Larry Foote's one free agent who might be a good get for Redskins

So the early big defensive names that were attached to the Redskins are already off the market, but one of the players still out there would be a pretty good get.

Linebacker Larry Foote is scheduled to visit to Washington on Monday, and if the Redskins really want him, it might be imperative that they lock him up quickly.

If Foote gets out of D.C. without a contract, he's expected to visit the Arizona Cardinals, who should be eager to sign him. For starters, they just lost Dansby to the Dolphins and need a new inside linebacker. But also, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt was hot after Foote last year and might not let him get away this time.

In 2009, Foote became a free agent after seven years in Pittsburgh (the Steelers took him in the fourth round of the 2002 draft) and Arizona made a late pitch. But Foote really wanted to play for Detroit, his hometown, and called his homecoming a "dream come true."

On the field, though, it wasn't quite so idyllic. After playing seven years in the Steelers' 3-4 defense, Foote suddenly found himself in the middle of Jim Schwartz's 4-3. It wasn't always an easy adjustment, which is why it's believed Foote would like to return to a 3-4 team.

Another thing in the Redskins' favor is their position coach. Lou Spanos was an assistant with the Steelers for Foote's entire time in Pittsburgh. He's now the Redskins' linebacker coach, and you've got to think that he's told Shanahan and defensive coordinator Jim Haslett just what kind of inside linebacker Foote can be and how he'd look playing alongside London Fletcher.

All of a sudden is strikes me that they interviewed the OTs just to see what/ where they are.... and will have them on speed dial if Bradford/Clausen/McSuh is drafted vice Okung at 4.

I think Shanallen are preparing in case Bradford/Okung go one and two.

This Chad Clifton thing really puts everything in perspective

This guy came here to use the skins like so many in the past. I always understood this point, but yesterday really hit home.

I'm sure that Bruce was sincere and wanted him to come in and start for a season or two

But this guy wanted to use us to get more from the Packers. We play these clowns this year and I would purposely destroy this mother you know what, even to a point where he gets hurt

That's right... I said it

Enough of this Bull Sh*it

In this draft we MUST come out with two stud Tackles

I don't care what they do to move up into the first round.... trade someone.

In the 4th & 5th round, Shanny will grab two diamond in the rough backs

Then we are ready to fight

It would surprise me if the Skins picked a OT at 4 but they could. They might even pick Camp at 4. If they did I would eagerly anticipate the play where he pulls to block for Port and Port can't keep up with him.

i dont think we should trade up and HAVE to draft two stud tackles...the logical decision would be to take LT with the first rd pick

luckily, we have a very high second round pick which should allow us to grab a very good RT...at the worst, we would still be able to draft the best/second best guard in the draft

IMO, the smart move would be to draft two tackles, cornerstones for our team for the next decade a la samuels and jansen

Last thread RE right vs wrong reasons:

Nice summation P1. For far too long we've been viewed as the place to get paid rather than the place to win. A collection of a few extremely rich players surrounded by non-stars with no hope of developing any team chemistry or unity.

It will take some time to right the ship but once it gets done the sailing will be much smoother.

My prediction for LB, QB, 2 OL to be signed today is probably going to strike out.

I'm unsure whether to be proud or concerned that we have not signed anyone at this point.

Also, is anyone having response timeout issues with wapo.com. It's getting annoying...

"If Foote gets out of D.C. without a contract, he's expected to visit the Arizona Cardinals, who should be eager to sign him."

I guess a lot of peeps are surprised at the Skins off-loading a lot of players and then not doing much of anything in the FA market. But how about the Cards for Crissakes. They have off-loaded/lost Dan, Bold, Warn, and Rolle and so far haven't picked up much of anything except draft picks. And their presumptive QB, Lein, sucks worse than ours. I wonder if the Cards will hold on to Jeremy Bridges, the strip club parking lot stick up artist, who the Skins cut during 2009. He started the playoff game the Cards lost to NO and performed well. But I think he was subbing for Levi Brown. Speaking of Levis, the Skins made brain dead respectable in 2009 when after cutting Bridges they picked up Levi Jones, a real OL steamer if there ever was one.

Don't forget Lindenberburger.

