London Fletcher approves of Redskins' new approach to free agency

The Redskins often signed high-profile free agents in Daniel Snyder's first 11 seasons as owner. But Washington only had three playoff appearances during that span. With Coach Mike Shanahan and General Manager Bruce Allen directing the football operation now, Washington has not been among the most aggressive teams in free agency this offseason. And that's not a bad thing, according to middle linebacker London Fletcher.

"Obviously, the Redskins, they always know how to create excitement or anticipation during free agency in years past. But it's a new regime here now," Fletcher said Thursday during a break from workouts at Redskins Park. "Bruce Allen and Coach Shanahan, their approach to free agency was a lot different this year.

"And it's been proven that you can't buy a football team - a winning football team - that just doesn't work. You build your team through the draft, you find quality guys and you retain your key free agents that you can. And if you do go out and get some free agents, choose wisely in the free agents that you do pick. I can't remember a time where a team went out and bought a Super Bowl."

Someone tell London that the 49ers bought Super Bowl XXIX when they signed Deion Sanders to that one year contract. Then the Cowboys bought Super Bowl XXX when they signed Deion to that multi-year contract. And that's when Danny tried to buy his own Super Bowl by signing an obviously over the hill Deion to that highly lucrative one year contract.

Excuse the re-post, but I'd sign Sharper in FA. An immediate leader / upgrade of the secondary (like London was for the LBs), Landry to SS, he helps bring along the young guys (and maybe help Shanny decide who can be jettisoned) and no draft pick needed this year.

If Bradford and Okung go 1+2 and we can't trade down, should the 'Skins take one of the DTs? Say Suh is available, we take him, stick with the 4-3 for a year (best use of Daniels and Fletcher, less pressure to use picks on the LB corps, give the new NT time to get healthy)and, going forward in 2011/12, switch to a 3-4;

Haynesworth / Kemoeatu / Suh

Best LB / Fletcher / Rocky Mac / Orakpo

Hall / Sharper / Landry / Best CB

Depth; Jarmon, Alexander, Barnes, Blades, Carter (if not traded), Golston, Horton, Doughty, Jackson, Montgomery, Moore, Rogers (if not traded), Tryon, Wilson, whoever else acquired.

That D would be competitive, right?

A summary of the last few years FA/offseason moves:

2009 - Big Al, DHall - Outcome: Not worth it
2008 - Jason Taylor - Outcome: Not worth it
2007 - London Fletcher - Outcome: Worth every penny
2006 - El, Lloyd, Archuleta, Duckett - Outcome: ulcers, eye gouging, and high blood pressure
2005 - Coles for Moss - Outcome: push
2004 - Portis for Bailey, Brunell, Springs - Outcome: Portis/Brunell not worth what was given up, Springs was a good pickup

So 12 big name guys over 5 years, and only Fletcher, Springs, and Moss have covered their contracts. Pretty pathetic.

If you're going to talk about "covering their contracts" shouldn't you wait until they are at least half way through their contract before you make a judgement? Seems 1 year isn't really an accurate measure.

Even Stevie Wonder admits that he sees the difference in the redskins' approach to Free Agency.

I still think there will some surprises.

What might they be?

a. the acquisition of another big receiver

b. a starter from last year's offense is traded on draft day

c. the team collects an additional linebacker and corner

d. A Carter is moved

e. offensive players are drafted at 4 and 37

I wonder if London would agree about any of this happening.

Although they weren't like years past in FA, they still have made the most moves out of any team. But very happy they didn't make big name moves like Peppers. If they draft Okung then we are definately heading in the right direction.

Well, I imagine mattsoundworld was just jiggling figures to support his point, not prove anything.

Fact is, free agent prices are set in the marketplace. Albert Haynesworth 'cost' as much as he did because some idiot was willing to pay it (probably because he was afraid some other idiot would beat him to it.) The minute the contract was signed, Albert was condemned to years of second-guessing by fans. It goes with the paycheck.

We hope so, right? But first tackle drafted isn't always the best. This is one of those drafts noted more for depth than one overriding talent at the top. Okung probably isn't going to turn into Jake Long, Jon Ogden, or Tony Munoz. There's a certain amount of risk involved.

Yes, and point out to him that A Montgomery is still an unknown, so his spot on the roster is one Howard is free to take away as Monty doesn't play like he wants to keep it.

e. offensive players are drafted at 4 and 37 - If they don't go OL/OL, what will be different from last year?

Presently, the receivers are:

S Moss

D Thomas

M Mitchell

M Kelly

It's a passing league, you need bodies, and another big receiver would fit in nicely as the fifth guy.

