LT would have been better or Thomas Jones.

There is ZERO that I like about this. Why bring in an underperforming, over the hill, headcase?

This is Shaun Alexander with TO's brain.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | March 12, 2010 6:49 PM |

For the money who gives a sh_t, you act like they signed him for 50mil. If he starts acting up or not producing he will be gone.

He will be used to give Portis rest and as a short yardage back, you act like he is there long term solution at RB.

Some of you cry babies are ridiculous, how about we let all this play out before we cry.

This guy ran all over us last year

still has something in the tank

now we don't have to draft a RB

draft OL

With the signing of a blocking TE it looks like we will be a running team again

draft Okung

I don't think LT would sign with us. He wants a ring and we're not competing for one for a couple years. He's too small anyway, we need a bigger back.

Everyone was so excited in the hires of Allen and Shanahan and now you're crticizing his moves. Have some trust guys! I'm sure our GM and coach know these players better than we do!I'd rather have a bunch of average talent with great coaching than great talent with average coaching. HTTR !!!! Go Shanny!

Maybe now we can move the chains on a 3rd and 2 or punch it in from the one yard line. Good signing.

Posted by: sorry2say | March 12, 2010 6:23 PM

Totally agree. This is one of the reasons they signed him. Last yesr we couldn't get the ball in from the one yard line. Lost 2 yards on a 3rd and one. For the money this is a great signing.

Posted by: TheJury | March 12, 2010 7:07 PM | Report abuse

Great signing. Creates competition in the backfield, meaning we'll see the best out of CP this year. Plus, I think this guy still has legs left. The best back that was out there regardless of money in my opinion.

LT is done and TJ has just too many carries. LJ has had basically 4 years off and has the best chance to reach his prime of the three.

This is all periculum's fault, his lasting legacy of pimping for Priest Holmes.

Posted by: daggar | March 12, 2010 7:08 PM | Report abuse

I think that LJ still has fuel in the tank at 30 and still remains physically strong, especially when Coach gets a hold of him, not to mention, his father Larry Sr. that I have great respect for will help keep him grounded and focused. He just may be the right guy in the right place at the right time and in the right sharing situation. Time will tell. Let's hope it works!

I did a comparison of MIke Shanhan's offense the last 4 years he was HC to the Redskins. In terms of explosive pass play (plays 20 yards or more) the Broncos and Skins were very similar. However, it was the explosive run plays were the Broncos were clearly dominate particularly in 2007 and 2008. I suggested at the time that fixing the Skins running game will be Shanny's primary focus early draft. We shall see.

Posted by: TWISI | March 12, 2010 7:12 PM | Report abuse

I like having a powerful runner on the roster. Remember our goal line problems last year with Portis and Betts.

Posted by: gatorz | March 12, 2010

Huh??????

178 carries, 0 TDs, 2 fumbles, 3.2yds/carry

Posted by: zcezcest1 | March 12, 2010 7:12 PM | Report abuse

Good move. Doesn't cost us much if he pans out - if he doesn't, he's gone and the cap hit is negligible. If he succeeds in his role (which is NOT a primary back), then he earns money and we win.

What I like so far is that we are not spending big money on names. The whole thing here is that moves in free agency aren't long term moves and will suit us well for the term that is intended - short term.

Now, is Larry a model citizen? No! But he isn't playing for Mr Medium! He is playing for Shanny who won't put up with his crap. Plus, this could give Sheriff Don't Wanna Practice something to think about. And I really don't carry if Larry likes gays or expresses explicit love for them. All I care about is that he plays, shows up fit, and gives 100% on every down. Whom he loves is his own business.

Posted by: laserwizard | March 12, 2010 7:14 PM | Report abuse

Agree with the signing. Johnson, when not a women-abuser, brings grit and some power to the backfield, and will hoepfully motivate Portis to commit to being better. But Shana-Allen should know that 2 potential headcase RB's sharing carries could blow up in their face, and we could see last season all over again. either way, should be entertaining.

If you voted "NO". He's cheap depth and an insurance policy if they want to cut CP.

