A Redskins' trade for Sproles? Don't count it out yet.

When the San Diego Chargers tendered Darren Sproles on Thursday, many fans probably scratched the 26-year-old running back off their free agency list. After all, it'd be foolish for any team to part with first- and third-round picks for a guy who's never had more than 100 carries in a season.

A week earlier the Chargers had said they wouldn't tender Sproles, making him an unrestricted free agent, but it seems that when the Chargers realized there was sufficient interest, they opted to tender him because they knew they could get something in return.

It seems the Charters are very much willing to trade Sproles
and we're hearing that you shouldn't count the Redskins out.

It's not clear what exactly any team would have to give up to acquire Sproles, but the San Diego Union-Tribune says it'd be less than a first- and third-round tender.

Sproles is a running back who could help the Redskins in several areas. For starters, it'd give them a change-of-pace back to complement Clinton Portis. But he'd also be a key special teams addition. The Redskins on Thursday got rid of Rock Cartwright, their
primary kick returner until late last season, and Antwaan Randle El, their primary punt returner. Sproles was fourth in the NFL in kick-return yards last season and also returned one punt 77 yards for a touchdown.

while I am some-what hesitant on the clifton thing, I am 1-brazilian percent against ANY trades that involve draft picks...

Hope it's not more than a 3rd, or someone like Carlos Rogers.

Posted by: jesuisunpizza | March 5, 2010 10:10 AM | Report abuse

So if we get Clifton signed and if Tony Pashos on his way here possibly to sign...and we somehow get Sproles...maybe they do draft a QB... wouldn't need Spiller. Nah, I still say OT at 4 unless Okung is gone, then who knows?

One more thing if this is coming from the same jack@ss that told you guys we would be signing Peppers last night, I would get some new sources.

Clifton and Pashos visiting the Skins. The other visitor to the skins is a former broncos center. Looks like the FO is noticing the need to fix the OL.

Will it continue in April? I hope so.

This post is beyond lame...no chance we make a trade with the "Charters" for a 3rd down back when RB is right now the least of our worries.

Goes back to the whole "not adjusting your depth chart in March" thing...

If they want our 1st or 2nd round pick, tell them to kiss off. We don't have a 3rd, but our 4th and Rogers would be good.

Well, let's let the FO make a run at him and see what happens.

They can play around with the structure of the contract to benefit the team in the short-run (which is what we NEED right now) and hedge our liability in the long-run.

The 7mill/season figure is simply a starting point for haggling, and it basically translates into "21 million over 3 years". We obviously don't need to meet that asking price, all we need to do is beat the offer of the Packers and structure the $$ in a way where we pay most of it this season (when we most need Clifton).

Posted by: p1funk | March 5, 2010 10:13 AM | Report abuse

we should trade rogers for sproles straight up

makes sense for both teams, sproles doesn't want to be there without the big money and after trading away cromartie earlier today, they could use another corner

J Reid doesn't have any insider information. This is just baseless speculation. Shanny and Allen plugged the leaks. Why would we give anything for that little dude?

Awesome.

I couldn't be happier with the direction the FO is going so far.

They are ignoring the Julius Peppers of the market and targeting the best free agent Olinemen for talks/interviews.

I wouldn't want to give anything more than a 4th this year and maybe a 5th next year... or a swap for Carlos would be fine.

Jets with Cro and Revis - sick.

Is JC safer with the continuity of Rabach around for 3 years?

One good thing about being the Redskins...no one wants our players. If was the Chargers, I'd be pissed about losing Sproles and Cro... Dansby, etc.

Luckily we dont have anybody that anyone wants.

Anthony Aldrige was not cut yesterday. I think he will get another chance to prove he's the guy for that job.

Posted by: Original_etrod | March 5, 2010 10:16 AM | Report abuse

I'd give them our third round pick this year, in a slight of hand type trade...let them figure out that we don't have one....

Next post will come with quotes from Don Banks guaranteeing it will happen....

The guy isnt worth the 5M that the Packers are offering him. They definitely need depth, I just do see how Clifton is an upgrade over Jones or Bridges who you would think are younger cheaper options.

RB isn't the least of worries anymore. The #2 and #3 RBs got cut yesterday, so the team needs to do something, either through the draft, free agency, or trade. Incidentally, I think it'd be foolish to give away any draft picks at all, for anyone.

sadly i dont want to get rid of rodgers yet. at least he has started and has played well at times.

maybe Shanny can get him to play better.

But tryon, Westie and Barnes as possible starters scares the bejesus outta me.

