Bryant might not be visiting after all

[UPDATED, 5:35 p.m.]

Free agent receiver Antonio Bryant does not currently have a visit scheduled in Washington, according to a league source.

It seems the initial report might have overstated the level of talks between the Redskins and Bryant's camp. A visit could still be scheduled but as of right now, it doesn't appear talks between the two sides have reached that level yet.

[UPDATED, 5:13 p.m.]

Maybe Antonio Bryant isn't coming to D.C. after all.

We told you earlier about a report in the Tampa Tribune that stated free agent receiver Antonio Bryant would be coming to town to visit with the Redskins. Well, naturally, there's a conflicting report this afternoon, from the competing St. Petersburg Times which also cites Bryant's agent as a source but says that Bryant doesn't have a Washington trip on his schedule.

The agent, Lamont Smith, hasn't responded to messages from the Post for comment this afternoon, but he told the St. Pete Times that Bryant will visit a couple of other teams. He wouldn't specify those teams.

Because it's free agency, nothing is simple. Hopefully this will all be sorted out shortly.

What we do know for now: Bryant was with the Bengals today in Cincinnati and finished his visit mid-afternoon.

ESPN.com initially reported that running back Willie Parker would make a trip to Kansas City to chat with the Chiefs. But the network later reported that Kansas City agreed terms today with former Jets running back Thomas Jones, which will probably fill the Chiefs' burning need for a veteran runner in their backfield.

Parker arrived in the D.C. area on Monday and met with coaches through the evening and again on Tuesday at Redskins Park.

Allen said they would talk to lots of FA's and they would not make offers to all of them.

The same people crying now that were not signing anyone, would be the same people crying if Vinny was still here and we were signing everyone.

RT @Adam_Schefter Thomas Jones signs in Kansas City: 2 years, $5 million. Chiefs have their running back. No need for Willie Parker to visit

not a bad thing. He wouldn't be worth the money hes asking for , much like Willie and Larry. I am glad to see the redskins show restraint. We do have a lot of needs, but just because we have needs and money doesn't mean we have to go out and spend it, sometimes its better to develop your own talent and work through the draft... (not saying we have our own talent just saying its a better strategy ha.)

hub- thats a good thing. To be honest, the less we know about what the FO is doing the better. I would rather know nothing and just speculate and then have somethin completely different happen... than know exactly what were planning on doing.

Skins, under Danny Boy, have always been to open about their operations. Look at the best teams in the league, and you'll see coaches and Gm's spekaing without saying anything. I can only hope we start doing that in DC.

OK, I guess so ... in that he's not Vinny. But what is so impressive about interviewing a top unrestricted free agent and letting him leave? I mean, Buffalo does that. And they've produced, um, the Bills.

Is it part of a "plan" are smart or grownup to interview these guys and then NOT make competitive offers?

You are aware that nothing in your clip and paste job supports your claim that somehow TO behaved in way a that caused Parcells to confront him.

Posted by: MistaMoe | March 9, 2010 3:19 PM |

I never posted anything about "TO behaved in way a that caused Parcells to confront him."

This is what I posted:

==============================================================

Owens' antics in San Fran occured under Mariucci, not Seifert, and in Dallas occured under Phillips, not Parcells.

Posted by: MistaMoe | March 9, 2010 2:51 PM |

From Wiki: Terrell Owens was questioned by ESPN about what he learned during his one-season experience with former head coach Bill Parcells. T.O. was reported to have said, "Nothing, really."

In case you didn't know, it helps to have facts straight when you want to argue a position.

Posted by: FartezDudmore | March 9, 2010 3:08 PM |

=============================================================

Nothing in my post about a "confrontation". You manufactured that to divert attention from the steamer you had posted. The truth of the matter is that TO spent a yr in Dallas under Parcell and there were "antics" of all kinds such as him faking an OD to get out doing any work during training camp. Completely contradicts what you had posted. End of story, putz.

Posted by: dcsween | March 9, 2010 5:24 PM |

Yes if you listened to the Interview Allen did, he said they would meet with many FA's. He also said they would not make offers to all of them.

There is no harm in bringing guys in to see what they are looking for, this could help in other negotiations.