Please refer to our depth chart-
1. Clinton Portis: 2100+ carries
2. Anthony Aldridge: 0 carries, 4.36 40
3. PJ Hill: 0 carries

He won't be the 2010 winner of the ED Block courage award but he makes the team better.

why are people coveting bradford, he's not that good. if shanny was smart he would draft okung, solidy some holes on defense, and then if campbell can never step it up, draft or trade for a qb later, there is no sense wasting a first rounder on a qb anymore, especially when we don't even know if there will be a 2011 season yet. skins fans, get your head out of ur A!ss' and actually see the big picture please, thanks.

A non-practicing Clinton Portis, who is slightly injured, doesn't care, and doesn't respect the head coach is still a better runner than Rock Cartwright, Betts, Ganther, Mason, etc. But with Larry Johnson as the other running back, CP can't afford to take a day off.

This signing gives us depth at RB and legitimate competition and motivation for Portis.

Brilliant Flounder -- especially since the people making the comments above mine were excited about Johnson being able to get us into the end zone from the 1.

As for the question, did they use him in goal line situations -- let me put it this way. If they did, he didn;t score. I can that because he had ZERO TDs. And if he wasn't used at the goal line, then why would he be taken out.

The most damaging part on Johnson is what he did with KC and what Jamaal Charles did when he got the job. Same OL, a MASSIVE difference in performance.

On October 27, 2009, the Chiefs "instructed Larry to refrain from practicing with the Chiefs or participating in other team activities" for his Twitter comments on Chiefs head coach Todd Haley and reportedly using gay slurs when he addressed the media.[14] Because of his comments, Johnson encountered backlash from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.[15] Johnson's twitter comments were: "My father got more creditentials than most of these pro coaches." That was followed by: "My father played for the coach from "rememeber the titans". Our coach played golf. My father played for redskins briefley. Our coach. Nuthn."[16] Johnson's tweets were responded by fans, one tweet including a reference to the nightclub incident. Johnson's response used the word "fag". The final post read: "Make me regret it. Lmao. U don't stop my checks. Lmao. So 'tweet' away."[16]

Posted by: zcezcest1 | March 12, 2010 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Johnson has been arrested four times since 2003 on various assault charges against women. In 2003, he was arrested for felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor domestic battery for waving a gun at his then-girlfriend, during an argument at his home. The charges were dropped when Johnson agreed to participate in a domestic violence diversion program. In 2005, he was again arrested for assault when a woman accused Johnson of pushing her to the ground, but the case was dropped after the alleged victim failed to appear in court for three different hearings.

His third arrest for assault came on February 24, 2008, after allegedly pushing a woman's head at a nightclub that night.[25] On October 10, 2008, Johnson was arrested for the fourth time and charged with one count of non-aggravated assault for allegedly spitting a drink in a woman's face at a Kansas City nightclub on October 11.[26] The woman involved, Ashley Stewart, has since filed a civil suit against Johnson, accusing him of negligence, assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of emotional distress.[27]

It was announced on October 16, 2008 that Johnson would be deactivated for the October 19 game against the Tennessee Titans in response to violating an undisclosed team rule.[28] The team said his suspension for this game was unrelated to the newest criminal investigation.

In March 2009, Johnson pleaded guilty to two counts of disturbing the peace, regarding the two incidents in 2008, and was sentenced to two years probation.[29]

I just looked up Charles and by not going into the stats your point looks good but if you look at the stats your argument is flawed.

He rushed for over a 100 yards 5 times against the worst rush defensive teams in the league.

He had a 259 yard padded stats game against Denver whos run defense sucked last year.

He also only had 1 TD and 3 lost fumbles so stop making him out to be the next coming.

Redskins sign Johnson
By: John Keim
Examiner Staff Writer
03/12/10 6:51 PM EST

He (Johnson) averaged 2.9 yards per carry in seven games for Kansas City before being cut and signed by Cincinnati, for whom he averaged 4.4 yards on 46 carries.

A Bengals insider said Johnson clearly was helped running behind the Bengals' line in the final seven games and appeared to have something left, perhaps as a strong No. 2. In the only game in which he received a lot of carries for the Bengals, Johnson rushed 22 times for 107 yards vs. Cleveland. Also, facing the Redskins with the Chiefs, Johnson gained 83 yards on 23 runs.