Get it done, so long as it doesn't involve a high draft selection. Sproles would immediately satisfy a need, and would do it without the expense of a valuable draft selection.

Here's where Carlos Rogers can come in handy. Chargers trade away a corner, Chargers recoup a corner. Rogers and as much as a 5th for Sproles? I'd do that in a second.

Common Sense Check #3:

The depth chart on the opening day of FA doesn't matter AT ALL. I'm fairly certain we're not playing any games for another 6 months or so...

Posted by: brownwood26

EXACTLY! People are acting like they're playing this coming Sunday or something. What's the big hurry to sign a 34 year old to 7 mil/yr. is sort of beyond me.

I'd be happy with "not a laughing stock" as a first step.

Posted by: chrislarry

Which means you've accepted the idea of re-building. So that being the case, why vouch for the signing of a 30-something-plus guy asking for the money that he is. I don't care how they proportion his salary, the idea of signing someone his age and you're supposed to be in rebuild mode is counterintuitive.

Zeebs/p1, when I mentioned 2000, I meant that signing Clifton to a contract would be like that year in free agency. I don't mean they they're going to snatch up every available free agent.

I just think so of you need to come back from the Allen/Shanahan honeymoon. Yes their resumes are impressive, but that doesn't mean that I, or you have to agree on everything these guys do. I think that some of you are so hungover from Cerrato, that you'll "yes sir" everything these guys do just cause. To me that doesn't make sense. You're forfeiting to do your own thinking because these guys have a track record -- sort of like the idiots who commit to the party system in politics...

And I'll quit on the 2010 season if they traded picks away for Sproles.

Posted by: RedDMV | March 5, 2010 10:27 AM | Report abuse

This is BS...just another story leaked by an agent to use the REDSKINS name this time of year to drum up interest or force a contract.

Redskins don't want Sproles....if they wanted him...the deal would already be done.

Red,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the new FO's "track record", what makes this offseason so exciting? Almost seems as though you want to "no sir" everything they do??

Are you a closet Eagles fan??

Please Front office, don't over-react just for the sake of doing something, anything to show you are trying to win this year and re-build at the same time. i say that you can't have it both ways. You either think you can win this year and plan, sign, trade accordingly or you go young as you can at almost every position and live with the growth. answer to O -line's problems aren't that hard to fix if you think about it. First- RESIGN OT Jones as your starting right tackle. Draft Okung to start at LT from day one. Heyer becomes the backup on both ends. You have Rabach and dock signed so concentrate on the very best RG that you can get thru hook or crook. Sign a real backup guard who can play(no, Will montgomery is not a pro player)both positions. hope that rinehardt has progressed some more and i think he has and being under his rookie deal, ain't going anywhere anyway. Draft the very best RB you can with the second pick and draft lineman only(off & def.) with every other pick we have left. We needed to get younger and less "mouthier"(c-ya rock) for the press and we did that yesterday. We were paying guys like Smoot, Grif,Collins, rand-el and the sorts starter and high performance moneies but we were not getting what we were paying for. they had become average, part time type of players. but thats the redskins way, even over-pay for has been, part time players and then keep restructering them to stay under the cap. That's the thinking that has to go forever!...get young and then get younger because with youth comes speed and passion. You got to find a way to get Lorenzo, C, Wilson , Blades on the field more because to me, these guys showed they are ready to be bigger contributors. I'm tired of the type of players that get starters money but the only good thing they are good running at are to the owner and the press. If we can get Portis, Moss, haynesworth and any other "me-first" players out of here, the sooner the better. I'd rather be young, hungry and ambitious then old and been paid and entitled.
We have ten years worth of results that shows that doesn't work.

Say NO to trading picks for sproles... Absolutely not!! I'd rather they do anything as that.

Posted by: Veretax | March 5, 2010 12:30 PM | Report abuse

I think in Clifton they are bringing in damaged goods. They will still need to shore up the team depth now they have released so many players. There are not enough draft picks to make this team a factor if they do not address the O-line without trading down in the first round. Sproles is not the answer to our issues in Washington. If they do trade for him they are saying that the philosiphy is still the same as it has been in previous years. Do not draft Bradford or Clausen because they are not ready to lead this team. I would be willing to wait until next years draft to select a QB. The group is much better. I still believe they need to consider the OL, LB, FS, and RBs this year

Posted by: pri1ce | March 5, 2010 12:51 PM | Report abuse

There has been conversation here today about whether the Redskins need Sproles or not. I would love to see a running back drafted at #4 and then pick up a QB in the second round. Maybe Lefevour(sp), but here is an article about the draft. IT's interesting.