Now, if you re-consider Fred Davis' position on the roster, and use him exclusively as a receiver, you have a big receiver who can be used in a variety of ways.

This allows you to line up Cooley as a tight end/H-back and Davis as a big receiver on the move: think of the mis-match issues you instantly create.

Now that idea is better than using the roster spot on another receiver.

"...has anyone seen the chick that Jesse James was cheating on Sandra Bullock with?"

Jesse James must be packin' 9 inches or more down below or something, as I can't think of any reason--other than 'love'--why a rich powerful woman like Bullock would take him back.

Not that Bullock is all that, but hey, she could get whomever she wanted if she put James out.

Is there a market for rich, moderately attractive Oscar winning actresses?

I'd say yes.

I'm not packin' 9 inches down below, but with a blue pill, and some dranks, I'm willing to out work a big man for four hours or more.

Am pleased to hear Fletch approves, but wouldn't really expect anything else from him. He's a gamer who seems to welcome spirited competition, probably because he realizes it's good for overall makeup and success of the team.

However, would be more interested to learn whether certain other members of the team feel the same way.

For example, how has Washington Redskins Quarterback for Life Jason Campbell taken the news that the team has signed another second string quarterback... for the express purpose of bringing some competition to that position... and possibly making him expendable... while also making plans to work out some college draft prospects too? How soon will it be before JC17 is demanding a trade?

And how has perennial fraud, loafer and waste of roster space Clinton Portis taken the news that the Redskins have signed yet another over the hill ego merchant that will probably push CP26 out of job?

On the other side of the line, every defensive signing is said to be intended to offer some help to Fat Albert, who allegedly is not too enamored with going to a 3-4 scheme. But if AH92 has said anything about whether he wants this supposed help, or has any interest whatsoever in the new scheme, I must have missed it.

Just curious.

What did we gain? WHAT DID WE GAIN? I'll tell you what we gained.

It was a cool crisp September night in Dallas Texas. The Cowboy fans were getting ready to enjoy another win against the hated Redskins. This would be a perfect nightcap to an evening that featured the induction of three of their fondest players into the ring of fame. Everything was going as planned. The Cowboys had scored 13 points and seemed to have stifled the Redskins offense to a new anemic level not seen since the forward pass was invented. Santana Moss had other plans as did Mark Brunnell. In the final 5 minutes of the game, after many a Redskins fan had turned the channel, the fireworks started. Mark Brunnell launched a 39 yard TD pass to Santana Moss. Moss ran under the ball as the perfectly thrown pass dropped into the end zone. Down by 6 points the Redskins launched another pass to Santana Moss. It was deep. Santana was hit in stride and ran it into the endzone to put the Redskins ahead by 1 point. The defense then stuffed the cowboys final 2 drives and Joe Gibbs ended our 4 game slide to the hated Cowboys. Then Monkeys on roller skates came busting through the walls and started setting off fireworks. That's how I remember it going down.

Seems kind of obvious.

#1 first round QBs have a 50% bust rate.

#2 drafting a first round QB every couple of year suggests that you are not using first round picks on other positions in the offense thereby creating a lack of talent on that side of the ball.

#3 it also implies that you aren't a good judge of QB talent. If you need to draft a first round QB every few years you obviously bothed the last pick so why do it again? Just sign a proven vet FA and use those picks on other positions of need.

Moe,
On the Davis Cooley thing, use both as all three. Cooley can split out wide too, did it with Gibbs and Zorn a bit. Davis I am less sure of at the H Back roll but its worth a shot.

I am telling ya, imagine going into the hurry up,

play 1. a two TE set with them both on the line, shifting to go twin TE strong on either side

play 2. They get into a I formation with Cooley lined up at HBack.

Play 3. split to a 3 wide formation with Davis on the outside, Cooley at TE again

Play 4. A 4 Wide set where both are WR's

Because both are so versatile you literary can go out with Davis, Cooley, two WR, and a RB and line up in 8 different packages, and thats not even putting into the equation things like going into shotgun vs single back vs I form or overloading one side of the field with receivers vs spreading everyone out.

Jason Campbell would request a trade through his agent if the Redskins select Mark Sanchez.
Jason Campbell would request a trade through his agent if the Redskins select Mark Sanchez.

If the Washington Redskins select Southern California quarterback Mark Sanchez in tomorrow's NFL draft, starting quarterback Jason Campbell will request to be traded, NFL sources said last night.

