Larry Johnson signs with Redskins

The Redskins have signed running back Larry Johnson to join Clinton Portis in the Redskins' backfield, a league source confirmed. Johnson would give the Redskins a strong runner in the backfield to complement Portis, who's expected to begin the season as Redskins' starter.

The Redskins confirmed the signing with a 6 p.m. news release.

"We are excited to bring in a running back that has had so much success in this league," Coach Mike Shanahan said in the release. "Larry is a physical runner who will be a great addition to our backfield."

The source said Johnson agreed to a three-year deal that will pay him up to $12 million. News of Johnson's signing was first reported this afternoon by ESPN.com.

Johnson was released by the Chiefs last year after making offensive remarks and played the final seven games with the Bengals as a reserve. On the season, Johnson had 581 yards on 178 carries and no touchdowns.

His last 1,000-yard season was 2006, when he rushed for a career-high 1,789 yards and had 17 touchdowns.

"There hasn't been a real good running back tandem in the league [for a while]," Johnson told ESPN 980 on Thursday night. "There's always been one guy or three guys. It'd be just like how me and Priest Holmes was way back in the day. It'd be nice to be able to play aside somebody like that."

While Johnson, 30, had complimentary things to say about Shanahan, the Redskins' coach left few doubts about his feelings for Johnson.

"Obviously I've watched him from afar for years," Shanahan said. "I coached Larry in the Pro Bowl. I like Larry. I'm a big fan of his."

The Redskins also considered Willie Parker, who visited with coaches at Redskins Park on Monday. The Redskins also have running backs Anthony Alridge, Quinton Ganther and P.J. Hill on their roster, though Ganther is not expected to be with the team when camp opens.

Johnson has had more than his share of off-the-field troubles. He lost his job in Kansas City after he was suspended twice within a 12-month period, following remarks he made on Twitter about Chiefs' coaches and gay slurs he used to members of the media.

this is a great signing

there is no mention of guaranteed money and this leverages Portis to get better

He is not the future, but he is great for now

Those 29 starts from last season have been replaced by 11 starts in the Redskins' three free agency signings thus far -- three for Artis Hicks and eight for Sean Ryan.

By Rick Maese | March 12, 2010; 2:51 PM ET

Up your nose, with a rubber hose, Rick Maese! Larry Johnson got 7 starts last year. So, we've only signed four guys and now we're up to 18 starts. Do, you dig the upgrades?

I have studied math, so I can explain it to you. 4 guys, 18 starts. That's 4.5 per guy.

We cut 10 guys with 27 starts. That's 2.7 starts per guy. How much better are we doing? 4.5 is 166% of 2.7. Do you get it?

We're two thirds better than we were, and you ain't seen nothin' yet. We're gonna draft a bunch of guys who started 10 or 12 games last year and we'll be 200% or 250% better. That means 12 or 14 wins.

He thinks this will be similar to back when he was in his prime running with Priest Holmes in his prime??? He does have a couple things in common with Portis. They're both past thier prime and have bad attitues and emotional issues. Come on Allen. Id much rather have Betts than either one of these two class-less people.I guess the press will be happy with another mouth the team.

Larry Foote, yes.

Larry Johnson, no.

So I guess we cross Dwyer, Spiller, McCluster, Tate, Best, Hardesty, et al from the wish list.

Oh well.

Not a huge fan of the move, but if they pick up a speed back in the draft then this might turn out ok, they would then have a power back for short yardage, Portis then a speed back which would complement each other, just for a short term fix of course.

This observer senses--from the acquisitions that have been made--that the team is setting itself up to draft a left tackle, linebacker, receiver, defensive tackle, and corner in no particular order.

And if these are the choices, it would satisfy me.

Larry Johnson or Ladell Betts?

Johnson's (age 30)career numbers:

TOTAL 1,421 17.3 6,219 4.4 75.8 55

That's ,1421 attempts, y'all

Betts' (age 30) career numbers:

Totaol 776 3,176 4.1 27 13

That's 776 attempts, y'all.

Two 30 year old guys, one in possible decline, the other coming back from injury.

Who do you chose?

Moe goes with Betts as the lack of mileage and familiarity with the team are pluses.

He's cheaper, too.

(and wither Wilie Parker?)

Larry Foote should be shown the money.

