Allen keeps his word about visits being just that

Redskins Park is operating a bit like an open house these days. Guys come in, take a look around, shake a couple of hands, sample the free chocolate chip cookies and then hit the road. No contract. No signing bonus. No spot on the 2010 depth chart.

At least three players came through Ashburn on Tuesday and as of Tuesday evening, there were apparently zero contracts to show for it.

Linebacker Larry Foote is now en route to Arizona for a visit with the Cardinals Wednesday, running back Willie Parker completed his visit at Redskins Park later in the day and nose tackle Ma'ake Kemoeatu also had a chance to sit down with coach Mike Shanahan and some of the defensive coaches. They all arrived as free agents and they all left as free agents.

We could learn more about Foote and Parker in the next couple of days, but it might be a few weeks before we learn more about Kemoeatu. Though his visit Tuesday apparently went well, it's not known whether the Redskins intend to offer him a contract. Kemoeatu is still recovering from Achilles' surgery that kept him out all of 2009. He's
not even running right now, so it's doubtful he'd be in football shape and pass a physical.

Still, as one of the few nose tackles on the market who could compete for a starting position, Kemoeatu has drawn interest from several teams. He reportedly has visits with Denver and New Orleans already lined up.

General manager Bruce Allen said on the first day of free agency that just because a player visits Redskins Park, that doesn't mean he'll walk out the door with a new contract. Say what you will, he's at least kept to his word in that regard.

I think we get Foote or Parker, if not both. Thoughts?

I know they only want to hold visits right now, and I understand their strategy and reasons; however, I'm getting a little nervous. We have only one signed free agent (who is from an outside organization and is relatively old). I know we aren't going for the big name (and that's good), but I'm getting nervous that all the free agents (regardless of quality)will be gobbled up by the time we make our moves.`

Has anybody been talking/pushing for 'Skins to consider this RB out of Hampton... Lamarcus Coker??

Likes to drink & smoke weed, but has run a 4.28 40-yard dash.

Seriously, dude was kicked off UT squad 2 years ago, but rebounded to be named Team Captain of Hampton...

Seems like the type of guy with a lot to prove & has rebounded from his immaturity... although, I don't consider smoking weed an immature act... we just live in an uneducated country.

IF he's there 5th round.... might be a steal.

From what I've heard, we would be reaching at 5. He is not expected to drafted, so we could sign him after the draft if he is available. James Stark from Buffalo or LaGarrett Blount from Oregon might be a better selection at #5.

I can't even express how much I love this new approach...part of the Redskins problem over the years has been the frantic nature in which they've handled free agency. You wine and dine a guy, trap him in the building and beg him to stay, throwing more and more money at him until he gives in.

Now they give guys a tour of building, shake a few hands, let the guy go on his merry way. Then you let the player come to you. It's really the only fool-proof way to know what players truly want to be Redskins and which ones want a big pay day.

Kudos to Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan for FINALLY changing the culture here.

I think the Redskin gravytrain is finally over.

I agree though, I would feel better if we added some names to the roster. But I do like the patience. two or three years ago, Peppers would already had been signed as the tiop paid guy in NFL history

The skins will never really ever truly get it. When there was a salary cap the skins spent money wildly.... Now there is no salary cap and the skins all of a sudden start counting pennies. Hell, sign guys just to keep other teams from signing them... Seems to work for the Yankees.

Wow!!!! A quiet free agent season! I'm SO bored... and SO HAPPY!!!!

Foote and Parker would be good signings, but not world changers. K - could be great, or might never play. But then again, how can you win without a crazed, graceful Samoan (ask the Steelers)?

Maybe Boz got a call right (adults in control),... MAYBE!!!

I dig the consertive free agent approach and I'm all for not making "the big splash." However as poor as the O-line performed last year, I would like to see more than just the signing of Artis Hicks.

The Redskins right now are accomplishing some things with this new frugal responsible approach. One, like someone said, changing the culture and mindset of the players we already have here. Two, changing the perception of how the team is viewed by players and FOs around the league. They now are a team that takes care of its own that it values(Rabach) and refuses to overpay for players other teams didn't want to keep or those that teams will mortgage the future on.This approach also says we are not desperate, we are methodical. I think we'll be okay now.