Posted by: Flounder21 | March 9, 2010 5:32 PM | Report abuse

Skins fans are sooo screwed up from Vinny. Really sween? I agree with you on a lot of things, but on FA's it is perfectly acceptable to bring in FA's talk to him, guage their interest level/ demands and let them walk... even if they fill a necessary hole and would fit into the teams plans. Why overpay for an aging vet? Why force something?

Talking with FA's isn't only to give them offers and sign them before they can leave Washington. I know Vinny did it that way, if you come you will be signed, but thats not how it should be handled. It leads to overpaying and not always getting the best player. While I think we should hvae signed Pashos and Clifton (seeing as our Oline is just so bad its insulting to the fan base) I also understand that they might not have fit into what Shanny and Brucy wanted (either price, scheme, roll on the team, whatever). Larry wants a boat load of money, WP is aging and slowing down... why not bring in a lot of guys... show we are shopping... but wait for the right price/player?

I know FA is boring now, but its better that way people... no need to sign pepole just to sign people, even if we have the needs its not always the prudent way to improve a team... (Skins fans, above all, should understand that).

Hard to tell if Danny is auditioning football players or Beta-testing his new travel agency.

If this is the plan Allen came up with, I'd hate to see the ones he rejected.

Yes, I get that they "shouldn't overpay" but why bother bringing these bozos in? If they know the market, don't they know they are out of their price range to begin with?

The Redskins won't contend for the Super Bowl when the season starts, but I've gotten used to them winning the offseason wars.
If these are offseason wars, the Redskins are Switzerland.

During FA and before the draft, keeping secrets isn't so bad an idea. So reporters have to use agents, players, rumor mills oteghr sources, tea leaves and tarot cards.

Snyder just helped bankroll MI4...he's not hurting for money considering Valkryie made 75 million and he helped fund that one too. Granted, I'm sure some of that cash went to big Al.

Posted by: rich20ssu | March 9, 2010 5:52 PM | Report abuse

It's funny how people are griping that Snyder is getting outspent this offseason. If there is a cap next season, we'll be in fantastic shape with over 350 FA's available in 2011. Let's hope the foundation is laid this season and next year is the year we make our run. NO was 8-8 in 2008 and you saw what they did.

Why aren't we trading Carlos Rogers and our 2nd for Jared Gaither and the Ravens' 4th?

Seems like both parties win with that.

Posted by: TDawg1 | March 9, 2010 6:00 PM | Report abuse

I don't have a problem on getting outspent on a guy we don't need (Peppers), a guy who was only trying to leverage his current team (Clifton), or a position where lower round talent is fully adequate (Chester Taylor and RBs), but if they are serious about switching to a 3-4, then our current linebacker depth gets worse and they need SOMEONE to launch the system (Foote).

Ryan Lilja seems like a cut made out of spite by Polian trying to prove he was serious by blaming the O-line for the Superbowl loss. Skins are DYING for that kind of horribleness cast off ... so get him in here and start throwing money at him and make sure it hits him in the face!

[Re-sign Hunter Smith too.]

sween, I'm agreeing with you. There are holes and there are holes. We're creating new holes with the move to a 3-4, but if we're serious, then Foote seems like a good fit. Foote obviously has choices, we'll see how that plays out.

Lilja was part of a very successful OL, and we don't have a solution at RG.

But those are the guys that make the most sense to me, based on what I know.

I'm wondering whether the plan doesn't involve waiting for other teams to get closer to their likely spending budgets so that we can start picking off their RFAs with unmatchable contracts. Do they have to be THIS year picks? Restricted free agency keeps going after the draft, right?

Posted by: dcsween | March 9, 2010 6:13 PM | Report abuse

Sounds like agents are still trying to up the prices for their clients by invoking the Redskins. That won't last too much longer. And next year if we need to splurge a little on FA's, we'll get better deals.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is in (alleged) trouble again. For the second time in two years, he’s being investigated for sexual assault, though at this point the facts are still unclear charges are expected to be filed.

Saints re-sign Leigh Torrence
Posted by Mike Florio on March 9, 2010 6:13 PM ET
The New Orleans Saints have re-signed one of their many restricted free agents. The move was announced moments ago.

Sticking around for one year is cornerback Leigh Torrence. He joined the team via waivers in November 2008. Last year, Torrence appeared in five games and was inactive in five others before landing on injured reserve, due to a shoulder injury.

He previously played for the Redskins and the Falcons.

Torrence had not received a tender offer as a restricted free agent.