I'm not real excited about LJ. 30 yr old is getting up therer for a rb. Does he bring something extra that Ganther couldn't bring? I don't see it if he does. I would have prefered to have younger legs. Big strong guy, some baggage, but I don't see that he adds anything.

Hey Nate,
You recall I have most often mentioned I like your posts, and have certainly felt you have a Redskin - educated - opinion.

However, JJG taking character to an unnecessary extreme?
What should be the AIM Of Southwest Airlines for their pilots? Impeccable character? 100% effort, concentration?

Are they extreme in this?

JJG did emphasize character and many guys took his lead: Mann, Monk, Green, etc.
But there were others who did not:
Wilburn, Manley, Elowonibi, etc.

No hard feelings Nate; still consider you a Skins fan, friend.

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | March 12, 2010 8:15 PM | Report abuse

Z,

You've got to remember ... they are STUCK WITH PORTOISE. They don't have enough draft picks to fix every problem in 1 year. Next year they will likely as not draft that running back you would prefer.

Its just the way it is thanks to Vinny. Let's just hope he and Kiper's receivers eventually pan out. Looks like the tight end did. Mitchell may be a good one and if you throw Cooley in their with a decent line?

This is not a single year process ... it will take some time. You'll just have to learn to be patient. That "Redskins defense", probabl a "new" version of a 4-3/3-4 hybrid will take some time to learn and stabilize. And yes JC has another offense to learn. In the past we've seen how painful its been when they brought in new offenses. NOW it will be a new defense.

Its not going to be pretty but I think Shanahan is at least as good as Marty ... hopefully ... so perhaps there is a shot at 8-8.

Now you have two over-the-hill running backs that have similar styles (CP/LJ). Willie Parker (WP) would of been a much better fit, he would of given that element called speed--in which the Redskins have Zero. He could take a swing pass out of the backfield and take it 20-30 yards or may be to the house. And Oh by the way, is there anybody else in the room with 2 rings other than Shanahan?

Posted by: laboyde | March 13, 2010 1:55 AM | Report abuse

He's better than Ladell Betts and Rock Cartright. I don't care if he's a homophobe, everyones got an opinion about that issue in one way or another. He is also motivated, and that may push Portis to work harder.

The Death Eaters on this site are sucking all the energy away. LJ is a good signing. He's the only guy who has the Skins as his no. 1 choice, he's healthy and he experienced. LT doesn't want to play here, are you kidding? The problem with 30 year old backs is that they are too beat up, have no monetary motivation (last contract instead of playing for the next contract), no motivation to prove themselves to anyone. This may be the case with LJ as well, but it the best option we have at this point.

WITH A BLOCKING T/END WE COULD HAVE A GOOD SHOT AT THE PLAYOFF THIS YEAR. WITH A GOOD LINE jason c. won't be tendered a contract. he will be offered a good contract.

The DC Niteclubs will love this jerk...right up until the bouncers have to toss him out for smacking a chick or pouring a drink on one...Notice how this 'tough guy' never seems to get in scraps with a dude...He's a lame, his signing was lame, he's being paired with another lame and hopefully these two divas will cancel each other out and Ganther can get his shine. Same for Marko; GIVE PLAYERS WHO WANT TO PLAY THE OPPORTUNITY and let these overpaid headcases go the way of the Zepplin...

Could have done better. Could have done worse. Just build a dominant OLine and all of DC will be happy. Any 2nd tier RB can have 1,000+ yds per year with a great OLine. We need to begin with Okung and another OLine at #37. OLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL not lol lol lol lol lol.

This may sound silly but I think the best evaluators of running backs just may be linebackers. Why not ask London Fletcher what he thinks of Larry Johnson as a back.

As a person, he ain't a saint. I expect he will insult someone in the DC area and produce a little outrage, feigned or not.

Not a horrible signing I just would have preferred someone younger and faster, to take the reins from Portis. Johnson makes sense as a short yardage guy to let Portis rest, but if he gets hurt, as he tends to do, I don't know that I'd want LJ carrying the load.