Campbell, whom the team has tried to replace this offseason, has publicly taken the high road throughout Washington's pursuit of other players to potentially take his job, saying he is focused on leading the Redskins in the upcoming season. The presence of another young, starting-caliber quarterback such as Sanchez on Washington's roster, however, would spur Campbell's representative, Joel Segal, to contact the team in an effort to find a better situation for the four-year veteran, league sources said.

Given the failure rate of young quarterbacks out of college, a club may be willing to give up a mid-round pick for a quarterback, such as a Kellen Clemens or Tarvaris Jackson, who not only has had the opportunity to learn for three years at the NFL level, but even start a few games over the course of his career. Now are you likely to find your next franchise quarterback in this group? Probably not, but you probably would not have found your next franchise quarterback with the third-round pick you gave up in order to acquire one of these players either."

"An interesting name... who can be had for a fifth-round pick is Steelers cornerback William Gay. Last week, due to his significant playing time and low base salary, Gay received the fourth highest performance-based paycheck in the league at $325,607. Perhaps, Gay can add to his offseason earnings via an offer sheet from another team."

Seriously, did you not read what I had posted above the last sentence. They pick a QB every few years in the first round, that means you are trying to fill the other 10 spots on offence with free agents and late round picks. It does not work out when you do that. You need to get talent around the QB to have success.

could Shanahan's surprise pick be Jevan Snead?

>>>>>>>>>>>>
from Jeb Williamson at the bleacher report...

Guess one thing we learned over the weekend (NFL Combine)?

Snead can throw the ball.

Snead’s decision to prepare for the combine at Houston’s PLEX training facility working with Jerry Rhome paid off in his throwing session.

Rhome is a character in sports the average fan knows exists—a sage the best turn to when they need advice—but rarely sees. He is credited with mentoring—among many others—a young Troy Aikman in Dallas. More recently, he worked with Alabama's Greg McElroy.

Whatever Rhome has been teaching, Snead proved a good student.

Snead looked confident, in control of his mechanics, and most disheartening to Ole Miss fans, the most accurate of any quarterback in his group.

The more throws he made the more you found yourself asking, “Where was this last year?”

Granted there was no defensive coverage in the route tree drills, but even an untrained eye could notice the adjustments receivers were making to throws from other quarterbacks in Snead's group, and the decided lack of them made for Snead's own throws.

Of the names in that group, Tony Pike struggled—a bit too much—on deep and out throws, and failed to quell questions about his arm strength. Zac Robinson rebounded from a listless week at the Senior Bowl and showed well, but did not have the type of throwing performance that ultimately changes his draft position.

Not that Snead did either. We all know he can throw with the best of them. What his performance did prove more than anything else is that he is coachable. Rhome’s influence was obvious, even in the short time the two prepared for Indy.

With half the league looking for a new starting quarterback in the next three years, Snead’s response to tutelage might be the deciding factor for a GM looking to fill that need with a developmental QB in this year’s draft.

A couple of ideas that we need to be open to after watching Snead’s performance at the NFL Combine:

With the lackluster performance—or absence—of other quarterbacks in front him, Snead could move up quite a bit from the fifth round projections he entered the combine with. Maybe even into the top five at the position.

We also learned that Snead responds well to good quarterback instruction, and—Ole Miss Fans must now admit—he might not have been getting exactly that these last two years.

Coles for Moss? My Crazy Eight Ball says "not likely" ... Moss is one of the six (seven?) guys with guaranteed money next year ... and that money was guaranteed at a time and under a Front Office when contracts with guaranteed money were written up on toilet paper (because they were written with the intention of promptly restructuring ... the agent's requirement as the cost of restructuring was guaranteed money).

If they get another receiver, they should figure on someone used primarily as a return man. My vote, before as now, is Trindon Holliday (and have him 'learn up' the sure handed smurfy receiver role that Moss plays).

So true, so true.

Dude, Tiger could get lessons on cheating from a high school junior, and still not know how to get sum on the side.

One rule is that one loyal jump off is what you want.

Why he had so many shows his cluelessness about cheating wimmin.

The loyal chick knows she doesn't own you and keeps distance--and silence.

She only wants to see you when you're there, and you must realize she's gonna do want she wants to do when you're not around.

You can not claim ownership of her and she doesn't do that with you.

The only time that matters is when you are together.

You'd think Tiger would've learned this.

"Seems kind of obvious.
Just sign a proven vet FA and use those picks on other positions of need." Posted by: PAskinsfan17

Comments:
1. There are first rounders, and then there are first rounders. Ramsey went 32nd, or one step above the second round. Campbell went 25th, which isn't much higher. He's actually performed pretty well for a late first, but people still complain about how much they gave up for him. A bad trade is not the same as a bad draft choice.
1
2. Signing a decent RFA as your backup and surrender the draft choice is something teams are more willing to do. There's an article on that now at profootballoutsiders.com. We'll see more of that in the future. Of course, if the QB doesn't work out, the fans will cite endlessly all the players the team could have drafted instead.