Homo-hating Johnson should be shown the door.

it's $12M MAXIMUM over 3 years IF he reaches all performance incentives.

you can bet that some of the incentives are carries and yardage as well as games played.

if Johnson doesn't perform he isn't going to get paid much under this deal.

Same thing with Kemoeatu and Hicks.

Some of you people keep tabs on the Skins just to complain about their every move. I like this move. All of you that keep comparing Ladell Betts to Larry Johnson are crazy. Ladell Betts has NEVER been the featured runner in his career. Where is the comparison? He couldn't even make a case for himself when the competition was Trung Candidate. Even if Larry is over the hill he is better than Ladell at any point of his career. Come on people! This not a long term solution obviously but for the immediate future it isn't a bad move AT ALL.

I'm not sure LJ is actually washed up like most people seem to think. He has alot of carries, but his YPC has been very consistent through his career, with the exception of one of the two years he gained over 1700 yards and averaged 5.3 YPC, and the year he was hurt and only averaged 3.5 YPC. Even last year when he didn't play that much, he still managed to average 4.4 YPC, whereas his career YPC is 4.3. He's definitely a prima donna head case with lots of carries (kind of like CP), but (I admittedly say this without watching very much of him last year) he may very well have a couple of productive years left (kind of like CP), especially as part of a two-headed combo. If Shanny can manage the egos properly, this might be a good thing for a couple of years while the team refreshes talent in other areas.

Posted by: skinsfan713 | March 12, 2010 6:20 PM | Report abuse

I like the move.

I know he's such a homophobe that he will only hit women. But, can’t a guy get a 5th or 6th chance in a position of need?

It's an uncapped year so if this knuckle dragger drops the "ball" again, he will be cut.

Posted by: Sonny9 | March 12, 2010 6:24 PM | Report abuse

If Larry Johnson is part of the plan, the plan has MAJOR problems.

Jamaal Charles replaced Johnson as the lead RB for KC last year -- they ran behind the same line.

Charles, 190 carries for 1120 yards and 8 TDs
Johnson, 132 carries for 358 yards and 0 TDs

Charles 5.9 yds/carry
Johnson 2.7 yds/carry

On top of it, Johnson is a head case.

This is a VERY stupid move

I think I would have stuck with Betts. And I definitely think they could have gotten LJ for less money than they did. Skins pretty much have to use their top pick in 2011 on a running back now.

+1. With only 5 picks in the draft I'd rather they focused somewhere besides RB. Get a stud RB after you've rebuilt the O-line, settled on a QB, addressed some defense to help in the switch to 3-4, etc.

Its moves like this where the owner should step in and stop it. Shanahan's may have a lot of control, but it can't be free of any checks and balances.

If I'm Snyder, I'd ask this:

1. The guy stunk last year, and when the promoted his backup, he was outstanding.

2. The guy is at an age where most RBs decline in their performance

3. The guy is a headcase

Why are you asking me to sign a guy with 3 strikes against him?

I can't imagine ANY answer that would convince me he's worth it.

LJ is definitely a jerk im not going to waste my time trying to defend him, but who really cares if he is an ideal role model. He is a football player. I only care if he shows up on Sundays. I dont know why people want the athletes of the teams they root for to be angels. Im sure many of us work with people who are verbally abusive, cheaters, jerks and a whole lot worse. How is this any different? You give people like LJ a short leash. If he gets in trouble or is a problem you toss his azz.

Sounds like another bottom dollar deal. I'm not too worried. I think he'll be the short yardage guy. Portis will be the feature and we'll probably either draft a burner or teach alridge not to fumble. I'm ok with this since it means we don't have to take a running back in the draft. I don't like LJ though. I see why they did it, I just don't like it.

Posted by: PAskinsfan17 | March 12, 2010 6:34 PM | Report abuse

From ESPN's Adam Schefter on ESPN....

"The contract is worth $3.5 million and could reach as much as $12 million total with incentives."

Not a big fan of LJ but that's not a bad deal. If he plays well, which is good for the Skins, he gets paid. If he is terrible he doesn't.

Either way...no biggie...not a bad signing. Let's relax and see what plays out...never know it may light a fire under CP.

Now I would like a speed back in the draft...along with the most critical need..OL...OL..OL.