I think if we get an LT at #4 and sign Pashos, we are done (this year) on the Oline. If so, I say Jahvid Best or Toby Gerhart at #37, and then go BA LB/DB the rest of the way... SMART athletic guys who can challenge/push starters and can tackle on teams.

Must read:
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2010/03/randle_el_compares_the_redskin.html

Now, maybe, all of the Zorn haters will wise up. It wasn't Zorn's fault - Cerrato didn't give him an offensive line. No offensive line = no offense = loses...it's a real simple equation.

When Zorn had an OL (first half of 2008), he was 6-2 against some of the best teams in the NFL, In fact they beat the Super Bowl bound Cardinals.

How short people's memories can be.

REPEAT after me - Cerrato was the problem - Cerrato was the problem.

There - now doesn't a little dose of reality help you feel better.

It is too risky to wait until the #37 pick to grab a Franchise tackle. What if one doesn't exist and there are only second tier projects?

Do we really want to go into the season with Heyer?

Who are our back-ups?

No Way!

We have been playing this game far too long. It's time to step up and make a big splash as they say.

Do we really need two stud TE, when we can't block?

I'm not sure why they even tried to entertain the possibility of bringing in old tackles, unless they are back-ups

It's time to build an O-line.

If we don't..... forget about winning next year.

We don't need a QB

Hey nobrainfromtampa the efficient markets hypothesis is based on this "technique" and it garnered Nobels for some economists but it was also the theoretical underpinning for the financial sys that melted down in 2008.

Posted by: ElevatorAl | March 6, 2010 12:34 PM | Report abuse

It seems like our biggest needs this year include OT, RT, NT, CB, FS, LB, G, C, RB and probably QB.

It's gonna be hard to predict draft priority until FA is a little further along. I think we should pick a stud, shut down style corner at #2, but we may pick up a suitable guy in FA. It's a crap shoot at the moment.

The only truth is, no matter what, we should be taking some O line guys - for depth or to start. I don't think we have one O line guy on the roster that will be here and starting in 3-4 years. Maybe Dockery.

Mr. Holland's Interest

The Dallas Cowboys are showing some interest in re-signing offensive lineman Montrae Holland, but the Washington Redskins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are also in the mix, according to an NFL source.

The eighth-year veteran, who is an unrestricted free agent, was traded to the Cowboys from the Denver Broncos back in 2008 for a fifth-round pick in this year's NFL Draft. Since joining the Cowboys, he has started in just two games and appeared in seven as a reserve after being a 16-game starter for the Broncos in 2007, so a fresh start with another team might benefit the -6-foot-2, 326-pound lineman.

Originally a fourth-round pick in the 2003 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints, Holland has appeared in 75 games and started 48, including all 16 during the 2007 season with the Broncos.

_____________

Could be his agent floating teams, but Holland was a starter at one guard spot while Shanahan was the HC so there's the connection. He was traded to the Cowboys because Holland showed up at training camp 9 pounds over target weight (325) and took two weeks to get down to 325. By that time Holland lost his starting spot.

I thought that too, but the coaches are no dumb enough to create more work for themselves with the switch. Even Haslett said he would see what our front is more suitable for our defense. Converting a few players to different positions will also curb the need for outside help.

Everyone understands that we are the Gold Standard when it comes to getting paid. We pay and we pay big time, so it's no wonder Chad had his agent schedule something with us to make other teams move quickly on him. Pretty smart if you ask me. It's just like playing in the stock game or blackjack and poker... it's all about the bluff.

As of now I am surprised and very please how we have handled ourselves thus far. No crazy stuff is going on and we are not the Kings of the Off Season at this point. Way to go Bruce and Mike. Keep it going.

Right now it's all about number 4 and no more. That tackle is the key to our season. Honestly we can wait a year and get a QB for grooming but that tackle need to be here and right now. I think the 'Skins have a plan and are working it to perfection at this point.

1. Take care of our own
2. Get younger and let players step up
3. Find value not glitz
4. Monitor the wire
5. Prepare for the draft and look for gems in unsigned players

We all know that most of the Hog line was a bunch of undrafted guys who became monsters. I believe it can happen again with the right people involved and a scouting team looking for value and potential.

Thoughts?