Not only is this new measured pace to FA refreshing, but I like the fact that BA/MS are not letting other teams set the value for the players that are coming to Redskins Park.

FA is a marathon, not the sprint that Vinny thought it was.

It's pretty cool to see the Redskins finally being run RIGHT and everyone in the media taking notice. You have to think that the salary cap moves are in anticipation for next year when there should be a ridiculous amount of talented FA's. It's hard not to get impatient and wonder what they are doing - but great at the same time. If the fans know what a team is doing then certainly everyone else in the league does too. This approach has finally begun to bring some respectability back to the Skins!

I think the key with Hicks is that he has done plenty of power and zone blocking. We are going to see a lot of new looks and multiple looks on offense and defense. These guys that get picked up better be multi talented. I think that will be especially true of Dlineman/linebackers. They'll want to send guys on the field that play DE/LB and have the offense guessing what those guys are doing on any given play.

I hear you, scamp. And I'm loving it. There is the right way and the wrong way to build a team. The assumption that many make is that the hottest guy LAST year will be the best for the team this year. But the last I checked, it is a TEAM sport. So we have to build a team, not assemble a bunch of all-stars.

Yes, Curz, it is a marathon. And we all know that VC didn't have a clue on how to build a team.

Let's get younger, faster, smarter, hungrier. Especially hungrier. Not fatter. Lean and mean.

"...it is really nice to see this approach, but i do wonder what the plan in the draft is."

Well, how many draft philosophies are there?

It's Best Player Availiable versus Needs.

The late great Wizards of Redskins Park went the BPA/big money FA route, and if there's a reversal by the Allen Gang, it'll have to be Needs.

And the needs are tackle(s), linebacker, running back, cornerback, wide receiver, and nose guard.

We don't know in what order those players will come to fill those needs, but we'll all be glad when they do.

Plus, there are a ton of undrafted guys mixed in with 'surprise' late Spring cuts that'll get more notice and play than the chocolate chip cookie eaters Reid has mentioned.

We'll get younger and cheaper and faster.

We have a philosphy that makes sense.

And as for me, I'm enjoying my cookies and milk while watching it all happen: because I'm glad that it is.

1. You don't get to keep the money they're not spending.

2. This was a lousy team last year with the 12 players they cut, which have been replaced by one aging FA.

3. The skins only have five draft picks.

4. The 'skins have numerous needs, which so far they haven't taken any steps to fix, save the aging OLman.

5. The skins have a #1 draft pick-level need for a left tackle, a nose tackle, a quarterback, a free safety...and high draft pick needs for at LEAST two OLmen, a linebacker, a backup RB, a corner, an experienced receiver, to name a few.

6. They are switching to a 3-4 and their top OLBs are Carter and Orakpo, neither of which shine at the position. They also need one or two ILBs because Fletcher isn't getting any younger.

7. I'm not panicking, these suits know more than the last bunch and certainly more than the combined genius on this blog. But, I don't see a workable plan to bring first rate football to DC in the forseeable future.

8. So while trust and acceptance by you is understandable, for the life of me I don't understand the apparent state of ecstasy this approach has put you in.

Point-taken.

Like most folks with sense, though, I'm glad that there seems to be more thought about adding FAs.

One observable notion is that the team is eschewing older players or guys who think the redskins are a clueless ATM or bottomless piggy bank.

I guess we'll have to wait things out to see if there is a definable plan to improving the state of redskin football.

Posted by: MistaMoe | March 9, 2010 9:11 PM | Report abuse

. This was a lousy team last year with the 12 players they cut, which have been replaced by one aging FA.

If they show up to the first game in September with only 43 on the roster, I'll start to worry about the strategy.
I don't know that it's a genius move to hold back on this early part of free agency, but I understand the thought behind it and can appreciate that it takes some discipline to keep on track.

Just wanted to give a big FU to the Philadelphia Eagle fans, players, and organization for naming Mike Vick their Ed Block Courage Award winner.

The Ed Block Courage Award is an annual award presented to selected players in the NFL, who are voted by their teammates as role models of inspiration, sportsmanship, and courage.