3. 'Bust rate' is a deceptive term. Is r Ramsey a bust, or Campbell? Is David Carr, who went first in Ramsey's year, a bust'? Only in relation to his draft position, and he had nothing to do with that.

4. Drafting a QB in the top five, now that's what I call risky.

5. To prove that the Skins seriously deprived themselves at other positions when they selected those two QBs, we'd have to prove that they'd have selected a star in lieu of the QB. If they hadn't selected Ramsey, for instance, they might have picked Jabar Gaffney (career high 55 receptions), DeShaun Foster (couple good seasons in Carolina, no years with 1000 yards rushing), or designated pass rusher Kalimba Edwards. There's no guarantee they would have selected Andre Gurode, who went early in the second and is the best of the next ten.

See, we really should have traded up one more spot to get Aaron Rodgers. If only we'd known what we know now....

"I can't remember a time where a team went out and bought a Super Bowl."

Maybe not, but the Saints sure do come close.

Starters brought in via FA/trade:

Drew Brees
Darren Sharper
Jonathan Vilma
Jeremy Shockey
Jabari Greer
Scott Fujita
Bobby McCray
Scott Shanle
Kyle Eckel

That's 9 of 22 starters, including their offensive MVP, defensive MVP, and 3 pro-bowlers.

For comparison, last year's Redskins offered 10 starters from outside the Redskins cultivated draft picks (to start the season):

Portis
Moss
Rabach
RThomas
Haynesworth
Carter
Daniels
Griffin
Fletcher
Hall

The big difference is that the Saints had many more draft picks (or Undrafted FAs) become key contributors -- nearly the entire receiving corp (Colston, Henderson, Meacham), pierre thomas, offensive line (Stinchcomb, Brown, Evans, Nicks, Bushrod), and defensive line (Sedrick Ellis, Will Smith, Charles Grant).

Yeah, I think it's called "Rumspringa" (not sure of the spelling)...they turn 16 and go out into the world, drink their tails off, and decided if they wanna stay that there or go back. I wish some Christian denominations gave the same sort of license to their youth...

Sam Bradford / Tim Tebow

*** This is a smoke screen ***

Shanny is playing real cool, just like he did with Cutler.
Remember, he didn't even work him out or interview him

Sexy Rexy is here to possibly start, because he knows the
system, until Clausen is ready.

They may sign JC17, but they will unload him...

too much drama and a distraction, so he must go

----------------------------

** Predictions **

JC17 gets traded to the bills for their 3rd round pick

Davis gets traded for the Patriots 2 second round picks

they have 3 #44 #47 #53- their own
They also have no pass catching TE and they desperately
want one for Brady

We now have 5 picks in the top 3

We could trade the 2 second rounders and move back
into the middle of the first round to get our left tackle

or use those 4 picks to draft 3 O-line & 1 running back

2005 - Coles for Moss - Outcome: push

Matt, nah, not even close. Moss has outperformed Coles, and is still on the team, unlike Coles, who left for Cincy, and is now a FA. This one was a win for the Redskins.

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | March 19, 2010 8:04 AM | Report abuse
---------------------------------

We dropped $5 mil just to get rid of Coles, and then had to show Moss the money. And truth be told, he has only had one great year to speak of, with injuries limiting his next two seasons. And then (again, through no fault of the players) we switch to an offense which devalues his speed. So what did we really gain?

Posted by: mattsoundworld | March 19, 2010 8:37 AM | Report abuse
=======================================
I'd have to agree with Beantown on this one. I think the skins made out like a bandit. Moss has been pretty durable, albeit the one year with the hammy issues. He's gets separation and runs nice routes, its just that our QB is on his back most of the time. Plus he plays above his position, on a top notch team he'd probably be the #2 only playing the X position on certain situations and match ups. Kind of like the way NE uses Wes Welker.

Either way you cut it, he's our deepest threat and teams respect him. Teams didn't necessarily fear Coles, you punch him in the mouth and he'd quit. He's had some injuries and some attitude problems dealing with coaches and some players. I remember how he pouted when the Jets got Farve.

"The Redskins often signed high-profile free agents in Daniel Snyder's first 11 seasons as owner. But Washington only had three playoff appearances during that span."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

JFC, can we just use these two sentences as the new name of RI and be done with it? I have read this statement more times than Oprah has gained 100 lbs. I agree with the statement, but ENOUGH ALREADY.
