We kick butt.

Yeah, we sell that sucker out...then loads of fans don't show up, and half of them are absent for almost the whole third quarter. WoooHoo! We are AWESOME.

It was great we stormed Canton. Why can't we do that during the damn season in our own stadium?

Problem is, this message goes to all the wrong people. The people HERE are diehards, who will cheer, root for them when they stink, travel to see their games, etc...so I'll get panned here. But: we have WAY too many crappy fans that occupy our place.

A. This dude is obviously a Cowgirl fan.
B. London Fletcher got hosed, again.
C. Cooley IS the backup on the NFC team. (See Comment A. for explanation of high intellect.)
D. Sellers has done a really good job as a lead blocker all year and how many other good true FBs are there in the NFC anymore. I'm glad he got in as a guy who does the dirty work, rather than showing-up on SportsCenter like Alstott always did.

i want fletcher to go as much as anyone...but willis as the starter is the absolute right call...he is a monster...fletcher should have went as back up

Posted by: jasonma1 | December 16, 2008 5:39 PM | Report abuse

How ironic, that that one of the crappiest offenses in the league sends four, and one of the best defenses in the league sends none. The defense once again, get's the short end of the stick (on the field and off)

Posted by: ga8085 | December 16, 2008 5:41 PM | Report abuse

Sellers is deserving, he's been blowing people up all season.

But, c'mon, Chris Samuels? I don't know how voters evaluate talent but to think he is one of the best tackles in the conference is pathetic. Maybe a few years back, but now he's definitely on the decline. Pro Bowl tackles shouldn't get dominated in the biggest games of the season...

Posted by: hender_22 | December 16, 2008 5:42 PM | Report abuse

The D has outperformed the O, pretty much week in week out, all year. At the same time, it is hard to name any who are #1 or #2 league-wide at their position. Oh well, I hope the D takes some pride in what they did as a unit, because they've been one of the best.

Posted by: Sweetback | December 16, 2008 5:46 PM | Report abuse

Fletcher and the D saved the worthless offense so many times.

Cooley has 1 TD for a TE. Talk about bogging down in the Red Zone.

Sellers and Portis are tough as nails.

London Fletcher got ROBBED!!!

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | December 16, 2008 5:56 PM | Report abuse

Someone questioned yesterday if Cooley was down b4 he fumbled on the opening drive against the Bengals and there was a response from someone at the game that he was clearly down. NFL Live talked about Zorn today(check out the late edition)and showed(but did not discuss)the Cooley fumble. I paused it and went through it in slow motion and his left knee was CLEARLY down before the ball was knocked loose.Don't know why Cooley didn't fight for a challenge and good teams overcome mistakes anyway BUT this once again goes back to the coaching. The Bengals didn't rush to snap the ball, why didn't our coaching staff challenge the call on the field!!!??? Hey Coach, GO DEEP!!!!!!! Stretch out the defense so they don't crowd the line!!!

Posted by: vegasskinsfan | December 16, 2008 5:57 PM | Report abuse

Whatever, shaunsherman.

I'm getting the impression that the only Redskins game you've ever watched in your life was the monday night game vs. Pittsburgh. And that whole situation was beat to death on this blog; so get over it.

People need to pee and eat. That's why they aren't there when the 3rd quarter starts. It's b/c our stadium's facilities were originally constructed with about 70-75K people in mind, and they built about 15-20K more seats b/c people buy the tix. Makes the lines longer. Of course with 90K tickets floating around a fair few are gonna end up in the hands of some opposing team fans.

I've been to dozens of games over the years and the stadium is loud enough when the guys are playing well and give folks a reason to cheer. When they stink out the joint, people don't cheer. Not sure I'm aware of any fans who go cheering hog wild when their guys are out of a game and getting beat.

With prices being what they are and FedEx being incredibly inconvenient to get to, I'm surprised we don't see more games like the Pittsburgh one...it is a tribute to our fanbase that we don't...

Posted by: p1funk | December 16, 2008 5:58 PM | Report abuse

Fletcher deserved to go more than any other Skin. He was robbed.

Portis was marginal ... jacobs, DeAngelo Williams and westbrook were left off. Really a lot of competition at RB. Any combo of the 3 that made it and these 3 that didn't would make sense.

Sellers makes it because he's one of the few fullbacks in the league. Samuels was excellent 'til the knee went bad. Do you make a Pro Bowl for 8 games?

Posted by: zcezcest1 | December 16, 2008 6:03 PM | Report abuse

I agree Fletch got robbed...however...Im sure he will be ok, seeing as though he has millions of doallrs in the bank..Probably has more $ than most of us on here combined will make in our lifetime and Im sure he can go to Hawaii WHENEVER he wants without worrying about a budget and oh yeah, he gets tons of perks like $ for him just to sign a football, and practicing at his job during the week, but really only working physically at his job for roughly a half hour each week for only 6 months. Sooooo Im sure he will be ok, dont feel too bad for him

I'm sorry...does no one else see the irony that the Skins have 4 Pro Bowlers on offense (where they're ranked near the bottom of the league) and have NO Pro Bowlers on the defensive side (where they're ranked in the top 5)? Just one more slap in the face for Skins fans everywhere...