Named in memory of Ed Block, a much-beloved humanitarian and trainer for the Baltimore Colts, the award is administered by the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation. Sponsorship proceeds promote the prevention of child abuse by raising awareness of the epidemic and assisting agencies who provide for the care and treatment of abused children.

The Redskin recipient was Phillip Daniels. The Eagle’s players voting Vick as their recipient is a joke and is a blatant mockery of the award. Vick is a coward and is the farthest thing from being an inspiration, promoting sportsmanship, and showing courage. Sponsorship proceeds promote child abuse and he was guilty of animal cruelty and abuse. FU Mike Vick and the Eagles organization.

Anybody want to debate that?

Well, consider that his teammates are the voters, I doubt they get to know him well enough to "know his heart", but they probably do know him well enough to see that he had an enormous challenge to overcome, and admired his patience and perseverance. I can't put myself in their shoes (they wouldn't fit, trust me), but I don't think they should be drummed out of the league for choosing him.

Also if he was signed I would be satisfied with he and Hicks as the starting right side, with Heyer/Levi Jones and BMW as the back ups. Another player we should look at is Kendrick Clancy former Steeler/Saints NT, he's probably the last starting caliber NT on the market, not sure about his injury situation or whatever I remember the Saints placing him on IR but not sure what the injury was.Keep up the good work Bruce/Shanny and company.

Stephen Strasburg, the No. 1 overall pick in the amateur draft last year, made his spring training debut Tuesday, pitching two scoreless innings in the Washington Nationals’ 9-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Viera, Fla.

So if he starts 24 times this year, the NATs will go, what, 24-138?

Can the Redskins ever just act like a normal NFL team? It seems that Allen is just trying to show everyone that he is the anti-Cerrato. This team was 4-12 and needs help in FA in addition to the draft -- last time I checked you do not get extra picks for being conservative in FA. The 'plan' (as I recall Vinny had a 'plan' too) is to have a bunch of guys visit and leave.

C'mon -- bring the guys in that you want and sign them. From there, fill in the holes in the draft.

We are not one player away, we are about 10 -- get to work Bruce and build the team. The other 31 teams are not going just going to hang out just because you view FA as a months long process.

The Roeth affair has some similarities to Tiger's scandal. In the case of Tiger, there was the pristine rep that all of a sudden was smashed to smithereens when we came to know about all his mistresses. (When the count exceeded 4 his mother-in-law got the dry heaves and had to be hospitalized.) In the case of Roeth, two rape accusations in two yrs have made for a lot of molar grinding in Steel Town. The Steeler org and the Rooney fam have greatly valued their rep as the white knights of the NFL to the low lifes like Oak (HC is wife and assist beater!) and other bottom feeders. Now that image has evaporated like the morning mist what with Roeth, the face of the franchise and the hero of their SB win over Zona, being portrayed in the media as an out-of-control sex fiend.

Plus, we're talking about a back that is 5'10 205 lbs & can run 4.3... His pro day is at William & Mary on 3/17, Shanny needs to be there... 3 hours down the road... I like guys that have had to face adversity after they screwed up & we need a game changer type back.

Cityboy -

I guess the feeling is that this is not going to get fixed over night - or in one season for that matter, so chasing a bunch of declining players for crazy money and once again fouling up the salary cap (because the belief is that the cap will return down the line...) is probably not in the teams best interests.

Granted, I'm getting a little anxious, but I think more players - and more reasonably priced players will become available and get signed before the season starts.

We always blast Danny Boy for his impatience, perhaps we should take a little of our own advice.

I can't even express how much I love this new approach...

Kudos to Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan for FINALLY changing the culture here.

Posted by: brownwood26

Posted by: TheCork | March 9, 2010 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Finally, someone with some common sense. I'm tired of the group think on this BLOG. I understand the Vinny backlash but this FO is too passive for my liking.

I'm not suggesting they should continue the crazy spending ways of the past, I just want a happy medium. Not signing players because you want to change your image in the media is just plain dumb. At the end of the day you want to sign players because the fit your system and are the right players that would help you win. If it cost you more, then so be it. It has never been about the money to Snyder, he just did not have the right people allocating the resources to the right assets. I can guarantee you that Cap space will not make tackles for you, neither would visits catch passes.