I like this move for the on the field reasons. As far the off the filed issues, I"m not very comfortable. LJ will give the Skins a back, should CP not make the team, or should he falter during the year, that has some vet experience. I still look for the team to address the RB position in the mid to late rounds during the draft. Kyle Shanahan was successful creating matchup problems in the passing game with Steve Slaton. I would think that they would want to get that "3rd down" back on the team.

All nay sayers consider this for a moment:

LJ will force Portis to work out, practice, and fly right. Otherwise, LJ will take his spot.

The skins will draft a young RB in this year's draft.

The skins still have Alridge who is explosive (ran a 4.38).

I like having a powerful runner on the roster. Remember our goal line problems last year with Portis and Betts.

And lets look at J. Charles Vs Larry Johnson a bit closer as charles had 94 carries for 758 Yards in their last 4 games all against NON PLAYOFF ( Buff, Clev, Cinnci and Denver )teams mind you and thats 80 percent of his yearly total.

LJ started primarily gainst teams the wre NFL PLAYOFF teams ( Dal, NYG, Phili,S.D )

Sometimes you have to look alot closer at Numbers and thats why some say stats are for losers because unless you investigate the stats they can be easily manipulated...Like people are on this board, Plus that doesnt even mention the fact that Im sure KC's Off Line got better as evidenced by their run #'s game to game

Really this signing is decent not great but decent and hopefully it puts some fire under CP's butt which is why I believe we really did this

Rock Cartwright averaged 3.6 yards/carry, Johnson 3.2 (including his Bengals games).

Rock catches the ball and can play on teams.

They are 2 weeks apart in age.

Rock had 1 TD and 0 fumbles, Johnson 0 TDs and 2 fumbles.

When the year 2006 was reached for comment, it said "This is a great signing. I'm really happy for Larry. The Redskins got one heck of a player."

Sign an A-hole to motivate an A-hole. Is Shanahan consulting with Dr. Phil?

Safe bet neither Johnson or Portis will be on the roster in 2011.

First fight of training camp...Larry vs Clinton. Too funny to call.

So far I am not seeing any positive changes for the Redskins. Dumped a bunch of 30-year-old veterans to sign 30-year-old second string veterans and damaged goods. Why not just suit up McCardell and maybe Sonny.

Posted by: BigTrees | March 12, 2010 7:20 PM | Report abuse

"Larry Johnson got 7 starts last year.

That means 12 or 14 wins."

This is simultaneously the dumbest and funniest thing I've read in a long time.

to me, looks like Bruce & the coach are preparing for CP26 not to be medically cleared to play.

BTW-anyone REALLY think Betts will even be a shell of his former self after tearing EVERY ligament in his knee at age 30?

didn't think so.

Maybe that's because you don't have a clue about what's going on in the NFL this year? There are no 26-year-old Pro Bowlers on the market this year.

All the rules changed and to be an unrestricted free agent you have to have been in the league for six years, or you have to have been cut by some team. So, basically, the Redskins can only choose players with about the same profiles as the players they cut. You got your choice between the Marcus Masons and the Randy Thomases. They just have different names.

Being a Skins fan living in KC I can tell you about Larry...off the field the guy makes Portis look like a saint....on the field....he can't and doesn't want to pass block...the Chiefs oline was worse than the Skins....He is tough to bring down once he gets going only with the Chiefs last year half the time he'd get the ball the defenders were already there in the backfield...he is awesome on screens. I don't like the guy but for a back up I think you could do a lot worse.

Posted by: orioledw | March 12, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

I don't know how anyone can say this is a Cerrato redux move. Cerrato's awful moves were characterized by giving lots of guaranteed money - like $12 millon (or whatever it was) to Archuleta. Hicks, Ryan, Kemoeatu (whatever it is), and Johnson are all guaranteed just a few mil each (less for Ryan).

Each move, by itself, isn't going to do a whole lot, but slowly we're filling holes with decent players without laying out a lot of $$. Then, we hope to hit on some impact guys in the draft, maybe pick up a few value signings at the end of FA, and see what happens.

Can't defend Johnson's character, but honestly, we're paying him to carry the ball. Hopefully he'll shut up and run. If he turns into a problem, cut him and we aren't out a lot of $$.

Posted by: saltydog75 | March 12, 2010 7:53 PM | Report abuse

This is completely retarded. What do we need with a whiny, over-the-hill, wife-beating, gay-basher? Nice move. Shanahan is starting up with Thug-O-Rama.