Samuels - No way a Pro Bowler anymore.
Mike Sellers - Throughout his career he does something really stupid when you need him most. That fumble on Sunday was a disgrace.

Derrick Brooks?????

Brooks: 63 tackles, 51 solo, 0 sacks, 1 FF, 1 INT

Fletcher: 118 tackles, 84 solo, 0.5 sacks, 1 FF, 0 INT

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | December 16, 2008 6:20 PM | Report abuse

Hard for me to feel good about any of the picks. Fletcher was the only guy on the team that deserved it, Portis could have gone either way. Only 17 defensive players selected, which seems rather a small number. 21 offensive players.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | December 16, 2008 6:21 PM | Report abuse

Your impression would be wrong, by a longshot.

You act as if the Pittsburgh game was the first time that's happened. Sure it wasn't YOUR only game?

People need to pee and eat? Tailgating is certainly cheaper than eating in the stadium, along with drinking. No one can pee during commericial breaks? Please, you can watch the games on TV's the whole way to the restroom -which is practically empty at the time - and here the one play you MAY miss. It's ridiculous that the opposing team operates it's offense in a vacuum time and again to start the second half. Then we demand Zorn concede possession for that reason...how laughable. Get to your seats.

Lots of stadiums are inconvenient to get to, yet I don't see the amount of empty seats in other places like I do our own when opposing fan's teams are winning - at Fedex, it's coming to see a huge amount of empty seats, even in perfect weather.

The price complaint has also gotten old. Compare the prices there to others around the league - it's comparable to other stadiums, not the astronomical outrageous sums that people make them out to be...on top of that, for goodness sakes, this is the Washington D.C. area, one of the most affluent in the country. Claiming the price is too high when tickets are selling on stub hub for twice the ticket value is baloney... and selling to opposing fans for those prices.

I don't know...seems we like to bash the front office, the coach...but we hate to admit our players aren't very good, and we'll never admit that there is one other problem with this organization..it's huge legion of fair weather fans.

Posted by: shaunsherman12 | December 16, 2008 6:30 PM | Report abuse

To shaunsherman12.
I agree with your post completely. I think the main reason for the multiple empty seats and high number of opposing fans is that Dan "Dr.Greed" Snyder decided to build a stadium with 90,000+ seats. If/when we build a new stadium it should be no more than 75-80,000 seats. Hopfully, our new stadium is moved back to DC. Im not a fan of being the Landover Redskins.

And Zorn should come back next year no matter how we finish. A first year head with a completely new offense deserves atleast another year.

Posted by: Chrisphilippsen | December 16, 2008 6:49 PM | Report abuse

I find it interesting that all four pro-bowl players are from the offense. I don't want to say that they aren't deserving, but it was the defense that has been the best part of this team. London Fletcher should be named to the Pro-Bowl....no doubt.

Samuels has xxxx photos of something because he's been a joke selection every year he get to go...

London Fletcher is THE ONLY Redskin who actually deserves a Pro Bowl appearance!!!! Are you kidding me??? He is the only player on the field that doesn't whine (CP), that doesn't wipe off his shoes??? (SM), or like most of the skins this season...just don't have emotion (maybe a little Cooley shows emotion)...Mike Sellars deserves it too....sorry Mike. By the way Jason Campbell is not a "career" QB w/the skins...he just don't have it. No answers for you..but just ALOT of bad feelings for the team this year. Jim Zorn, love your nice guy attitude, but with this squad it isn't happening, just look at "our" superstar's face everytime you make a coach's choice of who to put in...IT'S EMBARRASSING CLINTON...STOP IT!!!

Hey Chrisphillipsen. Jack Kent Cooke was building FedEx field. You can't blame Snyder for that disaster. Cooke wanted a more fans who had been on the waiting list to get seats and he wanted the corporate boxes that RFK didn't have. My major problem with Snyder is that while he is a great fan he doen't know crap about football and has Vinny Cerato running the show who has made terrible draft choices.

I'm utterly confused! How the HELL does Chris Samuels keep getting picked to the Pro-Bowl and Randy Thomas doesn't. Chris has lost some technique and is usually getting beat by a good speed rusher either by poor leverage or committing a costly penalty (hold...false start). Randy is by far the most consistent offensive lineman the Redskins have. I'm also surprised that London Fletcher didn't get in. Even though Carlos Rogers put in a somewhat decent season, his undoing is his inability to catch the damn ball and his overwhelming to play the quarterback instead of the wideout he's supposed to be covering. Hence his nickname "Double-Move". Portis deserves to be in Hawaii due to his work. You don't get to be NFL's 3rd leading rusher by riding the bench. He earned the nod. Mike Sellers has always been overlooked and it's long overdue. Congrats Big Mike!!! I can't think of any other TE in the NFC other than Jason Witten and maybe Kevin Boss that are deserving of a Pro-Bowl nod. I think Chris deserves to go because he's been a clutch player. It's just a damn shame that he's had to put in a bit more time passblocking due to the porous O-line. Mike Wilbon was dead on when he said the Redskins won't do much until they invest more drafts into picking up fresher linemen on both sides of the ball. As a life long Skins fan living in TX, I'm so embarrassed when we can beat a dominant team and falter to a lowly team like the Rams and the Bengals. We even struggled against the Lions...now that's mortifying.

