Freddy Signs With Benfica (Sorry, I Had Nowhere Else To Put This)
Will put a big blog on Samuels up in a second but just got word from Portgual a minute ago that my boy Freddy Adu signed his five-year deal with Benfica, one of soccer's most stories clubs. Freddy will fly back to DC Wednesday, pack some stuff and fly to Portugal for the start of the season on Sunday.
He gets a five year deal worth about $1.2 million (US). Freddy was dying to go abroad, so he waived his 50 percent due to him from the $2 million transfer fee to get the deal done. Freddy and MLS will split 10 percent of any sell on down the road (future transfer fee if/when Benfica sells him).
Freddy is super pumped to be going there. Great team. Cosmpolitan city. Great beaches. And they came after him hard, essentially bidding against themselves to up their contract terms to Freddy over the weekend to get a deal done. Great thing for US Soccer and I wish him all the best in Europe. Now I've just got to find a way to get the Superliga games on the satellite dish, since it's pretty much the only major league I don't have access to right now.