Posted by: messykat | March 12, 2010 8:04 PM | Report abuse

why is portis "expected to be the starter" as reid states? in my opinion johnson is going to be the starter. he has much more left in the tank than portis. he's carried the ball 700 less times in his career.

Posted by: slim4 | March 12, 2010 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Mike Shanahan was fired after the season and new Denver coach, Josh McDaniels cut Alridge. Shanahan advised Vinny Cerrato to pick Alridge up, saying he was the fastest player player with the football he has ever seen.

Posted by: richs91 | March 12, 2010 8:20 PM | Report abuse

I think this is one of those signings that a team makes when they're more concerned with depth than starting level talent. Larry is the sort of back who takes a step toward the hole, makes one cut in either direction, and charges forward -- exactly Shanahan's sort of running back. Whether Johnson has anything left is another matter entirely. We just haven't seen enough of him to judge. But assuming he's healthy during camp, we should know by the end of preseason.

Heck of a plan Mikey and Brucey.

Two over the hill running mouth backs.

Can't wait for the quarterback signings.

Tim Couch or Derek Anderson.

ROFLMAO.

The Cleveland Browns will win more games next year than the Deadskins.

You betcha

I think Snyder asked Bruce Allen to resurrect the Over the Hill Gang. We're getting people past their prime and old. So, we let 10 guys go that were past their prime to get 3 guys (so far) that are past their primes.

Sad, but seems that Snyder is still in charge here.

Like the good old days with my good buddy Priest Holmes??? Please, Johnson sulked and pouted about his shared role. Don't see this as a dynamic duo so much as a replacement-in-waiting. Unless Portis shows some dramatic improvement in conditioning and durability I look for him to be cut loose. Given his slow (or continuing?) recovery from the concussion I don't expect much patience with his progress. He was expendable under Shanahan before and is even more so now.

Why Ledell Betts is not our starter is beyond me. EVERY time he has been given a shot, he has excelled and he is a supper nice guy (I sat next to him at one of the Redskin Luncheons). Better than Portis in every statistical category. For some reason this team has been so in love with the prima donna, and now washed up Portis, that they failed to see Betts value. I hope he finally gets to start somewhere else (other than NFC East) and becomes a superstar.
So now we have a washed up homophobe who can’t get along with coaches, backing up a prima donna. I’ll give them till week three to get into a fist fight. If Johnson still had it, do you think KC and CL would have gotten rid of him?
Our running backs should be…
1. Betts
2. Serviceable vet free agent (yonger than Johnson)
3. Cartwright
4. Quinton Ganther
Oh well. Our only hope is that Portis will excel under Shanahan’s system as he did in DEN, stay healthy and start showing up for work. A lot of ifs.

"Johnson has had more than his share of off-the-field troubles. He lost his job in Kansas City after he was suspended twice within a 12-month period, following remarks he made on Twitter about Chiefs' coaches and gay slurs he used to members of the media."

Shanahan's the coach who gave Maurice Clarett a shot - he'll take 'em where he finds 'em as long as they're willing to run straight ahead not side to side, and more power to him. At some point you've got to ask yourself, "Do I want a team of the most politically correct football players, or the best football players?"

We send the politically correct to Washington DC to represent us, and I'd be hard pressed to argue that they've conducted themselves with any more decorum than players in the NFL.

The difference between politicians and football players seems to be that football players actually have to be good at something other than winning votes in order to succeed in their profession.

LOL!

Very subtle, your Humor.

Betts probably will never play in the NFL again. He's 30, blew out his knee (badly) at the end of the season, so he will have a lot less time to recover this year, and it typically takes two years to be 100% again. Not much of a market for 32 year old RB's who were never good enough to start when they were younger, and are coming off a major knee injury.

Cartwright isn't even a running back (no, really)

Ganther ran OK, but could not pick up a blitz to save his (or Jason's) life.

And who's taking bets on when in October Portis will be out again with another major concussion and staring at retirement (with double vision). He just got medically cleared this month. That was a nasty concussion.

Great backfield...

New blood needed.

The Eagles lack...what LJ brings to the table...a back that gets into the end zone and the back that gets the 4th and 1..the backfield is once again one of the strongest units on the roster..