Posted by: charronegro1971 | December 17, 2008 2:02 AM | Report abuse

unfortunately in the nfl, the dream has to come to an end for players, they have there time, and then it ends, due to coaching changes and age, and injury primarily....this is what this team is going through, alot of guys are just entering there twilight, yes there is talent but they were dominated on a physical level by pittsburgh, new york, and baltimore...they are the big boys, effort was there...who wants to be told they are ordinary? it's an insult, especially when you play your guts out, this team has given everything, they know it's not enough, so it's a bad scene for them.....everything will work out for the best....

Posted by: johnny3 | December 17, 2008 2:22 AM | Report abuse

The fact no defensive players made the pro bowl(although you could argue a case for Fletcher and possibly Rogers) shows how well they are coached by Blache and co and how they play as a whole unit - a reason why Arrington never fit in with this scheme

The fact 4 talented offensive players made the pro bowl despite ranking in the lower half shows how much talent we possess despite Zorns pathetic play calling, maybe Samuels was debateable, but Portis should have been last year and maybe other years too.Sellers probably is deserving at fb - who else is there in the NFC? and every defense has to account for Cooley

im just glad to see 4 Redskins in the Pro Bowl :)

Posted by: GaryClark84 | December 17, 2008 4:26 AM | Report abuse

The Pro Bowl is a farce. Only Portis should have made it out of the four. Cooley and Samuels has sub-par years for sure. And Fletch should definitely have made it.

Posted by: hz9604 | December 17, 2008 4:40 AM | Report abuse

No way Samuels should be there. Sellers should have went way before now, but he is one of the premier FB's in the league. Portis had a pretty good season. However, Cooley isn't having a good season, but still makes it? NFL, you are losing my respect more and more each year!

Posted by: hoganincharge | December 17, 2008 6:39 AM | Report abuse

Randy Thomas is definitely more deserving then Samuels in regards to any of the Skins O-linemen. But I hardly think he is in the same league as Steve Hutchinson, Vikings (starter); Chris Snee, Giants (starter); or Leonard Davis, Cowboys. These guys drive defenders off the line. Randy is good at pulling, but he is hardly dominant.

Cooley deserves to go because he caught over 75 passes as a TE. This without an accurate Quarterback. He finds ways to get open, is an above average blocker, and can play WR as well when called upon.

BTW...while I do think London Fletcher was deserving, I don't think LaRon Landry or Chris Horton were given their props. They're both better than the Pro bowl selections. For having no pass rush, they were able to shut down receivers for long periods of time, they provided excellent run support, etc. Noone can cover a reciever on every pass play for 5-6 seconds which is how long most QBs have to sit in the pocket against our pass rush.

I also concur with Portis. Other than that, I don't think any other Skins deserved to go. Maybe when the Skins get a decent QB who can read defenses, learn how to move around in the pocket, and not make his O-line look twice as bad as it really is, Santana Moss might have a shot.

Posted by: mikpol | December 17, 2008 6:47 AM | Report abuse

Samuels going to the PB is a joke. Even when he is healthy he is not the same from a few years ago. Portis ok as a backup, Sellers is deserving, Cooley probably not. Fletcher got snubbed.

The offense of the Redskins was a joke this year. The Pro-Bowl system is a joke.

The Redskins defense was clearly the better unit. Samuels is NOT a Pro-Bowl tackle.

The NFL has become all about marketing and money. Snyder wants to sell those Portis and Sellars Pro-Bowl Jersey's when all we remember is that both those players fumbled and grumbled all season long.

OK Vinny, here's your chance: fire all the Redskins who didn't make the Pro Bowl, and hire all the players who did make the Pro Bowl. Salary cap? Pffft. The players you'll sign will be happy to play in Warshington for nothin'.

Well, OK. Pay them all 6 million dollars a year, and exchange all the Skins' draft picks for the next 20 years.

Why not, Vinny? You've tried everything else except scouting young talent at all positions at the college level, assessed the team's real needs, have a concept of the team's image and makeup going into each season and ultimately work with the owner and the head coach to put together a team that blends youth and experience and is headed by a coaching staff that takes less-than-talented players that coaches them up into starters.

What the hell Vinny? Just write checks and truck 'em in. Then bloviate on air about how you take all this BS into consideration when selecting a player in the draft. Just make stuff up.
