In Grossman, Shanahan says Redskins get experience, competition

Coach Mike Shanahan, during a session with media members after a luncheon with former coach Joe Gibbs at Redskins Park, declined to go into detail about Rex Grossman's potential role with the team.

"I'm not going to get specific for obvious reasons, but we want competition," Shanahan said after the lunch for Gibbs' Youth for Tomorrow organization. "I think if you look into Rex's background, you can see what he's done, how much experience he has.

"He's obviously got a year into the system, not a lot of playing time, but I'm looking forward to seeing all these quarterbacks, see what they can do on the field."

The Redskins signed Grossman earlier today.

Gibbs is tight with Shanny.. they go back 20 years..
I am sure Gibbs told Shanny that JC responds better to competition.. And conversely becomes lax when he knows he has the Start without competing.
Also, Gibbs probably passed on to Shanny that JC was not the best at studying or preparing for games. Gibbs called it being a "student of the game".

If Rex Grossman is the competition, the competition isn't worth watching.

Hold up... why are baseball managers tested for drugs? That seems ridiculous to me. Almost as ridiculous as making them wear uniforms.

I'm stunned that so many peeps voted "hated it" on the Rex Grossman hire.

Posted by: dcsween | March 17, 2010 2:29 PM

This is guys putting down their markers. When JC, Colt, are both injured in the eight game and Rex takes the field in the second half and fails to rally the Redskins from a 21-3 deficit, they'll be able to post "I was against Grossman since day 1. I told you so. If you guys had only listened to me. Blah, blah, blah."

You on the F Duke B'wagon? Jealousy. You just wished you'd gone to a school so prominent, so prestigious, as to have a haters bandwagon.

Which one, don't both brothers play on the o-line?

Also, thinking what Shanny's saying is that JC doesn't necessarily inherit the starting role, he'll have to compete.

Maybe the Grossman hire is a smokescreen as others have said.

Grossman might be backing up Jimmy Claussen after Jason Campbell is traded away on draft day for another fourth rounder, which, in this draft, is a good thing.

Bucky Brooks has Suh falling all the way to the Raiders at #8. WTF? There's no way.

He has Bradford #1, the Lions taking Okung, the Bucs getting McCoy, and us taking Trent Williams. Then he has Bulaga to the Chiefs, Davis to the Seahawks and Berry to the Browns.

Granted Grossman was rather, well, gross in Chicago, but I for one don't cosider Lovie Smith an offensive genius.

competition? WOW

what does that say about Campbell??

funny how some fans are:

if this was cerrato and snyder sigining

larry johnson
rex grossman
possibly joey porter

fans would boycott the skins!

is it just me? how does everyone feel about this?

and yes, i know grossman worked in the shanhan family offense. but still, its rex grossman!
please help! i have faith in the coaching staff but i also have doubts now!!!!

please sign some lineman or draft some!!!!

Maybe Grossman will be used as a backup and Teacher of the System to Campbell and the other QB's. Does this mean that we will not draft a QB?

Competition can mean a lot of things? Perhaps Grossman's real competition is with Colt Brennan, not with Campbell? Assuming Campbell can learn yet another system, which is something he should be pretty good at by now, what does Campbell have to fear about Grossman? This looks more like an insurance move to me, not a long-term solution.

Nobody has been said anything about Colt Brennan, including Shanahan. If Colt isn't in the competition, why is he still here? Is it possible we're all missing something?

Although this move sure makes it look like we might draft a QB, who says we have to draft Jimmy Claussen at 4? Even with 2 stud running backs, we still appear to have major gaps on the O-line. Since O-line hasn't been adequately addressed through free agency, it seems just as likely that the Skins will go for a monster LT or a RT at 4 or possibly trade down.

With real pros running the team, the team is no longer easy to predict. Step-by-step, the chess pieces look like they're moving into position. It may take a few years, but for the first time in years, there are reasons for hope.

Just give Colt a chance... It's funny because if he would've come out after his junior year, the "experts" were saying at the time that he would've been a late 1st or 2nd round pick. He stuck around for his senior year, led them to an undefeated season and a birth in the, I believe, Sugar Bowl. Imagine, Hawaii in a BCS bowl! We always complain about the Skins having a bad O-line. That's nothing compared to what Hawaii had to deal with against Georgia's defensive front in that Bowl game. As soon as he snapped the ball, there were 2-3 guys on him within a second! It was like a jail break. When compared to Hawaii that game, Campbell had an eternity to throw with his offensive line last year. Due to that one game, he gets penalized and is a late draft pick who can be cut without management getting grief. If he would've been a 1st or 2nd round pick, management is basically obligated to have him around for at least 3+ years so that they don't get blamed for drafting him, especially since he's a QB no less. Campbell has gotten every opportunity possible to become a starter because one of the big reasons is because he was a first round pick. It's pretty obvious. All I'm saying is just give the guy a chance...

Maybe it is only what Shanahan says it is, competition. But maybe it's a ploy to keep Cleveland from jumping us to draft Bradford. We still need a QB. All the competition in world is not going to help when you don't have the talent. Okung people relax, we can get a good OT in second. OT doesn't need to be the best in the NFL, he just needs to be able to do his job.

I agree cryptic at best, probably means Colt is released as no way the Skins will have 4 QBs on the roster. I am not so sure the Skins will go with a QB in the draft (and hope they don't). They should pick a couple OL high and fill out the secondary too, especially FS.

Shannie isn't looking so bright now, is he? Getting rid of Campbell and drafting anyone would probably be better than this. Competition , what a joke? I can't watch these guys anymore.

May I propose to the board that we never again refer to the HC as "Shanny" or "Shannie"? I can't stand it....

Taking Grossman is a real disappointment. It looks like we are getting more of the same --useless (worn out) players and lots of hype to cover it all up (and get sports writers to act like something good is going on)

too bad
