Bruce Allen explains Redskins' approach on free agency

If you're wondering why the Redskins weren't in the running for Julius Peppers when free agency began at 12:01 a.m., Washington General Manager Bruce Allen has a simple explanation: Peppers just wasn't in the team's plans.

The Redskins have been relatively quiet today, locking up their own unrestricted free agents and hosting at least a couple from other teams. But they were apparently not in the bidding for some of the big-name free agents as they have been so many other years.

"It's very clever how all these rumors start," Allen said this afternoon on "The John Thompson Show," on ESPN980, the station owned by Daniel Snyder. "So we just smile about them and let them go."

While it's certainly possible the team wasn't in the hunt for Peppers, it is believed that people in the organization were intrigued by the talented defensive end and Peppers was under serious consideration.

It's possible the Redskins decided he ultimately wouldn't fit in with their new defensive scheme, it's possible they heard the dollar figures Chicago planned to throw around and pulled out late, and it's possible it was all subterfuge to begin with.

At any rate, Peppers is reportedly signing a three-year deal with the Bears that's expected to pay him a total of $40 million.

"Julius Peppers is a very good football player. I've been in the NFC South the last five years and he's tortured my team [Tampa Bay] a few times," Allen told the team's web site. "He's a good player, but I think he's going somewhere else."

Allen was not made available to other reporters this afternoon, but on ESPN980 and on the team's official site, he seemed to say that the Redskins had a deliberate, methodical approach and never intended to pursue all of the free agents that media reports had linked them to earlier in the week.

"There are so many rumors before free agency starts and then afterward there's speculation," Allen said on the team's site. "We divided out our staff and went after the players we think will fit what we're looking to accomplish this season."

On the Thompson show, Allen acknowledged the Redskins would host free agents, though he didn't reveal any names.

"We're going to keep looking into free agency to find more and more depth for competition at every position."

He said even though free agents might visit, they might not instantly receive contract offers and, overall, he seemed pleased with how Day 1 of free agency has transpired.

"This organization is going in the right direction and it's everyone, from the medical staff, the scouting staff, the PR staff," he said. "We're all in this together."

"It's possible, pig, I might be bluffing. It's conceivable, you vomitous mass, I'm only lying here because I lack the strength to stand. Then again, perhaps I have the strength after all."

Maybe Bruce Allen means exactly what he says. That Julius Peppers was never in his plans to begin with, and he just didn't comment on the rumors.

Whatever the case, it's a good decision.

Makes sense. The Skins need to make sure that Brad gets more padding on his right shoul. The nightmare scenario is that a DE gets past the LT and nails him like happened twice before. If he sits for a yr then that gives the Skins another yr to find a pass protect LT.

Can't complain with the measured approach. I really think they are intent on rebuilding the whole image and philosophy of this team. No future predictor of sucess certainly, but I do believe the approach is fundamentally different this year.

Hopefully this so called "plan" entails drafting both olineman and dlineman consistently... as it has been proven year in and year out that the teams who consistently draft men in the trenches have the best olines and dlines... seems simple enough but Danny Boy and Vinny "Yes Sir" didn't seem to get it.

I don't know why the Redskins would ever so much as peek at another QB, at least so long as they have JC17 on the roster. Especially after all that young Jason has done for our fair city -- what with the recurring championships, pro bowl appearances and all, it's clearly apparent this city has never had, nor will it ever have again, another QB as talented and illustrious as JC17. Let's sign him to a lifetime contract -- and pay him franchise rates -- for as long as he cares to grace your nation's capital with his presence. What an all out winner!

Funny to hear that Peppers wasn't even in the plans, because not even 24 hours ago we were getting headlines like this:

Peppers-to-Redskins rumors go to full boil
Posted by Mike Florio on March 4, 2010 10:22 PM ET

I mean, it seemed all but in the bag. Then about 2 hours later, the 'Skins were out of the picture.

I find this part the most entertaining:

We've spoken with Lance Zierlein of KGOW and the Houston Chronicle regarding the change, given that Zierlein was convinced Peppers would be heading to D.C. -- and given that Zierlein had it nailed last year regarding the signing of Albert Haynesworth by the Redskins. Zierlein says that, even though everything was pointing to the Redskins and Peppers on Thursday night, "something happened" to put the Bears in the driver's seat. It could be that Peppers simply wants to play for Rod Marinelli, and that he wants to avoid a 3-4 defense

No see, what "happened" was that your LIES lost it's legs.

Ha-ha -- SUCK IT national/local media!

Vic... really? That was the most useless, annoying post I've read today... which until now had gone to Red DMV or maybe Brown.... I mean really? stop wasting our time with that crap.... get over campbell, he isn't good but he is not the Redskins problem. WIth a better team we'd be a playoff team with him... probably never win a super bowl but with a better oline, a rb who isn't afraid of contact and a scheme that makes sense, he can and would have taken us to at least a playoff appearance....

Not the solution but certainly not the main problem.

Of course, he's proven he isn't the Redskins answer either, but that doesn't prohibit some people from arguing for him to play here again.

Zeebs, seeing that no one will sign campbell to an offer sheet. The skins will not make an offer to Sproles.... I'd lean towards Dansby coming here for a visit and then Clifton being the 2nd most likely thing.

I liked what Allen said about how not all FA's who visit will come with a contract waiting for them. In the past, if a FA visited he typically signed... I like the idea of bringing them in, talking with them, seeing if they fit and THEN offering them a contract. I see Dansby will come visit before Clifton signs, especially since I do see Clifton returning to Green Bay...