It would be very intersting to see the comments on this BLOG during the season when this team sinks to a new level of incompetence. I would like to see how may of you still "loves the new approach"

I can't even express how much I love this new approach...

Kudos to Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan for FINALLY changing the culture here.

At the end of the day you want to sign players because they fit your system and are the right players that would help you win. If it cost you more, then so be it. It has never been about the money to Snyder, he just did not have the right people allocating the resources to the right assets. I can guarantee you that Cap space will not make tackles for you, neither would visits catch passes.

Which part? Hey, he's not ordering Kentucky Fried Chicken. He doesn't have to choose "a part."

If anything, he's ordering Popeye's: "Mild or spicy?" Or McDonald's: "You wanna supersize it?"

Posted by: Ejayraptor | March 10, 2010 6:12 AM

You just posted two diametrically opposite views and then labeled it "group think." We got guys up here praising Michael Vick and you see "group think."

As to the substance of your post -- "passive FO" -- I disagree. A passive FO wouldn't have brought in anyone. These guys have brought in plenty of people. They're active, not passive.

Then you whack a straw man -- "not signing players because you want to change your image is dumb." Do you think that's a profound statement? Does that challenge what you see as "group think?"

So, there have been five days of free agency. We've added one new player and signed a few of our own free agents. If free agency ended today, then we'd have blown it. But free agency goes on for a good long while.

You're the type of guy who would mix up cake batter, taste it before it goes in the oven and declare "this cake is not cooked enough." Let it come out of the oven before you pronounce judgment.

What I don't understand is - if this is an uncapped year and Snydley doesn't mind spending money - why don't they sign these good FA's with heavy signing bonuses, a high first-year salary then when the capped year comes they can play with regular salaries? (Or maybe I'm the only who's thought of that?)

Because they don't want them on their team?

This is not your usual group of free agents this year. To be an unrestricted free agent you need six years in the league or you need to have been cut by another team.

The old free agents are worn out and the young free agents are useless. Think: ARE or Marcus Mason. That's who we're looking at in free agency.

Allen and Shanahan are trying to build a team, not rent-a-dude. They don't want to build the team around ARE or Marcus Mason. And if they have to rent-a-dude, they're not going to pay the prices that the first group of dudes have been asking.

See your problem is that you still believe like Vinny and Danny that we are 1 year and a couple of players away from winning it all. So if we have a poor year this year it's because this FO is incompetent not because they are saddled with the crap of the past and that takes time to fix. I sound like the f'in President here but it's true. I'm pretty sure you won't hear these guys blaming it on the past administration though. I'm pretty sure they'll just say "Hey, this is going to take some time and we can't do it all in opne year." If you really think we're a Willie Parker, Julius Peppers, and a Pashos away from the big game then you got issues.

Love this mock draft. I think Linval Joseph could be a steal in the 4th round...he has the looks/build of a potential star at NT.

I know most will hate trading away picks, but the only change I would make is trading our 5th & 7th picks for a 4th rounder and getting Montario Hardesty (RB - Tennessee).

Only 4 picks under this scenario, but all 4 would contribute right away.

I can't help but to take meaningless cheap shots at Barack Obama when ever I feel there's an opportunity to do so. Even it's entirely irrelevant to the subject at hand.

I say that I hate all politicians, but that's just not true, you see? I just hate the democratic party -- especially that idiot monkey Barack Obama. That Muslim looking son of a b*tch will never be my president. His middle name is Hussein for Christ sakes!

No, sir. No, way.

Stay American,

All I know is this when it comes to free agency this year:

The two dudes with the deepest pockets have yet to sign anyone of significance.

That should tell you something.

Is the uncapped year a certainty? Dan and Jerry are carrying it like it isn't and probably won't be.

I am enjoying the professional approach to team building. Starting to see a lot of whining in the posts from the instant gratification crowd. All I can say is, I know it's a foreign concept but, Watch and Learn.

Good observation.. this year is def. uncapped, but who knows what the new CBA is going to look like in future years, if they can even reach one.

why in the h would you want willie who is often injuered instead of bringing back ladell who you know can do very well if he can recover from the injury. he also would be a lot cheaper than no show willie.