I don't buy it. They are outstanding athletes who play interior defensive line. They'll figure it out. That's like saying that Haynesworth is or isn't a 3-4 DE or an NT. NT ... he can, but he may not. The difference btwn 3-4 NT and 4-3 DT can't be as big a difference as 4-3 DE and 3-4 OLB. 4-3 DEs rush the passer, cover the run, and cover the back side. 3-4 OLBs have pass protection duties. DTs and NTs fkuc stuff up in the middle.

Right, stupid1. Cartwright did so well he got stripped of kick returning duties.

Cartwright is so good on kick returns that every time he was back there I had freakin' chills running down my back because he was a threat to take it back to the house.

Only thing Rock "excelled" at was being excellently average.

At least try and bring facts to the table. Your opinion doesn't suffice as facts, homie...

Rock got no offers last time cause his demands were high. This time, I imagine he will receive the vet minimum and play for some team like the lions or bucs. A team that needs special team help and rb depth. Last time Cart expected to be paid like a top special team guy and when he didn't get it, he took the best offer he had (probably only offer but still) with the skins. This time, he'll be less picky and take whats there

I am listening to the podcast of Allen's presser from yesterday, good god listen to 15 minutes of him vs any hour of Vinny when he had his show.

So much more down to earth, thats the difference between Bruce and Vinny. He is frank and calm with the press, but at the same time joking with them a bit.

Thats the difference, Vinny always was talking to big names on his show, always played dumb on questions, he never seemed to get that the only reason people listened was for the head of the Redskins opinions on the team and stuff.

You act like this is as vital as a NON special team position. All you're asking him to do is tackle a guy. That doesn't take a whole lot of skill to do. Again, you're overvaluing Rock Cartwright and what he brought to the table for this team.

And when it comes to covering kicks, Lo Alexnader is 10x times better than your BFF Cartwright.

Starting outside linebackers:
Orakpo, McIntosh
2nd team:
Wilson, Alexander

Starting inside linebackers:
Fletcher, Carter
2nd team:
Blades, Henson

Do I have it right?

Additional team needs:
Free Safety (so we can move Landry to strong safety, leaving Kareem Moore as the only FS; Darren Sharper?)

Cornerback (to take Smoot's place/Westbrook gone after DUI?)

Starting DE (to go with Haynesworth and Golston, assumes Daniels and Jarmon are the backups)

Nose Tackle (to back up Haynesworth and Montgomery)

2 Offensive tackles (Levi Jones can be one as starter or backup but still need at least 2 more -- NOT Heyer)

2 Running Backs (to back up Portis and Ganther)

I don't think 'Dre Carter is an ILB in any scheme. He'd get seriously burnt in coverage. Also, he's an edge rusher, which is not what a 3-4 ILB does at all. The other ILB starter could be Rocky M., Dansby (I'm rooting for him as our big-name signing), another free agent, a rookie, or __________? It appears as though the coaching staff intends to make 'Dre an OLB, as he doesn't fit in as a 3-4 DE, and I don't think Rocky is a 3-4 OLB.

I also think Ganther has his work cut out for him if he intends to back up Portis this year.

I'm really starting to wonder if we aren't looking at Mount Cody in the 2nd round as our NT. Thoughts?

Why do we have to make a BIG FREE AGENT spalsh every year? I actually do want Dansby... but the thought that we have a big name signing every year is kind of sad... we simply cannot resist it as a team....

However, Carter has already proven he is not suited for a 3-4. The year before he came to washington he was up in San Fran playing in Nolans 3-4 scheme. He had a very down year for him and the 49ers let him walk because he simply was not a fit for a 3-4... he came to washington (and a 4-3 front) and had a much easier time getting sacks and making plays because he is the protypical 4-3 end...

However, Orakpo is perfect as a 3-4 olb... but other than that we no other LBS that are suited for a 3-4. Fletcher is meant for a 4-3 as he is small and fast... 2 traits that fit fine in a 4-3, but in a 3-4 where he is going to have to go up against Guards more often he will get swallowed up and lost.

Also, at corner we need to replace Dhall. The man gets burnt 2/3 plays. He is a ballhawk yes, but if he isn't getting a pick he is giving up 15 yards. I would much prefer rodgers dropping every pick to hall getting burnt every play... however both need to be replaced.

This D is not meant for a 3-4 in its current form. We do not have man to man bump and run corners, we do not have the starting lbs, let alone the depth at lbs for it, and we do not have a NT who can handle all the pressure and responsibilities... I am extremely worried about this switch.

D Hall is a talented guy. He's not the world's greatest man-to-man coverage guy, but he has alot of talent. I think he's best suited as a #2 corner who doesn't have to cover the #1 receiver on a regular basis. stupid1

I for one am loving the switch to 3-4....currently we don't have the pieces so i suspect we use much 4-3 as well. but we are in a major transition and it will occur over the next 2/3 seasons...we will still do what ever it takes to remain competitive (and it is a league where worst to first occurs frequently) our division however is brutal and in case you haven't noticed we have been competitive in quite awhile, meaning winning record within, not just playing close and losing.... back to the 3-4.. it is so much easier to draft talent for this defense because there are just so many more body types to choose from ie... more college DE's that are 240/50/60 that lack the bulk to be 4-3 De's and tackles that have bulk but not the burst off the edge to 4-3 De's but can play the run and finally every lineman's dream plenty of guys who have good run stuffing ability but not much lateral quickness who can carry weight and occupy space and are encouraged to get bigger... good talent evaluaters will have more to choose from in this D ...I hoping they make better decisions than the past...not a high benchmark...

PAskinsfan17,
your earlier post about the Lions could hold. If they don't take McCoy, Suh, or Okung they could definitely entertain offers from teams that want Bradford. But if Bradford's pro day goes well, I think he's a sure goner to St. Louis. I know Suh is the craze in this draft but that team needs a QB ASAP. And if it goes that way Detroit may want to stick with one of two great DTs.
